The miner Colin was very good at communicating his knowledge of the pits and mining. To be underground in a real pit was a moving experience. It was enhanced by 2 other miners were on the tour and saw some of the comradery between all 3 miners / colliers. It was inspiring to be told by Colin that research is being done at this pit into using heat from deep mines to power homes and other buildings. This is an encouraging way to use the legacy of the pits, Brilliant day.

What an eye opener, finding out about how some of my ancestors earned a living perhaps back to Victorian era. What a superb tour guide Ian Joel was. His knowledge of mining was immense. He was funny, informative beyond belief, and mostly a Yorkshire man who experienced working down the mines himself. Very nice to understand the reality of it. Lovely. It has been quite a while since last I was here. I remember the trip down the pit was a great experience. The cafe was equally as good with plenty of good quality food. Now I'm afraid it's a dump with very expensive very poorly presented food :- sausages over done rock hard and inedible, £8.50 for small sausage roll and chips, pies run out by only 1.15pm, small mainly crust quiche tasteless and over cooked and hard under heat lamps. In all, the food was very poor and very expensive for what you get The only decent thing was staff who were working very hard and were very helpful. I will not be returning as I feel ripped off and badly done to.

Had a very interesting and informative visit here. The underground tour in the mine will explain the life of the early miner and his family up until the present day, your guide being an ex-miner himself. It’s quite an eye opener! Obviously you’ll see the exhibits and original buildings from this disused mine and also an interesting gallery devoted to the 1984 miner’s strike and the hardships they went through and how it pulled some communities together and divided others. There’s many well informed guides to assist and answer any questions you may have. Excellent cafe here for snacks and meals. Free to enter but you pay a reasonable set donation to join the underground tour.

It was chilly and windy and my salad got blown off my plate, and napkins off the table. The food wasn't very hot, or very nice. Go to the many local cafes or farmshops, much better value . As a group of retired teachers we visited September 5th. Some of us had a miners breakfast, some bacon & egg bread cake, some sausage & egg bread cake, others pie chips & peas. The food was excellent, the staff very friendly and helpful. Our tour down the mine was booked for 1pm our fantastic guide Ian right from the start was so knowledgeable, funny and his running commentary captivated us for over an hour whilst on the tour. He was an absolute credit to Caphouse Colliery he answered all our questions. Ian was such a “ inspirational teacher” that most of us are coming back with family. Some of us managed to visit activities on sight and the Longest Year 84/85 exhibition was really thought provoking and this is the History that should be made compulsory in all High Schools, the conditions that some people had to endure for little pay. Once again thank you to Ian for making the “ retired teachers” visit such an educational visit.

Smashing day out. Went with the family and my fatha who is an ex-miner. Having grown up around stories from darn t'pit and all his old mates and knowing the museum was staffed by many fellow ex-miners, I was looking forward to being around those larger than life personalities even more than the museum exhibits themselves. Mindshuh, some o' towld lads that tek thi darn theer are like museum artifacts thersens! The banter began as soon as we drove to the gate. We stopped to speak to two guys in mining gear who were still speaking to each other ova top o t'car...thinking we we're good to go we drove on. We only found once me mutha and fatha arrived that we were supposed to pay on entry! Back at the gates the guys admitted they were too busy kalling; cue me mutha chastising the lads for being stood theer having a mother's bloody meetin instead o' doing job reyt! Before we even entered the building me fatha bumped into Big Bird, aka Glen, who works on the paddy train. They worked together in Selby so it was wonderful seeing them catch up and reminisce. Had a browse round inside, some really moving and poignant exhibits in the galleries concerning the Miner's Strike. Incredible collection of strike history, displayed and exhibited by people who are clearly very passionate about the history; simply stunning. And the Memorial Garden, what can I say, a beautiful monument to those courageous and dedicated guys who were all tragically taken from the families they worked so hard to look after. My dad worked with Cookie, so it was an honour to take a seat on his bench and enjoy the flower displays, which make this a living, breathing memorial. In queue to gu darn t'pit, me fatha bumped into yet another old friend who works there! We were patiently assisted with the safety helmets, not easy when you've brought kids who struggle with funny new headgear. Biker Joe was to be our guide, what a guy! I've read many other reviews commenting on the mine guides being sexist, condescending and rude to fowk...any fears of that were utterly ungrounded with our Joe, diamond in t'ruff it seems! I could listen to his pit tales from when he was 16 for....ooo a good hour! Seriously though, awesome guy, deserves special mention for his great work, he was especially reassuring when my young daughter became distressed by t'cage gooin darn reyt reyt fast. He simply said 'Y'ok Tiger?' as we disembarked the cage and she was immediately cured! Incidentally, she pretends to be tigers, jaguars, black panthers etc all the time at home, so he could not have been more on the money there! Also, Joe and my dad had both worked as miners for 33 years each which led to many of Joe's explanations of machinery and methods involving call-backs to me dad for any further info, with Joe hilariously calling him 'fatha' each time :D :D Went for lunch at the cafe which was good tasty snap, others have said it's a bit dear but fairly standard for museum grub I thought. Any road, it's amusing just to read any given menu prices to me mutha to hear her go 'EH?! Well, the robbin basturds!' Gift shop had some cool stuff but seemed a bit sparse? Our favourite was the rocks and minerals bit where they all look like sweets (spice, to give them their correct term). We had another browse round the machinery outdoors, a long play on the brilliant adventure playground and then a quick ride on the paddy with Glen before heading off oam! Thank you for this fantastic day out!!

There is a five pound per car fee for parking and we had to wait in a queue for about 10 minutes whilst those ahead were given their paperwork and wristbands for the coal train that connects the two ends of the site. The booking is recommended for the mine experience which was fantastic but may not be suitable for those that don’t like enclosed spaces or are not good on their feet, also worth wearing shoes with good grips as some of the underground paths, despite the efforts of the teams, can be a bit slippy. Facts: £5 to park which gets you unlimited rides on the train during the holidays. There is a Beach & Park, plenty of picnic areas and a beautiful memorial to all the fallen minors on the grounds of the museum which are a must see! The staff in the main museum and on the tour down the mine are very professional and knowledgeable. We had the pleasure of having Eric as our guide today and he was absolutely brilliant especially with the kids! When we came out we then visited the cafe which is were our day went down hill dramatically! I gave the young lady behind the counter my order and then my son decides to change his drink. As I went back to change the drink she asked the person with me to pay! First of all I hadn't finished ordering and it was me ordering so why did she ask the person with me to pay? Anyway I ordered 2 pananis of the menu and a portion of chips & 3 drinks when the food came out I was given 2 panins (no crisps, salad or coleslaw like that menu stated) and our drinks. When questioning the staff over missing items I was told the lady on the counter hadn't even put my chips through (clearly couldn't be bothered to cook them) & she had only put them through as 2 paninis even though the menu didn't state you could choose to have them with or without the "extras" and the £4 rocky road milkshake came just a plain chocolate milkshake with a bit of whipped cream! No rocky road about it. I had no signal inside so was unsure of the payment but when I went to check it still came to £20 for 2 pananis and 3 drinks which I find absolutely shocking!! So I would recommend you taking your own food and drink!! Other than this we had a brilliant day! The gift shop was also very good with plenty of things to choose from and a reasonable price!

A great day out. Particularly good for children but equally fascinating for adults as well. It's all very well organised from the car parking to the entrance and the tour itself. There's a small miniature train that, for a small fee, takes you from the car park to the entrance and back. You're issued with a hard hat and miners lamp and whisked down to the coal face in the original miners cage. The tour takes around 30 - 45 minutes and you walk around the actual tunnels, making sure not to bang your head as some are very low, luckily your hard hat takes the blunt. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and ours, David, was also very funny. There's a cafe and children's playground also there. I recommend booking tickets prior as group tours are limited so as to fit the whole group in the lift. Whilst it's pitch black in the tunnels with no lights, you use your miners lamp to see where you're walking, so people who are claustrophobic or afraid of the dark might not enjoy it.

A great day out, especially with children. It's a very well organised tour underground of the many tunnels and David, our guide, was made it even better with his humour and vast knowledge. There's a large cafe and a children's playground. There's a large car park a short walk away with a miniature train taking people from the car park to the entrance. There's also a large disabled car park close to the entrance. During school holidays they charge £5 to park, but the train ride is free. This is reversed outside the holidays. The tour itself takes around 45 minutes and they give you a hard helmet to wear and a miners torch to hold. The cage that takes you down the mine shaft lasts a couple of minutes. The history of coal mining is interesting, particularly the stories our guide David told us of life underground. I'd definitely book prior as numbers are limited for each tour.

Great place with loads to see and do. Had an underground trip that was brilliant, with a great, former miner guide. Need to go back.

Great! A really relevant, historically detailed and engaging North of England attraction. Humorous guide is the real deal (i.e a miner). All three of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Good value too

Amazing wheelchair access. I loved coming here so much as it really felt like they cared about making it as accessible as possible. The tour guide Russ Jones was very engaging. Wheelchair users and their group get their own tour down the pit 💕

Went yesterday and took our two 11 year old grandchildren. I just wanted to say what a lovely day out. The tour guide underground was excellent giving information in a entertaining way with stories etc. The gentlemen in the winder room again explained the workings and demonstrated _ excellent. The boys enjoyed the train ride the nature walk. It was lovely to see the boys interacting with the guides rather than at home on their devices. An excellent day out well worth going. Thank you for a lovely day out!

My day didn't go as planned. I had a small accident. I was clumsy and needed first aid. The staff were wonderful. They were kind and caring to me, my husband, and my son. I look forward to going back and seeing all the attractions.

Got an unexpected day off work and decided to visit as my wife and I both have close family who used to be miners, we can't wait to come back to see the rest of the museum, so much to see and do, it's an incredible journey through our mining heritage. We travelled down from Durham and we're so pleased we did.

I'm going to be honest here, never had such fun anywhere! Do visit them, they love what they do, you'll hear their lifetime stories and find absolutely amazing people working. Went there thinking it might be another museum experience, but you start getting that welcoming experience right at the beginning when a gentleman explains to you what you're expecting and guides you to park your car and find more on reception. You go to the reception and find more welcoming faces and if you have booked underground (that you should), you'll be taken back in time with a lovely tour guide (ours was amazing Wales man I think Cole was his name). There is plenty of stuff to see, you can have a picnic, there's a children's playing area and so much more. It would be a full day out.

I took a group of people from a Care Home today. Three of the residents are wheel chair users. The staff could not have been better from the moment that we arrived. Graham the buggy driver was like our personal chauffeur! Nothing was too much trouble. When we went to see the horses, the ladies there opened each of the stalls in order that the residents could see the horses clearly. This was on a busy school holiday day. I rarely write reviews but I feel that they really need a pat on the back!

Having visited here 20 years ago I joked with my wife how my previous girlfriend had been treated with male staff insisting on at that time placing battery belt around the waist and how mysoginistic the guides were. Well, that was 20 years ago or so I thought. The behaviour I witnessed today was disgraceful. Why do men here insist on putting on guests belts for them? Whilst getting extremely close to females and looking down their tops? Next, the guide was mysoginistic with his "silly woman" type quips. Nothing was a straight answer everything was sarcasm or a bad attempt at a joke. This may have been funny in the 1970s but not today. My wife a doctor felt extremely uncomfortable with the disrespectful remarks. The guide belittled people I guess in an attempt to be the big man. As a trained mines rescue person I was telling my son about various aspects of the pit. Some of which were (later) ridiculed or stated were incorrect ....I hadnt been talking to the guide nor did I know he could hear me! But having been trained in mines rescue I was telling my kids the modern way things were done not what may have been done 30 years ago! I didnt mention this or argue with the guide but he was wrong to bring this up. I was also chastised in a pee taking manner for having the audacity to look at something (sorry for taking an interest) . Also when my son brought things up at first he was listened to but soon the guide ridiculed him too; I guess in an attempt to shut him up. 20 years ago this behaviour was wrong , its certainly not to be tolerated now! Let me also say I'm not one to complain and I'm not easily offended and neither is my wife but the attitude needs to change. The group was not made up of 1970s miners ! In summary, the management need to stop this close contact and allow people to put on their own belts. The 1970s humour needs to go. The guides need to be more professional and respectful and not belittle people. We left having wished we had not visited .

Prebooked tour beforehand. OMG Steve our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable (yes helps he used to work the mines). My family and I really enjoyed going down the mines and learning it's history and how hard they worked (woman worked harder than the men when they were allowed down and worked the mines) Tour lasted 1 hour . Had a train ride but sooo much to see and not enough time as we didn't arrive until 2pm and it closed at 5pm. Loads for kids to do. We donated £7.50 x 5 adults to museum. What a great educational place and recommend a visit for young to old. Toilets scattered around and nice and clean. All staff jolly & very friendly.

Booked Sunday lunch, son and I, at 1.30pm. It was delicious. Atmosphere was lovely, busy but not too crowded with easy dinner music in the background. Had beef that came with individual vegetables and I asked for separate gravy. Glass of Pinot and a diet coke - very good. Puddings were cake and a chocolate bomb which were both nice. Coffees then, perfect. Service was just right and the whole vibe was just spot on. Thank you!
