This is a lovely pub that serves great food. The pub is cosy and not pretentious in any way. We love the fish and chip supper on a Friday evening - great quality flaky fish in batter, superb chips, mushy peas and bread and butter - all for £19 for 2 people - what’s not to like? A great end to the working week.

Very average. Had pie, chips & mushy peas. Soggy, greasy & tasteless. Borderline terrible. Decor from the seventies. On the other hand, the service was excellent, ten out of ten in fact, the staff simply couldn't do enough to help. Nice building though, in nice surroundings & with good parking. That's it really.

We had lunch here on the first floor balcony, lovely view. Felt sorry for the serving ladies having to walk up and down but they didn't complain. Food was good and cheap but best of all they serve Staropramen, Czech lager in draught, fantastic.

My family and I visited for my brothers 21st birthday and it was just when things started to open up again. It’s safe to say, this place did a great job of making you feel welcome, and all the procedures were good. We had to leave our details for track and trace, temperature checked and social distancing, but the food was as good as ever (pie to die for!) and the staff were super friendly. One of my all time favourite pubs for food!

We used to come here very regularly when we lived locally but haven’t been for a number of years now but we’re not disappointed. Called mid week & got a table without any problems . I had the prawn salad which was substantial & delicious - see photo. Hubby had salmon and new potatoes which he really enjoyed. Finished off with a lovely liquor floater coffee. We will be back again sooner than later I hope .

What a cracking little find. The Bulls Head is off the beaten track, situated in the little hamlet of Ogden which is roughly halfway between Newhey and Denshaw a stones throw from Ogden Reservoir. We booked a meal for 6 adults and 2 children on a Sunday afternoon - the standard menu (available on their website) is supplemented by a number of specials and the standard Sunday roast offering. Our party opted for the cajun chicken wings (specials menu); garlic baguette with cheese; and the home made soup of the day (chicken on this occasion). For the mains, we chose a lamb roast; beef roast; the 'not just bangers and mash' (specials menu); chicken with stuffing in a white wine sauce (specials menu); gammon and egg; and the cheese and onion pie.The food was without exception excellent. The only real issue is the relatively unusual quirk of serving vegetables and potatoes for all the meals in bowls in the centre of the table rather than providing an individual portion for each person on their plate. That's a relatively minor (and possibly subjective) mark down on what was an otherwise brilliant dining experience.

We visit the Bulls Head regularly, as a couple, with the family and as part of a quiz team on Tuesday nights. The food is always cooked to perfection and delicious and all the staff are warm and friendly. I can recommend the homemade cheese and onion pie with yummy homemade chips and mushy peas or the sweet potato, spinach and chick pea curry just yummy! My partner Dave loves the cottage pie and the braised liver, sausage and onions. There’s a good variety of excellent choices on both the evening and lunch time menus and a great range of options for the children too! A lovely pub with home cooked food in a gorgeous setting. Went for Friday lunch. The pub and restaurant were very quiet but I recognise that the location is quite remote so not a place for passing trade. Very beautiful location. The greeting was very genuine and we had a free choice of where to sit The meals were pre prepared, I suspect some parts defrosted. We had scampi and chips and steak and kidney pie and chips The chips were awful. Just like the worst school dinner chips. Made earlier and just kept warm. Why can't they cook to order with so few customers. I think the catering staff should visit other locations and realise this standard of food is not acceptable any more. I'm so disappointed as I really hoped this would become a great place to meet friends for lunch and a chat. I won't be going again.

Went with friends twice in late October ( I don't go back to give restaurants a second chance ) both times the ambience, service and fried staff only added to the excellent meals we all ordered. Startedwith black pudding with melted cheese and mustard. Brought back memories of Oldham Tommyfield black puddings and mustard though, Mary never offered cheese. The Whitby scampi, it was breaded, hot and meaty and full of flavour. Their sticky toffee pudding rounded out a great meal. Mjy friends variously had the gammon, mixed grill, chicken tika masala and the lamb. The plates hardly needed washing.

Visited after a day out. Picking up my son and his partner, after they had done a leg of the Pennine Way. Very picturesque location, although it was going dark as we arrived, approx 5pm. Good well illuminated car park. We were greeted on entry and shown to a table in a dinning area, it was adequate if not a little cramped for four. Drinks were served at the table, with real ale available (Theakstons and Deuchars) Staff were all extremely attentive even when the restaurant started to fill up, it appears lots of people are aware of this Pub. We each shared a prawn cocktail starter, delicious. the menu is extensive, they also have the "Specials" board. My wife chose Steak and Ale pie, I chose 8oz Fillet Steak, my son a Mixed Grill, his partner had a "Specials" Stuffed Chicken, which she loved, more drinks and two desserts and three coffees later we were truly "Stuffed" All in all a very satisfactory end to day out. Been going in this pub for meals for many years. The chips have always been lovely as well as the cheese and onion pie and beef pudding. Went in for lunch recently though and ordered off the lunch menu. We asked to sit outside as it was a nice day and this seemed like too much of a request as the barmaid looked as if I asked her for the contents of the till! It was too much trouble for her so we decided to sit in the bar area. The food was served and we ordered the fish, chips and mushy peas and the small cheese and onion pie, both off the lunch menu. Unfortunately there was just batter and hardly any fish, and the pie was mainly pastry with traces of cheese. The chips tasted hard, as if they had been warmed up and the peas had an unusual taste. Don't know if the owners are away but this service and poor food is very out of character for this pub.

We found the Bull's Head by accident as we looked for a pub for a pre-match bite to eat on our way to Oldham. It feels like the road ends at the pub and it looked popular with cyclists and walkers. There is a spacious car park and the terraced garden looked very inviting, unfortunately it was drizzling on our visit. There was a bell on he bar to be rung for service, I'm not sure where the barmaid goes when she is not stood behind the bar. There is a decent selection of real ales, lagers and ciders on the bar.I had a sirloin steak sandwich with chips as a side order. The steak was cooked medium rare as requested and was very tasty. There was quite a lot of fat on the steak which is fine when the steak is visible on the plate but is not ideal if you bite into the sandwich. The chips were a little over cooked. My colleague had the hot roast beef sandwich with a side of onion rings and said it was ok but not outstanding. The service was friendly and helpful.

The Bulls Head is one of, if not the favourite pub grub place for us to go to. I've been with groups of all kinds and had an abundance of great 'home cooked' food combined with magnificent 'guest' beers (usually 3 of, may be 2). The menu range is wide and caters for all tastes. It is out of the way, you feel lost getting there even if you do get the right roads. When there, cross the stream on the right into a large car park. If that is full forget it, turn round and go another time. If you do stay you will still get food from the same menu but at the bar instead of in the restaurant area. The dinner plates are large and a portion of home made cheese and onion pie is half a plate with the other half full of veggies and potatoes or chips. (Proper ones cut in the kitchen, not poured from a frozen packet). There is a 'normal' range of sweets or puddings but, if you are like us, you never order one, you simply are too full to eat it.A starter, a main course and a couple of drinks is usually less than £25.00 for two and you leave feeling full and contented with good food at good prices and good service.

Visited with family, not for the first time so I knew what to expect with the Rag pudding... what a treat ! Spot on.The battered fish was decent enough and nicely flavoured if a bit on the small side, a long thin portion about 2-3 fingers width.Mushy peas were lukewarm, it was a cold day but its not too much to ask to serve them piping hot in a side dish. The chips arrived in a separate dish several minutes after the main plates. There wasnt many to go around considering the size of our group and another reviewer has accurately described them as 'chip scraps' lots of little burnt bits which dont appeal sorry.Overall we enjoyed our meals but not as much as on previous occasions.

We could not work out how the Gammon and Duck had been cooked but both were sadly lacking in taste. The Duck did not appear to have been seared - the skin was very pale and showed no signs of having been subjected to any direct heat. The Gammon was really juicy but, again, had lost it`s taste somewhere along the line. The rest of the meal, however, was very good and the chips were superb. We queried how the Duck had been cooked and, following consultation with the chef, we were told it had been steamed then placed under the grill. The waitress apologised profusely and suggested it hadn`t been grilled long enough. She did say that in future we could request the Duck be pan fried so it would be to our liking. It really was a shame as the lack of taste spoiled what would have been a very pleasant meal out. Will we go back again ? Perhaps, but not in the near future while there are plenty of other eating houses to be experienced.

Called in on the spur of the moment not been in the Bull for years. I ordered beef pudding and my wife cheese and onion pie, very generous portions but I was not impressed with mine especially when a bowl of chip scraps arrived. The cheese and onion was ok but my wife was not impressed with the mixed vegetables reheated?

Just come back from the Bulls Head after a spare of the moment decision to go out for an evening meal. 4 adults and 3 children aged 5yrs to 10yrs. Arriving at 7pm we ordered our food at 7:14pm as per my receipt. At this point we were not made aware of any delays. They were not particularly busy at the time as many had already been served meals. We waited for 1hr and 5mins for our meals to arrive. I wish we would of asked for a refund and gone to the chip shop. Everything was lukewarm and had a skin on the top proving it had been sat on the baymarie for sometime. The meals we had ordered were not complex nor needed an hour to cook. 3 pies were ordered 2 being the special board peppered chicken pie. To call it a pie is ludicrous. A blob of gravy with 2 small pieces of chicken with a microwaved pastry top is not a pie. Also "peppered" means to use a pepper grinder once on the plate. The "gormet" burger and I use the term loosely was so cold it did not comply with food regulations. Yes I do know this as the person eating it is a fully qualified chef. The "homemade" curry was a jarred sauce with overcooked chicken thrown in and the children's pizza was a micro 2 minute frozen Chicago pizza. The chips were reheated and well overcooked. Quite frankly a disgrace to the food industry. Add this to the incompetent staff who had to use a calculator to work out people's change and then overcharge someone for their drinks I believe the pub needs a visit from the food hygiene board and training for staff needs to be given. The female toilets smelt of sewage and we will not be visiting this establishment ever again. We visited here a few years ago and my husband got food poisoning from gone off cream. We thought we'd give it another go and it was worse than ever. Unfortunately I can not give them zero stars or I would. A letter of complaint has been written and a demand for a refund to be granted as a complimentary meal will not be accepted. Avoid at all cost.

We went last night with our friends for a quick tea after work. Upon arriving we was greeted and seated with seconds even though it was fairly busy. Throughout the night the waiter made us feel we was the only table in the restaurant. All our needs were taken care of and service was 100%. I ordered a cheese and onion pie and my 3 friends ordered peppered chicken pie of the specials menu. The portion sizes was huge great value for money. You can clearly see this is what mother used to make :-). The cheese oozed out of the pie and was to die for. The chicken in the pepper chicken pie was soaked in a creamy pepper sauce. Let's just say we left with full stomachs and a smile on our face.. Service was bang on food and was better than what mother used to make let's say we will be returning and will be recommending not many pub restaurants llike this left true good home cooked food where the staff and management care about there customers. Cheers for a great meal guys see you soon

We visit the Bulls Head three or four times a year and it never fails to deliver. The regular menu is pretty standard pub grub, but for something different, there if always plenty of choice on the specials board. Whatever you order, it's freshly cooked, plentiful and of good quality. (The chips are the best in the world!) The staff are cheerful and efficient and best of all, you leave full and feeling that you have had great value for money. Whoops, forgot to add that they serve cask beers too!

Went to the Bulls Head for late lunch 26/04/2015 and sat in the bar area which wasn't busy at all. There were a few people in there who had already eaten and the leftovers from other diners were still on the table where we had to sit. It was cleared after 15 minutes. We ordered food and our starters came reasonably quickly but we waited and we waited and we waited for the main course for 40 minutes. Another couple who had waited for 55 minutes decided to leave as they had a young baby who needed her feed and they couldn't wait any longer. The food when it arrived was delicious and piping hot but nevertheless the wait made it less enjoyable. To be honest when I went to pay the bill I was taken into another part of the pub which was the restaurant which we didn't even realise was there and that area was packed. It would have been nice to have been offered a table in there but alas we weren't. Will probably give the place one more try and sit in the dining room, maybe the service is better in there. Watch this space..!!

This pub is not actually in Rochdale or even Newhey, but in the little hamlet of Ogden on the Lancashire border with Yorkshire. Wishing to meet up as an extended family at lunchtime, we looked at the map to find an eating place about equi-distant between Manchester and Huddersfield, and we found that Ogden met the bill.On a Tuesday lunchtime the pub-restaurant in the countryside was very quiet, so we had good attention from the staff and a small dining room to ourselves. We were asked if we were ready to place our orders immediately, but we asked for time to peruse the extensive menu.We didn't have long to wait after we'd ordered. I chose beer-battered cod with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. I had the large version at £11, but they also do a smaller one for £7.50. It was excellent, and the whole group enjoyed their meals, so we agreed to meet up again at the Bull's Head on a future occasion.

One of our favourite walking areas, especially round the reservoirs, now made even nicer by the addition of a lovely beer garden at the Bull's Head - great for dog walkers like us! Also visited the restaurant Saturday evenings and had excellent service and good food. Not easy to find but popular with locals - make the effort and explore the area, many very old properties and miles of lovely countryside to explore.

We were in the Rochdale area today and a friend had recommended this pub. Well it was hard finding it up country lanes but we found it eventually at 4.20pm Sat 28th March 2015. Impressive large old pub and nicely furnished giving it a feel-good factor. I had John Smiths bitter which was chilled and as good as you can get. We were invited to eat in the restaurant section to the left which had lots of tables with huge leather high back chairs. We ordered one salmon fillet £10.90 and a steak and kidney pie £8.95 which came with very small seperate dishes of veg (not exactly what we expected) some sort of tiny shredded cabbage and cheese sauce that actually contained the most tiny bits of cauliflower (that small we didn't know it was mixed in the cheesy sauce). To save the day we got a large tray/dish of home made chips really well done. Bit greasy but very tasty and enjoyable. Salmon was good but must have been pre-cooked as the meals came within 5 minutes. You can't cook salmon in 5 minutes as we have this elsewhere and their chef says 20 mins minimum from fresh. Steak pie was ok couldnt find any kidney in in whatsoever though.Plenty of chunks of steak easily chewable. Flat top pastry that was ok too. Prices are reasonable and we enjoyed our visit. Like others have said you don't get an itemised bill just a visa receipt so make sure you check the cost before you pay. Young man working the bar was very helpful and welcoming. To gain a 5/5 they would have to give me real vegetables and a decent amount. Would go again though as country pubs like this are hard to find.

Been several times with my Dad, who lives in ShawHe likes it because the prices are good and the portions big.It makes no pretensions to being elegant fine dining, it's cheap and cheerful pub food - fish/chips/mushy peas; beef suet pudding; cheese&onion pie; steak and chips w onion rings; etcYou get a great big plateful of chips in the middle of the table to share, your own individual pot of overcooked vegetables. It is very popular, even though it's a bit out of the way, and is often busy. You can't do reservations, just need to turn-up and wait if necessary (which is excellent - how often have you turned-up at a restaurant and been told they're full, when half the tables are empty but have Reserved signs on them...) : we tend to go early so as not to have to wait.

I wanted to celebrate Christmas with my extended family and friends all together. I rang around several local pubs in the area but unfortunately none could provide a "Christmas party" before December. When I was running out of ideas a friend of mine suggested The Bulls Head in Ogden. I have been a couple of times for a quiet Sunday Lunch and always liked it so I got in touch and to my delight Peter was more than happy to accommodate 30 of us during the day. The Land Lady Marie was very welcoming and made us feel at home. I was very Impressed with the service we received, the food was superb and I was amazed that the chef managed to get all 30 meals out at the same time still hot and great quality. I do not usually write reviews but I was so made up that the Bulls Head made the extra effort to set us up an early xmas with decorated tables etc that I had to. 100% recommend this lovely, warm, friendly family run pub in the heart of a very picturesque setting. No doubt I will be returning very soon- fantastic day out!! :)

i have eaten at The Bulls head with family on several occasions, over the last month, one of which was last night. Each time i have been i have been very impressed and have NEVER had any problems with the staff or food itself. After reading a few negative reviews these were dismissed as they did not change my perception of the pub (before first visit) and did not influence my choice of food in any way. On arrival at The Bulls Head, the staff saw to us straight away even though the pub was quite busy. The staff were very friendly, polite and welcoming and we were seating straight away. I chose the cheese and onion pie (ignoring negative reviews) and i was so surprised by the meal. The portion was large but not over facing. The pie was lovely, and definitely value for money considering the size of the pie (half a round dinner plate pie). The pastry was nice a crisp and the cheese was nicely melted. A negative review i read stated that the cheese was cold and not runny, this however was not the case on my experience. The cheese was very hot and runny, and i had to wait about 10 minutes before i could eat the pie (in a good way). This was a very enjoyable meal. Before this dish i had pate for a starter the pate was soft and the toast was coked well. The pate had a lovely texture. After eating these two dishes i had no room for a dessert which in my opinion is a good thing as it showed that the meal itself was very filling and clearly appetizing. I would therefore definitely recommend this pub for a lovely home cooked meal. I do not agree with the negative reviews and i am very glad i did not take any notice of them. I would like to compliment all kitchen staff on the great food service and thank them greatly!!!! i will definitely be returning.

We had a family celebration meal booked at this pub. It is very quaint and has charm. It was fairly busy but had some empty places. Staff friendly, menu looked promising. Ordered our meals, then reasonable wait for starters which were ok, my soup was nice. After a fair wait our mains came, mine was rib eye steak with chips and mushy peas. I found the chips to be very greasy maybe over-fried because they didn't seem to have hardly any potato inside them? My steak was inedible. It was so tough I could barely cut it never mind eat it. The manager blamed the butcher, personally I would blame it on buying the cheapest ingredients!I ordered steak & kidney pie as a replacement, after another half hour they remembered me and brought it out, the rest of the party had finished by now but at least the staff didn't clear our table until I had finished my meal. The S&K pie was alright. A few of us had sweets and a couple had coffees. They don't give an itemised bill so you have no way of checking what you have been charged for or even if the person can add up?At the end if the day it is a pub that does food and as a comparison to other such pubs I think it was below average.

Fancied a good home cooked pub tea so decided to visit the Bulls Head. The pub looks like a nice cosy traditional pub, so first impressions were good. As we stepped inside it was very busy, which is normally a good sign, its popular. so taking these into account we thought we'd get a good meal. How wrong we were. We ordered our food and sat and waited and waited and waited. A waitress came over and apologised for the long wait as they were busy, we didn't mind this. However when the food did eventually arrive after nearly an hours wait we were very disappointed. Soggy pastry on the cheese and onion pie (looked like it had been warmed up in the microwave), cardboard like pastry on the steak and kidney pie. The worst was was the mixed grill, this cost £18 and we expected something huge and tasty instead we got a very dry tiny piece of what looked like the off cut off a piece of gammon, a small leathery bit of steak, a chop that was only cooked on one side and a sausage that looked like a cheap frozen sausage. When the mixed grill was brought out even the owner said it was rubbish and came back with another piece of leather (a bit thicker this time) and a couple of off cuts of fatty gammon. No steak knife was provided to cut the leathery steak with. The chips didn't look fresh and were very greasy, that greasy that there didn't seem to be any potato left in them. We did complain and money was knocked off. The food isn't the only reason we won't be returning, after complaining staff were very frosty with us.

A Wednesday evening treat ... " let's go for a meal " ... The Bulls Head at Ogden .... Not been for years . On arrival , looked quiet(ish) . Waitress sat down as we came through door ,we were going to go to the bar for a drink but were ushered to a table straight away . Very friendly girl but she didn't have any idea of what wines were on offer and kept going to ask someone . The food ... We both had the pate starter ... Ok but quite salty. My partner had beef suet pudding , chips and veg . It looked very dry but he said it tasted nice ( did say the mixed veg were a bit cold ) . I had Cajun spiced butterfly chicken breast , new potatoes and same veg ( which were also cold ) . The chicken I can honestly say was the most disgusting thing I have eaten for a long time ! It was thick , slimy inside (consistency of tofu) and in my opinion tasted like reconstituted meat ( not sure it had ever seen a chicken ) ! The waitress didn't come over at all to see if everything was alright until it was time to clear our plates . I had eaten the new potatoes and the carrots , nothing else . I told her how I felt about the chicken . It was knocked off our bill but no one from the kitchen or management came to apologise as is courteous . Needless to say we didn't have a dessert and didn't leave a tip !!! My tip would be to get a new chef !!!!!!!

Visiting the Touchstones Art Gallery we stopped for drinks and snacks. Good selection of teas, iced mocha was great and came in an interesting mason jar with a handle. Single use plastic straws were out of sync with a vegetarian menu. Good soup and bread and other dishes on other peoples tables looked good.

A delicious coffee, smooth and more than strong enough, served in a big mug was just the start I needed. Some usual choices on the Breakfast menu, from Bacon barms and toasted teacakes, through to some specials. I had the Petit Café scrambled egg special. This was eggs tossed with mushrooms, ham (or salmon), 3 types of onions and spinach, alongside a slice of toast. Healthy and delicious, and only £5.50. The Petit Café has Polish roots, as seen from the lovely, friendly lady behind the counter, cooking up a dream of a breakfast, through to the delicious Pierogi dumplings in 3 flavours. For us, these are a reminder of a lovely holiday in Krakow, and we will be back to enjoy. Add in their loyalty card and good prices, and it should ensure big things for this little café.
