The Burj in Swindon

Came here for birthday meal and told table we booked wasn’t available. So rude & 0 apology just the most awful service. Won’t be returning.

Fantastic food and service, large group of us and the service was great, plenty of drinks and food to go round! Highly recommend and we will be back again soon.

Evening booking for 9 at 7.30, car park full up. Seated on time. The place was packed out. Starters came out in good time...mains however came out just before 10pm!!! Not acceptable. The Burj either has too many covers or not enough cooking capacity. The food however was excellent. They even replaced a guests meal FOC because the first one was made too hot.

Very attentive staff and fantastic food. Easily the best Indian food I’ve had in or around Swindon. Will definitely be going back and would highly recommend to anyone thinking of going to The Burj

We arrived soaked to the skin after a very wet walk and we're met with nothing but kindness. We were even given linen to dry ourselves on. We had a delicious lunch of vegetarian side dishes and continued along the Ridgeway feeling a lot happier.

Such a shame that the good food is let down by very poor service and customer care. I made an online reservation on 24th June for a table for four people to dine on Saturday 17th August. This was a special event for us and our guests were travelling from Yorkshire to join us. the Burj sent me a confirmation of my table reservation, by email, on 24th June. We arrived at the restaurant in good time for our booking, only to find a full restaurant. The head waiter met us and took some time to go through the motions of searching for a table. After a few minutes he told us to sit in the bar area while he found our table. This was a charade as there were no free tables. He eventually returned and , after opening up the empty annexe room used for private parties, told us we could go in there. I politely challenged and asked about our booking and explained that this was made 2 months prior and that I had written confirmation. he was not interested and responded that it was a Saturday and they were busy. I countered with that's why i booked so far ahead. I asked why he hadn't put a reserved sign on a table for us, in much the same way that most other establishments would do. He wasn't interested and just said we'd have to wait. His attitude made us feel that we were in the wrong and he was doing us a favour by allowing us into the restaurant. When we were eventually shown to a table , after waiting over 30 minutes, the service we received was sporadic at best. Starters were delivered with 5/10 minute gaps between dishes and the same with main courses. It appears that the food quality remains as good as ever, but the management and service are very poor. We are regular visitors to the Burj, but it may be time to explore different restaurants. I would warn potential guests who have made an online reservation not to rely on the booking and to expect poor service.

Tired interior, staff that didn't understand what we were ordering and very over cooked lamb and chicken, won't be returning

After a previous poor experience of having a take away meal delivered (so late that I refused to accept the food having given up and made ourselves a meal) we thought that collecting the take away ourselves would be a better bet. How wrong could we be! We ordered and paid for the meal online, about an hour and a half before requested pick up time and arrived exactly at that time to pick it up. After numerous queries while waiting, and being assured that the food “is just coming” or “just a few minutes” I eventually left with the meal 35 minutes later. This will be the last time I give this restaurant any business.

My husband managed to reserve a table for the Evening on Valentine's Day. We are returning customers and again the 4 of us were not disappointed as this restaurant serves amazing Indian cuisine.. Going on another customers recommendation, we tried the Non - veg and Veg platter starters in the photo below and they were delicious. From the Burj house speciality menu we also highly recommend the Lamb Rara. This establishment is 5 star and we definitely recommend.

Having looked at other reviews I feel less inhibited about writing this review: I don't like being critical but enough is enough. Many of the curries at this restaurant, whether take away or eaten in, taste like tomato soup. The Chicken Tikka tastes like tomato soup, the Butter Chicken might as well be tomato soup - it's truly disappointing to receive a meal that is so underwhelming. The chicken, as another review has said, is presented in huge chewy chunks. The mushroom rice is nothing like mushroom rice. The Goan chicken curry is like Chicken Makani - sugary, sickly coconut curry. This underwhelming, disappointing experience has happened the last three times we have bought a takeaway from the Burj, and indeed, eaten in. What has happened to this fantastic restaurant? My son-in-law sat in not long ago and had his favourite chilli and garlic chicken curry. It had no spice. A few months ago I ordered the chilli and garlic calamari - I received tasteless rubber squid in what was more a tomato puree with a hint of garlic and not a patch on the same dish I had at West Overton last year. What on earth is going on management???

Only marked one star so I could leave a review!!! Friends had booked a table for 7:30pm on Saturday 17th February. On arrival we were informed that there would be a wait. Eventually got served at the bar for drinks the told at 8:00pm table was ready after our friends having again asked at 7;45pm if our table was ready. The table was obviously for two people but set for four people 😡 absolute joke no way would you have gotten all the plates & dishes on there for the number of guests ended up leaving & getting a takeaway from another establishment. Over booked & also taking walk ins. Absolute shambles & a rude manager to boot.

Pre booked for 7.30 for 4 people . Arrive 7 26pm table not available and asked to order drinks and wait. 7.45pm still no table and queried wait time. No clear answer just asked to wait. 8pm was asked to follow to available table. It was apparent the table was for 2 people and not 4., So this was our cue to leave. So definitely not impressed with our first and LAST visit to the Burj. Cannot comment on food as didn’t get the opportunity to try it . But customer service was definitely a very definite zero out of 100

Went for dinner for the first time in a long time here this evening. The restaurant was rammed and staff running around madly trying to cope. We had booked but had to wait a long time to tell anyone that we had. Booked for 8pm and didn't get a table until nearly 8.30. Felt sorry for the people eating at the tables by the door as they had people constantly around them while waiting for a table to free up. Once seated it was another 10 minutes to be asked if we wanted drinks and and nearly an hour before we had our food order taken. Apologies were given for the wait when the order was taken. When the food eventually arrived, and it did take nearly and hour the dish I had ordered was not correct. I questioned what it was as it was very coconut in flavour and I can't eat coconut but was told it was the correct dish. It's a dish I had had there before and it was completely different but got told it was Chicken Chetinad when I questioned it again and that it did have coconut in it. The menu does not state any coconut and it has never had coconut in it before so I know it was not the correct dish. I was allowed to choose another dish but no apology was given and I then had to wait for it to arrive. My son had Chicken Tika Massala and the sauce tasted like tomato soup. My husband's dish was very nice and so was my replacement dish. Best onion Baji we have had and lovely Bombay potato. Unfortunately, the Rice and Nan bread arrived 15 minutes after the curry and after being chased several times. No apology for the delay. Such a shame as it has always been very good on previous visits and the lack of apologies at the time when there were issues or when we were paying just made us feel like there was no real care for the customers. We will not go back at a weekend.

We have been ordering a Take Away from the Burg in Wanborough for a few years and we always have the same dish , Garlic Chilli Chicken . The meal is definitely the best curry I have had in Swindon . Unfortunately last night when my husband returned there was only 1 sauce in separate containers as we always have one each . I called the restaurant to explain what had happened and could I get a 10% discount next time . He told me they were both in the same tub but they weren’t. He then proceeded to say that it’s free so no discount. Well that’s the 1st time I have ever heard that . He was quite rude as if so what . I won’t be recommending this place to anyone else . First visit to restaurant. Great atmosphere and clean. Not liking a hot curry I ordered a biriyani as it has no chilli beside it on the menu. I couldn't eat it, it was so hot and my son was worried as I was going extremely red in the face. I called the staff over and told them and was told that was how it was served in India. I drew their attention to the no chilli symbol. I received another plate of food and that was still hot spicy. I note another review also draws attention to the biriyani being spicy hot.

Roy and his brilliant team catered for our wedding. We couldn’t have asked for more. The attention to detail and the amazing service was exceptional. Can’t recommend them highly enough

The chicken was awful!! 3 out of 4 curries all with the same hard and chewy chicken! They did offer to replace the meals but by this time we had lost all faith in the food!

The food and service were fantastic. The atmosphere was nice, busy and lively. We had many things but the Burj special meat platter to start was incredibly good. Parking lot was completely full which says it all - 10/10 would recommend. Also get the mango kulfi to finish, really great meal

Popped in at 9pm on the off chance that they'd have a table for 4 of us, as we were out celebrating my birthday. Front of house staff were very friendly, accomodating and we were shown to a table straight away.. Considering the restaurant was very busy, our drinks and starters were ordered immediately and delivered promptly. All 4 main dishes and sides were absolutely delicious. We highly recommend the Burj and we will definitely be back.

Portion sizes reduced and quality not what it was...its still good but not very good. Service awful. Very, very slow. Waiter was surly throughout. Expected us to clear the table for him, rather than walking around to collect plates. Wont be back in a hurry.

I've been coming to the Burj infrequently for years, food has always been good. Is it outstanding like some reviews state? Not sure as personally don't eat at many other Indian restaurants but it is definitley good. Very disappointed to come here on a Friday night which is obviously busy, we were sat waiting 2 hours for our food. Repeatedly asked the waiters what the hold up was to be told it was due to the high volume of Take-away orders. Seems ridiculous to prioritise the take-away orders above customers sat in the restaurant but apparently this is the norm.....

Second visit and wasn't disappointed, best in the area, different menu form other 'Indian' places, reasonable price and really friendly staff, will be going again, soon!! Julie

My good friend snd l went to The Burj on Friday evening. We had a delicious meal. We ordered s good few dishes from starters to mains. They were all so good. I have been a few times but this was certainly the best. We had the poppadoms and chutneys. Then ordered starters. Had s break and ordered mains. So no rush. All the food came out looking pretty especially the starters. Very very fresh and wonderful hot plates. Makes all the difference. I shall be back very soon.

Even though we had booked a table, we were offered a table in the bar area where people collect their takeaway meals. We declined and then were given a table in the main restaurant. The menus on the table were paper menus with food stains on them and we had to ask for the menus in the book format. We ordered our starters. The spicy poppadoms were far too hot to be enjoyable. However the onion bhajis were great. None of us like spicy hot food so we ordered food that didn't have the chilli pepper sign against them. It was also made clear to the waiter that we had an intolerance to spicy hot food. However, even the biryani was overly hot! On the plus side, the waiting staff were very friendly and attentive and the food presentation was excellent. The service charge is included.

The food and service was good. However, very pricey for what it is, and that’s before considering the unexpected £20 gratuity fee that appeared on the bill, which always leaves a sour taste at the end of an otherwise nice evening.

Had to drive to the restaurant, very rude, bar full of people drinking but not eating is that even allowed unset acid restrictions. Denied a refund...told me to contact Just Eat even though I ordered directly through them, told us it's not their problem. Finally agreed to a refund shocking service. 1 star is being generous over priced average food.

We've been before and this time mixed and matched with some old favourites and a couple of new dishes. There is an option to choose a meat (went for lamb) and then briefly explain preferences (dry and spicy) and let them show their ability. Very glad we did, it was excellent

First meal out with friends following months in lockdown and came away feeling quite angry. We ordered drinks and were given menus. Within 5 minutes we were asked if we were ready to order, we asked for a few minutes to look at menu only to be badgered by another waiter to order. The whole evening we felt rushed and the waiters hovering around the table was very annoying. I had to stop the waiter removing my glass of wine that I hadn't finished! The table was cleared and we were made to feel it was time to leave with one waiter tapping his fingers on the counter. As we walked out of the restaurant all the lights were switched off leaving us in the dark to find our way to our cars, not easy! Very disappointed

I was cycling the King Alfred's Way on the Ridgeway, and struggling to find anywhere on that route to buy food for lunch. I saw this restaurant and that it had picnic tables outside. I asked if I could sit outside and order some food, making it clear it would just be starters, and they said yes. So I say I at the table with my bike leaned you against it and had poppadoms with the best dips I've ever had, best onion bhajis I've ever had and I great mixed starter. High quality, good humoured staff and accommodating of my strange scenario.

I'm afraid it has to be one star because of the appallingly slow service. It took 2hrs for our main courses to arrive, we were actually on the point of leaving. The only recompense offered was a drink on the house. It's a shame because the food was good, but cannot recommend the restaurant.

The food at this restaurant is excellent, it is really expensive , but you do get what you pay for. We were in a part of 2 and when the bill came it already included a suggest gratuity of 10%.. don't get me wrong, I always tip, but I do think it's out of order to assume that everyone should tip but adding it to the bill you have to ask them to remove it, which is obviously quite embarrassing for the customerPlease re-think this and give people the option at the end!

Called in late after leaving another restaurant due to poor service , the team couldn’t do more for us . Super table , quick and friendly service and a super meal . Highly recommended. Thank you your team are brilliant.

We have visited 5/6 times and always had a wonderful time. Booked tonight as a bank holiday meal out and have left very disappointed. One of the main meals did not arrive, we asked twice only to be told ‘3 mins’ then 10 minutes later the wrong main came. We had our main meals cleared and were left waiting (we were going to order coffee and some drinks). We then had to argue to have the wrong main removed. We then had to wait to pay. Very disappointed. The food was lovely but to wait and then be lied to is not what we expect from a place we have enjoyed previously.

I've been to the burj on many occasions in the pre covid and have advocated it's superb take on indian/ British Indian food time and time again.Sadly however the service fell short of the mark on this occasion.Having failed to bring the chota duck I ordered with the rest if the meal this was politely raised with the waiter. A few minutes passed and again raised to a different waiter.Finally a third time we asked to which they inquired what was missing, they go away and say it'll be a few minutes more because it takes longer to cook (obviously a lie). Finally 10 minutes later the waiter brings out a dish, the lamb and duck special - we pointed out this was wrong. To cut a long story short they refused to admit a mistake had been made in that it wasn't cooked with the order and they eventually brought the wrong duck dish.A simple apology is all that was needed - mistakes happen. Instead a meal out with the family sadly had a black mark upon it as a result. In the end they repented and comped the main but still the service was not what I would expect from a highstreet indian - let alone a mid to high end restaurant.Unfortunate, I may return for the food but I would hope the service goes back to previously excellent levels.

Lovely food if we ate it all - no social distance at all people stumbling on our table complained to manager - he said we dont encourage people like that but he added 2 extra tables to theres blocking us in - happy to take our full money

This was our first visit to the Burj after being recommended a few times. The service was friendly and efficient. The was awesome. Will definitely be visiting again.

Booked for a family meal ,place was packed with no social distancing at all ,took our order ,the meal was so rushed they completely forgot the starters and bought the mains in about 5 minutes .the mains where good but felt under pressure to eat up and go .then gets the bill to find theres a service charge in the bill ,dont think I will be going back for while .greedy people ..

We ate here with friends a few weeks ago and it was lovely.. food was very good and good value. Last night we went for a takeaway (due to current situation) and would definitely recommend it ...
