The Bull's Head Inn in Staffordshire Moorlands

Apparently this place has changed hands a few times recently, which explains the historical high rating. We remember a better menu from a couple of years ago and enjoy our visit then. We expected the same place but sadly were disappointed. While the place was just as pretty, and the services was decent (although they did nothing when they saw we had eaten half our food), the meal itself was terrible. We won’t return.

Booked a table for 12:15. Arrived and the place looked shut, both doors shut and front door locked. The chairs were still on the tables from the night before. Greeted (if you can call it that) by a rather unwelcoming member of staff, who looked like she’d rather be anywhere else and then proceeded to complete doing her make up in the back of the bar rather than giving us menus. The tables were filthy, the floors had not been swept from the night before and the couches covered in dog hair. It had a smell in the air of wet dog and chip fat and the bar area was dark, and uninviting. The whole time we were there they didn’t put any music on in the background which meant we could hear the cross words had between the staff (awkward to say the least). The waitress did warm up as time went on and was a little more friendly to the few diners that arrived after us. Considering we booked a table for the restaurant area that’s where we should have been seated. Food was average and not worth the price, as there was no music we could hear the microwave for the lasagne. I don’t normally write reviews however I feel the need as hopefully the establishment will reflect and improve for others, especially when the website etc make it look so appealing. People parting with their hard earned money during these times deserve better.

Visited whilst on holiday in Alton, which we visit every year, the bar lady was less than welcoming. We felt a burden to her. The place is now cold and lacks any love. We used to love it here when visiting the area. We ate there despite the initial welcome. The food was also a lot to be desired. Dirty menus & cutlery.

We visited this hotel on a trip to alton towers. It’s only a few minutes drive from there. We drove past it without noticing it at first but so glad we found it. The character of the place is fab. Really well decorated, I’m told there is a function room which I bet looks amazing is the rest of the place is anything to go by. The staff were really friendly, welcoming and attentive. We weren’t waiting long at all to order or for our food which is always a blessing with 2 little ones in tow. The food was amazing and compared to the prices we’d seen on line for the Alton towers hotel meals was very well priced. If we were in the area again we would definitely return and 💯 recommend!

Arrived to be informed multiple items on the menu were not available. Ordered food and was advised there were no peas so offered carrots as an alternative (after suggesting many other items which weren’t in stock either). 45 minutes later we were then advised carrots weren’t available either. Waited over an hour for food with no one coming to the table during this time. Had to find someone to order olives as the children were hungry. Don’t have the ‘kebab’ £15 for a couple of pieces of chicken Schawarma and fries. The meal is advertised as coming with Slaw and salad - none of this arrived, assume these were other items not in stock. Only reasons given from the pub were they had a big table in and no delivery until tomorrow. No compensation offered - birthday experience ruined, really poor!

Popped in unplanned for a quick Gamio lunch. Great pint of Guinness. Would loved to have had a few more. Food was great. We had a mix. Pizza, Fish and Chips and a salad. All were very good. Service was friendly and quick. Lovely spot too. Cosy and comfortable.

We were staying at Alton Towers and were appalled at their buffet price and food quality (£80.30 for their buffet for 2 adults and 2 young kids…who eat about 3 mouthfuls of food normally for one evening visit), so decided to support a local pub/restaurant for our second night. Visited here after googling local pubs and were delighted with our visit. Friendliness of staff and food quality/portions/value for money/hygiene…everything was excellent. Lovely welcome from the lady on the bar, good friendly banter (although you must spend more time in inverness next visit to scotland!) and the waiter too. Fab. Couldn’t ask for more…and I’m v fussy!🤦‍♀️. 10/10. (And just an observation but that evening I saw 3 other tables at the pub/restaurant eating here and like us staying at Alton towers ….says a lot).

Went with a large group for my mums birthday and it couldn’t have been better. Rhys and the staff were extremely accommodating and flexible with our booking. They also provided vegan options on request to make sure everyone in the group had a great evening. We even had our own room with our choice of music. Couldn’t have asked for a better evening thank you to the staff for being so friendly and making the whole evening really special. Will be back in a heartbeat!

We had been going to the Bulls Head when we visited Alton Towers over the last 20 years, first visit since reopening. Food so disappointing, food cold and a kebab with undercooked chicken, leeks and carrots !! If you want a coffee it will be from a Tassimo. Unfortunately on our next visit it will be for a drink only.

Lovely friendly staff, food was amazing and the bed rooms were beautiful. The rooms were just across the road . Only downside was the stairs were quite steep to the rooms. Well worth the climb though.

How this place has got 4.5 stars, we really don’t know. A lovely quaint pub, but that’s where it stops. It’s freezing, although had a nice log fire….. which had gone out. The staff were obviously looking to finish as it was getting late at 8.30 pm, so why bother keeping a lovely fire in. A starter of cheese nachos put in front of us to share. Guess we will be eating with our hands then!! No sharing plates, cutlery or napkins, just a load of sour cream, guacamole and salsa sauce spewed from cheap plastic bottles as opposed to something fresh. We opted for a rump steak kebab and small fish and chips. The kebab came with 2 thirds of the plate covered in chips and no cutlery. I eventually managed to get a knife and fork. I counted 3000 chips and gave up. The tiny bit of salad was saturated in some kind of salad dressing. I asked for more salad and was obliged, again saturated in dressing, like I’m incapable of putting my own on. My wife’s fish and chips was at best mediocre. On a positive, the beer was reasonable. Toilets were clean but half finished with sealants half done all over the place. Pretty much sums up the whole place, slapdash, with plenty of corners cut. Guessing the place just relies on those that visit the towers, as I can’t see many of the locals would set foot into place. Very dissatisfied and disappointed. Goes to show you can’t always trust a review.

As we walked in, greeted with smiles and asking how we are. Such a warm welcome. No tables available as was fully booked. But let us have a table near the bar so we could eat. We had the chicken kebabs and really enjoyed them, lovely sticky toffee pudding to finish. Decent choice of booze and great friendly service throughout. Both the lady and gent working this eve were fantastic.

Had a bigger expectation about food/atmosphere and it all was just ok. Booked table few days before and on arrival they said that we are in booked for Saturday rather then Friday night. Error thats easily done either by us/or staff that took the booking. To their credit this wasn't an issue and we were offered table promptly near fire place which was very welcomed as it was very cold. Lovely 2 x guys that served us, they were very polite. Unfortunately no pizza was served😐 nevertheless we ordered chicken and rump steak kebabs and they were just ok. Massive portion that consisted of chips mainly bit nice slaw nad salad. Strong cinnamon seasoning which can be nice however it was all you can taste towards the end of the meal. Had glass of Malbeck that smelled and tasted off, this was exchanged for a glass from "new bottle" that tasted the same. But that just might be not very nice Malbeck that they sell. Kids meals were good, puddings were good. No ketchup in bottle but little sachets instead which is just very basic/buffet style.Overall, just average meal that was not your "average" price. £80 per 2 x adult and 2 x kids

Have to change our previous review. New owners have changed the menu so it's mainly pizza. Fine I guess each person wants to do there own thing - disappointing as the previous menu was so good! First issue was the restaurant was freezing. We asked about heating/fire but we're told it's an old building so they can't get it to warm up. Strange as we've been coming here years and never had this issue before. Second issue was they aren't actually doing pizzas...wouldn't say how long it had been a problem but judging by another review I read it has been at least a week. Third issue was the quality of the food, and the managers attitude to us complaining. Our home cooked pies with hand cut chips were obviously microwaved and the chips were of the packet frozen variety. The kids food was very overcooked and cold but just about edible but the pies weren't. They didn't charge us foe the inedible pies we sent back and they didn't charge us for a coke and a larger which is the only reason they didn't get a 1 star. Such a shame as this used to be such a great place and to be fair the pizza looked like it would have been nice.

Our evening got off to bad start when we were seated in a very cold dining room on a chilly October night and were told they couldn't heat it as they had run out of fire wood. Then once seated we were told they had no pizzas available, which made up a large portion of the menu. The evening continued with service issues - one of our starters never turned up, we asked for a second round of drinks, which also never turned up and the Bolognese, was a bowl of congealed, inedible, over cooked pasta with some sauce poured over the top. My husband opted for the Lasagne and Garlic Bread and when he thought the bread tasted funny, he turned it over and it was covered in green mould and I don't just mean a couple of small spots, I mean absolutely covered. It was the most disgusting thing any of us had ever seen in a restaurant, we were shocked. I don't believe anyone in that kitchen could have taken that bread out of its packaging (or storage container) cooked it and plated it without noticing that it was completed covered in mould. Needless to say, they redid his meal and didn't charge us for it, but it left all of us feeling very queasy and very wary of the kitchen standards and what we were all eating. We were obviously not going to risk any desserts and left as soon as we could with my husband feeling very unwell.

Really disappointing. A mix up.with th1e reservation meant we were in a cold, unheated upstairs atea. Kids ordered pizzas, but turned out no pizzas available. They ordered burgers instead. Unfortunately, these were not fully cooked. After pointing this out to a team member, it was fully 10 minutes before they came by to see if we would like them replaced, or provide the side vegetables which were ordered but had never arrived. I couldn't fault our waitress who was clearly new and inexperienced, but very helpful and doing her best to help. She clearly had no support from senior figures. Ultimately, I had to argue with the senior staff member, who was reluctant to give any discount at all on the full price of the meal, despite serving kids raw burgers. The rest of the food was mediocre at best.

Visited on 8/10 after a visit to Splash Landings. Fantastic little pub. Catered for a large group, 23 of us. Nothing was too much trouble. Staff, food and surroundings 5 star. Would highly recommend. We will be back.

Came here whilst we were visiting Alton Towers. Had a great evening, the food and service was top quality. The restaurant area was lovely. Will definitely come back next time we're in the area.

We called for a meal on the way home from Alton Towers, 6 adults and 3 children. The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough for us (The football was on but once it had finished the channel was swapped for us to watch the rugby World Cup) Clean plates all round. Good selection of food to choose from and fresh and home made. We will definitely call again if we are in the area.

A fantastic meal at the Bull's Head. We booked last minute on a Friday night for 12 people and they were so accommodating. They seated us upstairs so essentially we had a private area, they put music on for us and although we were out of sight the staff were very attentive, friendly and helpful. Thank you Bulls Head Team!

We are on holiday reviews for this place looked fab. We turned up were shown to our seats. No pizza available tonight sorry fair enough We didn't want pizza. We ordered nachos starter to share and it was lovely HOWEVER half way through our starter our main courses turned up. Now to be fair the staff did offer to take them away but they would have sat on a hot plate so we accepted them.Hubby had lasagne which looked lovely and he declared tasted lovely. I opted for steak kebab. It too was lovely but everything was hidden under the chips. The lady on the table next to me ordered steak kebab hers looked fab. Beautifully set out and chips in a separate container. Whilst I cannot fault the food it was lovely I felt rushed. It was a Monday night and several people had called saying they were stuck in traffic and would be 30 mins late. Staff said no worries we are not that busy. We weren't a walk in we booked in advance.

A great find if you want some decent food when staying at Alton Towers! Went 2 nights in a row, fantastic on both occasions 👌

We reserved a table for a bank holiday Sunday night. Setting and decor is lovely, but surprised at the lack of menu options and availability. Table and menus instantly looked tired and dirty. Service was very slow and we had to ask to order desserts twice before anybody came to us. All night we felt like we were annoying the staff asking for service. Generally we felt in the way and we never ordered attitude. Sad because years gone by this pub was top notch.

Whilst staying at Alton village we went In our first night to be told it was fully booked and told to book 24 hrs in advance. No problem with that and we did so we went back the next evening. As soon as we sat down we were told, just so your aware:- We have no steaks No pies. No lasagne left on the menu. This basically left, pizza, kebab or burgers.... 50% of a very small menu wiped out..... if you have limited choices at least have all the options! Food was ok, you could taste a coating off the grill On kebab meat so I think that needs a good clean but it was very average. We didn't stay for desert as we heard the table opposite be told we have none of this , none of that: and when the mother went ill Just have a coffee They said the coffee machine was broke 🤣🙈🤣🙈🤣 I' have to add the staff we dealt with on both nights we'd very very lovely and courteous. It is not there fault this pub is poorly managed. Such a shame as I'm a positive review person usually..... Wouldn't recommend, wouldn't ever go back.

Arrived without a reservation and got the distinct impression that the young man working the bar was annoyed that we were there. He did (begrudgingly?) find us a seat. The food was fine. Maybe I misread the whole thing, but I could swear something was amuck with the guy.

Such a lovely place to stay, the room is very modern and comfortable everything you’d need for a weekend stay in our case,we ate at the bulls head for our evening meal Aswell and it was lovely, would 100% recommend to stay here to anyone. Everyone was warm and welcoming. Will definitely be staying here again! 🙂 The food was lovely I enjoyed my fish and chips and my partner had a local beef burger he also really enjoyed we did share a portion of hallumi as our starter aswell which was again really nice. Overall I would say the price of everything was really fair for what you get. The only thing I would say Is we did find there wasn’t much parking when we arrived, we did phone up and staff were very helpful and suggested to park down one of the side streets across the road which there was no issues with!

We all absolutely loved our meals here - great pizzas, some of the best fish and chips we have ever had, a massive serving of nachos. The staff are lovely and the service was great. The only issue is that it can be a bit tricky to find somewhere to park on the tiny narrow village roads - we drove up past the pub to find a space and it was only a 3 minute walk away in the end.

Stayed here as a couple for Alton towers. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly. There was a problem In our room, instead of sending some one out to fix it, they upgraded our room in a heartbeat. Stayed at the restaurant for dinner which was also amazing. Deffo coming back soon.

Visited last time we came to Alton Towers and was great. Nearly didn’t return due to some of the reviews. Wasn’t busy when we went and was very friendly service and food was also great, great sized portions and no complaints from any of the meals. A nice pint of Cruzcampo and reasonable prices compared to Alton Towers.

Decided to try the Bulls Head in Alton on August 1st & wish we'd never bothered really. There wasn't many people dining & some of the meals others had would have easily been enough for 2 people. I ordered popcorn prawns with sweet chilli sauce...

Spent the afternoon there while kids were at Alton towers was made to feel very welcome and the dog too ! Free wifi so I could work from there and the fish and chips were delicious - lovely pub and lovely staff

Visited when staying at the Towers. Its a traditional old fashioned style pub. The food was very good indeed and had clearly been prepared by someone who cares. Portion size was generous, even for kids. We all enjoyed our food. If you are on a trip to Alton Towers and want a break from the mass produced fast food then I'd definitely recommend you try this place.

Won’t lie, possibly the best pub meal I’ve ever had. Service excellent in a wonderful pub, decent beer and wonderful setting. Will return when next in the area.

We booked at table here at 6:30 after a day at alton towers and walking in and it looked pretty empty so we thought it wouldn’t take long. We were seated upstairs with no body else and after 30 minutes they finally took our order...

I wanted to say a massive thank you to your team,bar and chef for the lovely evening we had celebrating my mums 60th on Weds. The food was amazing and to serve 30 like you did was great you really impressed everyone so please pass on our thanks 😊 We will be back soon!

Delicious food and good service - would recommend the kebabs!

Was in here yesterday after a recommendation. Staff were friendly however could be slightly more attentive. We ordered food and once we had sat for over an hour without any food and nobody spoke with us to explain what was going on. We enquired and the lovely bar girl let us know that there were struggles in the kitchen she apologised and did try to rectify it by offering us both a drink on the house. The starter came around 1 hour 20mins after being seated. The small plates were very tasty. We didn’t wait too long for main course which was a calzone and the stake pie. Although I asked for chips was given mash but that’s an easy mistake so we let this go. The calzone’s dough was under cooked but the filling was tasty. The steak pie’s meat was beautiful cooked however pie lid was under cooked and raw on the bottom. The mash potatoes were a disaster, don’t think they were home made, almost like a paste and wasn’t able to eat it. Due to how long we had waited for food we didn’t want to further complain due to the bar girl trying to put in every effort to make out dinner as good as she could. We did hear that it was a new chef and there had been issues but it wasn’t a great experience. I would say the appearance of the place is very nice atmosphere was not the best dude to other customers like ourself not happy with the food. Would come again but only for a drink in future as the food needs some work.

We just been there. Awful place! Stand next to restaurant not saying anything that doesnt have spaces, when we went inside first thing was smelling very badly, second thing none of waitress ask us anything, when I have ask about meniu, they ask me if I have booked the table because unfortunatly they cannot take it more, there was plenty empty tables.. after us more people was going inside, but probably for everyone was the same.

Went to have food at 19.30pm, apparently they had too many tabs opened, which was only 6, so they couldn’t serve us. Disappointing. There were lots of tables available and the staff didn’t seem too busy.

This place was fantastic. We ended up here because another spot wasn't serving food that day and we were so glad that happened. All four of us really enjoyed our food and the service.

Googled best pub near Alton towers for a cheeky bit of scran on the way home and this was showing as the best one. I’ve got to say I was very impressed with the service, however, the waiters customer service voice did sound a bit fake. Nevertheless it was evident he was very good at his job. Our food was goo. The starters were mediocre and quite pricy for what they were and the burger was a bit too greasy… but still presented very well and done to a high standard for a back street boozer. We did get chatting to a couple next to us about his kebab and he said it was horrible, but then said he was too polite to complain. We then observed a family also discuss their disappointment with the kebab. Overall, lovely little pub with a great aesthetic in the restaurant. Thank you

We booked in last minute, and they squeezed us in. The staff were very accommodating to our requests and when something was not right they put every effort into making it okay. A special mention for Rhys who gave excellent service and nothing was too much trouble. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.

Terrible food from my experience on Sunday. My girlfriend had lasagna it was burnt to a crisp and had littrally 1 layer of pasta.... Can't call that lasagna. I had chicken pie it was less than 1 inch thick and what was meant to be seasonal veg was a mushroom cut into a quarter,carrots and peppers not even a handful for all of it. We went to takeaway after was starving

After a lovely day out at Alton Towers we called into the Bulls Head for food, what a beautiful village pub this is the decor is outstanding and the food and the service were both excellent we will definitely be returning.

Quaint place with a warm and friendly feel. Modern drinks and food menu with just about anything for everyone (both alcoholic and non alcoholic) and a great à la carte dining menu. Spotlessly clean & distinguished hospitality.

Initially the service was excellent, but once we had our meal it seemed to end. The food was excellent, but the burger, fries, coleslaw and onion rings were missing the coleslaw and onion rings when served - nothing was said and no substitutes offered. When paying, a reduction was applied to the bill...

Food was average and ridiculous wait times. Waited 1 hour and 20 minutes for 2 deserts. Other diners were ordering packets of crisps as the food took that long

We dropped in here on a Saturday afternoon. Must have been a quiet spell. Food arrived quickly and the staff were friendly. We got the halloumi kebabs, and they are quite massive, tasty and fresh. The fries are good, too. The onion rings were a bit bland. Nice outdoor area, very peaceful spot.

If I could leave 0 stars I would, people running the pub have no manners whatsoever, they are so rude! You have kids making drinks and pulling pints, making rude remarks whilst serving. You’re better off going to the White Hart who serve you with...

BEWARE NEW OWNERSHIP! Incompetent, went on bank holiday Monday and we were the only ones there.... -Went in at 4:50pm and had to wait at the bar until 5pm because they couldn't take food until 5pm. - Could hear chef shouting and arguing with other members of staff in the kitchen. - Waited 35 mins for table olives, never arrived so left. Don't risk it go else where.

Great pub. Changed since I last went in years ago.

The meal was nice, steak and peppercorn sauce, Fish and chips (child) and Burger and chips (adult) BUT We made reservations for 6.45pm, so arrived at 6.30pm, got seated made orders, meals didn't arrive until 7.30pm after inquiring how long it was going to be....... Staff very apologetic..

Empty place at 6pm, but it was all booked and they wouldn’t let our family with kids sit for 1h to eat something. They just could not bother. Not a family-friendly place.

No irish allowed:Last time we visited here while in Alton Towers for family holiday we popped our heads in to see if it was busy, it was fairly empty so we brought our 3 kids in for dinner, the lady we spoke to about getting a table went up to another guy and chatted with him a few moments he came over then and said sorry we are fully booked up, I repeat the place was empty bar one or two customers, basically they were all smiles UNTIL they heard the Irish accent and it changed very sharpish. I can't describe how humiliated I felt, knowing the reason we had to tell the kids who were looking forward to a nice dinner they we were getting refused, so angry to this day about it and I hope you never have an ounce of luck with that attitude. We actually witnessed from outside other people walking in after us and getting taken care of! loved Alton Towers itself btw

Just went in after they reopened. Having been closed for a while I was pleased to be supporting them again. I know that the tenancy has changed and this means teething issues getting started but what I experienced with my family was DIABOLICAL customer service....

We feel we struck lucky. We were here on holiday in December and could not have hoped for a more welcoming pub. We ordered in advance from the Christmas menu and the food was wonderful and plentiful. In fact, we couldn't eat it all and...

Food was very dry and tasteless. We asked for warm water in a cup and they came to ask 3 times what we wanted. Other than that it was alright.

Visiting the area so we booked here for an evening meal. Had I stumbled home drunk and microwaved myself burger and oven chips, it would have beaten this offering. Dried out plant burger on a cold brioche bun, semi cooked pale chips, and a very sorry slab of iceberg lettuce and tomato. No kimchi as promised on the menu. Maybe they were just having a bad night… 🤔 Staff were great, however, very attentive and polite.

Nice meal and chilled atmosphere

Went here for a meal with a hen party, the staff were lovely, very polite, food was delicious, nothing was too much trouble.

One of the best meals I’ve ever had and easily the best pizza I’ve ever eaten. Phenomenal food, and such lovely, generous and prompt service. An issue in the booking system had meant they didn’t know about our table for ten, but they immediately made it work and we ended up with the large upstairs room to ourselves. It’s not the cheapest place on Earth but the portion sizes and quality of food and service more than make the cost a very good deal. Also, almost the entire menu is (or can be made) gluten free, and when we requested adding prawns (of all things) to a calzone filled with onion chutney and Camembert, they were happy to and only charged an extra pound! We will be back as soon as possible. Faultless.

Really friendly helpful staff. We had come from away (stayed at Alton towers) and met up with family here. Food was very reasonably priced but more so, it was amazing. We both had steak...LUSH! Kids pizza meal was amazing too, pizza was huge not those flimsy little kiddie pizzas you normally get everywhere (my kids are aged 11yrs). £125 to feed 4 adults, 2 kids plus alcohol and kids drinks. Thought this price was amazing! Well done to all at The Bulls Head

Lovely nice friendly pub 👌 the staff were fantastic and locals were very welcoming 🙏 and the log fire 🔥 was fantastic and the 🍻 🍺 wine 🍷 were excellent 😀 10/10
