Nice to see The Bull back in action..... it had been closed for a while and it's actually probably decades since my companion and I had last visited. Nice feel to the bar which seemed a comfortable place for a quiet drink. We had dinner. There's a simple stone floor and open fire and the pub is quite remote so it all felt quite self-contained in its mood.

Lovely country traditional pub and restaurant with cosy open fire and log burner. Great cider, delicious food, friendly helpful staff. Dog friendly in bar, large beer garden, great location looking at the black hill cats back. Highly recommend a visit.

Wow what a amazing place, lovely renovated bub with all the original features you would expect from a country pub. The food was amazing, very small menu but when the food is that good it really doesn't matter. Best meal we have had out for a long time, definitely made it in to our to 5 places to eat and 3 of those hold a Michael star so it's pretty dam good. Staff we amazing aswell, just leave yourself plenty of time to get there as the road is bad. 5 stars from us

Every course was on point. The cooking was perfect and the balance of flavours well judged. The staff were lovely, the Old Fashioned great. It was a rainy, windy, autumn day and the pub was busy with a lovely cosy vibe. Farm to table and nose to tail principles were the ethical cherries on the cake. Best pub meal you can have around Hay on Wye without a doubt.

We stumbled across the Bulls Head after a rainy walk - we knew instantly it was a gem. The food was really top notch. I had 80 day aged beef, my partner had hake. Both beautifully presented and tasted superb. I had a side of marmite cabbage which was interesting! And then the desserts! The Muscavado and Madeira tart was just dreamy and the cheese board a perfect mix of tangy Caerphilly cheese and pear. And the service was brilliant.

We came here on a recommendation, the location is beautiful, the pub quaint and the staff lovely and friendly - but there it ends! The food was tasteless/bland (how can you make roast beef bland!), served warmish/cold, very limited menu, which isn't a bad thing if the food is good! Service was slow for the food - 1 hour and 15 minutes before the main arrived (as above luke warm/cold!) It was also expensive for what you had with service automatically added - I could understand for large parties but not for 5! I would love to give it another try but the reviews are a bit hit and miss - I would say it is a great location for a drink and to revel in the location!

We stopped for something from the 'bar menu', the bar menu was 4 or 5 items from the dinner menu at the same prices. Nothing was exactly bad (but see below), but nothing really good either; as we probably should have guessed a cider infused sorbet with some chunks of granola in it was just vile. Like finding a tooth in a mashed and almost frozen sock. Our bill was steep, and not just because we were overcharged, and, as others have pointed out, we were charged for service on the bar food including drinks. The atmosphere was one of an authentic drover's pub but with nary a drover in sight, they'd driven elsewhere unsurprisingly.

Fantastic Sunday lunch. Delicious house red at 5.50 for a glass, perfectly pink roast beef with pickled mushrooms, sticky toffee pud to die for. Husband equally delighted with the lamb, a very good pint and perfect pairing of local cheese and pickled pears ( I know, sounds weird, but chef knows what he's doing). Great service in atmospheric surroundings and all for 27 quid for 2 courses. A fitting reward after cycling via gospel pass from Hay. Only problem was leaving to cycle the last 6 miles back. A place to linger.

Fabulous building , quaint ,stylish ,and rustic. The menu was interesting and well thought out. I chose the pigeon breast which was tender but the jus /sauce was extremely salty ! My husband chose the steak and the chips were delicious ! The evening was really lovely with a good atmosphere and pleasant staff .

Everything perfect except the food. Odd menu; 3 dishes containing red meat, 1 vegetarian option which was Gnocchi; bland and unimaginative. Please improve the food, everything else is there.

Our third visit and The Bulls Head continues to impress. The food is outstanding and this is where we are starting to go to celebrate or treat visitors. We eat vegetarian and, though the local meat is very much a focus, we have always had something interesting to savour. Our meat eating friends and relatives have very much enjoyed their choices. Tucked away in beautiful surroundings it's well worth a visit.

This place was a BIG BIG disappointment as we had gone there for a special occasion. The menu was weird and none of the party really fancied anything on it. The food was poorly cooked, tasteless and greasy. The only think in its favour is the lovely location and the nicely restored inn, Maybe OK to go for a drink but avoid eating there,

Pleasant surroundings outside, unfortunately the food was not too a very high standard. Ham and piccalilli sandwich, ham tasteless (wafer thin and breaded, supermarket family pack springs to mind). Should have been advertised as a Piccalilli sandwich, Coffee was fine.

I absolutely love being in this place and it has a beautifully calm feel. However I am totally astonished by the dolls-house size servings for lunch- at normal lunch prices. I almost asked them if they hadn’t accidentally given me a kiddie’s portion - for a cheaper price- as for over £9 I got two slices of delicious small rye toast, about 7 very small lettuce leaves, 4 olives and a small pot of delicious dip. All very tasty but absolutely not a main course. I know I these are locally sourced ingredients but this felt really wrong. I will definitely return for post lunch coffees but will make sure to eat somewhere else where I can fuel up for lunch before hand.
