The Butchers Arms in Cardiff

Absolutely fantastic food and service but the restaurant was so cold my toes hurt by the end of it! No heating at all. We kept our coats on for the most part. We wouldn't go back for this reason, until warmer weather.

Visited last Saturday for the first time. Have booked a comedy show there next month so wanted to check it out with my wife. A very lively atmosphere especially considering it was only 3 weeks since Xmas! Great range of lagers and beers. I’ve heard to food is good but we didn’t stay for dinner. A very vibrant pub lying in the middle of a very quiet leafy suburb of Cardiff.

Mi familia fue cálidamente recibida por una joven muy encantadora que casualmente mencionó que habían sido decepcionados por un número de empleados, sin embargo, para complacer a desnudar con ellos. Esto nunca fue evidente y nunca pudimos decir que eran personal corto, nos hicieron sentir especiales durante toda nuestra experiencia gastronómica, la comida era fantástica y el ambiente en su conjunto era festivo y agradable. Fui optimista acerca de salir a cenar en Navidad, ya que creía que perderíamos ese sentimiento mágico, pero eso no podría haber estado más lejos de la realidad. Muy recomendable para cualquiera que visite, ya hemos reservado en para Navidad 2025 , y planeando visitar de nuevo a mediados de semana para uno de sus menús especiales. Comida increíble Personal increíble. Disfrutamos cada minuto. No puedo esperar para reservar de nuevo para el próximo año. El pavo era precioso. Estaba muy ocupado, pero lograron sacar comida muy rápido

Definitivamente no voy a ir a este pub de nuevo. Decoración desaliñada, marcos de ventanas mohosos y alfombras sucias, no invita a quedarse a comer e imaginaría que es una calidad horrible de "clásico pub" recalentado! Cerveza real estándar de la ciénaga y un capuchino que parecía bien, pero carecía de mucho sabor a café. El personal era amable y servicial en el bar. Es una pena que este pub no esté a la altura de la encantadora zona. Desesperadamente necesita una actualización y podría ser un lugareño que le gustaría frecuentar.

Reservado para el día de Navidad , que experiencia tan terrible , entrantes tardaron una hora en llegar la comida no estaba a la altura , la red principal luego vino una hora más tarde que luego esperó 10 minutos para verdura y 20 minutos para salsa , mi pobre nieta puso su tenedor en el pavo que se dejó tanto tiempo en una placa caliente que era duro y seco que no se podía comer , la carne de res era dos filetes delgados en un plato raro , el desierto era otra hora que era un plato de diminutos desiertos entre la mesa , llegamos a las 2 . 30 para sentarnos a las 3 de la tarde, que no nos sentamos hasta las 3 . 30 pm y esperé afuera en el frío con mi madre de 88 años. Pagué 480 libras. 0 por esta experiencia , para resumir esto fue como torres defectuosas , nunca volvería a ir allí .

Family of seven First time going out for Christmas lunch and was really looking forward to it. Had high hopes as the whole family visit often for Sunday lunch which is lovely So disappointing. Hor d’oeuves were seven small , what looked like frozen party food on a small sharing plate The turkey main consisted of meat veg (mushy carrots parsnips and two Brussels sprouts for the entire party!!!! No other vegetables as you would expect for a Christmas dinner ie cauliflower cheese peas carrot and swede mash etc . Desert seven minuscule pieces of different squares of desserts . No Christmas pudding no coffee . Absolutely terrible! Meal cost over £300 . I will never go there again. Manager disinterested.

Sorprendentemente mal almuerzo de día de Navidad en este pub ... reservado en septiembre para 14 personas nos pusieron en una mesa larga en un bar lleno de gente . . no donde esperábamos estar, es decir, el restaurante principal . con la gente haciendo cola para las bebidas detrás de mi silla y frente al baño de señoras Esperamos más de 2 horas para la comida . . honestamente no bromeo . . la comida era absolutamente espantoso . . No hay salsa... comida fría no hay condimentos y un pequeño tazón de postre de verduras duras... no muchos en nuestra mesa ni siquiera tenían verduras... ambiente frenético con camareros corriendo y golpeando la espalda de la gente... pagamos 60 libras cada uno y 100 libras por bebidas... He cenado Navidad en otros pubs de Cardiff y siempre he tenido una buena experiencia. Cuando se hizo una denuncia nos dijeron que era Navidad lo que esperábamos. . desastre absoluto y tuvimos visita familiar desde Australia. Nos fuimos sin desiertos ya que algunos de nuestra familia tenían otros compromisos para la noche... carniceros que son codiciosos e incompetentes... Fue un caos absoluto y una experiencia realmente mala.

A great comedy night, just wrap up warm.

I was there two week ago with some family and friends we wanted to have a good time but there was a waiter called Alex he ruined the whole night for us, he was rushing us to saying our orders and put us under pressure and didn’t give us much time to look at the menu. He was also very rude with his attitude and tone also he was bickering in another language every time he spoke to us and overall he was very rude and ruined our night I will not be visiting again but hopefully action will be taken so other customers don’t have to go through it

Booked a table for 20 and had the 2 course xmas menu. Fabulous food for the price and wonderful staff

Go there mainly for live bands on Fridays which vary in quality.. sometimes charge £2 for squash which is too much but price varies. Food very good

Had fish pie,disappointed as not much fish mainly white fish not a variety of fish. and had 9 chips,and frozen peas.The food was good.

It was my first time visiting Cardiff and went to the restaurant within the first few hour of being there. I have heard Cardiff is amazing and unfortunately this place did not give us that amazing feeling. We arrived at 18:30 on a Monday evening to be thrust menus at as the kitchen was closing at 19:00. He mentioned that we will not be able to order starters and made it obvious that we were required to order quickly. I didn't get offered a drink, everyone on the table ordered wine but he didn't say or provide the opportunity for us to order other beverages, we had to ask in the end. As it felt rushed I tried to order a starter as a main, requesting a larger portion but they were not able to do this. When our food arrived the waiter didn't offer condements and gave us 3 bottles of empty vinegars. He kept coming up and clearing the plates away before we had all finished. We mentioned this was rude and he complained to us that the kitchen staff wouldn't clean it because they were going (we could see them all in an empty room watching telly). At 19:05 we paid and he had his coat on ready to go. It was a shame because the food was nice and it had a potential for a lovely evening.

What’s happened? Sunday lunch we’re amazing👍 But went on Sunday 3rd of November and it wasn’t even the same taste Ordered beef with extra meat so I decided to have turkey But when it came only had 1 pice of beef and 1 pice of turkey. My wife had pork of which see had 5 slices Wasn’t worth the price

We had dinner on a Friday evening. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. In our opinion, this restaurant/pub is a true hidden gem. It has the seal of approval from our 10 year old son, which is probably the equivalent of an Olympic gold medal or a Nobel prize 😉 In addition to the restaurant, it is extremely popular as a pub. It caters mostly for the more mature demographic.

Had a great night here the other night for the comedy night. Although a little cold but to be expected as its outside. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a laugh and a pint. Be prepared to be interacted with though as they get the crowd involved

Super friendly and traditional pub, with excellent food and wine . We come for the quiz on a Thursday night and some other times for a drink. Has sport on and large outside area.

Use here for a regular mid-week lunch in the bar. Staff always friendly and helpful. Good menu selection. Good value.

Ordered two Sunday lunch, Both beef and lamb were very tough. Food went cold very quickly. Ordered apple crumble for dessert and this was also cold. Nice pub but will not go to eat again.

What a lovely pub hidden in the streets of rhiwbina. They have a separate restaurant area and the food and the service was first class! We were so impressed and will definitely be visiting again

Great venue live bands every Friday and last Saturday of the month of varying quality..food been good every time I had some. Expensive soft drinks £2 for squash more than the vast majority of others I visot

A lovely Sunday lunch marred by an over familiar restaurant manager. Haven’t been here for food in a while but my hubby fancied lamb and after searching we found that it was served here. Shown to our table by a lovely waitress and drinks ordered. We ordered our food and it came as expected and was very tasty, fresh veg, bit disappointing there was only two roast potatoes and that you had to pay extra for a Yorkshire pudding (what is that about)?! I actually finished my meal before my husband most unusual but it was then announced to the entire restaurant by the ‘manager’!!! Not appropriate he then did I want a straw for my wine?!?! I’m not used to being spoken to like that or to pay £89 for a Sunday lunch and to be made to feel uncomfortable which was how I felt. My husband wasn’t impressed at all. We ordered a cheeseboard and more wine but sadly we felt uncomfortable. It was noted that he spoke to several far older diners in the same brash over familiar tone. Such a shame due to that we won’t be returning

Great pub unlike many that you find in Cardiff these days. Proper atmosphere and superb for watching sports - the beer garden is lovely and as it's undercover it's perfect for all weather types and if busy indoors. Live band always great on a Friday too - parking very easy as well which makes it very convenient if you're not local

Great live music venue. Saw the S’punkles there when the drummer exploded.

The meal was excellent, as was the beer which was kept and served well, and a great band were playing making it an all round excellent evening 😊

Amazing food, excellent service

Dropped in for a quick half after a long walk, very warm welcome from the landlord. Lots of people having food which looked good, staff were very attentive.

I had the seafood platter, hubby had the venison steak.. they were both amazing!!

One of cardiffs nicest pubs. It feels like a ‘proper’ pub and not just another one in a chain. The staff are amazing and the restaurant is great value for money. I just wish it was my local.

Excellent fish dishes, my Mother had the sea bass and I had the fish platter. Both beautifully cooked. My husband had the venison and loved it. The house white wine was very good. We will definitely be going back

Have eaten here several times over the years - and the fairly recent change of management has not resulted in any problems at all. We were a small group and each one ate something different - everyone was very pleased. Service was friendly and relaxed, but efficient; the food seemed freshly prepared and tasty - everyone enjoyed their lunch.

First visit and very impressed by pleasant service and excellent menu variety and exquisite dishes.

Disappointed my wife had the Gammon Meal with the egg. The Gammon was very very salty which meant she only had 1 mouthful. Felt like we paid a lot for egg and chips. My meal which was fish was ok. The waiter collect our plates looked surprised the Gammon was left. We seen the waiter show his manager the Gammon was not touched. Felt like he thought that’s ok. You would think he would asked us if all was ok. Result is we will not eat again in the old butchers, so a lost customer on the food. I except I should have made a complaint. A lovely pub but will eat elsewhere.

Proper boozer pub, with a big selection of beers. Lots going on by way of music, quizzes etc. The food is of a solid pub standard too. If you're looking for a good pub to watch the game, have a burger and some decent beers you won't to far wrong here.

Superb Sunday lunch. The place has been done up nicely and was full of diners. Service was very efficient from friendly young staff. Starters of kofta lamb and prawn cocktail were very good, and mains of roast beef and pork could not be faulted. Desserts of bread and butter pudding and creme brulee were good too. To be recommended!

Food was lovely and freindly and welcoming staff.

Great to have live music, the venue is vibrant and full of live music revelers. Band fugitives were excellent. They played two sets music for all eras, well done to staff and management for a well run establishment.

Always good for a few pints. Large draft beer selection. Landlord has recently added more real ales. Big bar area and large covered deck outside. Good for a quiet drink and excellent for sports with almost all rugby and football being shown and bar is well staffed so never a long wait. Highly recommend!

I’m really sad to write this review as we have had Sunday lunch here on a few occasions and it’s been very good. However when we ate off the normal menu this weekend it was dire. This was the worst curry I have ever had the misfortune to put in my mouth! The chicken was fatty / rubbery, I couldn’t even be sure it was chicken. It was lukewarm and tasteless, it had a smell of curry but was weirdly bland. I wondered if I had covid!!!!! The chips were too soft & fluffy. We both felt sick eating it, and were ill overnight. The other member of the party had a burger, ate 2 bites and left the rest as she didn’t think the meat (bacon & burger) was cooked. Will be unlikely to eat here again

Have eaten here many times over the years and always found it to serve good pub food. Ate here again recently and it was the best ever. The food was well cooked and presented - freshly prepared, generous in quantity, and tasty. Service was friendly and efficient. Good value and quality.

We had a lovely lunch at the Butchers Arms last week. Excellent food and service. Will definitely visit again.

Booking is recommended, although the team did great to fit us in. The food was exemplary, two of us had deep fried cod, chips and garden peas, and one chose the vegetarian chicken (plant protein) and noodles. The dessert choices were great, the lemon meringue roulade was delicious. Fairly busy, and we left before the live band started. Will definitely return. Enough disabled parking is lacking, however the overflow car park has many spaces very near the beer garden entrance.

Wow! Very impressed with the food we had this evening. Great choice, delicious food and all tasted fresh. Very good vegan/vegetarian options. Two of us had deserts and they were also fab and the fresh fruit on the side were stunning. I'll definately be going again

Went for Sunday lunch. Food was OK, meat was excellent, but charged 2 pounds for a frozen Yorkshire pudding. Veg tasted frozen too. Food was just plonked on the table, didn't ask if I wanted anything... Which I did.

Recently I've enjoyed both lunch & dinner in this restaurant. The food (especially the specials) is lovely. On both occasions I had the cape cod, last week it was cooked in a creamy leek sauce & served on a bed of mash. 5 members of our party choose this dish & we weren't disappointed. This is a local privately owned pub which serves exquisite food. The décor is slightly dated but the food is fab ! Will definitely return.

Called in yesterday. Lovely homely pub, quite old fashioned in style. Had sour dough brushcetta with tomatoes and mozzarella which was lovely (like a margarita pizza) and hubby had Bajan chicken which was nice but would have preferred it spicier as was very mild.

I get the same antipasto sharing board everytime and it is ALWAYS different. There is no consistency. Some days it's not worth ordering because it's small or the selection is so limited.

Drinks okay, priced high but where isn't at the moment. Bad service though, not all staff, just a couple very rude and impatient (disabled member of group), unaccommodating is an understatement.

The burger was extremely chewy with no taste, only managed a few bites , what a waste of money , very dissapointing .

We had the lunch menu which was simple but good. The salmon was excellent and the Scampi was not only good but the portion was generous too. I will be back!

Lunch on 1 March was poor. We had bruschettas on soda bread that you could have soled your shoes with. My toasted veg + feta was sparse, + the spinach + red pepper was top heavy with spinach+ not much red pepper. The lounge had no heating + was freezing. Not worth the effort.

Quite busy on a weekday evening which is a good sign. Restaurant was full so I ate in the bar. Menu wasn't huge , but full of Welsh classics. The pate was nice and smooth and a large portion. The hunters chicken I chose because of the accompanying sweet potato fries. It was all well cooked and tasty. Notable was the speed in which the food came out , quite quickly. Also notable was the fact that it was a little cold inside ( review written in Feb 2023, outside temperature if around 8 ). A lot of people had jumpers on. There was a nice selection of ales at the bat including two of my favourites , Doom Bar being one. I will go back. Reccomended.

A popular local pub located close to Rhiwbina village, traditional decor, good range of ales, multiple screens showing live football.

Just had a buffet following a funeral couldn't fault it.Good selection of sandwiches and picky food including cake &biscuits all very fresh and tasty.Would highly recommend it. Many thanks to Tony and all the staff

Very comfortable surroundings.The restaurant was lovely, our meal came quickly and was delicious, l had the chicken curry. It's ground level but has a few steps to enter the pub.but is fine for wheelchair users Lovely toilets, including a disabled one, clean well kept. Pub is good for children, good variety of food including vegetarian options. They dont deliver. Has a beer garden as well. We enjoyed our evening.
