Sea & Earth in Gedling

I sometimes find the staff unfriendly and I get the impression they aren't in support of veganism, rather they're just using it as a marketing ploy. It has changed a lot since it opened and I rarely visit now. A lot of the vegan offerings are now charged at a premium, which I don't support (though the lunch deals are still fair at the time of writing). I was a frequent visitor (in 2021 and 2022) but I think its fair to say often when I've gone, I've regretted it. *My Original Review, c2021. One in a hundred here. They DON'T take advantage of vegans. Same prices for vegan sausages, vish cakes and banana blossom. They say vegan items are cooked separately too. Sometimes chips are a bit undercooked but for the most part, they are good.

Absolutely awesome chippy with really amazing vegan options! We had the banana blossom fish, vishcake, chips and curry sauce and all were really fresh and delicious! Really kind, friendly and helpful service too, and the food was ready really quickly. Super reasonably priced too with generous portions, would 100% recommend!

After calling three times to inquire about the status of our order, we were frustrated that it had taken nearly two hours to receive our food. During the third call, we explained that if the food arrived cold, we would like a refund. The person on the phone shouted to a woman, who we assume was the manager, that we were requesting a refund. We overheard the woman in the background say that we would not be receiving a refund. With swearing added to that I would not order from here again the service shocking the food was not worth the money and with customer service we got I would not waste your money

Waited for 2 hours for the food to arrive. When ringing to ask where our order was and expressing our fears that we hope it doesn't arrive cold we could hear staff in the background swearing and shouting "they are not getting a xxxxxxx refund". When it did arrive the large cod were small (appauled by the size; had bigger mini fish on a kids meal). The food was stone cold. The chips were raw in places. How something can be raw, cold and so greasy is beyond me. Will definitely not order from here again and will be sure to tell all friends and family to avoid at all costs. Please do not waste your money.

It's great to have a chip shop offering an extensive and well though out vegan alternative menu. It's quite rare to come across this. Great service and food was served piping hot (the curry loaded chips with crispy kale + chilli were sensational).

Visited this wonderful chippy at lunchtime. Been 2/3 times on way home from work before so already know how delicious the chips are. Today had the lunchtime special. It was ABSOLUTELY delicious everything!!!!! The chips are like eating seaside chips in Notts. That grit and same flavour as the coast amazing!! Fish absolutely gorgeous pure white crispy good size haddock for the price. Peas gorgeous!! Best special for the money you could get. I was amazed at the amount of chips and size of fish for the price. The curry sauce is to die for. To be honest it give it SIX stars !!!! Yes had to wait a little while but I’ve still given 5 stars because it’s a busy place understandably the quality and value for money and girls worked efficiently and friendly. But can assure you WELL worth the wait!!Atmosphere buzzing. Cannot recommend this chippy highly enough. Best place I’ve ever been to and I’ve done a few over the years!!! The quality of the food the chef is delivering plus the friendly efficient service immaculate shop - keep up the excellent work guys. Can’t wait to come again THOROUGHLY OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really good to see a wide range of vegan options. This is a strong example to set to other similar restaurants - please don't lose these.

Some great deals on fish and chips

Have used Sea and Earth many times and the food has been excellent. Went today and the fish and sausage were up to their usual high standard (the batter is to die for) but the chips were inedible. Cold, hard and impossible to eat. It felt as if they had been standing for ages, and this was 6pm. I left 90% of them. I don't know what is happening but they need to sort it quick. There are too many chippies in the are for them to serve up bad food

Had the £4.95 special fish and chips with peas. Great service and a 5 minute wait. The fish was great, lots of chips and peas. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would thoroughly recommend, for a chippy tea. There is plenty of food for not a lot of money 👌

We travelled nearly 40 minutes to try the vegan banana blossom and it was well worth the trip! So impressed with the vegan options available and would rate our meal a solid 10/10. The staff were really friendly and everything was also very clean and tidy. We liked the clean cut sustainable vibe and that the packaging was biodegradable. We will definitely visit again! Thank you for a lovely meal and experience.

Lovely taste but the chips were not fresh and soft they were hard which was disappointing but everything else lovely;. I would order again but please can the chips be fresh.

Whilst it was only fish and chips, I have to say it was one of the best fish and chips. The fish especially was especially nice with a beautiful crispy batter.

Some chips were undercooked and hard in the middle. The curry sauce tasted like raw curry powder and sugar - I don’t understand why these places don’t just do the standard curry sauce, as it’s so disappointing when you have something that tastes so much worse. The ‘large’ fish was tiny - if it had been sold as ‘small’ it would have been alright, as it was nice. Overall disappointing and overpriced. There are much better chippies in the area.

This is a great chippy and has fantastic options for vegetarians. Fast service even when super busy on a Friday night. Highly recommend.

Great vegan non fish & chios absolutely lovely very tasty and well priced

I love your menu but pre ordered this evening and arrived 10 minutes before it was ready, the lady said oh it’s just being done now, was left waiting 15 more minutes. I was looking at the bag on the top going cold and thought who’s is that order going cold?? It was mine, then asked when I approached the counter oh are you still waiting??? stressful . :( So, I’ve ordered two Korean teller trays, it says on the menu Korean vegan chicken?? This dish does not contain this item and this isn’t the first time. Is the menu is incorrect or have you forgotten to add this item? The teller tray used to have a Korean sticky sauce it’s now curry sauce so what effectively I’ve had is chips with curry sauce and some chillies. I’d love someone to get touch to discuss as it’s really disappointing.

Great tasty 'artisan' food at bargain prices

Really nice chips and the deals are really good. The fish cake was delicious, the best chips we’ve had in a while. The staff were really nice too.

Been a few times and was great .. went tonight and SHOCKING. Chicken pie didn't look cooked was red inside hardly any chicken . Customer service shocking. Manager ( alex) shocking no customer service skills at all. Totally gone down hill since been full of kids serving... not going back . Even chips are not great

Always use this place, and we always enjoyed our fish and chips, we ordered a large cod and chips and a regular sized cod and chips, when we got in our vehicle I handed my wife the large fish & chips that was mine as it was that tiny I thought it was the smaller of the two. And her regular fish & chips was pathetically small. Shame it's run itself down, as I wouldnt return. I would rather travel further and get quality fish & chips from bestwood fisheries or Rolleston fish bar.

Always amazing food and service

So looking forward to F&C at Sea & Earth after a busy busy day. Never been disappointed before but today was really not good. Cold old chips, cold peas fish just OK..hope this is a one off because it’s usually really good.

Picked up an order on behalf of Steve Leek yesterday at 6:30. Food was fantastic, fish was full of flavor, the chips were just the right blend of soft but not too mushy. Service was great too.

The food from here is amazing, unfortunately the loud mouthed lady with the reddish hair let's this place down shouting at the customers for their orders, no manners and moaning at customers she clearly knows that it is too busy and can't understand why... if you can't handle the pace love then you need to look a different career and my advice would be that it is not I customer service!! The other lady serving bless her tried to diffuse the loud mouth lady's attitude by smiling at all the customers ... clearly she felt awkward!!

As a self confessed “chip snob” I’ve tried most chip shops in the area…Sea & Earth have cracked it. Good food freshly cooked, quality ingredients and friendly staff at a reasonable price. Not as cheap as some (but you get what you pay for) but is a not gimmicky and serves portions that don’t leave you hungry (not generate for waste). Try it, it won’t disappoint.

Vegan fish was a shockingly small portion for a tenner. And to top it off it was HORRID. I had to spit it out and bin it. Bleargh!! Rang them up to confirm portion size because I thought I'd been short changed but apparently two chicken gujon sizes is worth a tenner. Won't be ordering again 🙃

Apparently these are 2 LARGE cod and medium chips. Now unless the cod has been mistaken for a sardine which it then would be large. That has never in a million years been a large cod. It’s the same size as my fork! And as for a medium chips there’s about 20. Imagine if I’d of got a small chips I may of received about 5. So yeah don’t get a LARGE fish and chips from here or it will set you back £14+ for what in reality is a battered sardine and one potato! Shocking

Ordered a large cod, medium chips & curry sauce. The term “large” should be standardised because to describe the fish I had delivered as “large” is laughable, regular would be generous & I’d love to see the small. The curry sauce was sweet & bland. Chips were nice. Wouldn’t recommend & won’t be returning.

Omg I could have travelled the earth the length of time it took me to get my order. Pie chips and gravy. 20mins waiting then told sorry we have no pies! So I change the order and it takes another 20 minutes to get that done.

I can't really comment on atmosphere as I ordered for delivery but the food was absolutely AMAZING! Everything was hot and tasty and you could also tell everything was fresh. I'm not really a chip shop fan but I'll definitely be going back. And the price for how much food we got was also really good!! Will definitely be recommending to friends and family. Oh also THE MUSHY PEAS are absolutely DEVINE!!!

After previously rating this venue 5 stars, my recent experience is contrary to this. While I don’t buy the banana blossom fish as I’m not a fan, the vegan scampi and vegan fish cake remained good. The chips, however, were a serious disappointment due to being drenched in oil. It was sickly, and we couldn’t eat them. It actually upset my partner’s stomach. We also found the service extremely rude. On calling to order food, the server kept impulsively putting the phone down and telling us to hold on numerous times. We had to keep on repeating our order and were shown no courtesy. Then upon collecting the food, we also found him very rude in person. While he did seem busy, it’s no excuse to treat paying customers dismissively. As we have previously enjoyed this takeaway, we hope that the oily chips and poor service was a one off.

always go to sea and earth but can’t help but notice how small fish and chip portions are recently! The fish looks and taste like frozen Birds Eye fish doesn’t even resemble a real fish! Such a shame as they was always big and tasty.

Was really looking forward to ordering from here seeing as we are about 8 months pescatarian. Literally tried 1 of everything off of the vegan menu (about 6 weeks ago) so that we can see what’s best to order moving forward. Chips were good but a little underdone for my liking. The biggest downside was how greasy everything was. The mushy pea fritters were probably my favourite as seemed the least greasy but everything else was too much batter & grease. Might come back in the future but probably not that often if at all. A shame as we’re only a 5 minute drive away. Would be lovely if you could make your fishcakes un-battered and more crumbled like a normal fishcake

We are visiting friends and wanted a good chippy. Just been here. WOW. The food is amazing. The staff were lovely. We had the meal deals. For 4 people it was £21. Would recommend this chippy to anybody. Next time we visit we will order from here again.

Nice fish , chips not to my daughters liking overall an okay meal

I don’t like leaving negative reviews but feel this is warranted. I’ve had meals from Sea and Earth a few times now and usually they’ve been ok but never have I been as dissapointed as I was last Friday and I have sent an email to them but 5 days on I’ve still had no response. I placed my order online to collect at 6.40pm which I did. I got home ( a good 10 min drive) to discover the chicken nuggets were missing. Don’t know how these were missed when there was only 3 meals ordered. Anyway I rang at 18.56pm to be told I had 2 options, to come back and collect (over a 20 min round trip drive) or have them added to my next order (so my kids wouldn’t eat tonight then?). I returned at approx 19.09pm to be told I had to wait for them to be cooked even though I rang 13 mins earlier?? I eventually got my nuggets with a small portion of free chips at 19.17pm (over 20 mins since I first rang). Not only is this disgusting as I shouldn’t of had to wait as my other food was going cold, but by the time I got home my original order (which included 2 portions of fish) had been sat in a box for 50+ minutes and was luke warm at best and unedable. Offering someone a free small portion of chips as compensation isnt good enough and I wish I’d returned the lot and obviously you were far to busy to provide a good service and they really couldn’t have cared less!! Shame on you Sea & Earth!!!

Ordered on Uber Eats. I had the banana blossom fish with a medium chips and curry sauce. All were delivered piping hot and in great condition. The curry sauce was so delicious and the perfect accompaniment for the lush chips. Banana blossom was unlike any way I've had it before and it was so good! Lovely crispy batter and soft, fishy texture inside. Fantastic vegan options on offer and really feels like they care about offering proper good alternatives!

Friendly staff. They are extremely busy because the food is good but I would say an average waiting time for freshly cooked food. The queueing system is a little confusing. Minor mistakes have been made on two of the many visits we have made but apologies are profuse and sincere. Generous portions.

Had Fish Chips and Mushy peas for the second time and they were fantastic. Best Chip shop around, The batter is absolutely gorgeous not like other chip shops where you have to throw half the batter away because it's to thick. Will definitely be back for more. UPDATE TO MY EARLIER REVIEW.............Since my last review I have been back many times and have never been let down by the staff or the food, absolutely first class, in fact a couple of weeks ago I was on holiday in Padstow and tried some Rick Steins fish and chips and they were abysmal and cost a fortune. I suggest Mr Stein come up to Sea and Earth to see how its done. Well Done guy's keep up the good work. NEW UPDATE AS 11/07/2023 Had fish chips and scampi today and would like to amend from the best in the area to must be THE BEST in the country, the chips today was outstanding.....Well Done.

I did originally give a bad review over a year ago because my child went in and ordered vegan food for us all when going into the chip shop and it wasn’t vegan, however!, after a while, I have ordered repeatedly online and never had the same mistake. I’m glad I went back, the vegan food is very good, plenty of choice and I highly recommended going. It’s so nice having a chip shop nearby that does amazing vegan food! 😍

Excellent fish and chips, vegan selection as well

The best fish and chips I’ve had so far in Nottingham. I ordered the small cod with chips & a side of chips and curry sauce. The potion was huge. The fish was crispy, fresh and not oily at all. Chips were great and the chunky tartare was also amazing. Ps. It was takeaway and still did not get cold or soggy.

I went here with my family after visiting Nottingham Haunted museum. I'll start with all the positives, very clean and tidy, excellent customer service, and friendly and helpful staff. The vegan menu is vast, pretty much the same length as the none vegan menu. Chip portions are plentiful, the banana bloom was lovely and well covered, but a tad small, the banana blossom portion would benefit from being slightly larger. The negative points, they had run out of T cakes.

Fish and chips was OK. The fish was full of bones. It was Cod. Be careful, Not impressed. Big disappointmen! Chips & mushy peas were good. But unfortunately, the fish was no good. Not happy as I thought the shop is presented well. Hugely disappointed.

Was very disappointed, ordered off deliveroo and the coke came warm, sent us gravy instead of curry, then the chips came with no salt and vinegar. Which was a shame as the chips had potential, but the fish was ok. However, I would like to go in to try as I feel like it would be better! Just got a poor delivery

First and last time at Sea & Earth. The banana blossom fish was greasy and unpleasant and tasted nothing like fish. The chips were mushy and slightly undercooked. The nicest thing was the vegan battered sausage, but again it was very greasy. Added to this it was really expensive considering I can buy the same for half the price from the freezer at Aldi without it being greasy. 😔

During my guest's first visit to the UK, we were craving the famous Fish and Chips. Despite arriving late, we decided to give Sea and Earth a try, drawn in by its captivating name and vibrant shop colors. As luck would have it, when we arrived, the shop was just about to close, and the staff was diligently engaged in thorough cleaning. We felt a pang of disappointment, thinking we might have to settle for pizza, not wanting to be the worst customers ever. 😂 However, the friendly gentleman at the till had other plans. He refused to let us leave empty-handed, even though we declined the options that were readily available. His kindness and reassurance went above and beyond, making us feel genuinely welcome. He took our order and fried up two generous portions of mouthwatering fish and chips. To our delight, he packed them with an array of amazing sauces and wished us a fantastic evening. In that moment, we found our new favorite Fish and Chips shop in the city. Sea and Earth won us over with their exceptional service and delicious food.
