Superb Sunday lunch for the 4 of us. One of the best we've had. Food was excellent and cooked to perfection and the amount was generous. Service was fast and the waitresses were extremely helpful and polite. Cracking place, will definitely be going back. 👍

We travelled down from Staffordshire and our friends booked The Bluebell as previously we've had lovely food there and a very enjoyable experience. We arrived at 18.30, our table was booked for 19.00. At 18.45 we asked if we could place our order before going into the restaurant but were told this was not possible as they had pre-orders to prepare first. We went into the restaurant at 19.00 and placed our order. The restaurant was only half full. Our starters arrived at 20.10, over an hour after ordering and the food was fairly average. We then began to worry about how long our main courses would be as everything was taking so long and we were meeting friends later. When we asked why it was all taking so long we were told that we were not actually booked into the restaurant . This seemed strange, as we had rang twice to confirm numbers for the booking and on checking in when we arrived at the bar, our booking was confirmed with the details clearly written down in the reservations book. Eventually we decided to leave as we could not wait any longer. We paid for the starters but the manager was insistent that we paid for the mains which we refused to do. She was also insistent that we had not booked which was completely untrue. We were really looking forward to a nice dinner with friends and sadly this was not to be.

We visited with friends, who had been to this pub twice before and really enjoyed the food. This was booked weeks ago and were told it was the festive menu. When we arrived at the pub we were asked if we would like to eat in the bar or restaurant, neither was busy, so picked the restaurant. We were booked in for 7.30pm. We were given a menu, not the festive menu, but that was fine. We waited a while and nobody came to take our order, we had to go and ask someone. They did then come promptly and took our order for starters and mains. We waited over an hour for the starters and went to ask where they were. We were told they would soon be out as they had just served a big party with their main festive meal, 6 people! OK we thought, another 15 mins and eventually the starters arrived, 2 prawn cocktails, 1 whitebait and 1 king prawn in batter, not exactly hard starters to prepare but they were all very tasty. By this time the only people left eating in the restaurant and the bar were the festive party finishing their desserts. We still had not had our main course and this was now 9.20pm. We went to the bar to find someone to ask and noticed then, there was 2 of the waiting staff now eating! At the bar I found 2 ladies chatting and said 'excuse me' we are still waiting for our main courses. A lady who I believe was the Manager came over and said who took our check? We tried to explain we had had starters but not mains and we had been here almost 2 hours. She went off to the kitchen. When she returned she said they had been very busy, it was politely pointed out to her that the restaurant and bar was not busy nor had been all evening. Unusual you may say on a Saturday night 11 days before Xmas? She then told us that everything was prepared fresh and it takes time, we appreciated that but it is now 9.25 and we are still waiting. We were having 1 lasagne, 1 ham egg and chips, 1 risotto and 1 ribs (now most of this is not freshly made, by the nature of the choices). The Manager then started to shout and say if we wanted quick food we should have gone to Wetherspoons! By this time I must admit the 4 of us had had enough, the 6 people at the table near us were sat with open mouths at the way we were being spoken to. She then proceeded to tell me that I had shouted at her across the bar demanding where our food was, this was totally untrue. So we said we had had enough and was leaving, she said good, go! We eat out at least 3/4 times a week be it breakfast, coffee, lunch or dinner and have never been treated like this. We left and then the bar person came out and shouted at us to pay our bar bill, I must admit we had forgotten this was on a tab and we returned to pay this. Funnily enough the Manager had disappeared and no one apologised for what had happened. I am not sure if we had been missed, but just admit that and do something about it. Not a great pre xmas treat as were were left hungry. This is certainly not the way to treat customers, apparently they have only run this pub for 6 months but if they want to carry on, they are going to have to treat their customers a little better! Obviously we won't be returning and will advise that this is not a great place to go.

Firstly I would have loved to give this a 5* review. The food was excellent and the value for money was excellent. The staff were lovely and friendly (when you saw them) Unfortunately nearly 4 hours for a pre ordered meal for 10 was not acceptable. The restaurant was not busy, the room we were in had no other dinners at other tables. There were other dinners in other areas of the pub. We were a party of 10 and had all pre ordered the whole meal. Table booked for 1.00pm those having a starter were served around 2.00. We understood that one chef had to leave as his partner had gone into labour. While this was unforeseen and could account for some delay, and if we had walked in and ordered off the menu would have been acceptable but when everything was pre ordered? We had no contact with the staff when not serving. We had to go and find staff and asked 4 times for water to the table. No opportunity to ask for anything extra. All drinks required a walk to the bar. All this over 4 hours. As I said at the start, we all enjoyed the food very much, I had the best steak I have had for years, the staff were lovely but we just didn’t see them and the delays especially for those not having a starter put a damper on the meal and hence 3* sorry!

My family have been using the Bluebell Helpston for many years (21 years or more) for formal and informal meals and family get togethers. It is a real happy place for us. The food quality, service and value for money are amazing, the manager Paul and his team really make people welcomed and valued. Whilst i love the creative and and ever evolving menu, Sunday lunch is always a big hit with me whether alone or with family ..... its the best for miles around.

We booked The Bluebell for a last minute overnight stay. It's a charming old worldly Inn, lots of character with a warm welcoming feel. The owner and staff are helpful and friendly. The rooms are lovely set around a courtyard and a couple have been transformed from an old stable block. We arrived early enough to enjoy a delicious evening meal. Our only disappointment is that we don't live close enough to visit on a regular basis. Thank you, we'll definitely be back in the spring

As a family of 5, we set ourselves a challenge 6 weeks ago to find Peterborough’s (and outskirts) best roast dinner. This was week 6 of us on our challenge, and wow, this was absolutely the best roast dinner we’ve had yet. Firstly, this was surprisingly the only restaurant we’ve been to which serves gammon as a meat option, and the only roast dinner where the potato’s were almost perfect (never as good as mine 😉). The children thoroughly enjoyed their meals also, and a lovely little addition was the trivia cards on the tables and games in the corner of the dining room. We stayed for 2.5 hours and really enjoyed every minute. We will absolutely recommend the bluebell inn to our friends / family who are keen for a good Sunday roast!! Was so good I just had to write a review, lovely staff also 😁 For now Bluebell Inn, you take our top spot for the best roast in and around Peterborough! ♥️

Stayed for a night whilst attending a wedding nearby. The pub food was excellent with staff incredibly courteous, polite, and helpful. We also met the owner who was very lovely to deal with. We stayed in the rooms next to the pub kitchen and they were quite warm due to their aspect and time of year but they were comfortable and clean. Limited parking is available for guests at the back of the pub. Even though there are only 4 rooms, the pub provides breakfast (cooked and/or continental) which was of good quality too. A nice stay and would recommend for a night or two.

We pre ordered our meals as there were 11 of us. One couple had to sit in a different room from us as they had brought their dog. (No complaints with that.) We arrived at about 6:30. You had to go to the bar to get your drinks. No one really greeted us or really acknowledged us. The young girls put water on our table and went away. Our starter arrived around 7:45…. keeping in mind we had pre ordered. No apologies for the wait. No checking on us…nothing. Everyone seemed to enjoy their starters. My scallops were delicious. After our starters it was another 45 minutes for the mains to come out. One person had to wait another 10 minutes for his to arrive. Some got the beef bourguignon. It was big chunks of meat and dry. They asked for added gravy. The steak was good. The lamb was tasty but no vegetables. My chicken with penne was okay. It was difficult to see the chicken. The desserts were fine, but no one had coffee as it was about 9:30 by now. All in all the food was okay but the unbelievably long wait put a damper on everything. You couldn’t fault the young ladies who served us as they were probably not trained to cope with large groups. Unfortunately, we will not be back.

We stayed overnight but first had drinks and dinner. Great location in the rural village of Helpston. Excellent and quick service for drinks, a bit slower with dinner. Mine host, Paul, is very good company and, being a Friday night this was evident as the bar was full for most of the evening. Great atmosphere. My wife's rump steak was excellent, one of the best for some time now, and she is a steak aficionado! My burger was disappointing as, a personal preference, I much prefer minced beef in a burger to ground beef which ends up in a solid patty. The room was adequate but more cramped than the last one we stayed in the previous month. We found the bed squeaky and not very comfortable. The shower would also benefit from having a shower curtain. Notwithstanding the above comments, I should be more than happy to stay here again. Highly recommended.

I spent the nights of the 12th, 13th and 14th April 2024 at the Bluebell Inn. It was my first proper visit to Helpston from where my great-grandfather, James Dolby, left for the North in the 1880s and became a signalman in Ilkley for the rest of his days. I not only met a Dolby still living in the village but a third and a fourth cousin living away. My grandfather was a second cousin to Thomas Dolby, the publican and blacksmith, making me his second cousin twice removed. I had a room in what was Thomas's old forge and it was first class and so quiet. I also had a meal at the Bluebell on the Friday evening with my fourth cousin, Martin Hall, a regular there. This also was extremely good. The staff were immensely friendly and helpful and the breakfast substantial. My parting words were that I would heartily recommend the Bluebell, which I am now doing and was asked to do so by writing this review on Tripadvisor.

It was a lovely pub to stay at. Friendly and relaxed. Helen served some lovely evening food and Ross prepared a lovely breakfast They were very friendly and helpful. The owner Andy was very friendly and pleasant as well. We took the dog with us. She did find the room too warm and struggled the first night. The only problem was the drain in the shower. The water didn't go down quickly enough and started to flood the whole of the shower room floor. So maybe needs investigating and fixing. The bedroom was pleasant clean and comfortable. Helpston is a very attractive, typically English village with many old beautiful thatched houses. Worth a visit with the Georgian market town of Stamford just down the road.

We stayed for a couple of nights, mid week, in November, having stayed here before, a few years back and having pleasant memories of the pub. It is more competitively priced than accommodation in nearby Stamford, yet only minutes away by car. We were pleased to be accommodated in the same room, the old Blacksmiths, with a vaulted ceiling, large, comfortable bed, hanging space, a wall-mounted TV and an unusual wall-cupboard with table underneath, containing coffee, tea etc and fresh cake, replenished daily. Unusual in a room, there was a good selection of magazines and books for us to browse, including books by and about John Clare, who is connected to the village. The en-suite shower room, with heated towel rail, complimentary toiletries and bathrobes had plenty of hot water. The rooms are set to the back of the pub, accessible without having to go through the pub and away from any possible noise. We ate supper on one night, served in a characterful room with welcoming log fire. The bar stocks an impressive selection of gin! We had a Soup of the Day and the Pie of the Day, but didn't find a dessert that appealed. The food was well presented, the pastry a little heavy and a meal that proved a little disappointing, but tastes differ and other diners seemed to be tucking in. Breakfast is served in a small side room. Perfectly acceptable but we both felt that things were very much being portion controlled, some of the smallest sausages we have come across and only just enough fruit juice on each table to provide a small glass each. This is understandable when there are only four rooms available and not all of them are necessarily occupied on any one night. On the second morning, my other half asked if he could have a variation of the Full English, increasing one ingredient, whilst not having four of the others, but was told that this accommodation couldn't be made which was a little disappointing. In summary, whilst the accommodation was the same, we felt that, overall, our experience was not as good as our last stay.

The service was poor, the staff lost our order and they took over an hour to inform us that the lamb I had ordered was no longer available, when the food arrived it was warm but not hot. We complained to the staff but were not offered any compensation of any kind. When we spoke with the owner he was rude and abusive. I will not be returning. The Chef caught up with us in the garden and asked what had happened and I explained the sorry tale to him and pointed out that the owner had made no attempt to diffuse the issue or to offer compensation of any kind. He said he would speak to the owner and try to arrange some compensation and come back to me by Monday. I have not heard from him! Food adequate, Service Non-existent! Value for money appalling. My wife and I stayed overnight here. The pub itself is pleasant, and our (twin) room was simple, but clean, tidy and well equipped (had a small fridge which was very handy). Only small quibble would be that the mattress on one of the beds was rather "tired". Opting for the inclusive breakfast was a smart move as it was excellent and very good value. My wife had smoked salmon (!), for which the chef personally asked her how she wanted it served, and my full English was top notch. The service in both the bar and at breakfast was friendly and helpful. All in all, I would definitely recommend it and, as a bonus, if you are into English poets, John Clare's house is right next door!

Just had roast dinner in our local village pub.. mine was vegan which Ross accommodated very well, making me my own cauliflower cheese. Really tasty all round. He also came to make sure everything was ok for us. Very friendly pub, relaxed and dog friendly. Paul the owner is also very welcoming and friendly. Looking forward to trying the takeaway and will be re visiting!

We had a night's accommodation booked at the Bluebell Inn and arrived early enough to have dinner. The fish menu was spectacular and very reasonably priced; we shared a starter of salt and pepper squid which was so light and fresh! My main of tuna nicoise was excellent and the presentation throughout was great. My husband had maple glazed gammon which looked amazing. Russ has done a great job in such a short time as chef at the Bluebell. His pride and attention to detail show in his dishes and his chats about his food. Go for a meal even if you don't stay the night, but we advise you do both. It's a great pub, lovely rooms, good value and generous portions!! We will be back soon.

My fiancé and I have just had a celebratory meal and drink here following a promotion at work and also sending out our wedding save the dates. We were served by Darren, who said he's relatively new at the Argo. Darren made our celebration that much more special by being an amazing server. He was so friendly and chatty. We've always loved the Argo, but would recommend it even more so after our lovely experience with Darren. Thank you for making our dining experience so relaxed and fun ❤️

Visited Saturday afternoon for a cold drink and scone. Wanted to sit outside as it was such a nice afternoon. The only free table was literally stacked with dirty plates, glasses, cups, cans. I went inside and although the entire place was empty EVERY table was also stacked with dirty crockery!! Half eaten meals, flies everywhere. One of the tables outside became vacant so I ordered my coke and scone and asked that the table be cleared.. A very reluctant lad came out and cleared the debris, didn’t bother to wipe the spilt salt, ketchup and general mess up. Another customer was loading dirty plates from her table onto another but still nobody bothered to clear up. My scone came out like molten rock,it had clearly been zapped too long in the microwave. When it had cooled down enough to hold I tried to cut the scone,it was rock hard. By this time the staff were out enjoying the chaos that was happening in the grounds of the cathedral and clearly weren’t interested in customers. Definitely won’t be returning, the whole place was dirty.

We had booked a table and four of us enjoyed sitting outside at the rear of the property for lunch. The pub has a incoherent system of routing you out to the side of the building to the patio attge rear, rather than straight through the building, where you see a no entry sign on the chair. Made no sense at all, just irritating. We ordered from a good choice of mains, small plates or starters. I really enjoyed a vegetarian aubergine dish, with breadcrums and garlic bread. Othere had burgers and peri peri chicken. Staff were mainly friendly. They hold your credit card as a means of ensuring people pay.
