Shame that this place has closed - it is now just another store selling Oxford tee shirts. Maybe they'll change their minds and reopen it.

Went to meet friends for a cup of coffee. It was a sunny day, so I made an order at the counter and sat outdoor. Barely got my order to the table, a waitress came over and literally yelled at us saying that they were closing. It was 5 to 6pm so I thought that we could at least have a few minutes to finish off, however they started closing, taking the tables and chairs inside. A lady stood over me waiting to clean up whilst I was rushing to finish off my coffee and piece of cake. Very unprofessional, moreover embarassing. I would have expected to be notified about the closing time at the counter. I will never go back to this place.

Called in here for a snack , the food is lovely and reasonable priced. We had the biggest breakfast baguette ever- filled with sausage, bacon and scrambled egg and also a cheese, tomato and basil panini....lovely. Good food at a reasonable price, great view too of the university. However what let's this place down is sadly the owner, the way he treated his staff in front of everyone was sadly quite appalling. Borderline xenophobic "my oriental friend", "you need to learn English", it was like watching basil fawlty with Manuel. We couldn't wait to leave it made us feel so uncomfortable. The staff actually do a good job when they're given the chance. Hope they find something better soon.

With pretty much a monopoly on outdoor seating on Broad Street this is going to be the choice of many on a sunny day in Oxford. Hard to believe that they can get it so wrong. A simple Americano took 15 minutes to be brought to my outdoor table and it was no more than tepid at best. Certainly not worth a couple of quid. The final straw was the toilet which was minging to say the least - now I can believe that they are plagued with non-customers using it but that's an overhead of location in a tourist city, they should factor it in - can;t believe a cleaner would cost anything like their business rates. Avoid until they up their game.

We visited The Buttery on the 17 th May and found the staff to be very accommodating. However the state of the customer toilet was disgusting. Not only the loo itself but the room has never been cleaned for years!!! The food was poor, my Mexican wrap had lettuce that had been heated contained in it, which was the only part remotely warm.

I was with a tour group and we had to wait for a couple of hours before we could tour the Bodleian Library so a friend and I struck off down the street to see what we could find for lunch. The Buttery looked quite cozy so we found a table by the window so we could watch a film crew outside filming an episode of "Endeavor". I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a bowl of Broccoli and Stilthouse soup that the waitress explained was a type of British cheese. Despite our rather small order, the food took quite some time to be served. Finally, it arrived and I found the soup quite flavorful. I noticed there was a cold chest of ice cream and, remembering how good the British ice cream was on my earlier trips to London, I ordered a small scoop to take with me as we strolled up the street. It was quite refreshing as well.

My wife and I took a city break in Oxford and visted the Butterry Cafe. I only had a Latte because they don't do gluten free (I am coeliac). My wife had a smoothie and a piece of carrot cake. My Latte wasn't a Latte; it was just a milky coffee, and a terrible one at that. The carrot cake was so dry it was almost like a biscuit. The smoothie was fine. I felt compelled to return both the coffee and the cake as they were so bad. We did not get our money back but to drink the coffee and eat the cake would have been worse than the wasre of money

We called in to this tea rooms today, and sadly it did not live up to expectations. Firstly they were very busy (which we took as a good sign as it's clearly popular) but that did mean the place seemed a bit disorganised. The drinks / food were quite pricey, and did not really prove to be worth the price. The hotdog was microwaved and the bread was 'tough', the tea came in a mug with a tea bag (we were at least hoping for a tea pot) and the cake was OK but at £3.20 per slice it should have been more than OK.

Went in here to try and find a table for 6 of us. No one asked to help or even pointed out if they could accommodate. Instead when we tried to walk upstairs, got shouted at that this was for staff only (maybe put a barrier up or maybe a sign). We promptly left, not a word spoken by the staff apart from the stairs incident. We found somewhere nice for lunch, came back to the market and bought ourselves some nice food. They had about 8 tables outside, away from the cafe. Not one person was sat at them as it was extremely cold. We found one table to sit at just did finish the food, must have been watching and ran straight out and told us this was for customers only, we just said 5 minutes whilst we finish the food. No we were told we must leave (just to point out, I work at a Coffee shop, if its dead and people sit at the seats to either just to take a seat or even eat, i just politely ask if they take there rubbish. Popped in here for a spot of lunch. Has tables out on the pavement which would be delightful if there weren't quite so many of them crammed into the available space. Food is reasonably priced, but the service could be improved slightly. There was only one person taking orders at the till while also dealing with phone calls and issuing instructions to staff. We stopped here for a coffee during the day. I sat down at a table while my boyfriend ordered. I asked for a take away cup as I knew I wouldn't finish my coffee before wanting to carry on walking through Oxford's beautiful streets. My boyfriend just returned with our drinks and sat down when the manager/owner came over and shouted at us "If you ordered take-away then you have to TAKE. IT. AWAY!!!". He was extremely rude and everyone turned to stare at us. How embarrassing. My boyfriend replied apologising and asked the owner if he'd like us to pay the difference - he rudely said "yes I would actually" so we coughed up the princely sum of 60 pence! I hope that was worth humiliating two customers in front of a crowded cafe for. We both felt like we'd walked in and asked for two glasses of tap water the way he treated us. We'd just paid for drinks and were certainly not trying to save 60p. We merely wanted the option of taking them with us after we'd had a little sit down. I've never been shouted at by someone in the hospitality industry before. After that I was very aware of the surroundings and could hear the same man speaking to the staff with the same aggressive and nasty tone. I'm certainly glad I don't work there!

After a 15-20 minute wait, where I had asked where my panini had got to given there were six people behind the counter chatting and not doing much, I was abruptly told there were quite a few orders taken recently. Finally my panini arrived and chap handed it to me saying chicken panini not toasted and I was surprised to feel it was warm. Given I wanted it for later it having been warmed was a problem. I asked if they would deliver right order at the hairdressers around the corner, as I was now late for my appointment, and they just said could I wait yet longer for it. I said no and asked for my money back. On leaving the cafe I bumped into the owner and mentioned the issue to him and all he could say was why would I order a panini unheated. Really?? What rubbish customer service and no wonder given attitude of the owner. Fortunately my hairdresser will be boycotting their cafe and the hotel in future... Oxford has such lovely coffee places, like mortons or Turl kitchen... that fortunately we don't have to put up with poor customer service.

Have visited this cafe on a number of occasions over the years and have always been delighted with the experience. Good coffee and nice choice of tasty cakes. Necessary to order inside but pleasant table service. Best point about cafe is location - outside seating in the middle of Broad Street. Brilliant place to sit, enjoy the sunshine and watch the world go by.

Stopped here for delicious cappuccino and latte. it was sunny and we had tables outside with views of the university . fantastic watching tourists and students pass by. Had we not eaten the food looked delicious but the coffee was great and the staff friendly and welcoming. So much nicer than chain coffee shops.

The Buttery is a small hotel as well as a restaurant that offers both indoor and outdoor seating. We enjoyed this so much that we returned for afternnon tea after we concluded our explorations of the local sights. This is a family owned place that offers tasty food. Ingredients were fresh. Four of us chose different dishes -- pastry meat pie, sandwich, soup. All was well-presented, fresh and tasty.

I came here for coffee with a friend recently, and whilst there was nothing bad about my experience at all, I felt nothing really left a lasting impression. The decor was a little bland, the food selection was okay but nothing fancy. It was all nice enough but a little basic- although sometimes I suppose a basic, no-fuss lunch is just what you want. The coffee did taste very nice, and the prices are quite reasonable. The staff were friendly enough, and whilst in the summer its outside tables are usually full, this time there seemed to be a lack of atmosphere. I'd maybe recommend going when it's a little busier, or if you want to sit outside and admire broad street at its bustling best.

My husband and I went to Oxford on our way to the Cotswolds whilst holidaying in London during December 2014, the morning tea and coffee was very nice and the place was very very clean. We left behind a bag, the staff found a business card and made a few calls to our Australian number and left a message for us. Had they not made the effort to contact us, we would not have noticed until we were back in London that evening, packing to catch a train to Paris the following morning. This would have caused us to miss our train, as the bag had our travel documents inside. EXCELLENT, AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE.

It's a very long time since I first came here to this family run eatery. It isn't the place to go if you want a full meal but it's great for a quick bite. The staff were friendly enough but somewhat disorganised even though most tables were empty. I have no idea how they will manage when they get busy with summer tourists. Our desert cake (very tasty) arrived with our coffees and the main food followed a few minutes after. My double espresso coffee was served without sugar or spoon so I had to ask for them. "Oh yes we've got some sugar sachets in a box down here". Worth a try but there are plenty of other places around to tempt you.

It was adequate ... run out of teaspoons and hand dryer broken in loo. Haphazard service by pleasant but clearly muddled staff. Wouldn't recommend as a quintessential English teashop - there are many nearby that are better.

Stopped here for tea and cake, and had a baguette to take away also. Friendly service, food tasty and freshly prepared. Plenty of seating outside and at the back of the shop.

Stopped today for breakfast but menu choice was limited to pre made baguettes and pastries . Would have thought that a place the Lewis frequents could do better . Just offering to heat up the baguette would have been a start

The Buttery is in Broad Street, opposite Balliol College. There's extensive outdoor seating as well as space inside. We chose to sit inside but with a clear view of Balliol.

Yep, another day trip to Oxford having been introduced to Knoops last December. A range from 34% to 80% this time. Three out of four excellent. The 80% was rather disappointing, probably down to the fact that it was vegan ( had not spotted that) such that different milk was used and possibly more water. Will concentrate on the 70% for our next visit. Blueberry slices and Pain au Chocolat both fabulous. And great service. Hayling Seagoon

Actually, we had a number of dinners & breakfast during the 5 days in Oxford. The quality of food and service was superb! The level of cuisine is quite high -- especially the Tagine -- not to miss.

Extremely inefficient staff. Very very slow service at an off-peak time. Seems the two staff on shift are either clearly trainee or just clueless. The girl keeps hiding when one or two people walk in. Customers walking out!!
