I was one of a group of walkers who popped into the Hopwood Arms for drinks after a 4 mile walk around the Slattocks area of Middleton. We were welcomed and served with a smile.

Called here about 4x this year. 1st time on a Sunday and it was open mic night, 2nd time on a thurs for food but no steak or pizza, so didn't eat. 3rd time for a drink on a Wednesday and kitchen not open. Today called after a walk up the canal and I had rump steak, chips and peas with no sauce. It was very nice. A fried egg and mushroom would have been wonderful, but didn't come with that and wasn't offered on the menu. Very basic, but I enjoyed it. Nice place, so will call again

I had fish and chips, it was like a children's menu👶The fish was frozen, and it didn't taste at all. Quite disappointing food. The girl at the bar was kind, but it doesn't help with the bitter taste of fried frozen fish.

So I ate here with my friends on a quiet Friday night and I ordered the Fish Finger sandwich. Food came which was great until I noticed my fish finger sandwich was mouldy I was shocked and spoke to a member of staff they offered a replacement but no offer of a refund for ruining my evening. This is poor practice. I won’t be returning to this restaurant/pub until food hygiene and food safety standards are followed.

Both of us very hungry so stopped here on way home for traditional home cooked food. The pub felt OK, staff pleasant and prices ok. Usual Menu choices. However our food was below par to say the least. The 'tika masala' was bland and tasteless - obviously from a jar and the 'nan bread' tastless and so small it was laughable. The fish and chips shocked us both - the strangest looking 'fish' ever seen, again tasteless, overcooked and probably from farmfoods like the jar of masala sauce. Can't describe our disappointment but staff lovely and didn't want to be rude as she was so busy on her own and pleasant. Probably worst pub food ever had.

Honestly what a place! I’ve been before but never realised they had a massive back garden with two climbing frames and slides on which was great for the kids, then we decided to have some food and that was amazing aswell! The sun was on that garden the entire time! We arrived around 3-3:30pm and left just after 6pm, we met some other parents and had a laugh, few drinks, honestly what an amazing place! We’ve said we’ll be back all this summer 100% Thank you for an amazing service and afternoon!👍🏾

After going in this pub since being 18 years old, we left yesterday and my son felt quite upset and embarrassed. We came in as a group of 17 after being at my daughters cup final in football. We drove over and was still expecting food to be served as we were still a hour in time for this but they shut it off early they said when we got in. My daughter opened some pringles outside and one off the young staff in there said she could not eat them in there, we then put them away as I totally get that is their rules but they did close food off early. My son had a can of pop but missed this conversation with the girl asking to put them away because he was on the park, he walked over with the a can of pop and one of the young lads worked there went over to him snatched it out of his hands and in quite an aggressive voice said you can't have this here, I said to the lad don't snatch it out of his hands and asked to give it me I will remove it, the lad didn't even give us a chance to remove it, to what he said no and walked off leaving my son very embarrassed. I went Inside to speak to him at the kitchen and told him don't snatch it out of his hands to which he denied and told him as his mum come to me and talk to me I would of taken it straight off him. He was very disrespectful, then the man in charge popped up and told me I shouldn't just come in this pub in the summer I should be there in the winter!! In quite an aggressive tone, this is really silly, I told them we are going to leave to which they responded cocky said go get out then! So both of them starting finding it quite funny. Customer service is very disappointing in this pub, so we left straight away, the man in charge was then outside when I left so I told him how they both spoken to me was not acceptable and it's funny how he responded really nice to me when the dad's are about, his tone had totally changed now and the younger lad also said nothing! This pub has changed and also following one of the dads into the toilet asking what they are doing is also not acceptable!! How embarrassing!! Bond with your punters is a bit of advice not go at them because it's our money what keeps the place going. Really disappointed and embarrassed I recommend this pub for the football team to come over to. We then moved onto another pub which we had a great day and lovely food.

Disgusting service the staff really need to work on their customer skills. My son had a can of pop in the beer garden who is only 11 years old, I didn't even know he had opened this and wouldn't of let him as we know your not allowed to bring in your own pop, anyway the young staff spotted him marched over and grabbed the pop from him and quite aggressive said don't drink that in here! I asked the lad to not snatch from my lad and to speak to me as I'm his parent over 16 years old and I would of dealt with this by taking it from him or putting it in the bin. There were 17 of us which came from a football match with the kids, we did come in to eat but they stopped food early aswell. After the lad snatched from my son I went to see a manager and spoken to the young lad first and told him he should not snatch off a young but he wouldn't listen, he spoken back to me not nice then the man in charge shouted at me that I should be coming in the pub in the winter not just when the sun is out and said something about the colour of my skin, the way the both of them spoken to me was disgusting! I told him we are leaving and got the rest of our group. When I was leaving the man in charge was outside, I said to him I get his rules but you can't have your staff snatching from children, he didn't ChecK his cctv, I think he should and will see exactly what others seen. His tone was much nicer at this point though but I think it was the fact that the guys who was with our group was there then, so he totally changed how he spoken to me, my husband did tell him but what does he expect the way he treated his son and me! The young lad came out and again she dbt help himself, the pub is full of young staff and him as a boss letting them disrespect people is not what I would want for my kids. The table at our side who we didn't even know also witnessed him snatching and said it was disgusting what just happened. He never asked for my Email like he has responded below to another bad review, he was just utter rude and got told in the end by a man which he deserved after being rude and cocky to a woman. This pub years ago was so friendly but now you can feel the tension coming in, such a shame. Check your cctv and try welcoming your paying customers who keep your business running with a smile!!! I actually feel sorry for your young staff!!

Booked a party here for my 2 children's joint birthday celebrations after inviting well over 25 plus people upon arrival was told we was allowed 1 and a half hours for food after spending well over £350 plus we then have to move to the beer garden because football is on and the gentlemen in the pub who is really rude to say he will be losing money bearing in mind well over £200 plus was spent on just drinks alone aswell I ended up watching the football in the beer garden because of the rudeness didn't feel comfortable to sit inside the pub after this treatment I personally will always go with the beach in hollingworth lake such a better service never again will I plan a party and bring someone this much custom to be treated like this not child friendly in the slightest don't interact with the children at all just after your money and a poor atmosphere so don't fall for the niceness over the phone like we did as it changes on the actual day after all your hard planning

The hopwood arms has certainly been turned around since being taken over. It is good to see a local pub trying and succeeding in bringing life back into what was a big empty pub. Great food, quiz, live music, sport and karaoke make the Hopwood a great place to be. It's just going to get better as they are introducing authentic stone baked pizza to the menu. I really wish I hadn't visited this pub for lunch. What a mistake. I hadn't been there for 40 years, and won't be going back. Fair's fair, the two gammons ordered were ok, if you ignored the chips and peas. The "homemade pie" was atrocious. There were 6 of us, 5 adults and a baby. We ordered our food and waited. We waited for 45 minutes. The food was average. Two orders of fish and chips, very small fish- ( £12.50 per person) One chicken burger , the 'crispy' coating very hard, again a very small piece of chicken. (£11.50) Cheese & onion pie, chips, peas- £12.50, 'pie was mushy' Jacket potato with beans (£6.50) was 'okay' The lasagne with garlic bread was ' nice' All things considered we would not eat here again. There was no one else in the place so not sure why service took so long. No one came to ask how our food was and were we satisfied.

Usually a fantastic pub, and have been going for years with family. Under the old management it was the heart of the community with everyone feeling comfortable in any situation. Knowing this, we expected the same community pub even under the new management. A couple of weeks ago I began going with friends (we’re 17 a few weeks away from 18) playing pool and buying soft drinks. The last time we visited I bought myself a drink and another one of my friends. My other two friends didn’t want a drink at this specific time but were intending to buy one later on. It was before I paid for the two drinks that we were then made to feel unwelcome with the sentence “it isn’t a youth club” by the lady behind the bar. Had we been loud and out of hand I would have expected this remark, however for a group of four sat talking this was unnecessary and unwelcoming. Instead we gave up on the idea of playing pool, i did not take the drinks and we left. It saddens me to say that unfortunately the Hopwood arms is no longer the community pub it once was and we will not be using there services again.

We often drop in for a pint or 2 after a walk, whether it be a muddy walk or dry. Landlady and landlord are always very welcoming. Food is served INSIDE the pub which is definitely signposted at the door to the garden. And as any decent pub or restaurant they will not tolerate drugs on the premises or underage drinking. Bar staff and waiting on staff are very polite. Evening entertainment is always fantastic which is a bonus. And the food is delicious. Definitely worth popping in if your passing. Or if you want an hr or 2 out with the kids and/or dog/s in the holidays it's great. Situated just off the canal 5*

My brother and his wife visited me from Co Durham and we called at this pub for lunch. The menu was limited but we all found something we could enjoy. I ordered Beer Battered Fish with the trimmings costing £11.95. When the fish arrived it looked a bit overcooked but as I ate it I realised that it was fish which I could have bought very cheaply from Iceland, and definitely not Beer Battered. My sister in law ordered Steak and Kidney Pie, this arrived rather obscured by the pile of garden peas, but as she moved the peas she discovered the smallest collapsed pie which had very little meat and was mainly gravy. The cost of this was about the same as the above described fish. My brother ordered the Beef burger. When this arrived it looked quite spectacular. The presentation was very good. Unfortunately the burger, according to my brother, tasted like a burger you would buy at a fairground or at a burger van at a car boot sale. Again this cost £11.95. When the waitress came to ask if all was ok we told her we were disappointed and she said thank you. No one came to see what the problem was. We did eat the food as we were all hungry but the only good thing about the meal were the peas. The chips were cold. The pub is in a lovely position, the décor s very nice, the bar staff were friendly and helpful. The food completely lets it down. How can they describe the fish that I had as Beer Battered ??? How can they charge top dollar for very low quality food?? One star for decor and friendly staff.

The company who owns this pub needs to look it quickly before it's to late. I have been in when it did have a manager & it was bursting with nice food & lots going on. To the company get it sorted out before it's to late Christmas is coming you could miss a lot of trade. Long Live a Nice Pub. 😡

Will not be going back. Absolutely terrible. Firstly, order forgotten then when asked about it after waiting 45 minutes told chef cooking it. Came out 1 hour after ordering and the chicken was covered in cold bottled peri peri sauce, overcooked/microwaved chicken which was rock hard and inedible. Needless to say, took it straight back and requested refund. Dont think there was a chef on, more like in house cooking attempt. Never again.

Visited for drinks - planned on having a couple but ended up staying all afternoon. Due to Covid restrictions it was outside only - no problem as the weather was great and the pub has a huge beer garden. Was well looked after with table service and attentive staff who were on hand almost immediately after I had finished each drink. Definitely recommend. Have read a couple of negative reviews over the last few weeks - whilst this is of course the right of those individual posters to place them it does not match with my experience, which has always been excellent. I think maybe people need to appreciate this has been a difficult time for the hospitality industry and people are doing their best.

3 minutes agoNEWI am leaving a bad review for the Hopwood arms due to the fact that I had booked a late birthday night in a nice beer garden which was confirmed by the Hopwood arms for Wednesday the 28th of April for 7pm, I booked a couple of weeks ahead and they even confirmed it..it wasn't until Wednesday the 28th daytime that my girlfriend noticed on the Facebook page that they posted 5 days prior to the 28th that they were only opening Thursday to Sundays, I had no message or phone call to say that my booking was cancelled or affected.. I was also trying to get hold of them through phone call but there was no answer. I did find somewhere else to drink but not for very long so I feel very disappointed by the Hopwood arms and definitely don't recommend there business as most businesses should let people know if they've made a booking with them. Additional note: I did leave a review on Facebook but since I posted I've noticed they've took all their reviews down from Facebook.

Turned up with my sons to be greeted with the most abrupt woman telling us point blank no tables and nor will there be any times for the rest of the evening. This was at 4PM. The manager then appeared with the same kind of rude attitude asking if I had booked a table. When I told him no I couldn't get through he said he was far too busy to take calls. I explained to him that I couldn't get through by phone as the mailbox was full. He said he was too busy to empty that too. There was no people skills between the two of them whatsoever. I understand they was busy but that doesn't warrant a bad attitude. Especially in the hospitality industry.

We had booked a table. When we arrive there was nothing to indicated what the process was. Should we wait to be seated. Were we to get drinks from the bar or wait for table service. In the end the barmaid waved a hand vaguely in the direction of a table with a reserved notice on it. It turns out you had to order from the bar (drinks and food) and hunt out the menus ourselves. The menu was reduced to normal and there was little vegetarian choice or much choice at all really. We all ordered and then came the wait. Thirty minutes in and after it seemed someone who ordered after us was served before us I asked how much longer it would be. The barmaid said she would ask the kitchen. It looked to me like the order had been missed. It was another 10 minutes before we were served. Chips were missed from the lasgne, a request to swap fries for homemade chips was missed and my steak was served on a griddle so hot the medium rare steak ended well done and all the onions were black. The food was just OK and 50% dearer than say the Wilton Sizzling Pub.At no point did I feel any of the staff had any interest at all in how we were enjoying our visit. I won't be going back.

Not bad food but getting served at the bar is a nightmare unless you’re a local. Have walked out due to terrible service but it’s close to home so keep going back. Don’t expect a smile but beer is good

Well, it’s a big fat zero for customer service. Decent food but this place doesn’t deserve your custom. Spent 10 minutes today watching them fanny about with the card reader then they serve a couple of locals and wander off again. How you can possibly expect people to come in and be ignored is beyond me. Walked out in the end without ever getting served and won’t bother coming back.

To be fair this place is kind of our local. We'll come for a couple of beers n food or just beer. Staff are friendly and to get served promptly with a smile n chat. Food is pub grub at its best. Always bring visiting family (Scotland n Ireland) here. Just had a steak, always have a steak, it was gorgeous! Juicy succulent, tasty. Jimmy n staff keep up the good work guys x

My fiancée came here on Friday night with friends and family on the night before our wedding. Everyone loved the food, the atmosphere and the staff were friendly as well. Yesterday we went back on our way home and all I can say is it was a great idea. The food was lovely, I highly recommend the cheese n onion pie, my wife had the lamb shank and loved it. The staff were friendly, there was plenty of seating and you can sit outside as well on a nice day and enjoy the sun, the view of the canal and barges at the back as well. This is great British pub grub and worth every penny.

Not a pub I frequent a lot, but had an hour to kill mid afternoon and called in. Food was very reasonable priced and exceeded expectations. I have known the long term landlord and family for probably 20 years but not somewhere I normally think of. We ordered three light bites and all tasty and home cooked feel. Outside has large nice kept beer garden with two kids climbing frames and will definitely be going back when we got kid. Not flash n posh but friendly feel with good food! We’ll be back !

Came here for food for a birthday. We was group of 10 people we all ordered one after each other explained all come out same time that we was together. Some people had there starters on time rest had to wait 20 mins after 1st ones. Some of mains came before the starters. The burgers were over cooked. Some asked for the steaks where not cooked to what was asked and well over cooked. Some of the meals went to the wrong table. The stakes where taken back to be redone. There was long wait over 40 mins for some of the mains to come out. We exlained this said we was unhappy where offered some desserts. When we asked birthday came to come out they brought it to the wrong table. We asked for knife and plates napkins for the cake. The plates looked like where not cleaned properly. Food is over priced for what you get. Came while a go food was nice homemade chips onion rings now it's all changed. It was good value for money. Not it's not that great very disappointed the drinks are overpriced to. I can understand that it was busy for a Sunday but it's a pud it's always busy but you still expect good food and service.

Very nice food and very nice atmosphere. However, when we came into the pub for our food, the television was very loud and couldn't hear ourselves speak. Although, I understand if the television was turned up because of the football was on. But overall, this is a very nice place to come!!

I arrived earlier than expected in Rochdale for a business meeting the next day and was looking for accommodation on a wet and windy Tuesday night. I had assumed it would be easy to find somewhere, but I was very wrong!! I went in past the Hopwood at 10pm for some advice and spoke to Jimmy (the boss) and his daughter and they couldn't have been more helpful. He went on the internet for me and eventually after 5 or 6 phone calls was able to find me somewhere to stay, much to my relief. They went way above and beyond the call of duty and both are a credit to their establishment (and the pint was good too!!!). Thank you very much, you saved my bacon on a very stressful evening!!

This is a lovely pub that serves great food. The pub is cosy and not pretentious in any way. We love the fish and chip supper on a Friday evening - great quality flaky fish in batter, superb chips, mushy peas and bread and butter - all for £19 for 2 people - what’s not to like? A great end to the working week.

Visiting the Touchstones Art Gallery we stopped for drinks and snacks. Good selection of teas, iced mocha was great and came in an interesting mason jar with a handle. Single use plastic straws were out of sync with a vegetarian menu. Good soup and bread and other dishes on other peoples tables looked good.

A delicious coffee, smooth and more than strong enough, served in a big mug was just the start I needed. Some usual choices on the Breakfast menu, from Bacon barms and toasted teacakes, through to some specials. I had the Petit Café scrambled egg special. This was eggs tossed with mushrooms, ham (or salmon), 3 types of onions and spinach, alongside a slice of toast. Healthy and delicious, and only £5.50. The Petit Café has Polish roots, as seen from the lovely, friendly lady behind the counter, cooking up a dream of a breakfast, through to the delicious Pierogi dumplings in 3 flavours. For us, these are a reminder of a lovely holiday in Krakow, and we will be back to enjoy. Add in their loyalty card and good prices, and it should ensure big things for this little café.
