The Cafe Osborne House in Isle of Wight

We went in the cafe for a sandwich which we brought and it was so expensive and was very dry , saw a nice looking brownie so bought it and it tasted disgusting doesn’t even taste like a brownie wouldn’t recommend, I would save your money and bring a packed lunch

Had scones and a drink. Self service. The hot chocolate was nice, the scones were OK, but overall it was very expensive for what we had. The gift shop next door carried on the same theme with very expensive items.

Bright and airy café attached to the admissions building. Reasonable selection on the menu. One of us thought the prices reasonable, the other thought them expensive but you do need to remember you’re supporting EH. We tried a soup with bread roll and a pasty. Soup was probably the better option but both were good. Good stop off for a snack.

We went to visit Osbourne house and went down to the beach cafe a really lovely day out and enjoyed the house and beautiful gardens. We decided to have some lunch at the cafe on the beach. We ordered four hot dogs and 4 hot drinks and was astonished to be told the price was £46 there was no price list not we could see and was amazed that the hot dogs were £8 each luckily there were very nice but still way over price so be careful what you order and check prices first.

An OK cafe for a coffee but its no alternative for a proper restaurant so its a shame that when The Terrace is closed, that they cannot provide some suitable hot meals

surly staff and revolting food if you can ever get any. there was no hot food left so take your own picnic

A wet day in September we visited Osbourne house , after touring the house and grounds we stopped off for a bite to eat , as expected, by me anyway, it was busy, unfortunately the staff/management did not ! Average food offering, only one scruffy member of staff preparing drinks and taking orders and using the tills, we queued for a good 10 minutes to finally get served to find no seating available, although people who brought there own food in were sat eating , for future reference bring a picnic and if the weather is bad eat it in the cafe !!!

A good place to stop off. You can sit outside and enjoy the scenario. The food was fine for a tourist attraction and the servers were really friendly. Well prized as well.

We didn't get the best impression of the cafe when we went up to the counter and the three young people who were working there were stood there talking to to each other with their arms folded and continued with their conversation whilst we waited to be served. We stood there and waited, and waited and finally one of them eventually served us. We bought two sandwiches as this was all that was on offer besides scones and cake and they were awful. The bread was stale and the bit of filling that was on the sandwich was in the middle with none at the edges. We just ate the middle bit of the sandwich because we were hungry and left the rest of the sandwiches which was about 75% of the sandwich!. We should have taken them back but to be honest the sandwiches that we bought looked the best that were on offer and the rest looked less appetising so we didn't want a replacement. I would have thought that this could be a lovely little cafe but it isn't. I really wouldn't recommend this cafe to anyone unless they do some work on it first. They need an older member of staff to work with the younger members of staff to prevent them from standing and talking to each other whilst people are waiting to be served and they need to review their sandwich makers because they really aren't doing a good job . You expect better from an establishment of the calibre of Osbourne House. I dont like leaving a bad review but there was nothing positive to say about our visit to the cafe, the service was bad, the food was bad and the value for money was bad.

Atrocious - couldn’t score lower though. Bread roll served with tomato soup was so solid you couldn’t cut it with a knife! Prepacked sandwiches - replaced twice as the bread was dry and stale. Dry fruit scone & dry cheese scone What a disappointment at the Islands prestigious tourist spot.

Gets busy, the food is good and reasonably priced for an English heritage establishment. Long queue at peak times so we chose slightly later. Hot and cold food as well as standard tea coffee and cakes selections

Lovely scone meal with drink. Very busy but not loads of tables considering how many people could be there

Provided a good break after walking around much of the estate. Located in the Orangerie. All seating with table service. Limited menu but more than adequate. Good service by friendly staff and good value for money Recommended.

We were disappointed by our visit to the Terrace cafe: the tiffin was bland and soft, rather than biscuitty; no sugar was provided for the tea (I should have gone back to the counter and asked for some really) and a fork should have been provided with the victoria sponge (the slice wasn't easy to eat without one). More disconcertingly though, despite the man at the counter being friendly and serving us well, his criticism of a previous customer (who had not seen the 'contactless payment only' sign and got a bit shirty) was excessive, we felt. He seemed to complain to several customers later on in the queue, about the previous customer's behaviour. He also jokingly criticised his place of work to customers ("It's not the Ritz") which again, we felt was inappropriate.

During a visit to the house, we decided to stop for coffee here. It was quiet and the service was good. We sat outside and just looked across the landscape which was beautiful. Certainly enjoyable.

I hate to write a bad review as Osbourne is one of our favourite walks and has been a godsend during these hard times. It's a wonderful area to lose yourself in nature and realise why Victoria adored it so much in all its moods.We've been to this café before and, whilst not the greatest or cheapest, it's been decent and we've enjoyed it.Maybe this was a bad day but things need improvement. The first issue arose when we got there. My mother and myself went to wait at the base of the ramp since there was someone already being served. We were 'greeted' by a terse lady shouting. 'Get back from the ramp!'There were no visible signs to say you could stand near it, we were in masks at a distance and could easily move aside when the person left.Equally irksome was that the first customers kids were walking up and down and the one, as toddlers do, was reaching into the sugars. I question why they did not ask her to rein them in somewhat.Truthfully I would have turned and left but we didn't. Getting to the counter the woman was rather surly. Grunting in response to my mother's good morning and bunging the drinks with little care. A green tea and an ordinary tea. I decided against anything as quite frankly her attitude put me off wanting to support them.It was certainly not cheap either. Now, I'm not a cheapskate, I will happily pay for good quality but this was not. My brother said his tea was weak and the milk unpleasant and my mother's green tea tasted like burned, coloured water.I understand profit margin but our independent local sells gorgeous island roast coffee, tea pigs and pukka tea for a little less and they thrive. This seemed to be bog standard fare at premium prices, holding people to ransom almost.Next time we will be bringing a flask.

Despite Covid, a good cup of coffee is served - allbeit in a paper cup. Well done all. Outside tables are in a lovely setting.

The cafe allows one couple in at a time to purchase food from a limited menu to eat at tables outside. Service was very slow, prices fairly high, but the food and drink was good.

Good choice of light snacks, sandwiches and cakes and nice outdoor seating area as well as tables inside. Took quite a while to be served - could do with more staff. Everything we all ordered was delicious though.

We had lunch at this cafe at visitor reception. Usual fare but all very well made and good quality. There are a few outdoor tables but we chose to sit inside.

Friendly staff cakes were good and the cooked food looked very appetizing although we didn't want lunch, the pot of tea was good it we a tad overpriced but always is in these venues.

Quite expensive on the whole especially if you wanted more than just a cake. Even the entrance fee at £18.50 each is expensive if you only wanted just to spend no more than an hour or so at the place.

The choice of sandwiches was a bit limited to ham, cheese or bacon. The sandwich was quite tasty and the coffee reasonable. They have tables inside or outside but it does get very busy.

I don't know where to begin.Me & my wife visited with my family..with an amazing tour of osbourne house and swiss cottage & the beach etc.. We saw they had a cafe which sold Cream tea..now me and my family love cream tea! We saw that there was a que, which raised our expectations even more, seeing everyone queuing to try and get a table. It got up to us and we requested a table of 6... ( I could see one right down the end of the restaurant). To then be told by the manager that we would have to sit on different tables...I mean it was a family day out! I haven't seen my family in ages and we got talked to like garbage.Either way we took the tables.. thrown a menu to look at.A young girl came to take our order..we were told what they ran out of..Yet after 3pm they were some how serving it again...I dont know whether they just couldn't be bothered to make it anymore.Anyway like I said we love cream tea, so of course we ordered the cream tea...WHEN ORDERING A CREAM TEA..MAKE SURE YOUR CUSTOMER GETS THE TEA!!All scones and Jams and clotted cream arrived quickly...we had then finished them before our Teas even arrived. The lad that brought our tea out was apologetic and we even saw him talk to the manager about how weve already eaten our scones before the tea came out..the manager couldn't care about our experience..the same as she didnt care about the table next to us..basically telling them that there drink will be out when they are ready and too sit and wait. When there food had already arrived...The young lad that brought my grandad platter out even snapped at him!!! Rude!!!!!!!! I tried finding the email for the cafe..or to even email Osbourne house themselves but I could not find one. So I took to tripadvisor.The place is a shambles. Letting the osbourne house experience down.Get rid of the manager and you'll be fine. Or at least teach her some customer service episcally when were paying nearly £10pp.

Extremely expensive it seemed to be run by a couple of young lads with no experience. I would advise you eat outside of the Osborne house complex, where you can get a snack or meal for half the price.

Good choice of food, something to suit most tastes and pockets. Can sit in and outside, probably needs more seating in the high the season

Enjoyed the visit to Osbourne House but one look at the queue to be served and the lack of seating sent us away. Prices seemed to be on the very high side of the scale.

Needs re-training of staff on cleanliness and how to talk to people the cake was beautiful had lemon drizzle and carrot cake

A very poor selection for lunch. The only sandwiches available were egg and cress and the only rolls ham or cheese. We had squash and potato soup which was thin and watery and served with hard dry rolls.

Stale scone and butter, bland coffee £6.00. Staff very apologetic when I raised an eyebrow at the price. I left it but didn't send it back because I felt sorry for the serving staff having to sell such appalling fare.

Absolutely appalling. Completely inadequate, not enough seating, long queues. No coffee, bread rolls, knives or trays and surly, unhelpful staff. And this was on a wet Monday afternoon in September - pity the poor people who visited on a summer weekend.

Good selection of items to choose from on the menu and reasonably priced. The staff was friendly and very efficient, it was pretty busy so for a packed restaurant the service was great.

Situated on the ground floor its a lovely place for tea - though there was a long wait to be served it! The interior is exquisite.

Food is good if a little expensive,good choice of sandwiches.If your on a budget take your own packed lunch.

We come here usually just for the soup as there is nothing else really on the menu, but the soup is good |(not cheap) and comes with a bread roll. Disappointing this time as it took 30 minutes just to get the food before sitting down - for no reason at all- other than they were very slow at serving, approx only 3 people in the queue in front of me. They need to get some quicker staff who spend less time chatting about who does what

Visited whilst at the house. We had a cheese roll, egg sandwich, can of drink and a tea and two slices of carrot cake which came to just over £20 expensive for what it was.

This cafe is not run by English Heritage but is part of the Osborne House site.

We visited the cafe in late June 2019. We arrived at about 1:30pm and decided to have some light lunch before going on to visit Osborne House. The queue was nearly out the door. At first we thought the food must be terrific. As we waited in the queue we realised that the system for ordering seemed rather haphazard, hence the wait. Once we reached the front of the queue, we discovered that there was no food apart from scones and granola bars. None of the hot alternatives advertised on the menu, so no soup of the day, no sausage or vegan rolls, no pasties. There were also no sandwiches, indeed, no bread. No cheese or chutney for the cheese and chutney rolls. There were no plates, no trays, no cutlery. The whole place was a shambles. We should have kicked up a stink, but we’re British so we didn’t. We ate a packet of crisps, a scone and a granola bar for lunch, with a pot of tea for two. £15 quid. It was as if the cafe staff and management were completely unprepared for large numbers of patrons, but this is one of the most visited attractions on the Isle of Wight, so should they have stocked up and prepared better, even on a Monday. Avoid.

Nearly surly staff who told us (ordered us) to take a seat -- they would come to us when we went inside to order.

Cafe was very busy but it was a special event day.Must have lined up for at least 35/45 mins. and we had to sit outside even though the weather was not good. The food was reasonable, the tea was good and the price was acceptable.

A warm and friendly environment. Staff are helpful and lovely bright surroundings. Good choice of food

Very pleasant, light airy. Good menu. Reasonably priced. Can get very busy at times. The shop is next to the cafe, so there are plenty of sovenirs to be had

The restaurant was busy and the staff were having trouble replenishing items but the young man clearing and cleaning the tables was doing a sterling job. We had a ham and tomato roll each and shared a Cornish pasty. We were very impressed the rolls were lovely. Good selection of cold canned drinks.

Popped into cafe for a coffee and cake which took 35 mins! Food lovely from what I could see but it was badly organised. Osborne has many visitors who do not want restaurant food just a quick snack but due to the layout and staffing issues took way too long, such a shame

OK for a cup of coffee or tea with a snack. Found the meals a bit pricey. Service was not too good, half my coffee was in the saucer. Complained and got another cup. Clean enough, but we sat outside and enjoyed the views.

It had previously rained, they closed the garden seats, and had such a little indoor seating it was effectively shut. The signposting there was poor, and the staff rudeness about using the outside was high.

This was a nice cafe. We found this to be a very airy and open space. The service was quite slow and the drinks quite expensive, but they were nice and it kept the children entertained before entering the house.

Only had coffee but was a light and airy space. Great for families and there appeared to be plenty of choice.

What a wonderful place to relax during your visit to Osborne House, friendly staff excellent coffee cannot fault it

Mixed review, the jacket potato with cheese was lovely, however the bacon roll was horrible, hard stale roll so this didn't get eaten. Main complaint would be the price, £30 plus for x2 jacket potatoes, x1 bacon roll, x3 cakes, x2 drinks and 1 packet of crisps. Take a packed lunch, I will next time.

Pleasant visit for lunch. Not a lot of choice but lovely homemade soup. Pleasant staff and surroundings.

We enjoyed a well earned cup of tea with hand baked Victoria sponge which was delicious!! Staff were friendly and efficient. A little pricey but to be expected with the beautiful surroundings. Still worth a visit!!

Yes ate here, really recommend it, good food, good service and reasonable prices, it's a clean and on a nice day like we had you can eat outside, it's historical too

You’ll need a stop for a cuppa or coffee to revive you when visiting Osborne. This cafe dies the trick and serves a decent selection of snacks and cakes. However, we thought it was a bit pricey.

A good selection of food from a snack to a meal and it’s very popular staff are very helpful and you don’t wait long for your food and there indoor and outdoor seating Regards Gerry

Stopped here while it was raining and enjoyed a nice scone and cappuccinos to mull over what we had seen and what we still wanted to see.

Had a nice pot of tea and slice of Victoria sponge, a bit pricey but it's what you would expect. Avoid lunch time though. The queue was very long and people were fighting for seats. The staff did very well to keeps the tables cleared .

Expensive, average food, £5.25 for a bowl of average soup, £4.00 for a sandwich £3.00 for a small piece of cake, queued for half an hour to be served

After a long walk down to the Swiss Chalet it was lovely to sit in the beautiful grounds in the sunshine and enjoy homemade Victoria sponge and tea. The cake was delicious and of course calorie free.

There were insufficient staff to cope with the many hungry visitors waited in the queue for 3/4 hour.. Food mediocre and overpriced.

We visited the cafe following our visit to Osborne house. We had a sandwich each & crisps plus a drink and the price was £12. Sandwich was ok ? Not worth £4 !

Restaurant was an hour wsit so we went to the cafe instead. Wish we hadn't, soup was luke warm and gloopy and we had to use a combination of metal, plastic and wooden cutlery. The baked potatoes were nice though

We must of picked a bad time to go in for tea, as staff were far from friendly and welcoming. Victoria sponge wasn’t the best, the shortbread was ok, the tea was nice, but all quiet expensive for what it was.

A very clean cafe with friendly and helpful staff food was well presented and tasted very good. The coffee was the best I had tasted on the Isle of Wight. The toilets across the road were very clean .

Very good cafe for an English Heritage site, lots of good sized tables and the food quality is very good.

The food was very good! Unusual as I had never had savoury muffin before! It was supposed to be blue cheese and cranberry but I couldn’t taste any blue cheese! Still quite nice but not something I would choose again!

Good afternoon tea and where else would it be so appropriate to order Victoria sponge cake. Lovely place, service a bit slow due to how busy it was. But all in all worth dropping in.

A good selection of food and drink plus prices reasonable. The tables are clean and service good. There is a choice of sitting inside or outside.

Suggest you take a picnic or get a meal deal from a supermarket as prices are very expensive! Food wasn't that special to warrant such high prices!

Not one of the best options I've encountered at heritage sites in Britain. Staff were friendly whilst busy, but the menu was very limited and pretty uninspired. We agreed we'd have been better to eat at one of the island's cafes or pubs to enjoy more of the local produce.

This is more of a restaurant than coffee shop. Food was very good and plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. Great place to have some food during your sightseeing and give your legs a break. Would recommend.

I only bought a coffe here as I thought the prices were well above average. I sometimmes get a shake when carrying liquides and to this end the staff were very helpfull and carried the drink for me

Visited for a drink and cake on a hot day. The cake was uncovered and had flies landing on it. The staff didn’t appear to wear any protective headgear for working in a cafe.

We were there fairly early in the morning and they had a good selection of cakes etc. but I think later in the day or lunch time seating and selection would become an issue.

We called here for tea and cake but it was about an hour before closing. Only a choice of muffins, all the other cake plates were empty with some tempting name labels. The pots of tea were very nice and the staff friendly. Seating was spacious and decoration was clean and smart.

We called in after our visit to the house and it was raining so seats were much in demand and we had to wait a while. We just had sandwiches which at £4.00 aren't cheap but they were OK. So for 3 drinks and 3 sandwiches we didn't get much change out of £20.00. Can't say much more than that really - basic and adequate.

When we called in for morning coffee we were told that the coffee machine was not working, after being cleaned earlier, and that they could provide filter coffee. Staff were busy feeding data into the computer, or being told loudly by the manager what to do. Eventually our order was taken and the coffee arrived. It was dreadful.

We popped in to have a bite to eat and found that the menu had very little choice available. ‘Sandwiches on Plates’ was how the staff member described it.

We visited the cafe shortly before llunch and while it was still fairly quiet. The service was friendly and good and there were delicious scones and Victoria Sponge to accompany the tea or coffee. The toilets were conveniently close.

If you need to eat then this is a great place with good facilities and adjacent to a nice shopping area.

We ate here after a long morning walking round the house and gardens. There was a decent choice of sandwiches and cakes and some hot food, as well as a variety of drinks on offer. The self service system worked well and was efficient. There were lots of tables to choose and we enjoyed our lunch

Good cup of coffee, small selection of good cakes, what more do you need before a good walk round, oh yes, a happy, smiley welcome. You will get all three

The staff here were so friendly and helpful and the food was much nicer than normal tourist attractions provide. Prices maybe higher than in a normal cafe, but certainly competitive in a cafe linked to a tourist attraction.

On a positive the Victoria Sponge Cake was very good but the cheese sandwich was dreadful ! At a cost of £4.50 for the sandwich it should have been Dar better! The sausage roll at £3.50;was pretty poor too! A big improvement is needed I am afraid!

Food was well presented and staff helpful. Prices are what you would expect from this sort of outlet. Quite busy, but people moved on quite smartly,so vacant tables were possible to find. Probably another story in the summer!

Nice food, not too much of a choice and a bit expensive but worth going in for a bite, in the summer there is an outdoor garden to sit and eat in.

W e visited for just tea and coffee ,and the 4 of us commented that it was the best cappuccino we had when on the island

Lovely tea room with home made cakes, and hot food. (at entrance) Took a break after visiting the House, for Lunch before walking down to the Chalet as this is quite a long way from any amenities.

Food was ok but expensive compared to other outside venues. Bottle of coke £2.75, nearby venues less than £2.00. Difficult to justify in spite of the venue. Perhaps this was the reason for there only being four others in the cafe. The gift shop was full of people at the time.

It was nice to have a sit down in the lovely cafe after looking round Osborne house. The lattes are nice as was a chocolate twist pastry which was moist and yummy. A great way to recharge your batteries and quite reasonably priced.

This restaurant serves a very nice menu at very reasonable prices. The restaurant is in the main house. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

There is so much to see and do you will need refreshments at some time during your visit. The cafe is modern and well run and has indoor and outdoor seating in a pleasant environment. Serves sandwiches, cakes, and hot and cold beverages.
