this was repeat visit after a very pleasant and enjoyable experience, we were looking forward to a nice night out. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The food was not as described o the menu they claimed to triple cooked chips they were not the onion rings were cold and the steaks were not cooked right. when this was mentioned to the waitress she could not be more uninterested. when it came to paying the bill i asked the 20% gratuity to be taken off because of the bad service and explained the reason why they just giggled when i walked away. this was a total waste of a night out.

It's a lovely pub, we're local & visit often. Unfortunately, we had a very poor experience of Sunday lunch & very poor customer service. We ended up overcharged, mis-sold lunch items & waiting over an hour for half our party's lunch order. So disappointing & we were made to feel like it was our fault with no apology or compensation. Really hope service improves so people don't hesitate to visit, need to keep this asset to the community going!

Picked this pub at random as a half way point between myself and my partner. Mainly chosen from the menu as she is vegetarian and The Bull Inn had good choices. So happy that we picked this place. Such a friendly reception, with superb food. I had their trade mark burger. Obviously home made and lovely. My partner went for the mushroom burger which was equally superb. We weren't hurried at anytime and the afternoon flew by. The car park is tiny but they clearly tell us that on the Web site and there is plenty of street parking. I'm looking forward to revisiting. I reckon the Sunday roast will be a thing of beauty 😁😁

I guess the warning signs were there - only one table in the restaurant occupied at 7.30pm on a sunny Saturday in July! Having been shown to ours - nicely positioned by a window - the first and very obvious thing we noticed was the overpowering stench of sewage! We asked to be moved - and were - well there was nearly the whole of the place to chose from! (We had perused the menu on-line in advance so had a pretty good idea of what was on offer - or at least we thought we did!) The menu appeard to have been severely curtailed with no rump of lamb or even a steak to be seen. We questioned this & were promptly brought other menus which now included a choice of ribeye or sirloin steak but no lamb & different starters. Orders placed & wine ordered, we settled down to celebrate the birthday of one of our party of 3. The duck paté was adequate tho bought in rather than home made & served with bread rather than bread & butter. The baked camembert was excellent - very tasty with the addition of thyme but the prawn cocktail was a travesty! Plump, pink morsels had been reduced to dried and shrivelled maggots by being badly thawed in a microwave. They came piled on a single outside leaf of lettuce, in a pool of Marie Rose sauce, accompanied by bread & again not bread & butter, as per the menu! Why is 'sourdough' the only bread offered in so many restaurants? This version was a putty coloured coarse & dry crumb in a rock hard crust - very unappetising! We had ordered 1 ribeye, medium/rare; 1 sirloin, medium/rare & 1 sirloin very rare. What we got were 1 ribeye which was apparently acceptable but 2 sirloins which were both beyond well done - to the point that they were almost white internally & crumbly but with no external searing! Seriously! I have no idea how any chef could achieve this degree of ineptitude. The fries were some of the best we had ever tasted - really hot & crispy if a little over-salted. The wine too was very good. This whole experience was saved only by the energy, enthusiasm & willingness of the Lancastrian lass who served us. She's wasted here. Word has cleary got out - except to us, obviously - that this place is not worth a visit as when we left at about 9.30pm it was still almost empty. It is such a pity to see an establishment which once thrived, against the odds, reduced to this. We won't be back.

Came for drinks & a bite to eat. Ordered (& paid for) drinks first. Confusion as young server trying to finish one order whilst doing ours so another girl took over. A few minutes later we ordered food separately after settling in: 1 roast & 1 scampi/chips £62.70! Thought this was a bit pricey so asked why. Girl explained it included the drinks too. I told her we’d already paid for the drinks. She said she’d get manager to come out to our table to sort refund. Waited a while, went back in to see what was happening, waited some more, then saw our food coming out so went back to table outside. Had to wait for cutlery - condiments brought to us first then another minute for cutlery. Food was really tasty actually until half way through meal I chewed down on a big bit of plastic wrap in the cabbage/greens. We’re not having much luck with this place, are we?! Was just about to take plate in to show manager but she was on her way out to see us about the drinks refund. She took plate with her so didn’t get chance to take photo. We went back inside to sort this long-awaited refund which took a further 10 minutes to issue as I had to prove we’d paid twice and manager was having difficulty with the POS system. A brief apology was given for the plastic in my food but no mention of a discount or refund for that. Or at the very least a profuse apology. To be honest, I just wanted to get out of there at this point instead of complaining further as it was overall a rather unpleasant experience. Chaotic management of staff. Plus the plastic wrap in food. Shame. Seemed a lot of hassle just to get refunded for a couple of drinks. Plus, £23.50 for scampi & chips is a bit much. A good roast (without the plastic) maybe, but not a pub staple such as scampi & chips. Poor show guys. Treat your customers better.

Just wanted to leave a review to say food was fabulous and how lovely everyone was. We were walk-ins on a Sunday - managed to get fitted in, ordered our meals, starters arrived and then we had the phone call to go collect smallest family member as he was poorly at Scout Camp. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful - they packaged our meal up and wished us well. Just so lovely and helpful. We had a managed to eat our starters in-house and they were delicious.

This pub has a nice interior, smart but also warm. We both had fish and chips. The service was very good, quick and friendly. The fish was good, the chips were ok, the mushy peas were a bit cold and too much like a soggy purée for my liking. The food was good without making us think we must go back again. The only real downside was the noise level, with some customers, who appeared to be well-oiled, shouting their heads off. Hopefully they’re not regulars.

I have wanted to try this gastro pub for months and after a long I was not disappointed! We went for lunch and both had the turkey dinner with all the trimmings at £19.95. Beautifully presented and very tasty. Ok the roast potatoes were not the best but I wouldn’t like to have to present roasts within a few minutes! The turkey, gravy, pigs in blankets, parsnips, sprouts and Yorkshire were all first rate. Even though very full we decided to share a portion of the delicious sticky toffee date pudding with honeycomb ice cream. It arrived as a double portion and we ate every scrap! No more food today! Excellent fast and very friendly service. We shall be back. Recommended! Thank you for a brilliant lunch.

Last year had a nice meal here and thought we would visit again as the COVID measures are easing - this time around it was very disappointing - the pate starter was sliced so thin there was hardly enough to cover the three small thin slices of toast. The main courses were all very disappointing- all the food was served lukewarm. The food arrived plated and the vegetables consisted of 2 tiny pieces of broccoli head - a tiny carrot smaller than a child’s little finger and a couple of small hard bits of parsnip - the roast potatoes were soggy and cold. The gravy was cold and gloopy. We didn’t complain at the time as we were with other people and didn’t want to make a fuss. There was a very limited menu and no wine list was available due to COVID?? We just ordered our usual drinks but have to say when we got the bill we thought they were well overpriced. In fact for the amount and quality of food we had it was overpriced and basic. Service was slow and amateur - shame but we will not return

What a gorgeous pub. Great staff and a warm and very welcoming atmosphere. It was busy and so booking for the restaurant is essential. The car park is a bit snug and quite tight to get in so be warned if you have a huge car! The Sunday menu was interesting and the food plentiful. There were proper linen napkins too. We got given a carafe of water on arrival without having to ask for it with cucumber in it which was a nice touch. We shared a veggie platter as a starter and ordered some olives alongside. Bizarrely they had run out of olives and we were told it would be removed from the order which was fine. I didn’t have the Sunday roast and two of us ordered guinea fowl instead. Everyone else had veg as part of their meal but ours came with just guinea fowl and mash which was a little disappointing. It was a bit off when you get veg with some meals and not others and I wish I had been told when I ordered. Desserts were interesting. I had affogato which I love and have often in other restaurants and is usually a generous portion of ice cream. However this was a small scoop and did not compare to the other generously proportioned desserts. The toilets were on the ground floor and were immaculate with paper towels and Molten Brown toiletries too. The meal was very reasonably priced however when we got the bill the olives were still on there. By the time we had realised it seemed churlish to make an issue so we paid and let it go on the staff tip instead. So all in all a lovely Sunday lunch in a nice venue with nice staff but a couple of little nibbles hence my 4 stars.

Staff were welcoming and when we asked to move tables we were happily accommodated. Lots of small type sharing things for starters . Some interesting main courses , veg curry was good, goulash was good . Nice desserts. Whilst it’s a shame that so many of these “local” pubs have lost a proper bar area and been turned over to 95% food this one handles the transformation well in my opinion .

It was fab. If I could offer one bit of advise is that the portion of the mains were really large so I was glad we didn’t have a starter, I only squeezed a desert in as I LOVE soufflés. The service was fantastic as well, really friendly and attentive. The pub itself is lovely and relaxing to dine/sit in. 10 out of 10 well `the bull team and management. We will be back. I really recommend this pub as it’s the best in the area, fresh food, not chain pub food. What a refreshing change, we don’t bother with any of the other gastro pubs as they’re so disappointing.

Nevermind the menu was attractive, and very different. Two of us had Cauliflower fritters, the other three had grilled Halloumi, all very unusual and tasty. Just back from a lovely Sunday lunch. Very attentive service from all members of staff. Great food. The Yorkshire puddings were a spectacle to behold. Great atmosphere of a local pub. Thanks to James for ensuring everything was co-ordinated on point and in good time. Also thanks to Harriet F for looking after us. We will be back.

We were so excited when this pub reopened after the refurbishment because we are locals and finally had a pub within walking distance. Last night was our 5th visit and I’m afraid it may be our last for food. The food is amazing, it’s the service that is absolutely shocking. Every time we’ve visited the service has been so poor that we go back to our usual haunts rather than risk it, but we’ve always chalked it up to teething problems as a new pub. Sadly it’s been open for a year now and I’m afraid this is no longer excusable. Last night we booked a table for my husband’s birthday and when we arrived it was fairly quiet. We ended up standing around aimlessly at the bar for a few minutes unacknowledged until the bar man nudged a young man who looked lost to help us. He told us to sit wherever we liked which was fine, gave us our menus and then disappeared. He came back asking for our drink order a few minutes later but we hadn’t been given a drinks menu so we had to guess. We then ordered food and were offered tap water which never materialised. After our starters we ordered another drink knowing that the wait time can vary at this place. We’ve taken family and friends here before and each time it was so bad that I had to ask if they’d forgotten us. I’m normally very patient and hate to say anything so I can assure you it was bad if I said something. The drink never materialised either and once again we were left sitting for ages and had to ask for them again when our mains finally arrived.

When The Bull first re-opened it was really exciting news, so my husband and I went twice in the first few weeks to give it a try as the area is always in need of somewhere decent to eat! Neither of our visits wowed us, we put it down to teething troubles, however there were better places to eat locally so we went back to our old haunts. I then saw an announcement about an event with champagne tasting with dinner and my friends and I immediately signed up and experienced a great evening of champagne and fantastic food! This then made us visit a few more times with friends, and each time we all enjoyed it, and received good service.

The most perfect location for a 21st birthday party. The grain store was everything we wanted and more, Seb behind the bar was attentive and couldn't do enough for us. The chilli was incredible, served over rice with sour cream and cheese. yummy! This space is a must if you enjoy quirky spaces. Family and dog friendly too. Highly recommended

I have eaten (but more often drunk) in this pub quite a few times! Love what they have done with the place, its really opened up. I like the decor, and overall feel is very friendly and efficient. Food id yummy and the drinks great. Good wine list and a wide variety of gins, and the staff are always on hand to help with recommendations. Not to be missed are the amazing (and huge) real potato crisps. Trust me just try them!

I’m not one to leave reviews, but I can’t recommend the Bull enough to locals and those passing through. Quite dumbfounded by some of the negative reviews here from a pub that has such a brilliant impact on its community.

Were out for lunch in Penshurst and passed the Bull on the way there and saw sign for ‘Best Pub in Surrey 2019’ so decided to pop in on way back. Have since looked to find where this title came from, but can’t - would love to know? So okay, we weren’t eating... but sat at bar and waited 10 minutes to be served while manager (?) trained new member of staff to make a cocktail. Small bar area and nobody else waiting so we were fairly obvious but no acknowledgement! Did get a sorry for wait once we’d been served, to be fair- but customer service below par for the way they promote themselves. Lots of empty glasses and half empty water jugs collected on end of bar where we sat - were a little concerned to see the used half full water jugs being topped up and sent back out to other tables... also very concerned to see wine being poured back into the bottle. Decor of over bright lighting and oppressive wall colouring wasn’t our bag but appreciate this is subjective. Seating was cramped and too close, but again subjective. All in all, definitely not the best pub in Surrey- and I consider that objective... Please note though, that we visited on basis of sign outside so maybe we were fools to ourselves!

I had been into The Bull for a drink on a couple of occasions and it is indeed a lovely building in a pretty area and the pub has a lovely buzz about it. My girlfriend and I decided that it was time we eat in there and so we booked a table for 6pm on a recent Saturday evening before going along to The Barn Theatre. We arrived slightly ahead of schedule and was shown to our table, the restaurant was very quiet. After our sharing starter which was okay we had to wait a considerable time for our main courses. When I asked the waitress why there was a hold up and pointing out that we didn't want to be late for the theatre she told us that although the restaurant was quiet they had a function on and this was putting pressure on the kitchen. When our food eventually arrived my duck was dry, over cooked and inedible. My girlfriend ordered pork belly which looked nice but I tasted it and it was very stringy. I told the waitress who offered to replace it but we didn't have enough time left to wait for it. She was very apologetic an gave a full refund. Having heard good things about the restaurant I put this down to a one off but when we bumped into friends the next day they told us that they had fish & chips there a few weeks previously and that was poor. Sadly I won't be eating there again.

We stopped here today for a roast lunch after catching a movie at the Everyman cinema in nearby Oxted and I’m so glad we did. Delicious food, incredibly friendly service, a generous wine list, tasteful comfortable décor etc. The Bull Inn is a fine example of everything a modern pub should be. P.S Paint your ceilings dark - it would make the overall look really polished and on trend.

We were staying with a friend who lives nearby and the three of us walked over for dinner on a Wednesday night. Thank goodness we had a reservation as the place was packed. The three of us began with the Walk the Plank sharing platter which was yummy. My main was the seabass special which was perfectly cooked and absolutely divine. It was a generous portion making dessert impossible. Friendly, efficient service. Highly recommended.

Visited with some friends who were keen to try the Mac n cheese. This was ordered from the Classics menu. When it arrived it was not bubbling and inviting but rather insipid looking. As not very much taste more cheese was requested. I ordered a burger and chips but stipulated 'no cheese'. The meal arrived with melted cheese. when this was pointed out the server took it away and came back asking whether I was allergic. My answer was no. Within a minute or two the meal came back. It seemed too quick for another burger to have been cooked. I hope the cheese was not simply removed. All in all, I found the staff not very helpful of happy to be there. it wasn't busy but It didn't feel fun or inviting. A real shame and a surprise, as the decor and general high quality of the refurbishment did not match the food.

Disappointed with their hospitality. When booking I enquired whether their Lights Menu was still available and was told yes. On the day of our lunch could not see the Lights Menu. Politely I asked for same and told tersely it was under Small Classics..When the dessert menu arrived I was disappointed to see the dessert I had seen on their Lights menu online, was not listed. I flagged this up with a member of staff who brusquely told me that they had changed the menu . I do feel that if you are front of house courtesy is key and thar certainly didn't come across.

We really value our evenings out at weekends and the Bull has now reached our top of the list places to go since the makeover and new community ownership we think it has reached a new level of food quality and service. The Atmosphere is as lovely as the decor. We had the cote de boeuf and it was wonderful and cooked so well rare just as we like it! The menu seems to change a bit each time which we like, so keep up the good work, we have spread the word!

Have just had dinner at this gorgeous pub/restaurant - set in this beautiful little village - I can’t praise it enough. Warm welcoming staff - Sebs, our waiter, was attentive and courteous. Fabulous decor throughout and the food to die for! I went for the hake which was super fresh and cooked to perfection! My husband went for the duck which was equally as good - will definitely return to try the Sunday lunches and the private dining area! Parking is available but you have to be quick as it fills up quickly - extremely busy for a Wednesday night - a def sign of a good eatery! All in all a real gem keep up the good work!

This is a pub owned and run by the community and appears to be a roaring success! Been here a few times in the past for a pint, but this now a different place. We went for dinner on a Wednesday evening and it was rammed - just as well our friend had booked. We shared the Seafood Platter as a starter - mussels, prawns, tempura squid, served with sauces & bread - very good! I then went onto the Fish & Chips - excellent - large piece of crispy battered fish with peas and 'triple' cooked chips. A very good, reasonable priced wine list, from which we selected an excellent Chablis. Service was great and our waiter informed us when we ordered that we might have a bit of a delay as an order from a large table had just gone in. However, our food arrived in a timely manner, and we certainly didn't notice a prolonged wait. All the staff were friendly and efficient Highly recommended.

Myself and my 9 month pregnant wife popped in at 3pm Saturday and was advised by the barman that food service will stop at 330pm which gave us enough time to order. i asked where we could sit and got a response from the barman - "any table that hasn't been set up". only issue was they were all set up (bearing in mind food service stopped in 30 min so can only imagine it was for evening service). We were aimlessly walking around the pub looking for a open space. We managed to find a table in the corridor and i ordered a pint of diet coke. With my wife being heavily pregnant and sitting on a very unstable chair, i went back up to the bar and asked the same bloke whether there is any other tables available - the barman replied "no there is not" before handing me a pint of diet coke which cost £5.60!!!!?? when questioning the price, the bloke responded "thats what you asked for" only to realise he charged me for two bottles of coke? if i would have asked for a pint of Peroni, would you have charged me £10 for two bottles?? no - you would have made me aware that Peroni is served in bottles only. I stupidly paid for the Coke but was so wound up by the lack of customer service and pure arrogance of the young barman that I just left without touching it.
