Ace pub, the best staff and great beer. This pub has a good range of Castle Rock and other beers. The food is good, meat, veggie and vegan. It is very well managed and efficient. Nice atmosphere. Feels like home everytime.

Excellent boozer with lots of decent cask and craft beers at reasonable prices. Only downside is it's full of bloody dogs - either barking, fighting or lying where you have to step over them! I like dogs, but.... Great for the ale, though!

Odd place. They obviously like beer so the choice isn't bad, whether it's cask or keg or even cans but the welcome you get is never short of flat. I've loved in Notts for around 2-3 years and throughout that time, I keep trying to venture out to these guys to give them my business but each and every time, it's painful; and it's literally EVERY TIME... The staff (most, not all) are awful and I honestly don't think they even realise it. Genuinely, I'd rather a friendly face that's awful at pouring beer than a place that has a decent line up but grumpy faces behind the bar. I love craft beer and I'm forgiving in character but I think the only reason this place is still going is...where else do you go within the vicinity or maybe they do good food??

Went for Sunday lunch after seeing recommendations for the vegan roast. Was very disappointed, the yorkshire pudding was more like a bread roll, the veg tasted like cheap frozen. The potatoes were the worst part, barely roasted and not had not been quality checked, full of black bits. The seitan just tasted of tomato. My friends meat roast was a bit better but not by much.

Used to rate this pub but it’s definitely gone downhill. The atmosphere hasn’t really changed, very cosy with a good number of locals and very dog friendly which in my opinion is a bonus. The staff are still pretty friendly with the exception of the manager (Lee, I think). He is grumpy and should not have a customer facing job. Whoever gave him this post made a big mistake and should really reconsider their hiring process. Unfortunately the food isn’t up to par with what it was before - dough isn’t as fresh for the pizzas, the chips are floury. The curry on Mondays however is still phenomenally good. The beer is kept well but some of the staff don’t know how to pour a pint properly it seems. The coffee is good but again some staff don’t seem to know how to froth milk without burning it. In essence it’s a mixed bag and you never know what quality you’ll get (bar curries on Monday).

Have been going to the B&B for many years, and so it seemed like the perfect place to meet up with a friend and his girlfriend who were down from Leeds, especially as they had bought their dog with them. It was a Saturday night so relatively busy. The evening started badly because the girl serving behind the bar looked like she'd been sucking lemons, and clearly didn't want to be there. I'd never seen her there before so can only assume she is new, also young so maybe her first job. Whatever the reason, her attitude wasn't appreciated... She seemed particularly peeved that I wanted to use my loyalty card. Anyway, this is not a criticism of the ale because, as always, it was excellent. This is instead about the dreadful food which we received. I had a chicken Caesar pizza... it came with an over cooked base whose crust I struggled to even cut through and pieces of chicken that were so dry and tasteless that I struggled to differentiate them from the croutons which were also sprinkled on top. They could have taken a ceiling tile and put toppings on and it would have likely tasted better. My wife unfortunately did not fair much better... She had opted for the homemade nachos. Now if you're going to boast about something being homemade you'd better make sure it's good. The nachos themselves were awful and devoid of taste. It was clear they'd been made out of nothing more than flour and water, and tasted beyond bland. Proper nachos are made with corn tortilla chips, not some cheap imitation knocked up with flour. So given the service received and the food provided, I'd say the evening was a resounding failure. Now I feel it only fair to point out that this is the first time I've had this sort of experience there, which is probably why it came as such a shock, and I should really have complained at the time, but when you're out with visitors it's not something you really want to do.

The quality of the beer is why we travel 30 minutes to get to this pub. We are also enjoying the Castle Rock App but have had a few issues when ordering when the App does not allow us to check in. We were trying to get some assistance with this App from the bar staff, it was early Friday evening and it was not particularly busy for the number of staff on shift. I can only say that the young man we spoke to (James) was not only dismissive but just plain rude, 'stop bothering me, it's nothing to do with me'! I appreciate this was an App issue but the lady we spoke to next took the time to explain what the problem was. Might the rude response have something to do with the shots the chaps behind the bar were knocking back?

A lovely lig fire burning as well arrived Kate afternoon made it feel cosy from the start. A charming lady behind the bar made us welcome and had a nice natter with us about times past for the pub and what it's like now. Drinks swiftly served and as driving a very nice cola for myself but my wife enjoyed her glass of Merlot very much. Fish, chips and crushed peas for me with a pot of tarter sauce and grilled wedges of lemon. The fish was fresh and succulent then chips crisps outside and soft inside so what's not to like, well only my choice, but I do like mushy peas, but the crushed garden peas were nice. Mrs C opting for the pan roasted sea bass with ratatouille and tomato sauce. For dessert we had the Black Forest Waffle and the Sticky Toffee pudding. Both were excellent and a step above the average. Please keep it up and we will be back.
