Pear Tree in Cardiff

By far the worst run pub in Cardiff. It’s no secret Marstons have ruined Welsh pubs. Completely understaffed. Terrible food. Avoid at all costs

Booked table, was ready on arrival. Staff friendly, and my dog was welcome too

Lovely place and very welcoming. Have had lovely food each time we have come at lunchtime/ afternoon. Would recommend.

Paid a £30 deposit in good faith for Christmas Day lunch at the Pear Tree, unfortunately they cancelled the lunch due to management issues. Why am I still fighting to get my deposit back? Why have all my emails and telephone calls been ignored? I have even emailed Marston's several times with no response. Please resolve this matter and refund me ASAP, I think it's gone on long enough now.

Tables full of empty glasses upstairs and down for the 2hrs we were there. It was very busy

The lady and gent who ran the whole place between them did an amazing job. Friendly, helpful and efficient. Also still hosts the best quiz in Cardiff

Food cheap but tasteless. I would rather pay a bit more and get better quality. Flawless service. The lady was nice. What catches the eye are dirty tables (literally all of them), full of dust and dirt in every corner. I hope the kitchen was cleaner, because I'm afraid to eat.

We had a group booking and arrived on time, had some drinks and were waiting for the food. First dish arrived after 30-40 minutes of waiting and was ok. Then we waited another 40 minutes for main course to arrive. I have approached the waiting staff to learn that there was just one cook and it will be sorted. In the end food arrived and was presented well and served promptly. Lastly, we have waited about 20 minutes for dessert which was an old sticky toffee pudding which tasted of mould. All who had it, expressed the same disappointment. We have dine in the pub over the last 3 years and sometimes service or food was not great but never were so bad as this time. It is a shame but we are changing the venue. There was a Bobbie waitress who was the only one who cared and the guy behind the bar who was sympathetic. Other then that, there is nothing I can recommend.

Decent pub but the toilets have no tissue

An ok pub that serves reasonable food. Service was very slow when I visited. It's a bit expensive for what it is.

Pasé ayer con unos amigos después de un día ajetreado de compras navideñas. Esta fue la parada perfecta antes de volver a casa desde la ciudad. Ambiente muy agradable con personal amable y acogedor. Solo paramos para tomar una copa rápida y tal vez un aperitivo ligero, pero decidimos ir a cenar y no nos decepcionó. Tomé una lasaña, mi amigo una hamburguesa de pollo y otro amigo fue por el filete. Nuestros platos fueron limpiados 😆 Esta era la pequeña parada y recarga acogedora perfecta que necesitábamos. Hermoso pub. Recomendar

A slightly disappointing visit - the Sunday lunch was ok but I think the kitchen was essentially understaffed as we were warned puddings would take a long time to prepare but after 30 mins we gave up. It feels like the place could use a bit of TLC.

Food was good pub grub, but had to wait 90 mins for it today. They were clearly understaffed for a Sunday, long wait at the bar, staff seemed a bit grumpy; and place was a bit grubby in general. Shame, as said - Food was solid

Returned after 2 years to give this place a second chance after a disappointing visit due to poor customer service Sorry to say still poor service and the most miserable female staff I’ve come across. Messed up food order and had no apology. The nacho sharer starter was a joke. Small portion of nachos with squirty cheese and avacado and salsa from a jar. It was disgusting. Great local pub that could be amazing but fails on many levels.

After just moving into the area I wanted to find a local pub - after visiting 4 last week. The positives - friendly customers and atmosphere. However, the service is diabolical, with the staff on my first visit picking customers from the queue to serve; one can only guess that these were friends. I would not be visiting here again and would not recommend this venue as there are far nicer and more professional venues within walking distance

If you get a job from this pub or this company avoid it!!!!!!!!!! My dad was not paid for the hours he worked at this place and the hr department promised to pay us on the October 7th then ended up not paying and lead me on saying on the November it’s the November 9th now and we still haven’t got paid This is so unprofessional if they don’t pay us I will have to take actions against this idgaf I will do do anything to get the money

Good range of drinks including Brains Bitter which was served in great condition. Nice atmosphere, and some very interesting family photos on the walls. Gents toilet could do with some improvements.

Ordered the steak medium. It was cooked well. The chips were nice, mushrooms were missing and the peas were inedible. The server spent so long chatting to friends on the next table she forgot the mustard I asked for. Only giving it 4* as the steak was lovely.

A wonderful venue with excellent food and fast service.

Food is just average. The staff is not that friendly and they seem quite annoyed all the time. Used to be much better a few years ago. Now it's just a very average pub.

Staff will leave you standing at the bar for ten minutes, will chat amongst themselves then will refuse service when you interrupt their conversation.

Food was lovely but we were served by the most miserable barmaid with a proper attitude problem. We scanned the barcode on menu to order off the app and when food was served we were told we weren't supposed to order off the app. There were no signs saying this and when I pointed to the menu to show her it she grabbed it off table almost took my partners eye out then rolled her eyes and stormed off. Won't be returning. 29/09/24 @ 3pm

Visited here with my husband and daughter for a Sunday roast a couple of weeks ago and it was brilliant. The service was really good, portion sizes spot on and the beef in particular was really good. They also had a nice beer garden and outside seating area which was nice for enjoying a bottle of wine after the meal. Will definitely return if staying in the area again in the future.

Booked a table for a family birthday. A fee of us had the steak and we were all so happy with our food! Steak was cooked perfectly. Very good drinks selection. We had a great night thanks to the staff who were friendly and very helpful. Will definitely be coming back.

as a local, The Pear Tree used to be ok but has seriously gone downhill. The toilets are disgusting now (one had zero paper, the other didn't have a toilet seat, horrible/offensive graffiti all over the walls, water all over the floor.) Just feels like a dive now. For somewhere charging £6 a pint, you'd think there would be effort or reason to justify such prices.

Just popped in for lunch and chose the Ultimate Veggie Burger. One of the best I have had in a long while. It included super tasty cauliflower bites and cheese sauce. Gorgeous! And the fries were super crispy with a tasty salsa on the side. Accompanied by a delicious New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. A great lunch!

Get the pulled pork loaded fries with a side of wings - you will not regret it! We go here at least once a week for the delicious chippies and coffee. Staff are also great :)

Over priced and too upmarket for this side of the city.

We selected the Thursday evening food & drink deal - Steak and a drink. The food choices were sirloin or rump steaks or gammon. I ordered one rump and one sirloin, and was told that there was only rump available. I changed the order. Then I ordered drinks. Of the draught drinks in the offer, there was NO lager available, only cider or real ale. I was told I could 'upgrade' to a different lager for £1. I don't find that acceptable and feel that if no lagers from the deal list were available, then an alternative should be offered at the same price. When our meal came it was reasonable value for money in terms of portion size and quality. However the experience of eating it was poor since apparently the pub has 'no steak knives'. We interacted with the same bar person / server throughout this experience, and honestly I felt she couldn't have cared less.

Popped in for a pint before a "Nearly Dan " concert at the Globe just down the road. Weather was nice so we sat outside. Good pint and nice atmosphere.

I used to love this place but now the upstairs area is cordoned off until the evening and you can't have coffee or tea either later on. Why do you turn customers away?

The food and service very good value.. unfortunately there were 2 old guys talking loudly and constantly using the f word..we couldn't move tables as they were all occupied.. they're obviously regulars as it isn't the first time it's happened..we weren't the only customers who found it disturbing..why the proprietors haven't addressed this situation we find really puzzling..we won't be going back.

I had a delightful experience at The pearl Tree where I enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee and my partner a refreshing pint of San Miguel. The combination of the rich, bold flavors of the coffee and the crisp, smooth taste of the the beer was truly satisfying. The atmosphere was inviting and the service was excellent, making it a memorable and enjoyable outing, The weather is nice . I would definitely recommend The Pear Tree to anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable beverage experience.

Food took nearly an hour and half to come while other tables were served!! Staff was very told when we asked if the table could be wiped down as it had a spilled drink on it from a previous customer!

Visited the Pub for a few Pints before a Gig at the "Globe," which is nearby ... Nice surroundings and reasonably priced ... Would go again next time in the area.

Went out last night and popped into a few locals, this venue we were passing so headed in and it was lovely. Nice atmosphere, and calm in there. Bar staff was lovely and perched up in a corner and supped our drinks for an hour. Will come back to try food next time, menu sounded great

Went to pear tree for a drink on a Saturday night and all the staff were rude and couldn’t care about any of their guests. Decided to give it another go for a Sunday roast and got there after booking well in advance, to find out there were no roasts left. When mentioned to staff that we were disappointed yet again they couldn’t care less and didn’t make us feel welcome.

Booked a table for Sunday roast only to be told on arrival that they aren't doing roasts for the whole month of January, which wasn't advertised anywhere online. Not the end of the world, however the menus had food stuck to them, there were dirty wet wipes on the table, no toilet roll at all in the gents, no dairy alternatives for coffee, and several items we ordered not available. Usually enjoy visiting this pub but it's become clear the place needs new management to run it better.

We came here for a late lunch this afternoon around 2 o'clock . According to the menu, they serve lunch till 3pm. However, we were told the chef had taken a break already and no food would be served! We were so disappointed and had to pay for the drinks we ordered before we left.

Excellent food served promptly. Very impressed that food was piping hot and served as requested good choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Great tasting coffee. Staff were attentive and helpful.

Loved the atmosphere of the pub, rustic furniture looks fab. We wanted to bring our dog and it was very relaxing having her there. The lady behind the bar even brought fresh water over for her without being asked. Service was excellent- one staff member seemed to be doing everything and she was great, very friendly and helpful. Really nice food (prawn salad and southern chicken followed by sticky toffee pudding) My son lives nearby and we will definitely be back xx

If you would like to feel undervalued, be served a glass of wine @£9.95 in a warm tumbler and visit dirty toilets without toilet roll, this is the place for you. Tbf- after a protracted conversation with the supervisor she did agree to refund the wine, which I happily returned. This was one of Brains Premium Outlets, which did charge premium prices, the service under Brains was excellent. You were welcomed at the door, dogs fussed and given treats and water and there were adequate staff on busy Friday & Saturday nights. Marstons are charging the premium prices however the service is well below par. We certainly won’t be visiting again anytime soon.

Absolutely shocking to have one very hard working bar staff at a lunchtime, taking orders, making coffee and serving food. The management need to be replaced with someone with competence. No good coming here if you’re hungry and thirsty!!!!

Pints are quite overpriced but we had friendly service from the bar staff and the place was nice and busy so the atmosphere was decent on a Saturday night.

We asked for a rump steak to be cooked medium rare and it was more medium to well done and very, very tough, two x fish and chips - very few chips and the fish was flat rather than big chunks and burger and chips - small portion and average. Would not recommend.

Fantastic local bar, really friendly staff and an array of offers

A nice pub just up the road from the live music venue, The Globe. We wanted to stop and grab something to eat beforehand and a great little spot to stop and grab some food and a pint. Spiral stairs to upper floor and spiral stair down to toilets so not great if you have mobility issues. My fish and chips were great but some of our party said it was not so great so 4 stars.

Booked a table for 7:30, paid for a taxi, bought a drink and then told no tables can be booked on Sundays! Tell that to my booking reference! Awful experience, bank holiday weekend in tatters! Family in tears!

Cancelled our two week old booking on the day. Not impressed. Had been looking forward to celebrating my birthday with friends.

A group of us came here on a busy Friday evening. Waited a while at the bar, asked for a glass of wine and was told no wine glasses available at the moment and he offered half a pint glass!! For an overpriced £9 glass of wine I would appreciate a glass. Glass was brought to table and was warm as just came out of dishwasher. Not great if drinking a cold rose. Then the worst part. My hunters chicken.... very dry. A few luke warm chips, 2 tiny onion rings, a tiny side salad (lettuce) and the smallest amount of bbq sauce and cheese on the chicken it was basically a dry chicken breast as the sauce had just soaked into it. The chef should be embarrassed. So tight on portions!! I asked for some more bbq sauce expecting them to bring over a warm bowl from the kitchen but instead had a Heinz bbq bottle plonked down! Awful, overpriced experience. Will not be returning.
