After 12 years, we returned to this fantastic walking location and were thrilled to find that, under new ownership, The Hostelerie exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our spotless room. The room was clean, comfortable, and fully equipped for an enjoyable stay. Sally, the front-of-house manager, was outstanding, ensuring we were well cared for throughout, with great support from her team. Both breakfast and dinner were exceptional, with the high quality of ingredients and remarkable flavors leaving a lasting impression.

Just back from a relaxing two-day break here, while visiting the Wye Valley, including the English Heritage Goodrich Castle - a short walk from the hotel. We slept comfortably in our four-poster room and ate very well from the temptations offered by chef/owner Daniel. My wife said her whitebait was the best she’d ever eaten. Historical building recently updated for style and comfort by the owners. Friendly staff and an inviting bar made this a very pleasant stay.

We really didn't understand why you would put 4 chairs in front of the bar in the restaurant and don't expect your guests to sit there for 5 minutes with a pre-dinner drink before going to their table. The insistence on the head-waiter that we couldn't sit there for 10 minutes in the empty bar chairs and had to go to our table was ebyong comprehension. Anyway, that said, some meals were reasonable but some of the choices or combinations in some of the other mains were ridiculous. We travel and dine a bit but this was out there and didn't work for us. Not that impressed

I visited with my partner and his parents last year for a drink after a nice long walk around our local area. I ordered three local pints and a glass of Merlot. I was then faced with twenty questions from the owner about the type of grape, region and 'notes' of the wine! I just wanted a nice glass of Merlot. Too much emphasis and time spent on the wine. I returned to my table flummoxed! We have not returned. This used to be a nice place to visit, however, it is unreliable (it was closed for months) and the pretentious theme is just not us. Having read some of the responses from the owner in relation to other reviews, I recommend the owner adopts a new approach otherwise new and existing customers will be driven away. It is unacceptable and rude to use the phrase 'unfortunate offspring' in response to a review.

Limited menu . Overpriced . Fried egg on top of mushrooms ! Why ? Doesn’t belong . Mushrooms were way over seasoned and the bread was like a crisp . My steak was rare but cold . Rookie error . Although the steak was nice and the chimichuri sauce was nice . The chips were way over seasoned. The pudding should have been a delice but was a tart that was that hard I couldn’t get my spoon in . Too be fair I did complain and the tart was taken off . Really disappointed. Lovely pub and the young lady that served us was a delight . In my opinion concentrating on the wine and not the food has no place in this area. It was very quiet and that says it all . We drove by another pub on our way home and their car park was busy so clearly the hostelerie is doing something wrong.

First and last meal we had at the Hostelrie. The food was subpar and absolutely not worth the price, meat was extremely fatty and the rest of the food was bland. The worst thing about the Hostelrie is the staff. I’ve never come across such rude and passive aggressive people. The manager, who I assume to be Katherine- the very passive aggressive woman responding to these honest reviews requires some lessons in decorum and basic manners. She is a very unpleasant and unprofessional woman. They served a tiny vegetable ‘platter’ for 4 people, therefore we politely requested another, the waitress responded ‘yes’ and walked away. We received the platter once we had finished the edible parts of our food so we no longer needed it. The waitresses and manager outright lied and claimed we were told there would be a wait on the vegetables and rudely stated we had to pay for it. Believe these reviews and give your money to restaurants that deserve it. There was also only one other table occupied at 3pm on a Sunday before Christmas- says it all really…

The Hostelry is in a beautiful spot. The gardens looked lovely and the restaurant was well set out, very clean and looked attractive. We didn't much appreciate the music though ... it was out of place. We received a warm welcome from a young lad who did his utmost throughout our visit. The menu was interesting and there was much to tempt us, and we deliberated for ages. Sadly, the food didn't live up to the expectation. The smoked mackerel pate, although tasty, was a very small portion and looked lost on the plate. The tomato risotto was tasteless and lacked seasoning. The sea bass, although well cooked, again lacked flavour and the braised spelt just didn't work for us. The schnitzel sounded delicious on the menu description, but was nothing special. The 'twice cooked chips' genuinely looked and tasted like skin on oven fries. Our daughter enjoyed her burger though. A £23 bottle of Sauvignon Blanc arrived at room temperature, with no cooler. Having looked forward to dessert when reading the menu, we declined after the experience of the starters and mains. Again, we were served throughout by an extremely pleasant young chap who although inexperienced, was trying really hard. Full marks to him. By the time we left the restaurant was full. Great to see - although there didn't seem to be much food coming out and people were clearly getting frustrated at the wait times. All in all, a disappointing visit on the last night of our holiday, which held so much potential. There is much which could be improved and we wish them well. This place could be a gem.

We were seated outside, due to the current restrictions. The service was quick taking our order but quite slow in serving the food. It was a very limited menu which we understandably with the current regulations. There seemed to be too much time between being served the courses. The barley and garlic risotto starter was excellent. The mains were a choice of roast beef or pork belly, both enjoyed with fresh roast potatoes and veg. Unfortunately we were not asked if we required more drinks. We had to chase our desserts as about 40 mins passed. Then eventually they turned up with half our party of six served the wrong dessert. They had to be sent back and we then had to wait a further 10/15 mins for our correct order and an apology. The food was lovely and we all enjoyed our meals but the service was not attentive an quite slow.

The food is excellent, beautifully presented and of a very high standard with good service too. We had smoked mackerel pate as a nibble (perfect size if you can’t eat a full starter), the wild garlic and parsley risotto and steak and chips. I had a crab and prawn salad which was very tasty. Husband had the steak which was a bit tough in places. Portions all generous. Dessert menu was small but to be expected given current situation. I'm a big pudding fan and even I struggled to finish my huge portion of brownies. They were great.Sadly the service wasn't the best. Waiter pretty much ran off without giving us a chance to order more drinks. We had one evening meal in the bar whilst we were visiting the area. It was cosy and bustling and we liked that, however, by the end of our meal, the bar was full of dogs. Very friendly, accomodating staff. Lots of dogs. Starter of mussels was perfection, absolutely delicious. Burger a disappointment since, probably because, it was made from well hung Hereford beef it was incredibly dry and could have done with being cut with some pork to moisten it. Similarly the Brownie had no gooyness to it with a dry crust. Beer well kept but both the Hereford bitter and the Butty Bach thin on flavour. Never the less an enjoyable time.

We stayed here for three days and used the restaurant every night. The menu is not extensive but this means that the chef can concentrate on the quality of the raw ingredients and exactness in the cookery. The purchasing policy is to use local wherever possible, as evidenced by the lamb, pork, steaks and asparagus which comes from less than four miles away. There is plenty of seating in the bar area and the separate restaurant, though this was not needed during our stay. The new season asparagus was delicious both as a starter and as going with the lamb rack and we sought out a shop to take a supply home.Staff were friendly and efficient, and we will return if we are in the area in the future

I had the most interesting and tasty meal I have had for a long time at this pub - guinea fowl with cavolo nero, wild mushrooms and celeriac mash: might sound a bit pretentious, but it was delicious and a sensible sized portion. For dessert we had pudding with ginger and dates and that was great too. A notice in the restaurant area warned that service would not be quick because dishes are individually prepared. However the wait was not excessive. I have often waited a lot longer at other pubs for food nowhere near as good and with no warning. Whilst the food was not cheap, one could pay a great deal more at some places for food of that quality, and get a less generous portion. The coffee too was good and plentiful.

This is a lovely building and we were looking forward to our meal. Firstly we found the menu uninspiring and almost walked out at this point. I ordered a pint of my favourite beer Butty Bach which I've had on many occasions. This time the beer was borderline being off, it just didn't quite taste right. When the food arrived we found it to be very average and nothing special. For this reason we would have scored the Hostelries 3 out of 5. However the food was very expensive for what it was and in our opinion represented poor value for money. We therefore give 2 out of 5. Bottom line, you can get the same for less money elsewhere, or more for the same money elsewhere.

Went for Sunday lunch - beautifully cooked roast beef and veg, only complaint is that the roast potatoes could be improved. Lovely pudding and excellent friendly service. Reasonable price

Just happened to be passing, found the Hostelrie. Lovely surprise, good food, had the roast beef Sunday lunch. Dog friendly, children friendly. Great atmosphere will come again.

Stopped by when in the area and the food was lovely. Service was brilliant and had a lot of fun with the waiter. Shame about the people next to us, number 1 Sauvignon indeed!

Very good food, although the vegetarian options seem to be over priced and suppleenting the meat eaters.....

Stopped here for an evening meal as staying on holiday a short walk away. Food was tasty and generous in portion size but the menu was unimaginative, very little choice for vegetarians and we did not return for the rest of our trip but ate out further away instead. Also on the night we visited there were a lot of dogs in milling about whilst we were trying to eat. Although I’m happy to see dogs welcome I do feel owners should be encouraged to get seated and keep their dogs away from other guests who may not be keen, particularly when food is being served.

Very disappointing meal - had the ham, egg and chips. The ham was delicious, fried egg good but then how can you go wrong with an egg - but the chips which were advertised as fresh hand cut chips were rock hard and tasted like they'd been reheated. Presentation was hopeless - I was expecting a bit of salad or peas but nothing. Paid £11.99 which is at the higher price bracket for the area, so unfortunately won't be returning.

A very friendly welcome but a disappointing menu. All five of us ended up with the ham, egg and chips, which is our fall back choice when nothing else appeals. Having said that, the food was really good. Everyone complemented the ham, the two eggs had a rich yolk and the chips were as good as they get. Worth a visit.

Tucked away in the small village grown up around Goodrich Castle the Hostelrie ticks all boxes. It has history, very attentive and friendly staff and excellent food.

This hotel/pub/restaurant is located just off the main road from Ross to South Wales very close to Goodrich castle. We had a party of 9 and the food was excellent. Service was very good and price very reasonable. I would particularly recommend the deserts and the ice cream. Good choice for vegetarians as well.

Ate here 3 times during our stay. Food was superb and the staff excellent. Wonderful Longhorn and Herefordshire steaks and lovely chalk stream trout. A warm and friendly welcome for you and your 4 legged friends.

Nice location but food very sub-standard. Cheese sandwich consisted of dry bread that had obviously been standing about all morning. A few limp bits of salad and a dusting of stale, grated cheese.

I visited for the first time today. I am regularly in Leominster as I have a caravan nearby, but didn't know this place existed. It has a lovely, shabby-chic atmosphere. There is a huge collection of books which are all in good condition - perfect for Virgos like me who get anal about an unsullied spine. The coffee was excellent and the cake was really yummy. The service was really friendly. This will be my new regular haunt when I'm in Leominster. I much prefer to support independent, local businesses. Love it!
