We booked The Bluebell for a last minute overnight stay. It's a charming old worldly Inn, lots of character with a warm welcoming feel. The owner and staff are helpful and friendly. The rooms are lovely set around a courtyard and a couple have been transformed from an old stable block. We arrived early enough to enjoy a delicious evening meal. Our only disappointment is that we don't live close enough to visit on a regular basis. Thank you, we'll definitely be back in the spring

As a family of 5, we set ourselves a challenge 6 weeks ago to find Peterborough’s (and outskirts) best roast dinner. This was week 6 of us on our challenge, and wow, this was absolutely the best roast dinner we’ve had yet. Firstly, this was surprisingly the only restaurant we’ve been to which serves gammon as a meat option, and the only roast dinner where the potato’s were almost perfect (never as good as mine 😉). The children thoroughly enjoyed their meals also, and a lovely little addition was the trivia cards on the tables and games in the corner of the dining room. We stayed for 2.5 hours and really enjoyed every minute. We will absolutely recommend the bluebell inn to our friends / family who are keen for a good Sunday roast!! Was so good I just had to write a review, lovely staff also 😁 For now Bluebell Inn, you take our top spot for the best roast in and around Peterborough! ♥️

Being close to Peterborough crematorium we chose the Bluebell, for my Mums wake. Wow what a spread they put on , great value for money. Everyone was very impressed with the food. They catered for one gluten free and one dairy free in our group with a very good selection. The staff were attentive , friendly nothing too much trouble. We would 100% recommend the Bluebell.

We stayed here for one night whilst travelling to Scotland. We were made to feel very welcome by the Landlord who showed us to our room. The room was beautiful. Clean, welcoming and a very comfortable bed. We had an evening meal which was very tasty. The waitress who served us was an absolute delight. So polite and nothing was too much trouble. After a lovely quiet sleep, we went for breakfast which was cooked to perfection. All in all, a beautiful pub with very friendly locals, in a wonderful village setting. I would definitely return. Thank you for a perfect overnight stay

Stayed for a night whilst attending a wedding nearby. The pub food was excellent with staff incredibly courteous, polite, and helpful. We also met the owner who was very lovely to deal with. We stayed in the rooms next to the pub kitchen and they were quite warm due to their aspect and time of year but they were comfortable and clean. Limited parking is available for guests at the back of the pub. Even though there are only 4 rooms, the pub provides breakfast (cooked and/or continental) which was of good quality too. A nice stay and would recommend for a night or two.

We pre ordered our meals as there were 11 of us. One couple had to sit in a different room from us as they had brought their dog. (No complaints with that.) We arrived at about 6:30. You had to go to the bar to get your drinks. No one really greeted us or really acknowledged us. The young girls put water on our table and went away. Our starter arrived around 7:45…. keeping in mind we had pre ordered. No apologies for the wait. No checking on us…nothing. Everyone seemed to enjoy their starters. My scallops were delicious. After our starters it was another 45 minutes for the mains to come out. One person had to wait another 10 minutes for his to arrive. Some got the beef bourguignon. It was big chunks of meat and dry. They asked for added gravy. The steak was good. The lamb was tasty but no vegetables. My chicken with penne was okay. It was difficult to see the chicken. The desserts were fine, but no one had coffee as it was about 9:30 by now. All in all the food was okay but the unbelievably long wait put a damper on everything. You couldn’t fault the young ladies who served us as they were probably not trained to cope with large groups. Unfortunately, we will not be back.

We stayed overnight but first had drinks and dinner. Great location in the rural village of Helpston. Excellent and quick service for drinks, a bit slower with dinner. Mine host, Paul, is very good company and, being a Friday night this was evident as the bar was full for most of the evening. Great atmosphere. My wife's rump steak was excellent, one of the best for some time now, and she is a steak aficionado! My burger was disappointing as, a personal preference, I much prefer minced beef in a burger to ground beef which ends up in a solid patty. The room was adequate but more cramped than the last one we stayed in the previous month. We found the bed squeaky and not very comfortable. The shower would also benefit from having a shower curtain. Notwithstanding the above comments, I should be more than happy to stay here again. Highly recommended.

I spent the nights of the 12th, 13th and 14th April 2024 at the Bluebell Inn. It was my first proper visit to Helpston from where my great-grandfather, James Dolby, left for the North in the 1880s and became a signalman in Ilkley for the rest of his days. I not only met a Dolby still living in the village but a third and a fourth cousin living away. My grandfather was a second cousin to Thomas Dolby, the publican and blacksmith, making me his second cousin twice removed. I had a room in what was Thomas's old forge and it was first class and so quiet. I also had a meal at the Bluebell on the Friday evening with my fourth cousin, Martin Hall, a regular there. This also was extremely good. The staff were immensely friendly and helpful and the breakfast substantial. My parting words were that I would heartily recommend the Bluebell, which I am now doing and was asked to do so by writing this review on Tripadvisor.

Lots of potential, however our food was served to the table next to us where they tasted the food before realising it wasn't theirs. The server returned it to the kitchen where it was re-plated & returned to us after a short wait. Unfortunately the food was luke warm & when we said it had been touched, we were offered some additional vegetables. A further conversation led to a 10% discount off the main courses only, £5, really disappointing that no one even offered an apology.

The owner Andy was very friendly and pleasant as well. We took the dog with us. She did find the room too warm and struggled the first night. The only problem was the drain in the shower. The water didn't go down quickly enough and started to flood the whole of the shower room floor. So maybe needs investigating and fixing. The bedroom was pleasant clean and comfortable. Helpston is a very attractive, typically English village with many old beautiful thatched houses. Worth a visit with the Georgian market town of Stamford just down the road.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We stayed for a couple of nights, mid week, in November, having stayed here before, a few years back and having pleasant memories of the pub. It is more competitively priced than accommodation in nearby Stamford, yet only minutes away by car. We were pleased to be accommodated in the same room, the old Blacksmiths, with a vaulted ceiling, large, comfortable bed, hanging space, a wall-mounted TV and an unusual wall-cupboard with table underneath, containing coffee, tea etc and fresh cake, replenished daily. Unusual in a room, there was a good selection of magazines and books for us to browse, including books by and about John Clare, who is connected to the village. The en-suite shower room, with heated towel rail, complimentary toiletries and bathrobes had plenty of hot water. The rooms are set to the back of the pub, accessible without having to go through the pub and away from any possible noise. We ate supper on one night, served in a characterful room with welcoming log fire. The bar stocks an impressive selection of gin! We had a Soup of the Day and the Pie of the Day, but didn't find a dessert that appealed. The food was well presented, the pastry a little heavy and a meal that proved a little disappointing, but tastes differ and other diners seemed to be tucking in. Breakfast is served in a small side room. Perfectly acceptable but we both felt that things were very much being portion controlled, some of the smallest sausages we have come across and only just enough fruit juice on each table to provide a small glass each. This is understandable when there are only four rooms available and not all of them are necessarily occupied on any one night. On the second morning, my other half asked if he could have a variation of the Full English, increasing one ingredient, whilst not having four of the others, but was told that this accommodation couldn't be made which was a little disappointing. In summary, whilst the accommodation was the same, we felt that, overall, our experience was not as good as our last stay.

We visited the Blue Bell at Helpston on Sunday 26 November 2023 for lunch at 13:15. We made a reservation for four. The service was poor, the staff lost our order and they took over an hour to inform us that the lamb I had ordered was no longer available, when the food arrived it was warm but not hot. We complained to the staff but were not offered any compensation of any kind. When we spoke with the owner he was rude and abusive. I will not be returning. The Chef caught up with us in the garden and asked what had happened and I explained the sorry tale to him and pointed out that the owner had made no attempt to diffuse the issue or to offer compensation of any kind. He said he would speak to the owner and try to arrange some compensation and come back to me by Monday. I have not heard from him! Food adequate, Service Non-existent! Value for money appalling. My wife and I stayed overnight here. The pub itself is pleasant, and our (twin) room was simple, but clean, tidy and well equipped (had a small fridge which was very handy). Only small quibble would be that the mattress on one of the beds was rather "tired". Opting for the inclusive breakfast was a smart move as it was excellent and very good value. My wife had smoked salmon (!), for which the chef personally asked her how she wanted it served, and my full English was top notch. The service in both the bar and at breakfast was friendly and helpful. All in all, I would definitely recommend it and, as a bonus, if you are into English poets, John Clare's house is right next door!

We had a fantastic Christmas meal at the Bluebell last night. Every course was delicious and piping hot. Sometimes food is tepid at Christmas meals and you end up bolting it down before it’s stone cold but not last night. All the staff were lovely...

We had booked a table and four of us enjoyed sitting outside at the rear of the property for lunch. The pub has a incoherent system of routing you out to the side of the building to the patio attge rear, rather than straight through the building, where you see a no entry sign on the chair. Made no sense at all, just irritating. We ordered from a good choice of mains, small plates or starters. I really enjoyed a vegetarian aubergine dish, with breadcrums and garlic bread. Othere had burgers and peri peri chicken. Staff were mainly friendly. They hold your credit card as a means of ensuring people pay.

Visited Saturday afternoon for a cold drink and scone. Wanted to sit outside as it was such a nice afternoon. The only free table was literally stacked with dirty plates, glasses, cups, cans. I went inside and although the entire place was empty EVERY table was also stacked with dirty crockery!! Half eaten meals, flies everywhere. One of the tables outside became vacant so I ordered my coke and scone and asked that the table be cleared.. A very reluctant lad came out and cleared the debris, didn’t bother to wipe the spilt salt, ketchup and general mess up. Another customer was loading dirty plates from her table onto another but still nobody bothered to clear up. My scone came out like molten rock,it had clearly been zapped too long in the microwave. When it had cooled down enough to hold I tried to cut the scone,it was rock hard. By this time the staff were out enjoying the chaos that was happening in the grounds of the cathedral and clearly weren’t interested in customers. Definitely won’t be returning, the whole place was dirty.
