Firstly, as a pub it’s absolutely fine. Probably as good a Spoons as you will find. Specific gripe - brought the kids last week to eat and ordered through the app - chips “sold out” ! What sort of Spoons runs out of chips? They could have just gone to one of the 4 nearby supermarkets for more? We left because the kids had decided they wanted pizza and chips. Went back today - Saturday lunch time. Again ordering through the app at least half of the menu listed as “sold out” ! Managed to choose 4 meals from what was left. Then ordering drinks for the kids - no coke (actually Pepsi / Pepsi max) or lemonade!! I mean what sort of pub runs out of coke and lemonde on a Saturday lunch time ?? Won’t bother again.

I know that you get what you pay for but does that mean it should be cold? Had breakfast a couple of times recently and it’s changed. Burnt toast that was cold, how does that even happen? Bacon and beans cold. Staff aren’t interested. Coffee machines hit and miss. I know it’s cheap but come on weatherspoons, pull your finger out!

First review for a couple of years, no change whatsoever, terrible management, someone was vaping at one of the tables, he kept hiding it but it was so obvious because of the smell but the member of staff who spent all her time cleaning tables and serving meals just seemed oblivious to it or probably turned a blind eye. Long wait for food and drinks on the app (cocktails in jugs seem to take priority over everything else). This place looks really tired and run down and is in need of some TLC and some of the staff need to sue the charm school they attended, will no be going back in a hurry.

Visited The Butter Cross on more than one occasion despite not being local. Worth a short journey for inexpensive food in a comfortable surroundings. Bingham is a nice market town and this 'Spoons compliments the place nicely. As ever, you know what you're getting and it ain't Heston Blumenthal. Heston Services is a closer likeness. But I do the place an injustice, it's a more than adequate pub with good food for the prices you are paying. Give it a go if Bingham is your destination.

Have been going here for Breakfast or Lunch for ten years, but sadly no more. All Wetherspoon's prices have rocketed. Spoons no longer competitive in pricing compared with other chains. Prices have been going up and up and portions getting smaller and smaller. Curry lunch balti bowl has shrunk to half size and price has increased. Only positive is great staff and cheaper beer, but sadly we will now be lunching elsewhere. Goodbye!

I do quite like a Wetherspoons (despite its clown of an owner) and I am fully aware that they vary between pubs from very good to rather poor. We decided to try this one as the Newark branch, our nearest, is about to close. The Butter Cross is certainly down the poor end of the spectrum. The first thing that you notice is the fact that it's not particularly clean and tidy. It wasn't busy when we visited but many tables were out of use due to being cluttered with dirty glasses and crockery. Only as we were leaving did anyone bother clearing and wiping tables that had been untouched for at least an hour. Clearly they are struggling to get staff and those that are there seem apathetic and wishing they were somewhere else. To be fair, the beer wasn't bad. They didn't have my first choice and actually only seemed to have a couple of cask ales available at all, but the one I chose was pleasant and well kept. We ordered food which arrived reasonably quickly. I quite like a Spoons fish and chips normally, but this offering was by far the worst I have ever been served in any of the many pubs where I've ordered it. The chips were the usual offering, small portion but edible. The mushy peas had started to dry out as if they had stood on the plate for a while. But the fish was quite dreadful. The batter was crunchy and greasy and the miserably thin piece of fish within was overcooked and tasteless. Is this a one-off, is the Butter Cross incapable of cooking fish, or is this now the Wetherspoons norm for their fish? My wife ordered the 10oz gammon, which should be served with 2 eggs. When it arrived, she queried the lack of eggs and eventually a reluctant woman arrived and dropped a plate on the table with a single egg on it. There was no enquiry at any point if we were happy with the meals, so perhaps they have given up on courtesy checks as they expect negative responses. Yes, we could have complained and sent the awful fish back. But it really wasn't worth the bother. We have just put it down to experience and will not be visiting again. Wetherspoons are struggling in some locations at the moment and it would not surprise me if this one fell by the wayside if it sets such poor standards.

This place has gone downhill,we have visited several times over the course of this year thinking it will be better next time. Unfortunately it’s not improving.it seems to be understaffed, tables needs cleaning and food service needs addressing. Had a luke warm full English. Didn’t complain as it’s really cheap. Peas have no taste. Childrens meals served on very hot plate. I could go on.it needs a good shake up and staff need better training although they have always been pleasant during our visits. Go here often, always good, however different staff today and no sign of the manager, our meal was delivered quickly and usually after two minutes they come back to see how it is, however this wasn’t the case today, my peas and chips were barely luke warm and the staff were more interested in going outside to try to open a car boot for a member of staff than deal with their customers, I waited patiently for someone to collect our plates and when they finally came ( fifteen minutes after we had finished) I complained and the girl said do you want more chips, NO I DIDN’T, she said she was sorry and that was that, not very good customer service

Just popped in for breakfast as a last minute decision, it was just ok but the portion sizes seem to have shrunk these days. My main reason for this review is ; the place is filthy, tables need a good scrub as my arms were sticking to them. There was food on the walls where we sat, the decor is getting quite tired and grubby looking. Not a pleasant place to be these days for food.

Visited last night for the first time after lock down, very worrying lack of social distancing youngsters hugging and standing close together especially at the bar. The toilets were in an appalling state the cubicle floors were swimming with urine, dirty glasses not collected and our table was not not cleaned the whole time we were there, the only bit of safety is the partitions between the tables. To finish the evening there was a mass brawl outside. One highlight was the meal was okay, the place looked very short staffed and I did feel very sorry for the staff who looked very stressed and were fighting a losing battle against some of the idiots who were in there. Tim Martin needs to make sure what Wetherspoons promised (a safe and clean environment) is delivered.

I have always tried to fly the flag for Wetherspoons....offers value for money, affordable night/meal out. However...........tonight, I had the vegan roast veg pizza. It was pitiful. There was the equivalent of 20p's worth of veg with a scraping of tomato paste/sauce.. The presentation was appalling....shame on you whoever chopped the vegetables. No love there. The place was awash with tables which had not been cleared. It was Tuesday, steak night, so it was busy but on the other hand for a place like Wetherspoons it would only cost 2 hours of minimum wage for someone to keep on top of that. Seriously, someone from management should come anonymously and see it from a customer's point of view.I daresay we will come again but I definitely will not be having the pizza.

After around 5 minutes a staff member came to the table to tell us that he had ran out of one of our desserts so we asked if we could have an alternative which the staff member said he wouldn't be able to accommodate (bananas and custard), so my friend was given a refund, my dessert arrived, we waited for the other and waited, and waited, I went to the bar and asked where the other dessert was and the staff member said he would check in it, after a further 10 minutes it arrived, by this point mine had gone cold. When you stand in the middle of the marketplace in BINGHAM in Nottinghamshire you get a sense of real history. This plot of land received a royal charter to become a market in 1341, but long before that William the Conqueror had passed the land which he had forcibly taken from 2 Saxon chieftains to give to a faithful follower, Robert de Builli . Many people stop here for lunch as it is between Newark and Nottingham. The marketplace had a renovation in 1860 when the Butter Cross was built

Tables not cleared nor glasses removed. Sat at table just inside the main door, quite drafty but preferable, as the further back I looked the grubbier it all seemed. Piles of dirty dishes and glasses on unclean tables. Unacceptable. The food was only just warm...

When Weatherspoons took over this place, it looked promising and the food and service was good. Unfortunately it has rapidly gone downhill and the service is poor and the food is not up to how it was when it opened a few years ago. I ordered a steak once to be well done, and it arrived virtually raw in the middle. If you complain, the management don't seem bothered and offer nothing in the way of complimentary items to compensate for it. Meals don't seem to come at the same time if there's more than two of you and you are kept waiting a long time. Recently I was dining there with about six other friends and we all got our meals at different times, and some of us had finished ours before the others were served. Dirty dishes on tables aren't cleared away very quickly and the floors have remnants of food on them which again are not cleared up. All the times I've been there I've never seen anyone sweeping under tables, especially when a party with young kids have left. The area at the rear of the place gets like a works canteen sometimes and is very noisy and you constantly get people passing through on their way to the smoking area outside - sit near the door and you are freezing cold because of this in the winter. I suspect they don't employ enough staff to be honest, but not a place I'd recommend to people anymore. I only go there now when I can't get in anywhere else.

We visited friends over the festive period and the 6 of us (4 adults 2 kids) visited the butter cross for lunch. The building itself is lovely and inside is beautiful and well done. It was busy but the staff were coping well. We ordered our food and were told it would be around 15-20 mins. Which was fine by us. Unfortunately when it all came they had forgotten my steak. I just got the side order of onion rings I’d ordered. When I mentioned this to the server he told me he was pretty sure he didn’t have my order and it took him around 5-8 mins to check. He did and told me it was on its way. Another 8-10 mins later it arrived. By this time all the other 5 had finished their meals which were lovely and all thoroughly enjoyed. There had steak, ham, egg and chips and lamb rogan josh. All were good. My steak was cooked how I like it and the food was great. I was disappointed I didn’t get complimentary onion rings with my order as the ones that came would have been stone cold had I not ate them whilst waiting. Or maybe a free drink/dessert or something in way of an apology for the fact that they messed up and I was left waiting and eating alone.

Cheap, but debatable whether it’s value-for-money. I had fairly low expectations, which certainly weren’t exceeded. If you need to fill stomachs on a budget (and want to eat out), then I suppose it ticks that box.

Recently posted a review about the Wheatsheaf in Bingham which seems to be carrying on a wine war with the White Lion to see who can charge the most for their overpriced and not very good wines! Compare and contrast The Buttercross - Wetherspoons - a lovely pint of Riddles and 175cl Villa Maria Sauvignon - TOTAL price £5.54. Food's not bad either for what it is!

My friends and I all had large breakfasts and couldn't fault anything. Food was good quality and cooked very nicely. Most of us left something as they were too large!!. Staff were friendly and attentive. Filter coffee was fine. One nit pick, it took a long time for the table to be cleared once we had finished. Thanks

One of the better Wetherspoons but spoiled by the racket of primary school kids (aged around 4/5/6) who infest the place late afternoon and are allowed to squeak in their noisy, irritating and penetrating tones. Parents should tell them to pipe down and "be seen and not heard". Otherwise it's a lovely pub. Joan.

This is a large Wetherspoons with some smaller rooms as well as the main bar area. The menu is usual Wetherspoons fayre with plenty of choice and good value offers. The food we had was very good and service was efficient. The restaurant was clean and nicely furnished, we shall certainly return.

having placed our order at the bar and recieving drinks it took three quarters of an hour to be served our meal only to have to send one meal back to the kitchen as scampi was under cooked, this was replaced twenty minutes later.half way through the meal we were then informed that the table we were sat at had been reserved for a 12 30 booking,no notice on the table when we sat at it.food could be a lot better, service was very poor and sorry to say senior staff could do with some training in people skill and person centred training.over all very poor

We had planned to meet some friends for breakfast which, is different to the normal lunchtime or evening routines. We chose to meet at this establishment as it was easy to get to and more importantly convenient. I must admit that this place has 'gone downhill'. It wasn't busy so the four of us ordered breakfast choices from the set menu. Almost everything was wrong and not what we ordered. I had to find the Manager to discretely tell him that the simple full English breakfast was missing the eggs, mushroom and bacon!! After waiting over 15 minutes later the other items arrived after the initial serving the rest went cold. There was no real apology from anyone. I know its a 'price lead' venue but, come on Wetherspoons shape up!!

My husband and I popped in for a meal last night. Whilst you can't grumble, as it's value for money, I was slightly disappointed with my meal. I had pasts salad with added chicken - the vegetables were soggy and the whole dish was Luke warm. I should have bet it back, so my fault. ( the free wine with the meal was good). My husband had scampi, which he said was nice, followed by a large piece of chocolate cske with icecream and cream. Needless to say, that hit the spot with him! I will be back, of course, as it is easy to pop in for a midweek meal.

Visited today (a Saturday) for coffee and cake with a friend. The cafe was almost empty with 2 staff working, yet it took forever for drinks to arrive. We asked for a menu and the waitress practically threw it at us. My friend ordered a fruit tea and asked that the water not be boiling hot, but she was told that the water came as it came (adding a bit of cold water before adding hot water would have sufficed). The server was quite sharp and blunt, we weren’t happy, so we left and spent our money somewhere else.

This is our favourite restaurant/pub and after three years of regular visits and superb food every time, I thought it worth a well-earned high-praise review. Apart from the occasional evening event, (they hold special themed nights from time to time), it's generally lunches we go for. The quality of the food is consistently high and the service very friendly and professional. The menu is understandably quite small, given that everything is cooked to order but seems varied enough for most tastes. Despite the high standard of cooking and produce, the prices are very competitive indeed. It does get quite busy some days despite being a bit off the beaten track, so best to book if possible. There is a large secluded back garden with seating, (where they hold their events), and a good children's play area. The building itself is still an old unspoilt country pub and serves at least two different real ale. Can't fault the Plough at all really.

Stopped in for lunch and some shopping. Tried fish n chips in cafe one with beans and other mushy peas. Very large fish, all fish unlike some the have half an inch batter on each end. Had to wait about 10 mins as cooked fresh and excellent value at £6.99 each.

Food was good however the customer service let the evening down a lot. The food order was taken wrong, understandable. We were charged for the more expensive one, unsure of the difference, I asked about this that was met with the manager being rude and giving us the 50p difference. Not a singular apology, especially with one of our meals arriving when the others were about finished. Ordering deserts was met with more rudeness from her and the whole interactions tainted our evening. After a few times of visiting here we won’t be back as would feel uncomfortable with her service again.
