The Bull Pen in Hertsmere

Great venue, but staff were not particularly attentive and my English breakfast was mediocre. I will go back, but today I was disappointed.

The food served was dull and tasteless I ate this appalling toasted cheese and ham panini predominantly because I was hungry. I complained to the manager who told me that as I had eaten three quarters of my food there was nothing he could do. I wish they had a measure for tasty delicious food instead of how much uneaten food is left on the plate. I am a local and have vowed never to eat there again. Also my unappetising sandwich and a tea cost more than £15.00. All I can say is lesson learned.

Veggie options were poor,I guess it's been there for years, needs updating!

Our plates were cleared but no question as to whether we wanted anything else or not. And to top it off, we were given the bill even though we never asked for it! My partner and i felt absolutely disrespected and so unwelcome it was unbelievable. Considering that we spent £40 of our hard earned money for just two mint teas and 2 breakfast im cant believe that we were treated like this. It felt like they thought we were going to run away. We did want to speak to the manager about this but she was having her lunch so we didnt want to disturb, hopefully she gets to read this. Its a shame. We live in the village and this is how our community treats us.

Lovely location nice spot for lunch would 100% recommend. Plus there are a few other shop there well worth a visit.

Ordered a granola and honey bowl asked for some blueberries and they replied they had no fruit at all (side note: they are next door to a greengrocer!), suggesting I go over to a fridge where I could buy a banana which they would cut up for me. I thought it very odd for a popular breakfast restaurant at 10am on a Saturday to have no fruit.

A great meeting & socialising place, the restaurant is a good size with lots of space, the food is served speedily without compromising quality. Well run place with friendly staff ready to help. Definitely worth visiting.

Very cold day, so a welcome lunch. Paninis & baigels delicious. A portion of chips a must!

Really great spot for brunch or lunch. Good parking out the front, a few little local retail shops to peruse in the Battlers Green Farm area. Quite a big cafe, with a huge choice of food. Great coffee, great service and nice and warm. They dont allow dogs inside but do have an outside area (with heaters) if you want to take your pooch.

The flat whites were bitter because the coffee was scalded by the boiling milk. The delicious Victoria Sponge was served on a side plate with a fork but no serviette. When we paid at the end, the fact we weren't asked about our experience just confirmed that customer satisfaction has no importance at this Tearooms.

Great place for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. Staff were good and the food arrived quickly. It was hot and tasty. Competitively priced.

It was a treat, the whole experience was outstanding, the staff, food, and atmosphere was great. It is so clean. It was quite busy, yet still very relaxing and exciting. Parking, right there. Little shops to go and look at. Go and enjoy. Regards, Arnold Aarons

Excellent food and service. Sitting outside under the heated umbrellas we enjoyed a peaceful and delicious, traditional English countryside brunch. Not cheap. Very noisy inside (jam packed with happy, chatty customers). But otherwise, highly recommended.

It's just another great place to go and have afternoon tea at, but they do not accept bookings for tables there and this also applies to that place even though they can get totally packed out at the weekend, yet more people want to go there at the weekends as well.

so we re visited the bull pen 4 of us had v nice lunch BUT watch out,unless your read the bottom of the menu you will get charged service charge on top of your bill ...which in ones opinion should be discretionary,you should not pay it if the service is bad and if so see mngr and refuse the payment,in fact by removing the automatic service charge the customers tip could be worth more....think bout it.

Served a BLT where the the toast was burned to an obviously carcinogenic degree. One side of the bread was more burned than the other and the cook had placed that on the inside of the sandwich hoping I wouldn't notice. I understand that standards across the board have dropped in the last few years but I paid £10.50 for that sandwich so I was expecting better.

This place is so popular, mainly because it's a reliable staple in the community. The decor is homely and wholesome, and the food is basic but delicious. Prices are quite high, but you can sit and chat without being harassed to move on.

Really lovely tea room for luncheons, tea and cakes. Located in well set out selection of stores in a farm court. (Nothing icky to step in!) With good parking. Lovely service, good small meals selection - panini, sandwiches, baked potatoes etc. And cakes to bin the diet for! Well worth a visit. Lunch 2 people incl 1 glass wine and service £38.

Fantastic breakfast but had to keep moving chair forward so people cld pass maybe rearrange the seating. Otherwise I wld definitely recommend the place

The best thing to have here is their cakes. They have a fruit meringue which looks like an Eton mess. Best I have ever had...

This place has a lovely feel. I met some friends for lunch and had the soup and sandwich. Helpful staff, but a little busy. Plenty of parking. Clean toilets.

Bull Pen Tearoom is independent and family owned place at Battlers Green Farm, Common Lane, Radlett, WD7 8PH The place is definitely a hidden treasure Average spend per person £18 I was there with family friends for a brunch .. there is good parking space at the location.. We received a warm welcome by friendly staff . From the moment you step inside, you're transported to a cozy haven of rustic charm. The ambiance, complete with wooden beams and a tranquil farm view, sets the perfect stage for a relaxing tea time. The menu offers a delightful array of tea, breakfast, lunch menu for every age ... They have a special kids menu .. and selection of freshly baked cakes We ordered jacket potatoes.. I ordered chicken jacket potatoes and rest ordered tuna jacket potatoes.. cam with side of salad and yumm it tasted delicious We did not had space of cakes so ... Here's to many more years of delightful meals and warm welcomes

well a matter of principal.we know the food is good bit pricey but good.but how well can you trust the prices on their menu on the net.we just wanted 2 americano coffee with hot milk internet menu £3 55 on site charged £3 75 yes i know its only 25p more BUT i wonder how accurate their full menu is on internet prices compared to their menu they have on site for the waitress said thats the price we charge on menu.makes you think........if they changed prices then keep the menu right on the net so it reads the same on site,

Good food, fairly good service. Nice ambience

We were visiting friends and needed some lunch before heading home. We parked up just after 12 on a Wednesday. There was a queue out of the door, but we were seated quickly on a table for 2 inside. While quieing I noticed that they had chicken schnitzel chips and salad as a special. When the waitress came to take our orders, we did indeed order the schnitzel, but just with salad for me. It was a nice portion, hot and tasty. Hubby ordered a chocolate cake with ice cream. It was a huge portion. He asked if he could take the rest home, which indeed he did. Not the cheapest lunch, but very good atmosphere, nice, friendly waitresses, great parking and some lovely shops to wander about in before or after you eat.

Lovely food and location. The service was quick and friendly. There wasn't really an atmosphere... More wasp batting than anything as we were seated outside in the covered area with our doggy. The menu choices are good and everything is locally sourced. The traybakes are to die for and the bull pen tea is my fave with a gorgeous cafetiere of coffee. My daughter had the kids afternoon tea which was perfect for her and at £11.50 really good value.

Group afternoon tea for nearly 40 people which was very efficiently dealt with by helpful friendly staff.

Food is average and well overpriced! The service is awful! Lots of miserable staff who don‘t provide any service and have zero customer service skills. 12.5 % service charge automatically added to the bill, what a joke and not only that there is no service as mentioned, it’s awful! We won’t be returning!

Great choice, friendly staff, comfortably tables. When busy there can be lengthy wait for a table but this wait is always worth it.

The food and atmosphere is good. However there is not enough staff to enable the management to open 50% of the restaurant. Very petty about changing items on the menu.

Service is a bit slow so much staff but I wouldn't say they are attentive. All day breakfast is served We swapped 2 eggs with sausage but only hot 1 sausage which I thought was a bit cheeky other than that lovely restaurant and great food.

Been a few years but after visit last week, Vegan options disappeared. Vegan sausages no more. Disappointing. Food quality is poor and options about as boring as it can get. Staff are superb.

We went with our daughter her partner our son and one of our granddaughters for Sunday lunch. Got there at 12, no queue, we were given a table that held 6 of us. Quite a large menu, everything from breakfasts, sandwiches right through tp salads and cakes. 4 ordered buckriebit with extra sausages or bacon, our grand daughter had a breakfast bap, I had a huge ham salad with a side of avocado 🥑. Various drinks and hubby, son, and grand daughter had cakes which again were huge, we had to ask for doggy bags as they could not finish them. Lovely friendly waitress. By the time we left about 1.30 long queue waiting to be seated, plenty of parking, this was our 1st visit we will definitely be back soon

Lovely Sunday lunch with our children, great menu something for everyone great portions and lively friendly staff, 4 had buckreib with extras, grand daughter had breakfast bap and I had an amazing ham salad 🥗

Disappointing. A tea room that should be a restaurant with one bottled beer on the menu and a VERY unimaginative menu. I want to yawn at this point! Don’t get me wrong, the food was “nice” - but that was it. It was super noisy and I was defo not wearing enough carats to feel comfy here. What a missed opportunity given the space and location!

Ordered two lattes, asked for a menu to look at and when the waiter brought us our drinks he took the menus and threw them in the bin? Went to pay and noticed there was an additional 91p service charge for walking 30 foot with our drinks, obviously I asked for that to be removed. Can’t smoke outside either. Off the beaten track so you have to make the effort to go here so maybe I should have charged them for the petrol I used to go there. Won’t be going back.

I visited the Bull Pen tea rooms for lunch today and had a very unpleasant experience. Staff were rude and unprofessional felt like they avoided eye contact to provide service, there was at one point 4 to 5 staff arguing amongst themselves who would take orders. Staff appeared unfriendly no pleasantries. Had to keep leaving my table to ask for service. There was one polite young blonde haired guy who was helpful I complained to him, what is wrong with staff attitude. The 2 stars are for the lovely food however at nearly £50 for x 2 lunches very poor service couldn’t wait to leave and won’t return. Feel so sad by the whole experience.

I used to live by this place and have known it for years. Its always been a destination but had thought (many years ago) it was overrated. No longer!! This place has had a transformation is now a gem! Great food, great service and a unique location. A super place to meet up with friends.

This restaurant is always busy the food is always served nice and hot by pleasant staff in particular Katie who is a very pleasant waitress and always gets your order correct so when in Radlett don't go anywhere else.

Really rude customer service. The waiter told me he doesn’t have time to explain the menu or tell me what is vegan because he is busy with the Sunday lunch orders. The vegan options are outrageous. Beans on toast or a side salad.

Great place to eat and drink after a morning shopping at Battlers Green.

We were having a walk and called in for a coffee. We waited ages to be served although there was a lot of staff on, often milling around the 'welcome' station. Anyway, we drank the coffee, which was nothing special, and then asked for the bill. About 10 minutes later when we were getting a bit fed up, we went to the welcome station and asked if we could pay. It was almost £8 for two coffees, which - even for the South - seemed a bit steep but it was only when we got outside that we noticed there was a 12.5% service charge on the bill - for coffees! And no service to speak of!

The sausages I received were raw inside, the chips cold and cream out of date

Staff were lovely but breakfast for 2 cost us over £40. Have seen better in a cafe for what we paid. The sausages were dried out and hard. The mushrooms were more boiled than fried. In general it was fine but very over priced. £8 for two coffees was too steep. The farmyard outside has boutique shops which are all slightly pricey anyway but at least you get quality in those shops.

Very disappointed with the cream tea. We was given a tea spoon of clotted cream and a tea spoon of jam for 2 scones. When we asked for more the manager was quite rude and argued that was enough and if we wanted me we had to pay. It wasn’t paying that was the problem, we didn’t get enough cream for 2 scones to start with. Very disappointed, will not be returning anytime soon!!!

Went for lunch on Monday. The tables inside were full so we decided to accept a table in the covered area outside. This area is extremely disappointing. The flooring consisted on fake grass which was absolutely filthy - bits of food and all sorts of other dust and litter. The seating consists of wooden tables and chairs and plastic tables and chairs. This area brings the whole standard of the restaurant right down. We asked to be moved inside. The inside part of the restaurant was lovely. The food was good but overpriced and the service charge a rip off.

Would have rated this place as five out of five as food great although a bit overpriced. However SERVICE CHARGE automatically added at 12.5 %. The service charge should not automatically be added and in my opinion 10 per cent is the norm. For 2.5 % above the norm and the automatic nature of the service charge this place has shown their priorities. I do hope more complaints about this will be placed on trip advisor so the owners will think again and treat their customers properly. By the way the service and staff were friendly but that is not the point.

The Bull Pen, does what it does best which is to provide a meeting place, a venue for all walks of our community. From the wealthy down to the poor, from the academic to the not so, without prejudice. Could it be more... honestly there is always room for improvement but on the whole it delivers a very good service with the few staff that keep it going. Mum's and toddlers, the elderly, and the disabled are all welcome here. It is both the melting pot and at the same time the crucible to the community surrounding it. Thank You .

A beautiful gem and excellent food. There cakes are to die for.

My wife and I were unable to celebrate our 80th birthday's due to covid so we booked the Bull Pen for a joint belated tea party. My wife made the arrangements with Mary, the general manager who was extremely helpful. On the day, our 42 guests were greeted by the incredibly professional staff with a glass of prosecco and the escorted to the tables. The tea was amazing and so plentiful. All our friends commented on the freshness of the sandwiches scones and delicious mini pastries and macarons. They gave extras to the children and made everything wonderful. Big thanks to Mary who organised Leanne and Vasy who looked after us on the day and not least the chef Gabriel and his assistants.

What a great little area with shops and this place which had a lovely breakfast. If I'm in the area I'll be coming back for more.

Soup and sandwich a very good deal and soup only comes with a lovely warm roll. Chips are on the dry side
