The Bull Hotel in Peterborough

My husband had a gift for afternoon tea for 4 so we invited our friends. We were so looking forward to the event. Little did we know what was in store! Really rude staff that made you feel chastised, floppy sandwiches with little or no flavour, just ok scones - no fruit, just plain and no butter, defrosted watery bite size cake style offerings. This was the worst afternoon tea we have ever experienced and very embarrassing for our friends! Fortunately we did get our money back. Never for us to return - in our opinion - one to avoid!

Stayed at the Bull hotel for a few nights. The rooms are clean and the bathroom was updated, but the rooms have really outlived their era.. It was like going back to the 90’s. Just a new colour on the wall and new curtains would help. I payed over £400 for 4 nights. The staff are generally nice, but a few of them could need some motivation in contact with customers. Particularly one of them seemed really fed up with the job.

Hotel great location,staff attentive. Room was hot when entering and the window was a bit outdated. Had evening meal,was very good. Will return.

Went for Mothers Day lunch. Surprised we had to pay in full at time of booking for a table of 5. On arrival at the table we were served by one of the long serving staff - not a great experience. Very rushed speaking to us. No drinks order taken, apparently no drinks menu. Took food order in a very hurried fashion. Had to order desserts too. As only 3 to choose from (only serving Mothers Day menu) why the rush? Eventually drinks order taken and the drinks arrived towards the end of our starters. Soup arrived on a hot plate, but soup was stone cold & had to be sent back. Vegetables served with main course arrived without any serving spoons - we had to use dessert cutlery. For 4* hotel. where website quotes unrivalled service - lunch service was very poor. Newer younger staff (might even be weekend staff still at school) were great - the more experienced were not welcoming or attentive.

Met my step mum for dinner, lovely food and atmosphere 😋.

Ordered 2 meals in the evening pork belly, the pork belly came out raw the fat was uncooked When we complained the waitress just said would you like another one????? Why would I want another uncooked meal. I tried to explain what could have happened health wise but she didn't listen. Very disappointed considering the cost of the meal

Really enjoyed staying here for 2 nights. Position ideal in centre of city. Room quite small but clean and quiet. Food excellent and service brilliant and staff helpful.

Excellent weekend stay, room, food and staff were great. Took the train 🚂 to Stamford for the day which was well worth the visit .⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Please don’t arrive before check in time if you haven’t paid the £30 early check in fee On the day of our arrival traffic was very light my wife and I arrived 30 mins before check in time to be told by a young lady on reception very abruptly You can’t check in until 2pm We have stopped in hundreds of hotels in our 65 years on this planet Sometimes you arrive on time or late for check in occasionally you arrive early Remembering two occasions The first hotel advised us to please go into the bar area and they would call us when our room was ready The second hotel gave us coffee and cake and informed us when our room was ready they would come a collect us The Bull Hotel Peterborough and Peel Hotels group should take this on board The hospitality industry are struggling at the moment Making guests feeling a little bit special on arrival goes along way

We stayed in this 4 star hotel in downtown Peterborough which is conveniently situated within walking distance of the train station. The bedrooms and public areas are clean and well presented. We did feel that the staff although extremely efficient but could smile more and look as if they are enjoying themselves .The hotel is full of character and the decor is very stylish and in a convenient location around the corner from the Cathedral. We can highly recommend if you are looking for a well situated hostelry in Peterborough.

My company booked me here, it was not good. The room smelled of paint of chemicals, not sure which. Very unpleasant. Not woken up by some droning machinery, it's 00:37 It just stopped, but suspect I will not get any sleep tonight.

Christmas PARTY was no fun. Worst Christmas party ever, with poor quality food. I never expected much, but service and welcome were poor, we arrived At 6 30pm for 7pm start. Staff were not welcoming at all. The bar was understaffed and very small. The drinks were extremely expensive £14 for a can of Guinness and a glass of Prosseco. The starter of crayfish and prawns consists of 1 lettuce leaf slice of tomato and some maryrose covered prawns, all 5 of them. The seabass main was small and dry and served with overcooked carrots and Brussels! I had cheese and biscuits for dessert, the funniest things I have ever seen with 3 small bits of cheese and soggy crackers. The DJ was crammed into the corner, the dance floor was small and just not big enough for the number of people crammed into the room. The night came to a climax with a fight between a couple.of Peterborough Chavs, followed by a visit from 6 police officers as The Bull Hotel had no security staff to brake the fight up or deal with the issues. Over priced, poor service and dreadful food.

Attended Xmas party here and then stayed the night. Bad food, bad positioning & woken up at 9am by cleaner then woken up again at 9:30 ruined night off from kids no lay ins allowed here! Xmas party they stuck us not in the main room with the disco…. Atmosphere therefor was rubbish. Wish they had told us we would have chosen another date where we could be in the lovely old room not in the breakfast room! Was disappointed immediately.., Food terrible 4/5 of our party didn’t eat their turkey. I personally couldn’t even swallow it it was so dry. Do not make our mistake go elsewhere

The building is lovely and the restaurant or food area is very inviting. The staff are friendly but did not check if we were ok with the food. The food itself was ok but nothing special. The fish and chips was very nice but not any better than others in the area for a more reasonable price. My friend had beef lasagna and she was disappointed stating it was not ‘homemade’ as other establishments near by have done. The place is nice as are the staff, but not somewhere I would rush back to for the food.

we held a family function at the Bull Hotel, and the table looked nicely set out. But the table service was poor. One meal arrived so late after all others had already finished. There was only one meat-free selection on the menu, and all requests for any alternatives were declined. Child portions were also declined. One of my brie fritters was emty! My mushroom risotto looked awful and tasted boring. I would not go back there.

Parking straightforward and plenty of room. First room given there was no heating, so we were moved Second room, couldn’t turn the heating off, so one room freezing, the next sweltering Room very small. Bed not comfortable. TV on the way so not possible to watch i. I got a loyalty discount from booking.com which made this just over £80, or should’ve been over £100. The room are very very budget and there is better for the price I won’t be staying again

Had family visiting from overseas and nipped into Pastorudis for a quick bite to eat as wanted to avoid the usual chains that Peterborough is full of. Lovely old building and quaint layout but the service and food quality was appalling. Sandwiches arrived with half their fillings missing (not sure who eats a Pickle only sandwich) bread on the stale side, handful of cheap (and soft) crisps and watery coleslaw on the side, anemic frozen chips. Waited almost 45 minutes for one of our drinks, the waitress was apologetic but somewhat clueless. It has the potential to be a gem of a place but it’s letting itself down.

Had a lovely 2 night stay booked through Travelzoo. An excellent stay and value for money. Dinner on first night was included and delicious. Breakfast was good and staff very helpful. Parking is free and at back of hotel so tricky to get too. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. Thank you for a lovely break away.

We stayed here for 2 nights to attend the Robbie Williams concert in Sandringham. A nice place to stay and breakfast was ok if you wanted a cooked one. There were no pastries or croissants when we arrived at 8.15am. The car park was tricky to find and we had to call for the postcode as it’s different from the front of the hotel.

The Bull Hotel is ideally situated in central Peterborough and has a good-sized car park at the back. Reception provided an adequate service but the best service we received was in the bar and also in the breakfast room where staff were very attentive and efficient. Our room was down a separate ground floor annexe-like corridor and although it was spacious it was sparsely decorated and didn't feel homely, unlike the rooms we've previously stayed in which were located in the main older part of the building. Also the one and only tap in the bathroom had a sprinkler attached and was most annoying as it almost gave you a shower every time you tried to wash your hands - we did mention this to reception! We had drinks in the bar in the evening - a good variety of cocktails on the menu. Breakfast food was great quality and staff were very welcoming and helpful.

How disappointing.....as with other reviews we were given a voucher for Christmas but due to COVID we have only now redeemed it. Unfortunately they don’t offer a savoury option anymore although this was on the voucher. The food was fresh and nicely prepared but the sandwich filling choice was poor. The voucher suggested Cucumber and cream cheese, Ham, Oak smoked salmon and Chicken, bacon and tomato mayo. We got cheese and pickle, ham, egg and tuna!! Not quite what was expected. Our waitress was surly and no where near giving the customer service we have received elsewhere.So disappointing when our voucher was given with love and kindness. Would not return.

We read about this hotel in a neighbouring community magazine and felt it would be good to support the couple as they had not long taken it over and with COVID outbreak we thought it would be good To support where we could. Just returned from a relaxing hour or so enjoying a splendid afternoon tea at the Bull Hotel. It was served in the main restaurant of the hotel which is spacious and light.A glass of fizz to start while we chose between a savoury or sweet offering. We opted for one of each! Given the choice of tea or coffee we went for the coffee which was served in large pots-one each. The sandwiches were fresh and tasty served on a platter. . The mis matched cups saucers and side plates added a retro feel to the occasion and tables were dressed in starched white linen decorated with fresh flowers. The savoury etagere had a warmed mini quiche,spring rolls and a terrine served with mixed olives. The cheese scone was also warmed served with chutney and cream cheese. The sweet one had both a plain and sultana scone served with jam and clotted cream. The whole thing was toppped off with a lemon posset, large piece of millionaires shortcake, flapjack and rich chocolate cake. Thankfully we were offered a box to bring home our leftovers as there was just too much . Service was efficient and helpful. Would highly recommend.

We received a voucher at christmas from a very good friend for afternoon tea which we redemmed last week having never had afternoon tea before was pleasantly surprised to find it was more than just a sandwich and a cake with a cup of tea we were pleasantly greeted and served promtly with a good selection of well filled choice sandwiches and a variety of cakes and tarts and a couple of scones each (these were a bit on the dry side not like mums) but a good quality tea a glass of prosseco helped wash them down all in all a good experience

We met the family here for a birthday Sunday afternoon tea. We were seated and served by a young crew who explained the choices available. I opted for a savoury tea. The sandwiches were tasty and varied. The pork belly bites, black-pudding balls and tomato quiche were cold and would have been much nicer hot. The cheese scones would also be tastier warm.The fizz was nice and fizzy and the ambience relaxing. They cater for vegetarians. The price we paid on a deal was reasonable for the value of the event.

A wonderful friend bought me an afternoon tea at The Bull for my anniversary. It was a little difficult to book as the person on the phone and then kept putting me on hold to serve customers. Then when asked not to call me back and that I would call the next day rang me three times. That aside we were sat in the main restaurant. The service was professional and swift in a nice way. Tea and coffee came in huge pots. Sparkling wine was delicious. Little sandwiches were fresh and very happy in my swap with my husband for his ham sandwich. He said the salmon was lovely. Scones nice with clotted cream and jam. Small portion but table next to us asked and received extra cream. I should have done that. Panacotta more like sylabub tasty and tangy. Two little cakes that tasted the same and a lovely delicate chocolate macaron. Service provided without fault. Lovely way to spend an afternoon

I stayed here a few times so I have sampled a fair few things on the menu. The food has always been very good in the evening with some excellent specials. Lovely meal.

We have just visited for afternoon tea. Excellent value, very well looked after from start to finish. We were looked after by a lady from Russia who was very discreteley attentive,sorry I did not get her name , The thing that I thought was very good, you could have a sweet or savoury tea, what a good idea. Booked this hotel for its central location and was impressed by the management, especially when I was moved due to an issue with an external noise. We had a big family reunion and basically took over the lounge area, was very comfortable and relaxed. The only negative I have is the breakfast staff were absolutely useless! Sour faced! Unable to toast bread! I was given warm bread instead of toast! Butter was so hard it ripped the bread! Would not eat the breakfast again as not worth the hassle of trying to get a genuine smile or adequate toasted bread!

We visited again for afternoon tea having been twice before and had a lovely time on both occasions, but on this visit we found that the food wasn’t that good. The sandwiches were good with a nice selection but the scones were on the hard side with thin runny jam also with hard pastry to one the cakes selection. We don’t think we would be visiting again for this offering as we feel the food has gone downhill since our last visit this time last year.

I’ve been going to this pub/hotel for many years, our friends like to call it “our local” but boy have things changed.Just tonight me and my friend went in there but a new worker with dreadlocks who served us was obnoxious and so loud, we couldn’t even hear ourselves talk, not the nice relaxing drink we are accustomed too, also shouting about his wage slips to customers saying “I get paid more cos I’m older” really irrelevant information we don’t need to know. Also there was so much shouting in the kitchen, it felt like a completely different atmosphere and environment. Unless they get rid of these employees or tell them to act professionally, then I’m done with this place.

While travelling to visit family in the North we’d booked to stay at the Bull in Peterborough to break the journey up.The hotel was warm and spacious as was our room.The decoration was a little tired but everything was fine.A very nice bathroom with a good walk in shower.The bed was a great size though perhaps a little hard for me, my husband was happy : )The breakfast wasn’t great but there was a variety to choose from.The bar was busy with people arriving for Christmas work parties and family celebrations but all the staff coped very well indeed and were very friendly.It was a good place to sit and play our game of iPad scrabble : ))So all in all, I would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again!

I had a Christmas meal in one of their lovely rooms along with twenty four other friends. I was disappointed with the meal and we will not return. The food lacked any flavour. The vegetables were thrown into serving dishes,were luke warm and arrived sometime after the meat along with something purportedly to be a Yorkshire pudding. The christmas pudding was dried up and tough. One of my friends had cheese and biscuits and the brie had obviously been on the plate too long. As a group this was our third year for a Christmas meal at The Bull and sadly very disappointed and will not be returning.

Did not eat or stay here but went for after dinner drinks. Great selection of Gins! The lounge is comfortable and nicely decorated and the staff very friendly.

Before writing this review I did some call and speak to Chris one of the managers to make him aware that room 218 has bugs and I had been severely bitten on my feet after staying one night. That was a waste of my time as he could care less and near enough accused me if lying.

interaction is distinctly lacking to how it used to be. Checkout was about 2 grunts from the receptionist, not even asked if the stay was ok etc..... The room was very comfortable, however, the bathroom was not fully replenished, very little loo roll, after requesting some, we had 1/2 a roll delivered with a scraggly end which had clearly been lifted from another bathroom !! And equally as bad in my book, the bar had run out of real ale ! I'm afraid this place has gone down hill, im not an old grump and im easily pleased, but im afraid The Bull will not be getting us anymore, a shame, because we've really enjoyed our little nights away with them in the past. Breakfast was a bit of a washout too, served 1 rasher of bacon, 1 small sausage, half a tomato, 3 or 4 mushrooms, a scoop of beans and scrambled egg..... We had a bed n breakfast room deal, but no way is that worth the £13 normally charged

Great place which I’ve visited on business trip, staff was extremely helpful and polite, room was clean and nice but the best part of the hotel was restaurant with delicious food which I would recommend to everyone. Definitely try the duck.

I treated a friend of mine to afternoon tea at Bull Hotel for her birthday. The environment was quite "posh", as my friend does "posh". The atmosphere was relaxing and quite busy. The table setting was as to be expected of the Bull Hotel.

A post birthday Afternoon Tea with a friend who had also recently had a birthday. We were so well looked after by Aneta. I was impressed when ordering the type of afternoon tea we wanted Antea asked us if we had any allergies.

This is a charming hotel situated in the crnter of Peterborough. The staff were attentive so we felt well looked after. Recommended.

This hotel is very much a tale of two halves!

Having been several times before for afternoon tea, we brought friends to celebrate their wedding anniversary.It was our choice mainly because they offer a choice of either a sweet cream tea or savoury. The food, service and restaurant were all very good and welcoming. However, having spent between £50-£60 with extras, we did not expect to pay a further £3 for the car park, especially as we had a blue disabled badge. This has never been the case before and we will think twice before we come again to the Bull. Most hotels have guest concessions and even car parks rarely make charge for Blue badge holders. A lovely afternoon spoilt in the final minutes.

Stayed here for the Peterborough beer festival and what a lovely place hidden in the town centre, beautiful decor and good room, breakfast was lovely and the staff are very friendly, looking forward to going back next year

This hotel has defiantly improved on service and quality than before, An eta on reception offered first class service and information and during our time waiting in reception everyone she served she offered impeccable service what an absolute diamond. Patrrycja, who served us afternoon tea we were blown away with her level of service what an absolute gem, the quality of food and service was first class. I am due to go back next year for my mum's birthday and if this is the level of service I can not wait for our gues6to experience this

Had a night out for my birthday and stayed at this lovely old hotel, very characterful and charming, nice staff, friendly and welcoming

Used to stay in this hotel on a regular basis, not been for a while so gave it a try, reception staff not very friendly but helpful. The room I got smelt really bad so asked to be moved, second room I got was even more dated, no control for the TV and the bathroom flooded due to the leaking tap and short shower curtain.

After 18 months here very frustrated as wifi rarely works and tonight air conditioning broken but unfortunately at 10pm nobody senior enough to make a decision to move us to another room.

Lovely area to enjoy the tea. Offered choice of tea. Good size pot. Excellent selection of eats and the best scones tasted for a long time. Will come again.

We’ve stayed at The Bull many times and have used it as a base when visiting family. It’s always been steady - this visit was somewhat of a disappointment. The room itself was, as usual, clean and very spacious - no problem there.
