A really nice Sunday roast meal well located in the old town of Margate. The food was great and could not be faulted, but unfortunately the service and atmosphere made this a frustrating experience. We initially booked our table for 2 for 2:15 through OpenTable. Upon arrival, we were asked when we booked it, and we were then told that they might not be able to fit us in even though our booking was in the system and we could see it. However, we were shown to a table to fit 4, which was appreciated. Yet shortly after being served drinks, we were then asked if we could move again as the table was reserved now for another group. This would not have been an issue, but the table we were then taken to was crammed right next to a sofa with children running around, push chairs and other tables very closely packed together. As mentioned, the food was excellent and really cannot fault it at all, but had the food not been great, we would have requested a discount on our bill. Appreciate that Sundays can be busy and chaotic, but the majority of the experience felt chaotic and unenjoyable (except the food).

A place full of charm. Friendly staff that makes you feel welcomed. I'm super happy that it's a dog friendly place, Why are there more places in Margate that are not dog friendly, I don't get it... Food was very tasty and big portions. We enjoyed our lunch here and the price was right.

We had a delightful Sunday lunch today. We had a large table of 8 and extra people joined us at the last minute. The staff accommodated this with no fuss, giving us extra stools to squeeze in. I ordered the Aubergine and my husband had the roast pork, both arrived promptly with lashings of gravy, crispy Yorkshire puddings and colourful veg (not overcooked or grey). Our friend who is normally vegetarian even ordered the beef after seeing plates come out and hearing how good the quality of the meat was. The staff were kind, efficient and the whole visit was a pleasure. We highly recommend this great pub and shall return on our next visit to Margate. Thanks 🙏

Exceptional food and the most welcoming staff. Spent a weekend in Margate and went to this pub for a fish and chips. Everything was so fresh and perfectly seasoned, we had to go back on the Sunday to try their roast which did not disappoint. This is probably the best roast I have had in years, the dishes incorporated a mix of flavours bringing a beautifully balanced explosion of taste on the palette. The staff were very helpful helping with amazing wines to pair with the food, we then completed the meal with stunning espresso martinis. Will definitely be making a stop here on our next visit to Margate. 5/5

Pub is lovely. Garden is large and nice to sit in. Pub staff are great and if you want a place to go for a drink and some time with family/mates I'd give this 4/5 stars. They have music on regularly, too and that's always good. Reason for 3 star review is the food. They have a food stall in the garden run by a 3rd party. They are well meaning and the food is fairly decent but they are unfortunately quite disorganised with their ordering system. They're clearly a family business and trying their best, I would have loved to give them a rave review but, after 3 separate tries, we won't be going back (at least for the food). First time we went there they accidentally gave our order to another table - that's ok, these things happen. But we only found out 45 mins later when we chased up our food and were told by the table they'd given it to.. who had eaten our order and then were getting their original order prioritised over ours... the kitchen/staff didn't think to tell us any of this. So we waited an hour and a half for a mixed grill, when it eventually arrived it was pretty decent. 2nd time we went they'd introduced buzzers for order collection and, whilst we still had to wait a good 45 mins for food, it all went OK and tasted good. So we went back a 3rd time hoping for good things and, unfortunately, it was worse than the first time around. It was a busy day but not crazy (there were some empty tables in the garden and not everyone was ordering food) but after ordering kids food and stiff for the adults it became clear that the guys were struggling with the orders/timing and finding it stressful. We waited over 30 mins before 1st asking when the kids food was coming and, after an hour it became clear that they still hadn't started cooking it.. when they eventually did it only took 5 mins or so but we had some very hangry kids to deal with in the meantime. Our food took the best part of 2hrs to arrive by which time everyone wanted to have been home/gone already. Really hope for their sake (and the pubs) that they sort out their system. It's not that hard. We won't be going again for food

Absolute rip off, £3.50 for a dash of post mix coke with an alcoholic spirit at £8, when I asked if that was correct apparently it was, there is an also an optional service charge of £3, it’s not optional at all as when I asked for it to be removed I was told that as I’d ordered some chicken to eat outside I had to pay it. As for said fried chicken bites at £8, absolutely disgusting, grey and vile tasting as if they’d been sat around for a month, I would have complained but realised the staff wouldn’t have done anything about it, so what’s the point. This is the third time I’ve visited this pub and sadly every time there’s been some problem. Shame as it’s 2 mins from my house but clearly they don’t cater for or appreciate business from their locals. I won’t be visiting again, £25 for a spirit and post mix dash with 4 tiny disgusting chicken bites is an absolute joke. Don’t bother, much better places around!

Our experience at this restaurant was deeply disappointing. We waited 20 minutes just to receive the food menu, which was only the beginning of a frustrating meal. After placing our food order, it took 1.5 hours for the food to arrive at the table, with no communication from the staff about any delays. We were a group of eight, with five of us ordering the same dish—the pork belly. Not only were key elements of the dish missing (such as the apple purée), but only four of the five orders were served. When we pointed this out, we discovered that the staff had forgotten to place the fifth order, resulting in one person waiting an additional 15-20 minutes for their meal. Another member of our party ordered the steak, but it was so overly salted that it was inedible. When we informed the staff, the dish was not replaced; we were simply told that they would inform the chef. We also overheard the table next to us complaining about the same issue with their steak. The most disappointing aspect of the entire experience was the lack of acknowledgment or apology for the poor service.

Amazing pub in the heart of Margate old town and very accessible. We have always passed it by as it was very much a locals haunt. It is under new management and underwent a complete refurbishment and is now very quirky and stylishly decorated in that shabby chic way. We went midweek and it was quieter which made it a gentle introduction. Bar person let me try a beer as I wasn't sure which one to order, which was nice. We had 2 amazing sandwiches with chips and both were delicious (as we shared). Very yummy and filling and packed with real meat! Compliments to the chef:). There is a beer garden area at the rear so you can sit there and eat in good weather though lots of different sized tables and areas to sit inside. Thoroughly recommend a visit when in Margate. Keep up the good work.....we will return.

Painfully, ridiculously, inexcusably slow. Waited an hour for our food at 6pm in a half empty pub. Then they came out in two stages, with the kids order wrong. Getting drinks was similarly excruciating. The food was decent when it came but by that point the evening was spoiled. Other tables around us were still waiting when we left.

The food was perfectly fine. The atmosphere and playlist were enjoyable. Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I waited an hour and twenty-five minutes for our food. After an hour’s wait, the hostess came over to apologise, and then ten minutes later she offered us a free refill on our sodas, which we appreciated. We saw other tables who were seated after us get served first. We were sitting near the bar and listened to at least five other tables complain about the wait, and the table beside us walked out. You could the feel frustration amongst all the customers, and I felt sympathy and stressed out on behalf of the wait staff. The explanation they gave was that they were overwhelmed with orders when the kitchen opened, but from reading other reviews it seems there has been problems with this issue for quite some time. This place has a lot of charm and potential, but there seems to be some significant communication problems amongst staff that are hampering the experience. We had to make significant adjustments to our plans for the remainder of the night as a result of this wait, so I can’t in good faith recommend this place, though I appreciated the gesture of giving us a free cola for the inconvenience.

A lovely pub, but on the day we visited the food was slow and when it arrived was not what we ordered. They served Mozarella, crispy onions and tomatoes when we ordered a Panzanella salad. Called for a drink on a quiet Monday night. After pouring the drinks we ordered I was advised it was card only that as far as I could see was not displayed anywhere. Worse for 2 drinks (a pint and a dark rum and coke) the cost was £18.50. This was 3 times the cost of the spoons (Mechanical Elephant) down the road which accepts cash and cards. The bank transaction fees for the card payments must be astronomical! Avoid if you want to be able to afford more than 1 drink and don't want to line the big banks' profits.

This is constructive criticism. A group of 6 of us came in to the pub. At no point when we were being served were we informed of card only payment. Equally this wasn’t displayed anywhere where customers could see this clearly. A notice was only displayed once we advised the bar staff to take the drinks bank. Only then would they accept cash. As customers it’s not good customer service service. In addition the bar staff poured all of the bottle of mixer into the the drink. That isn’t good practice it should be the customers choice on whether to pour the mixer in or not. The bar attender was very pleasant but maybe there should be more training given with regards to pouring drinks.

Mayhem in the kitchen. Food was over price and completely underwhelming (we ordered two of the sandwiches), the pints were London prices, and the wait for it all was.extraordinary. To top it off kitchen staff were angry and it permeated the entire pub. The only saving grace was the friendly hostess who tried her best, but what can you do on a sinking ship? Some of the highlights of my trip included the women's toilets that had the holes in the wood so large, I could see into the basement. Others before me had managed to fill some of the up skirting peep holes with toilet paper.

Managed to get squeezed in via a morning email to find when we arrived at 3pm there were plenty of empty tables. Took up the offer of still water for the table only to find it was a £5 bottle - most restaurants now offer tap water as standard so I did kick myself for not specifying. Standard Sunday roast on offer which took nearly 30mins to arrive. No cauli cheese - perhaps that was an extra side? Only 3 large roast potatoes with a decent portion of carrots. These were crunchy, like the string beans which is fine but I do draw the line at crunchy leek (in my opinion leeks should be buttery and soft!). The Yorkshire pudding was actually really good - not something I'd usually have as I prefer to fill up on veg, but not much choice in the matter here. I was really most disappointed with my mushroom and beetroot Wellington. Have no idea where the beet was, mushroom in a tasty paste around the pastry but the middle was very rubbery soya type protein- not what I expected. My husband practically inhaled his beef & the gravy for both was rich and satisfying but I did have to ask for more. Over £60 for 2meals with a pint and a large gin, plus the added service charge was more than we expected for frankly not enough food. Staff were fine and interesting (half finished?) decor. Sorry, would not recommend.

The venue was full but we were the only ones having a Christmas meal so Axel looked after us personally. It was honestly the best Christmas meal I have had in a restaurant. The standard of the cooking was exceptional and we felt very Christmassy sitting by the beautifully decorated tree. My friends and I had chicken supreme, roast beef and roast pork. All of them were extremely tender and came with all the festive trimmings. The roast potatoes were lovely and crispy and golden and the portions were so generous only 2 of us could manage a dessert - lemon posset - which was deliciously rich. All in all our Christmas meal was superb, thanks to Axel. Thank you very much - we look forward to our next Sunday roast with you!

We visited this place on a Sunday lunchtime . The starter of scotch egg was very nice and we were all looking forward to a nice roast dinner. We ordered cauliflower cheese as an extra but overall the whole dinner was very disappointing. The main meal while tasty was barely warm. We sent the cauliflower cheese back and asked for it to be heated up. The cauliflower cheese had next to no sauce on it - just very watery and didn’t see any cheese! The waitress was very attentive and asked a couple of times how our dinner was. We gave her the feedback and said how disappointed we were overall. She said she would pass our comments to the chef. Well the chef clearly wasn’t a bit concerned as there was no apology or offer of recompense however small. The total bill came to nearly £250 ( although we did have 3 courses with drinks ) but we were charged £25.50 service charge. We declined to pay this but did leave a smaller cash tip. The main annoyance, apart from a cold dinner is that no-one seemed to care. Had the chef/manager made some sort of contact we would have left feeling much better than we did. We all know things happen and no-one gets everything right 100% of the time but the fact that no-one was bothered means we will not be going back

I got the cauliflower cheese as an extra, which was on £4 and was enough for 2. Great price for a lovely lunch. Staff were friendly and helpful too.

I had a great Sunday roast today, the pork was cooked perfectly and I loved the miso carrots! The meal was delicious and the service was great, friendly and happy staff. The atmosphere is cosy and the re-vamp is really well done. I’d recommend booking on a Sunday as it was really busy :)

Went here for lunch as everywhere else was full. Food was very average for the price being charged. Not the best, definitely in the average bracket

Won't be coming back. They won't let you go to the bar yourself and then charge service charge on every drink you buy because you are forced to sit down. Very strange way to run a pub setting.

Avoid! Table service only. Hidden 12.5% service charge - made it over £7 for a beer/cider. Basic drinks menu. No explanation of what each beer is, which takes a lot of the pleasure out of the pub experience. At least it was somewhere to sit down in the shade, and the drinks were nice, but the same available elsewhere for cheaper and a better experience.

Wannabe Hackney/Shoreditch pub with attitudinal problem staff. Don’t say table service if a pint takes 15 minutes to arrive/or never does when the pub isn’t even busy. Won’t be coming back.

Vastly improved but this was reflected in the cost of the drinks / service

It’s really nice to have a proper pub in the old town. However, this falls slightly short - not having a bar and just being table service only is a big drawback. It creates a slightly isolated feeling where you can’t chat at the bar. And your also dependent on the staff being very attentive… further to this, I got charged 12.5% service without being told or asked if I wanted to.

We found this gem by accident , they do a BBQ on a Sat and Sun and it smelt amazing ! Unfortunately they had stopped serving food , the chef came and said there was some food left over and if would like to have it ! It was a ground beef flat bread and a corn Thai inspired dish, all I can say it wow ! The food and flavours were amazing ! We chatted to all the friendly staff and owner and we will definitely be back , we wish you lots of luck x

I’m sorry to have to do this because I never like to leave negative feedback, however, I’m an honest reviewer so here we go. I get the impression that the manager here is quite strict and when talking to the staff they seem on edge all the time. I feel bad for them. Some examples. One staff member said ‘i better get these empties or I will get told off’. I also walked through the door and every member of staff turned around and looked at me (on edge). I also predict that the guy with the tattoos and cowboy boots is the manager. He was running the bbq when we came in today. I asked politely what he would recommend for menu and he just said, ‘the menu is there’. Sorry to ruffle the feathers, but a few changes by management would not go a miss here

Had a couple of pints here but it wasn't that welcoming. The guy with the cowboy boots was pretty rude too. That didn't help. £6.75 a pint 😐. BBQ food looked terrible. Could do a better job myself. The other staff were nice though.

Dissatisfied with the service - popped in for a quick drink and found the 4 people stood around the bar to be uninterested in serving us (or taking a second order, so we left after our first). The fact they charged 12.5% service was rubbing salt in the wound - not even a thank you when paying, only a lazy arm held out for the POS machine - no goodbye when we left. We were perfectly polite and surprised at this experience. I hope the owner reads this - the refurb you have done is fantastic - great style, effort and sophisticated. If you can sort the service out to match the surrounds, you'll have a gem. Will come back in time to come and hope for a better reception.

Visited for lunch which was made via outdoor barbecue. The food was ok but it cost us over £70 for 3 of us. For full transparacy our order was 2 x burgers 1 x chicken wings 3 x tater tots 2 x soft drinks and 1 x cocktail. Tater tots were £5 for a small portion. There was an added 12.5 % service charge on the bill that was not dicussed and did not say was discretionary on the itemisation. None of our party noticed any signage with regards to this. Service charges are by no means industry standard as being implied. Certainly not at pub barbecues or pints from the bar. We saw the (friendly and lovely) waitress twice. Of course we would have tipped her - at our own rate. £12 for a burger with no sides IS ridiculous. "All the trimmings" consisted of a slice of cheese, a slice of gerkin and relish out of a bottle. Staff are professional and welcoming. Pub is clean and stylish but we won't be back at those prices for barbecue food. Wish we'd read the reviews before popping in! We eat out regularly all over and different types of cusine - we are quite aware of current prices. If the food was super special I could understand the price. It wasn't. NOTES I've read and edited my review in response to the owners reply. Again I wish I'd read their earlier attitude to other reviewers before visiting. I am not slating this business in fact my original review was very fair so I'll let the good people of Margate and it's visitors make up their own minds. All the best.
