Called into the Burnt Stump today (Sunday 20th April) for drinks after visiting Papplewick Pumping Station with my Wife and Grandchild, something we always look forward to doing when we've visited the area before and there's never been any problems previously. First of all there is now the car parking issue, noted by others (to their cost) where you have to register your car, or receive a fine........That's going to bring in the punters in isn't it? After registering my car number plate, I went to the bar, which was only moderately busy. There was a Gentleman ordering a meal and drinks, being served by the Barmaid, then a another Fella' behind him, then me. Elsewhere at the bar were a couple of Women talking, with at least one dog with them. They had already been served and at the far end was another person being served by a young Man, who was dealing with Coffees or Hot Chocolates. The first Gentleman was served and then the Fella' next to me, who was just ordering drinks was next to be served by the Barmaid. As part of his order, he ordered a pint of Old Mout Berries and Cherries Cider. He took a couple of drinks and then said he would be back for the Cider, which was being poured under the bar. Then it was my turn to be served. Also a pint of Old Mout Cherries and Berries Cider, a J2O and a Blackcurrant and Soda. Meanwhile the two Women with the dog, had left the bar area and were replaced by another Lady who pointed out that the Women's dog had peed all over the floor. Obviously this wasn't the Pub's staff fault, but a member of the staff had to be informed to bring a bucket and mop, which would have distracted the bar staff somewhat. I was served with the Cider by the Barmaid, which was placed DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME and NOT to the side where the Fella' had just left and was to return. I naturally assumed then, that this was MY drink and his was ready and poured under the bar. As it was a tall, thin glass filled to the top, I drunk the top off to make it easier to carry. The Fella then returned to ask where his drink was and the Barmaid looked at me. I said well it must be this one then, but it was given directly to me and I would give it to him but I'd already supped a bit. The Barmaid curtly said 'It wasn't placed in front of you!!", I said it was. She insisted "No it wasn't, it was placed there!!!", pointing about four feet away from me where the Fella' had been stood originally. Why would I reach across the bar to steal a drink that I would have known damn well belonged to someone else that was coming back to fetch it???!!! Brawls have been known to break out in bars for much lesser accusations. Luckily the Fella' was easy going, although I could tell he believed the Barmaid over me. I should have just walked out at that point, as after asking me again what the final of the three drinks I ordered was (not so sure of herself after all then), I was then charged £6.50 for the Old Mout Cider alone. I won't be making that mistake in a Marston's pub again! Should any staff care to watch the CCTV back to see where the drink was placed, please check on today's footage, Sunday April 20th, at a time between 12.30pm and 1.15pm in the Afternoon (I paid in cash, so can't check the exact time), for me in a dark blue jumper and jeans, at the middle corner of the L-shaped bar, with a Fella' in a baseball cap next to me that came and went and then came back and you will see that your member of staff was very wrong and insulting to a member of the public, who will be thinking twice about going back to the pub any time in the near future!

We gave this place a try on our way back from an afternoon out, and with its woodland setting, looked ideal for a quick fix for tea. Entered pub to bar staff that weren't interested in any kind of welcome, hey ho, found a table after passing a couple that weren't clear or clean, with some heavily stained chairs. NOT a great first impression. Ordered with different member of staff at the bar who was courteous & efficient. Opted for burgers, they came, they were OK. At no point during any interaction with staff did they mention car parking charges or registering our vehicle. Shocked a couple of weeks later as we received a parking fine of £100 (£60 if paid quickly) from this establishment for not registering our car on arrival, had the bar staff warned us, we would definitely registered, but when you park up with the intention of supporting a local business by spending over £50 you don't expect a penalty for your custom, no appeals or proof of purchase to waiver the fee, shocking treatment of customers, staff should warn you just incase you're not aware or don't see the signs, as we didn't ! Plenty of better eateries in the area that don't charge extra for parking so will definitely NOT be back.

My wife and I had a drink outside in the sitting area, we were discussed by the filthy condition of the area , which was very dirty with earth and weeds growing on top of the paved surface plus the disgusting condition of the tables and seating. Their prices are astronomical! One pint of beer and a small glass of white wine £13.50!! The wine was flat and warm, on bringing this to the attention of the bar staff we were told that we had only ordered the cheapest wine and that was how it was! My advice , don’t go there! Avoid this place like the plague!!

The place really needs a refurbished. Tables and chairs in bad condition. Also the tall young lad behind the bar made no eye contact and seemed depressed like he didn’t want to be there and like it was a chore to help us. The other staff though were fine. The food was actually really good compared to previous visits so please keep this up.

Came here thanks to a 30% discount voucher received through the post. Used to come here all the time as it was near where school friends lived and was convenient but not been there for a while. Anyway, welcoming service and kind hosting. Marstons set the drinks prices and they're absolutely extortionate - please review. The food was fresh and tasty and really good value for money. Only had a burger and chips but was really good to be fair and a lot better than I remember from when I last went. What you come here for is the surroundings and the setting, it's absolutely beautiful. I look forward to coming back again in the future in the summer and enjoying a drink and some food outside. A big well done and note of appreciation to the staff on duty, you're all superstars.

We called in with the family on our way home from our day out to get some food because we didn't want to cook when we got home but the bar area was a little bit scruffy and the tables outside had food and glasses all over them. food was very disappointing - the nachos were missing the guacamole, when we mentioned this the waitress went to fetch some only to come back and say it wasn't on because there wasn't any - we should be told this at time of of ordering or certainly before the food comes out in case we prefer to order something else - very cheap tasting nachos and they would be nicer if they were served with real cheese & sour cream - I ordered the veggie chilli - so again no guacamole & the chilli was poor & watery - presumably frozen & microwaved - my husband had the gammon which was burnt in parts & stringy, fries were mushy & not crispy - we have no plans to come back!

Came to the burnt stump on a nice sunny day, mid week, it was very busy so service wasn’t the best but they were short staff so I understand as I work in the industry as well. We kept on seeing a girl running in and out of the pub clearing plates and glasses, when she cleared our plates she told us her name was Charlotte, every time we saw her she always had a smile on her face.

I had booked a table of 6 for my 50th birthday. We arrived and went to order food / initially 2 of the 4 starters were unavailable, then went on to order the main courses and 2 of the 6 were unavailable we then chose something else to be advised that these were unavailable too and so chose again - not a good start, we then waited well over an hour for our food which some was lovely and some was cold but by this point it was gone 8.30 - we booked at 7 so wasn’t going to send back but no one checked if our food was ok anyway! To be honest for a special family birthday meal it was ruined. I spent over £170 and feel we were robbed! Also the starters we chose they only had part of and said they would double up the portion as they couldn’t change the price and that certainly wasn’t the case as we got about 8 pieces of popcorn chicken!

Decent pub food, but had a burger and the lettuce was really soggy and no other greens on it. Giving three stars because I assume it's not always like this and it wasn't exactly different than my expectation. We arrived and there was only one table free and clean; next to an open exterior door. We spotted no less than 8 (!) dirty tables with dishes and food on. The staff are mostly very young and despite being personable and friendly, there didn't seem to be any sense of urgency, lots of hanging around, chatting to the manager and colleagues. The manager, bless her, was very lovely, running around doing all the jobs, serving people l, checking in on the guests. She was wonderful, but she could do with more pro-active staff. She gets all three stars. The place is unfortunately falling apart, dirty, broken and messy. It's a shame because it's a wonderful location and it used to be a lovely pub with great food.

The manager thinks because my son and his friend started their motor bikes in the car to leave after spending money in the pub , she can blackmail him in to leaving 5 good reviews about her pub online and wants him to write a letter of apology How's about this ya pubs overpriced and needs a good clean love and u should treat your staff better because you are abusing your powers as management and I will take this higher if needs be because your not bullying My son like you do your staff !! And as for them waking up your child if you was that bothered you wouldn't live above a pub , and as for your parking fine your also blackmailing him with I will see you in court first as their are no signs to say you have to enter your reg or promoting from staff on arrival, but this can be 1 of your 5 reviews or I could go 1 better and go to the local PAPER !! And tell them local pub landlady likes to bully young teenage boys !! I will also be contacting Marston

If i could it zero stars i would. Awful. So awful we couldn't complain because we were laughing so much it was a farse. Food came out. Salad put onto a hot 🔥 plate. Warm salad 🤢. Jacket potato drier than the sahara desert had to lather it in mayo. Peri peri chicken overcooked some of it was so dry it was like cardboard. My sister had the hunters chicken baguette the bread was stale/dry she's glad she had sauce on it. Sister in law had the smaller portion of the hunters chicken. Didn't know chickens had cheeks because that was the size of the chicken portion. Salad with this dish again on a hot plate so the few salad leaves that was classed as a salad were wilted. Will definitely not be back or recommending it.

It used to be a good pub to dine in and have a few drinks but lately it has gone down hill and specialy the manager is very rude too. I also got a parking fine which there it used to be a free parking and also none of the staff never told me anything to register my car in the system even though I spoke to the pub manager today and she was very rude and not helpful at all. I think they are trying to make some money through the parking fines now because they have lost all the customers with their bad service and the poor quality of food. I have frequented the Burnt Stump for many years. The service has usually been excellent. It started to decline about 3 years ago and has not recovered. The problem lies with the management of the serving staff. While the food is very good. The tables are often dirty and left uncleared. I visited again today at about 2-30pm. The bar staff bordered on rudeness. What with their yes no answers they couldnt have been less welcoming. The Burnt Stump is desperately in need of refurbishment, so is the floor staff. Food, no problem.

Terrible food. The place looks like it’s been abandoned. No care for there furniture. Implemented private companies to charge you if you don’t sign your car in. Therefore forcing you to go inside when you just want to go for a walk. The car park shouldn’t even be allowed to be called one as it’s full of pot holes and uneven ground. for people who have been coming here for years then get fined as your not aware of the change is a big put off. So I won’t be visiting again.

Really disappointing. Booked a table which was occupied when we arrived so staff had to move people. Was seated right next to the pool table, so close was it to our table that my friend was almost hit in the head by people playing and had to dodge pool ques. Walked up to the bar only to wait for 15 minutes and be routinely ignored by bar staff. Other staff doing pointless jobs whilst the par is packed (like stacking mugs?) Leaving one staff member to try and serve everyone. Pub is very run down. Menu has been significantly reduced, so not much choice. There is a dog menu too, if you want to include your pup. Water bowls available and a station to buy dog treats from. First of, I feel that since my initial review this system has been spammed with false 5 star reviews. The pictures don't lie. Marstons really really need to invest some money into this place. Fantastic location and staff but it's in no fit state to be open. No hot water in the toilets, lets hope thats not the case in the staff facilities. Questionable stains on seats, seats filthy and threadbare and ripped with sharp staples exposed some with wobbly legs, tables need re varnishing. dire state of disrepair and needs closing down for a spruce up. Hate to think what the kitchen facilities look like if this is how the front of house is. First visit in many many years whilst passing. Not how I remembered it in my childhood summers living local. shan't be returning any time soon.. really sad that the brewery has allowed it to get to this. On the plus side every member of staff i come across was really freindly including the passionate manager. The food was fantastic and no complaints on that side. I shall also be forwarding this review to marstons themselves to try help get some funding for this place before summer..

Sorry but definitely not going back again. For starters the staff weren’t engaging, no atmosphere, clientele left a lot to be desired. If I’m out for lunch with friends then to me, swearing is not on the menu, or screaming kids. Our table was in the middle of both. The food was just ok, nothing particularly stood out. Very mediocre. Wish we hadn’t bothered. When I told someone we were going there face said it all, they said it wasn’t somewhere they would go but of course we had booked and it was the same day we were going and thought it wasn’t fair to cancel last minute. So we tried it for ourselves. Should’ve listened and cancelled, I don’t think they would have noticed or cared. No one checked if everything was ok Yes we should have complained there and then but we are voting with our feet and purses.

I have been coming to the park for over 20 years with my dogs. Just found out about the new parking thing. I come every day and until yesterday I had not even noticed it. So now you have to go inside to register your car, even if you are only there with your dog. This is rediculous and others agree. Also your silly signs are wrong. I am disabled with a blue badge. According to your sign I get free parking as long as I park in designated areas??.. What rubbish, you do not have such areas and parking is free for everyone. This along makes your own signs total nonsense. You are chasing people away from the park and hence from your pub. What made you think this was a good idea?

Best Sunday Dinner I've had in ages, and they looked after us and the dogs. Put us and the Yorkies on a great table so they were safe. Thanks to the pink haired manager was a great experience

The food is amazing, the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming and the staff go above and beyond. Buy one get one free deal is very good and dogs are allowed in the premises, but all dogs are well behaved and you are almost unaware of them! Great for occasions but equally good for a relaxed family meal. Highly reccomend It!

Lovely location, especially after a country walk. A really nice view out over the country park and cricket ground. I would look forward to visiting again in the Summer and sitting outside. Lovely refreshing pints and bar snacks. A very kid and dog friendly pub. £15 for 2 pints and a packet of snacks. Menu looks exciting and well priced. Look forward to coming back for breaky.

Great food and service as always. Sat in a rather loud bar area with children running through and playing with the pool table though.

Fast service but felt a bit lost .. very pleasant staff but you have to go to them.. I don't think the QR code ordering helps that though so it's not their fault.

Staff were so welcoming & flexible. This place is the most dog friendly pub I have ever visited, with treats, water bowls, blankets & doggy menu available. The full breakfast was so good.

I think it was really disorganised, I think its wrong that you wasn't going to cater for all children's dietary needs, not all kids will eat a full English breakfast! I think the Santa was younger than myself! Oh and the food was cold. Will not be coming again

Gemma was a brilliant host. No one likes a big group but she was patient, helpful and incredibly willing to meet everyone’s needs and all with a smile!!! We were made properly welcome and had a lovely lunch!

My daughter and (now) son in law had their wedding reception here on saturday 14th dec 24, and i cannot praise the landlady and her staff enough, from meeting us at the entrance, to the buffet, which was plenty of choices and lots of, which covered for guests with dietery needs too to the very pleasant waiters /waitress comming around with the drinks for the toast, this was a very special and an emotional day for all and i can honestly say it was perfect from start to finish, and i believe this was the first wedding reception they had done well done to the landlady and her staff, a very big thank you 🤎🤎

Adult food was excellent on Sunday menu. Kids pizza was a little disappointing. We dropped in for a pint and chips on Saturday. Excellent cheese and chips. Great service.

Nice to sit out in the sun as a good-sized area with seating. Lots of hand pulled beers, good selection of spirits, and largers. Not had food so can't rate that one, staff always friendly, and nice atmosphere to boot thanks M&J
