Chef Mark continues to bring surprises that will place a smile on your face. We enjoyed the nine course tasting menu paired with wine and it brought a joy to our dining palates. Bulls Head continues to be on dining experiences when visiting the UK and Mark does not disappoint. Chef and his team demonstrated clearly how they have earned those accolades and we were the beneficiaries of their skills and talents. Thank you for a wonderful evening and dining experience .. now how do I cook that egg to that perfect temperature?

I can’t say enough good things about our wonderful experience at The Bulls Head. We booked a 5pm taster menu with wine flight, for my daughter’s birthday. There were 7 adults and a very well behaved 10 month old (of course we weren’t nervous at all!) who loved her first fine dining experience. The lovely welcome that we got from the whole team started the evening off in a great atmosphere. The food was incredible, and each accompanying wine was perfect. Staff were very knowledgeable and it really added something special to our experience learning about the food and wine. They offer a variety of dining options, and we will definitely be back again, hopefully before Christmas… can’t wait! As I have already said, all the team were just great, but a special mention to Tom, who clearly loves his role, he has the blend of friendly and helpful with total professionalism just right. A great night all round… thank you ‘Team Bulls Head’.

Beautful surroundings and relaxing atmosphere. Staff were very attentive but not pushy, we were not rushed at all. The food was excellent and the beef was cooked perfectly, although the dinner could have been warmer. Extra gravy was not a problem as I love lots. The whole experience was very enjoyable. The tasting menu will be our next venture here.

Did you know that this charming country Pub & Restaurant with rooms; Bulls Head in Holymoorside, is now serving breakfast Saturdays & Sundays 9:30-10:30?? Well now you do, so what are you waiting for?? Renowned for its 5 star accommodation & restaurant with 3 Rosette Award for culinary excellence AND NOW IN THE MICHELIN GUIDE, this Restaurant & Pub is nestled in the gorgeous Derbyshire countryside and promises to bring you the freshest, local produce all superbly cooked and presented by Chef Mark Aisthorpe (Great British Menu 2022 Finalist) As of very recently, their breakfast menu has now been opened to the public on weekends, and it’s not to be missed. We enjoyed; Fresh coffees (£3.80)- these went down a treat Freshly Baked Croissants served with butter & preserves (£3.25) – these were warm and crisp and a great start to our breakfast Full English (£15.00); free range scrambled eggs, prime pork Sausage, dry curry bacon, homemade black pudding, mushroom, tomatoes & baked beans with sourdough toast – the way the breakfast is presented is appealing & positively misleading, it looked a small portion but boy is it filling! The thickest cut bacon ever, lovely cubed black pudding, scrambled eggs made with cream. VERY good indeed. Eggs Benedict (£14.00); 2 poached free range eggs with smoked bacon and homemade Hollandaise sauce on toasted Brioche – the yolk pop says it all, the eggs were for me pure perfection. This is a gorgeous, smart country pub that also hosts tasting menu evenings and other events, and I hope to return again in the future. After our breakfast here, we visited Chatsworth Estate only 15 min drive away for a 6 mile walk. What a lovely day

How this place is Michelin recommended I have no idea. It was dead, the music was loud and just such a weird mix of genre. The food was cold served on cold plates, many items over cooked. This is our first visit and it will not be our last. We chose the 5 course taster menu (actually 6 courses as we opted for the extra scallop course) and everything was superb. We live locally and it is great to have found a fine dining experience on our doorstep. Each course is visually appealing and very creative with a mix of tastes and textures. As is the case with fine dining each course is not substantial but at the end of the meal we are pleasantly, but not uncomfortably, full. We are delighted to have found somewhere that serves up food in a style that we could not create at home and at a price which, whilst above average, is good value. When you want to treat yourself or perhaps celebrate a special occasion this is the place to go to.

I don't offen write reviews, however after a very disappointing visit to the bulls head I feel it is my duty to do so. I've heard a few good things about the bulls head and after reading reviews we decided to have a meal there. However as soon as we pulled into the car park we started to have second thoughts. The exterior of the pub can only be described as dilapidated, half of the bulls head sign is missing the paint is peeling, the carpark full of litter, the hedge is over grown and the flowers dead and the windows dirty. The 'garden' was very scruffy and very dirty, there was not one clean table and the decking looked like it had never been swept and there was ashtrays over flowing with cigarette ends, although it was pleasant weather I could not bring myself to sit out side and enjoy a drink. The interior was not much better, it had a very cold atmosphere and a strange aroma, which was probably due to the broken toilet in the men's facilities. My husband informed me that the toilet was full of exrment. The foor inside was as bad a the floor outside, it was covered in food and spilt drink. We ordered our food, which despite the pub being practically empty took an exceptionally long time to arrive Whilst we were waiting all we could hear was someone in the kitchen coughing up god knows what very loudly. When it finally did come out if I'm being honest it wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't worth the money and most definitely did not meet the 2 Rossett standard this pub claims to be!

This was an excellent evening. Both the food and the service were outstanding. We truly felt valued as guests. The canapés were delicious and left us with great expectations as to what was to follow. We were not disappointed. The egg and ham starter was creative, innovative and quite unique. Our main courses were of a similar excellent standard. The petit fours with the coffee were a taste sensation. Book your meal here before you can’t get a table. This chef is already a star but as word gets out this will be the place to go in Derbyshire. Competes very well with Fisher’s at Baslow. Don’t miss out. Our server added to the evening with attentive, informative yet discreet service. Thank you to all at the Bull’s Head.

My husband and I came here for our wedding anniversary very recently and we ate from the A la Carte menu. On reflection, we didn’t feel that the whole experience was worth the £200 that we paid. On arrival, we went to the bar to get drinks and I had a pink gin & lemonade and had to ask for a straw & ice- a little odd I thought, but okay. We then sat by the window with our drinks and canapés which the chef brought out and explained, before being shown to our table. Every course was brought out in a timely manner and explained thoroughly by either the chef or the waiting-on staff, I do really like this idea as we were able to really ‘taste’ our food. The food itself, personally for me I felt was mixed. The starter was finely grated potato in a watery sauce that had a very strong flavour. The main meal was under-seasoned but the beef was cooked beautifully. The dessert of vanilla & strawberry mousse was delicious and decorated with a shortbread biscuit. We were left feeling full & satisfied having enjoyed MOST of the food. When the bill came and we saw £200, we thought: “wow! Not sure that was worth that!” In my mind, I felt for £200 for two people you would expect the meal to be flawless. We have read previous reviews about the Bullshead being compared to restaurants such as Stones (in Matlock) for us, it didn’t even compete. After going to Stones you come away feeling full & satisfied having enjoyed ALL of the food and the experience, plus you don’t feel disgruntled by the price. I’m not saying for one second that The Bullshead wasn’t a pleasant experience because it was, but there are some much needed areas of improvement to make it worth the money.

A “one to watch” on the Estrella Gastro pub of the year list & absolutely well deserving of this accolade. A warm welcome was received, staff have a positive attitude and explained the menu options to perfection. A Friday lunch choice of a tasting menu, either 5 or7 flights and an A la carte too all at fixed prices, in my opinion very reasonable too. We chose the tasting menu and the chef accommodated a couple of switches, which was really appreciated. All courses were absolutely delicious and full of flavour and texture. Mark the Chef Patron is charismatic and engaging, with an exceptional eye for quality ingredients with a local or seasonal twist. We travelled over 2 hours to try this place and would definitely return, as. Few places offer such good value for exceptional food. Thanks Mark and your team.

A second visit to this restaurant confirmed our earlier judgement, Mark has created a real Peak District gem in this pub/restaurant and is keeping everything shining brightly. Our three course Sunday lunch, from a sensibly short and excellent value menu saw us taste some of the best food in Derbyshire. A beautifully sauced trout dish was followed by very tasty lamb and beef main courses, finished off with the best sticky toffee puddings we have had in some little while. A very good selection of wines are available - ours were ‘by the glass’. Friendly and professional service too. We also read that there are several ‘forage and food’ dining options on offer throughout the year, as well as short cookery courses. Go and enjoy some very special food and drink, on the doorstep of Chatsworth House.

We were staying in Holymoorside, and came to the BullsHead for Sunday Lunch. The service was very slow, and the food just about ok. At twice the price of a usual Sunday Lunch, the value was poor. I think trying to be fancy is not necessary for Sunday Lunch. There is no justification for 32 pounds for a small 2 course Lunch in a pub. I think this was the reason for empty tables with more staff than diners

We stayed over for a family celebration. The whole stay from start to finish was memorable. It was a Saturday night and the restaurant was full, no surprise with the quality of food on offer. From canapés through to dessert the tasting menu was excellent. The bread, so often disappointing, was a home cooked sourdough with whipped butters. Delicious Other courses included a baked egg with brioche, lobster tortellini, sea trout. There were no complaints. Added theatre was with dessert, a rhubarb dish made at the table and it tasted great. A second dessert of a chocolate described as chocolate with pecans, miso, sherry, and maple was the perfect end. After a great nights sleep we had breakfast. More of the home made sourdough and a bespoke cooked breakfast for all. A really great experience from start to finish

We’ve been a couple of times over the last 12 months, for both lunch and dinner menus. I’m surprised with how expensive it is when the bill comes for what you’re eating, it doesn’t warrant the price tag. The service isn’t great either, no water when requested more than once, and we found we had to go to the bar a couple of times to order drinks and rectify mistakes at the lunch menu experience. We also had to pay at the bar when we ordered the bill for some reason (we had 7 at the table and 3 children) and I waited for probably 10 minutes to pay whilst the bartender chatted with his colleague and did all he could to ignore people. I think they’re trying, but it isn’t worth the money in my opinion for what you get.

The bar food choices were limited, so looked at the restaurant menu and again very few choices. So we stuck with the bar menu. Of the limited 5 choices, I had the fish and chips and my husband had the Chicken Supreme. After 40 mins wait in a very quiet pub our food arrived. On a whole the food was good but couldn’t understand what could have caused the delay, with no apology. Jump to the deserts, I thank there was a choice of four, my husband wanted to order from the special and I wanted the brownie. Was told that the brownie wasn’t ready, what at nearly 2pm! So the choice of desert was at three, the house special, sticky toffee pudding or cheese and biscuits…really? Expensive, lack of choice and not great customer service…you could be so much better and having read previous reviews had hoped for so!

Having booked a last minute break here, we thought it would be a standard type pub b&b but boy were we wrong. Upon arrival we entered a clean welcoming pub with friendly staff and great ambiance. The rooms ( of which there were only 3) were extremely well decorated and very clean the shower was a rainfall shower with great water pressure and plenty of hot water. I must say however the coup de grace was the dinner. We opted for the 8 course tasting menu and one of us had the wine flight. From the canapés right through to the petit fours the food was excellent, well plated, the correct temperature and most of all full of flavour. The squab course and also the monkfish were particularly good. Visited as a family party of 6 at lunchtime and all had the tasting menu. This is fine dining, so everything is exquisite, with thought and attention to detail, from the canapés to the pudding. The menu will, no doubt, have changed by the time you read this, but the artichoke was impressive, the sauce under the fish v v lovely and the celeriac mash accompanying the chicken was smooth and light as a mousse. Which reminds me of the ham and eggs dish - fun and delicious. (Everything was delicious, but I felt obliged to try to say more.) The pub is shut on Mondays and Tuesdays and opens at 5pm on Wednesday. There are 3 rooms for occupancy. We had booked a room and were informed that check-in was 3pm. When we arrived just before 3pm on a Wednesday, the pub was in darkness and all the doors were locked. We had not been provided with any check-in access details. The front doorbell did not appear to work and we wandered around the building looking for any sign of life. Eventually we found the back door to the kitchen slightly ajar, which we gingerly opened and located human life. We were allowed into the building by the chef/owner Mark Aisthorpe and asked if we'd like a drink (which we were later charged for!) as the keys to our room were bent and a replacement set was being produced. Despite a log fire in the bar area, the building felt cold as if it hadn't been heated for a couple of days. We duly had a drink and waited and waited until our keys finally turned up. To access the rooms which are upstairs, you have to leave the main pub and go out and re-enter the accommodation via a different external door. The room was as per the photographs, functional and clean. We were informed that breakfast was at 9.30am!! We ate dinner from the bar menu which stops at 6.30pm. After that the choices are either one of two tasting menus which are either £35 pp or £89 pp or an a la carte menu which is £48 for two courses. We came down the following morning just before 9.30 and the door to the pub was locked so we stood shivering in the cold waiting for the lady who takes the breakfast orders to turn up - apparently the traffic was busy! The breakfast area was cold as the heat was not turned on. She turned it on when she arrived. The business man who we chatted to in the bar the previous evening was told his only choice for breakfast earlier than 9.30 was cereal which would be left upstairs on the landing for him. We paid £385 for the two nights accommodation and felt like a fee paying inconvenience rather than valued residents. We would not return.

Stayed for a night with my friend. Room amazing. Food amazing apart from my friend ordered beef which was overcooked, very chewy and had no flavour, brought this to the attention of the waiter, went into kitchen came back to table chef didn’t agree apparently it was the way my friend had asked for it to be cooked, after a lot of disagreement she was finally given a new piece of beef which as soon as it came looked totally different to the first piece, I said it looked like sirloin it was tastier and more tender, the waiter confirmed this!! We asked the waiter what time checkout and breakfast was, the reply being checkout is 11am breakfast is served between 9.30 & 11!!! Sunday morning we came downstairs 10.30 to be told breakfast finished at 9.30, explained we had a long drive, told we could have toast, we explained this is not acceptable we had paid for breakfast and expected breakfast! She disappeared into kitchen came back and said we’d have to wait until manager came in at 12pm! I asked if the chef in the kitchen was the owner of the property? Yes, so tell him to come out and we’ll speak to him, no he’s busy!! I could not believe the owner of a property would let his staff take responsibility for sorting conflict and not come out and sort it!!! I went to kitchen door and asked which was the owner he still wasn’t forthcoming, eventually when he had no choice he came out!! After a heated discussion he did agree to prepare a snack!! But for a Bed & Breakfast and restaurant of this quality you should not have the hassle we had and the owner should face up to his responsibilities!!!

I cannot recommend The Bull's Head enough. This was perhaps our fourth or fifth visit and we chose the early evening mid-week 5 course taster menu for £35 each - an absolute bargain! We were a group of 4, two of the party had never done a tasting menu before, but we were all so impressed! The menu was innovative and everything was so tasty, every single thing on every single plate was there for a reason and was delicious. The canapés were so impressive, with flavours and combinations I'd never tried before. The chefs and staff are all super knowledgeable about the dishes and answered all of our questions. What Mark has done here is amazing, go and visit, you really won't ever forget it.

Well what a fantastic restaurant! As a couple we are based in the Peak District and eat out a lot but this place surpasses any restaurant we have been to recently. We had the tasting menu which I would highly recommend. Each course wasn’t rushed and an explanation was given before each plate. We were the only people in the restaurant that night as they had cancellations but were made to feel very welcome. This is truly exceptional cooking by Mark Aisthorpe who cooked on the Great British Menu. I had looked at the reviews beforehand but the negative onee are generally from the local villages who want a place the take kids and dogs and eat cheap food in wellies there are plenty of pubs like that elsewhere. If you are looking for something a bit special then treat yourself We can’t wait to return Thank you Mark and Team

We haven’t visited The Bull for ages, so decided to give it a go. We were greeted by a friendly chap & sat in the bar area for drinks & canapés. Mark, chef patron, brought out the canapés in person, which I thought was a nice touch. We chose off the a la carte menu & then taken to our table in the restaurant as our food arrived. Our entire party thought the quality, presentation & taste of all the courses was fantastic. The food does not let this place down. What does let it down is the front of house team. As nice as they are, their service & attitude does not reflect the quality of the food served. Each course is explained when it’s served but the consistency & accuracy of information was poor. We were left to pour our own wine, which we’re more than capable of doing, but a higher end service would go far here ( to match the quality of the food). We had to ask for a refill of our water carafe. Again, no big deal, but front of house should be monitoring the tables & refreshing glasses accordingly. Our wine bottles were empty but we weren’t asked if we would like more drinks - the pub missed out on potentially another £70 worth of wine sales there! My wine glass was removed from the table when there was wine still in it! I went to finish it off & it had been whisked away without me seeing! We all agreed we would return to The Bull as the service aspects did not impact hugely. However, with these negatives addressed & the professionalism of front of house improved, the whole experience of diners would undoubtedly exceed expectations.

We dined on a Saturday evening from the A la carte menu. We received a warm welcome and sat for a drink and canapés before being shown to our table. All the service staff were friendly and attentive and the maitre d described the elements of the dishes when brought to the table. The food was very good and had some fantastic flavours. We also met Mark the proprietor chef, who was very friendly and down to earth. All 4 of us really enjoyed the dining experience.

The Bull's Head recently hosted us following a funeral service. The organising in advance of the wake was friendly and dealt with by one named person - which made it much easier. They were happy to provide a meal specific to our requirements - and this actually involved creating a new dish that suited both vegetarian and gluten free guests. On the day, the welcome we received was extremely warm and friendly (despite arriving over 40mins later than we had anticipated). The food was outstanding - hot, tasty and very comforting for a cold October Day. It was devoured by meat-eaters and veggies alike, and very much enjoyed. I can see why my mum enjoyed going there so much to drink and eat, during her life. It was also highly accessible for one guest in an electric wheelchair - this is not as common a situation as it should be. But the Bull's Head were very much sorted where this was concerned. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Great place for a special occasion. The tasting menu was delicious from start to finish. Annie, our waitress, was enthusiastic and delightful- and although new to the job, handled the lack of a cocktail and our first choice of wine with charm and grace. I think the bar manager was on holiday so suspect this was just a blip. The attention to detail on the food was exceptional. The chicken liver parfait and cheese profiterole canapés were especially delicious. The onion dish was tasty, if large for an early dish on a tasting menu, and a bit difficult to eat. I am glad I restricted myself to just a tiny taste of the yummy bread and butters as I wanted to be able to enjoy all the courses to come, and they didn’t disappoint. The scallop was perfectly caramelised, the ham and egg 2.0 intriguing (but again, quite big) with a lovely savoury hit from the Hendos. The Turbot was well cooked and I don’t think I’ve had a more velvety celeriac purée to accompany to perfectly punchy venison. By this point I was starting to fear I wouldn’t manage any more but it was great to have the break of the small theatre of Mark preparing the light and refreshing pre- dessert at the table. This gave me chance to recover and set me up for the fabulously light but rich chocolate and coffee dessert and petit fours. My fellow diners managed my bread and fudge and we all left happy, if somewhat stuffed! Well done all.

Delicious food and always great beer here. The staff are lovely and the buildings are beautifully kept both inside and out. Outside, there's a nice beer garden and a covered wooden decked area which is lovely on a summer's evening with the "Crooked Spire" of Chesterfield visible in the distance. The log burner makes the inside toasty in the colder months and the low ceilings, oak beams and pretty lighting create a lovely atmosphere. The Blue Bell Inn is definitely worth a visit.
