Very very good food...a fantastic pub dinner...

Nice pub, staff were excellent, but it didn’t really work for us. We felt that there was little atmosphere, the food was served incredibly quickly, almost in a rush. Given the price of the meals, we had expected a little bit more with the food. I was miffed at finding a pint of Estrella Galicia had cost £6.99 and be aware of the additional 10% service charge. I’d have preferred to have chosen my own level of gratuity.

Popped in after a lovely day out at the coast to finish off the day with a pint of Guinness on our journey home. Felt so incredibly unwelcome. No eye contact given by older male staff member at the bar who muttered ‘we only do it in cans’ under his breath - wish we had walked out there and then. We did however, notice that obvious locals to the pub were greeted… not in a massively friendly way I might add - benefit of the doubt- maybe it’s their way or they were just having a bad day - whichever - we won’t return!

Great surprise !! Known of the Bull for many years but this is the first time., really good .. good food selection and nice wine list too..and I almost want to keep it go myself as I don’t want it to get too booked!!

What is going on? We turned up today at 12.30 for lunch- it was closed with no notices. Outside tables were littered with rubbish and used glasses from previous night. According to their website they were open until 3pm ?? We will not bother returning.

Great food & Service but limited parking for 2nd sitting at 1h15. Will book again for 5 person’s birthday but early to ensure parking places for 3 cars

Super country setting in the delughtful village of Cottered. Decent parking. Excellent service and a smashing meal. We both had fish mains. Both meals were really tasty (sea bass and smoked haddock). Couldnt resist the desserts either.

We were a party of five adults. The service was fast and efficient, the menu choice has good variety, the food was excellent and the bill was very reasonable. We all agreed that this was the best meal that we have had in a long time and we would all definitely recommend it. I look forward to visiting again. Thank you.

Arrived for a Business Lunch. Staff were friendly. Food was 7 out of 10. Service Charge was automatically added to the bill. For this reason, I will not return to this venue for either business or personal. I strongly disagree with the automatic addition of a service charge. I like to pay what I feel is appropriate, and not what the venue feels is appropriate. This is usually higher than they add, so it's taking away earnings from their staff. Tipping should always be optional in my opinion. It's a shame, but it means I will not return.

Perfect meal with good service. Lovely music. We had chateaubriand specially pre ordered. Perfectly cooked steak and gorgeous desserts.

If your looking for a menu with a lot of varied and interesting choice , not filled up with different over priced burgers I would suggest The Bull is your first choice , if you appreciate quality food , well served , try it please I went as a party of four on Wednesday for lunch, my Scotch Egg followed by Calves Liver was just amazing , my wife's Pie was exactly as described she could taste the kidney and chunky steak , a Halibut was also ordered , I understand it was succulent ,oh the soup presentation was a occasion , not just a plate of soup , as you can guess we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch time , meal , suggest you book because we will have your table when we return very soon , highly recommended , when I walked in though it was just a pub , pub meals , its a lot more ,go and enjoy as we did please .....

We went for my husband's birthday, and we had a fabulous delicious meal, the food never fails to deliver, supported by great service. Nothing was too much trouble and we even had candles put on the desert, al lovely small touch. Thank you 👍

We enjoyed lunch with family in mid February. Efficient, friendly staff, excellent food and beer( steak pie as a main with bread and butter pudding for dessert). Reasonable prices apart from the fillet steak which at £33 I thought was a bit OTT for a pub. One small gripe about heating. I understand pubs are reluctant to spend on heating in the current times, but the pub was decidedly cold (some of our party had to keep their coats on). It would have been nice if the log fire had been burning.... It detracted from our lunch and the food got cold quite quickly. Otherwise I would happily recommend this classic pub if you're in the area.

What an excellent pub and dining experience. Food was top-notch and could not fault it. Well worth the trip out. There is plenty of choice on the menu, and you will not be disappointed.

Upon arrival we had a lovely warm welcome; my old golden hen went down a treat. An extensive a la carte menu and daily specials made choosing a pleasant quandary. The omelette ‘Arnold Bennet ’ is spot on, as were all our starter mains and puddings. I had the yummy duck special and huge portion of blackberry and apple crumble & custard just what was needed in a wet winters eve. Great food, great hospitality

Delicious lunch, as always. A real treat to see such a variety on the menu and everything beautifully presented, piping hot and so full of balanced flavour. The arancini amuse bouche should definitely go on the main starter menu next year. Thankyou

Absolutely would not go back. We booked online for 6 adults and one 22 month old. Booking was accepted and we were told to bring a highchair with us. Thought odd but took one anyway. When we arrived, they had a large, aggressive sign on the second door saying no kids under 7, so we felt unsure they would let us in as we had no idea it was no kids until we arrived. They seated us without mentioning the no kids sign and we received our drinks. The drinks weren't filled, they were about 3/4 of the way full. The food was lovely, no faults there. My baby needed changing before we left for our car journey home, so I went to disabled toilet, only to find absolutely no changing facilities, not even a bin for feminine products/nappies etc. I used some toilet paper to cover the cold, dirty floor before putting my baby down and changing her. (Luckily I didn't need to throw my nappy away as I don't use disposable.) I went to the bar to ask why there was nothing, as we weren't told beforehand, and was ignored by the manager. She walked past me to serve some people who had only just walked in. One of the waitresses took my question, but before she could respond, the manager came over and started very aggressively telling me that I knew there was no changing facilities because I knew to bring a highchair. I replied that we had been told about the highchair but there was no mention of the changing, and she immediately raised her voice to tell me that I knew and I was definitely told. (We looked at the email and we can see it says no highchairs, but no mention of changing on there). I walked away, feeling about ready to cry from the aggression I had received. I told my family what had happened and they agreed that it was out of order. My mother called the manager over to talk, and she eventually came over with a very angry demeanour. My mum asked why there was a lack of changing and why we hadn't been told, and was met with aggression, telling my mum not to raise her voice, despite the fact my mum was talking in a calm manner. My mum said she wasn't raising her voice and that the manager was being rude. This was responded to with "Oh, I'm rude am I?!" Before she stormed away. Sick of how we'd been treated, we decided to just pay and leave, but when my grandparents went up to pay, they were ignored by staff. They tried getting their attention and eventually a payment was taken.

Booking made online, 6 adults and 22 month old baby, was told to bring a high chair. Arrived and lovely sign on door no under 7’s. Was a bit worried entering but we had said at booking we had a baby and they led us in without a problem. Meal was nice, we all had Sunday roasts and puddings Soft drinks were offered, by half or pint but when the pints arrived they were very short on fluid, about 3/4. I asked why and was told it was sold by the bottle, I suggested they ask you if you want a large or a small rather than a pint which you don’t get, wasn’t received particularly well but I felt like offering a pint it should be a pint. Drinks were only offered the once during whole meal The baby needed a change before the drive home. No changing facilities at all provided, just cold, hard, dirty floor. We questioned this just before leaving and we were nastily told we were informed at time of booking, all done by email and no reference to this at all. Asked the manager to come and speak to us all rather than the baby’s mother. She came over very defensive and started accusing us of raising voices which we hadn’t, I said she was rude” oh am I now” she said as she turned and left. This place isn’t friendly let alone family friendly, If they don’t want children under 7 say at booking, say on website, but nothing was, not even as we entered, just rudeness. No thanks never again!

An excellent lunch - delicious and freshly cooked - only 4 stars (not 5) as it is a bit on the expensive side but it is worth it for a reliably good meal - all four of us were very happy with the food - definitely would recommend

Nice place, decent beer, food was alright. Good to see carbs sold separately for the keto dieters.

If you want a nice and relaxed dinner, this is the place. Food is great staff couldn't be better and prices are very reasonable. Will be back.

Speaking for myself the Duck roast was not as tender as I would have liked. Everyone else didn't have any complaints, the service was excellent. It was quite a 'cosy' atmosphere, the tables were quite close together and another group of diners were quite loud which did spoil our visit a little but can't really blame the publicans for that. Overall it was a nice visit considering we were just passing late afternoon and took a chance on the place.

Alkthough i have recommended this pub restaurant to friends i would not in future. Beer far too expensive, service poor, welcome non existent - greeted with 'have you booked?' and a telling off for not booking when mid week and a 6.30pm arrival, only one other table attended. not at all busy. would not even spend a few seconds taking a pic of the table of friends when requested. always telling us how busy they were when no one else there! service charge added to bill which is illegal and unwilling to remove it.

We stopped off for a quick break from driving. The staff we met were really friendly and helpful. Beautiful place.

Good beer choice. Great service. Friendly staff. Tasty food. Clean. Nice location. We had Lasagne with a lovely side salad. Tasty Sausage and Chips with a lovely side salad. Only thing for me was the chips, more like small roasted potatoes, chios should be of an almost even size and not so chunky for the best chips.

As we had a smaller wedding with special guests we wanted to keep it local and booked our party in to The Bull. It was amazing, all the way from first contact to the actual day. Darren and team were very accommodating with our dietary requirements and were amazing with our guests. The food was delicious, all guests commented on how lovely it was and what a great time they had had. Thank you Darren and team for making our evening special.

I have never had a bad meal at the Bull in Cottered. Went for a family meal with my granddaughter and son-in-law from Melbourne in Australia and 3 others. I had the delicious calves liver with a cheesy sauce, new potatoes and onion rings. My sister had the Halibut. Others had fillet steak cooked to perfection. Well done chef!

Very disappointing experience. We finally stopped in this afternoon after having driven past several times. The village and surroundings are beautiful and we were excited to try the place. The first thing we noticed was a sign saying that children under 7/8 are not allowed inside. I presumed that meant in the bar/drinking areas so we went In. As we entered, it's fairly small, neither of the two ladies working welcomed us although we made eye contact - they looked away quickly. At this point, I felt unwelcome but I didn't want to walk out as my wife and son were hungry. Eventually, one of the ladies displayed she was ready to serve us. I asked for a table of three for food and she replied abruptly "No kids inside the building" or something to that effect. I asked why and she said it's their policy as they are a 'fine dining establishment' It was a lovely afternoon luckily so we were happy to sit in the garden. After a long time, they brought the menus which are definitely not fine dining. We ordered a burger and chips, lasagna and risotto for my son (no kids menu and seemingly no will to accommodate families at all) The food was mediocre at best but served quickly so I suspect the lasagna was microwaved. The whole experience was poor but I wouldn't be writing this if as we were leaving, the lady who first 'welcomed us' hadn't ran out into the car park asking about whether I had paid! I told her it was on the table which she could have easily checked - how fast of an escape could we have made with a 4 year old? Absolutely disgraceful and we definitely won't be returning.

Lovely country pub . Had an amazing Adele tribute! Would definitely come again especially if Lisa Marie is performing again !

Stopped here 1 pm Thursday lunchtime as we were driving past and the car park at the front of this nice looking pub restaurant had plenty of free spaces. We were surprised at the notice on the door saying “No Children” but went inside to the empty restaurant (just one table of 4 occupied). We took a seat and the waitress brought over the lunch menu. The cheapest offering was £14, baked ham, egg and chips or scampi and chips. I ordered a small glass of Sauvignon Blanc and we ordered the ham and scampi. The wine was brought over in a chipped glass (on the base) and the bottle had obviously been opened a few days ago. I didn’t complain at that point but if I had known the price, £7.50, I probably would have. The meals arrived promptly and I noticed immediately there was a problem with my ham. Although hand carved the edges of the two slices were dry and grey. I lifted off the top slice to see the slice underneath was also wet, sticky and grey in the middle. It also smelt “off”. I called the waitress back and said I couldn’t eat the ham for obvious reasons. She took it back and came back almost immediately saying “the chef says there is nothing wrong with the ham, he cooked it this morning, but would you like something else”. I was so taken aback with the response I just said can he do me egg and chips. She returned 5 minutes later with a fresh plate containing the original egg and 6 chips. I said is that the same egg and chips I returned, “yes” was the reply, the Chef has reheated the chips. So, I have in front of me a small, child portion, of stone cold fried egg and refried chips. I was hungry so ate this dismal offering and asked for the bill. Unbelievably I was charged full price for ham, egg, chips. Had to insist the bill was adjusted and it was to £3.50 for a bowl of chips and £2 for my egg. Was told to pay at the bar. At the bar I again said how disappointed I was, especially being served ham in such a condition. At this point another woman, maybe the manager, pulled the waitress aside and said there was nothing wrong with the ham, they cook a fresh ham every day and that I probably don’t know what a fresh baked ham looks like. How insulting can you be. I probably baked my first glazed ham before she was even born. I paid the bill, feeling ripped off and insulted. This was by far the worst dining experience I have ever had.

My boyfriend and I were visiting Hertfordshire from London and The Bull is an absolute gem. The food here was incredible and we were blown away by both the service and the quality of the dishes we had ordered. Unmissable if you’re in the local area!

My old work pal and I are members of the Old Codgers Lunch Association. We meet at the Bull most months and are thoroughly spoiled with excellent service, delicious food and a wonderfully clean, comfy and relaxing environment. Definitely a must try!

Nice friendly staff, however didn't think the food was anything brilliant compared to a few years ago! Think the chef may have changed, still a decent place to go for a quick stop

Sitting back from a busy country road in a lovely village setting, The Bull presents a warm friendly atmosphere. with many rustic features. The Lunchtime menu was excellent and service friendly and efficient. Menu was impressive and high class which made choice difficult - but French Onion Soup followed by Liver & Mash highly recommended. Everything was nicely presented with generous portions and many extras. Highly recommended in every respect - and the monthly music evenings look intriguing.

Haven't been here for ages, but the food all looked really nice. My sandwiches were very good.

It's alright food, it's just really expensive for what you get. You won't do bad for stopping here, the food is good enough, but you can have the same quality of food for much less elsewhere (it's just finding somewhere as close that might prove difficult). Atmosphere is pleasant enough, depends when you go (and who you're with lol). Staff are all really nice though! It's a pub-restaurant predominantly, so don't expect to stop for a beer drinking pub experience (summer may be, as they have a small beer garden). Though if you really want a pint, there is a bar section, but it's small, and a bit "local" in the vibe. That said, everyone is very welcoming in there, but it is all very close.

They must work very hard to keep up the quality and choice. It was a bit chilly in there but appreciate the increasing costs of running a venue without passing that on to customers.

My heart says, "Wonderful restaurant that serves sumptuous food in a relaxed atmosphere with excellent service". My head says, "Stay away as space can be limited and it will be harder to get a reservation when I want one." The heart wins!

A very good experience at this establishment after visiting for the first time. The decor was welcoming and homely (we could imagine a cosy atmosphere in the winter with the fire burning). The waitresses were very friendly and helpful and we weren’t rushed to make our selections. With regard to the food, it was very nicely presented, the portions were good and the taste was delicious. We arrived late lunchtime and although the pub closed at 3pm we were allowed to finish our drinks. We will definitely be coming back to visit again.

I took my partner to this dining pub for his 50th birthday last Saturday evening. We had a lovely three course meal consisting of cheese souffle and crab salad to start, liver & bacon and filet of beef for main, followed by apple & blackberry...

Menu varied and struggled to choose as everything sounded so tasty! I was not disapointed!! Friendly efficient service

We visited for lunch with our dog whilst on holiday and it was great. Service & food all wonderful - the chicken, chorizo risotto - wow, I’m still thinking about it now! Dog friendly outside with a lovely terrace / lawn area at the rear.

Arrived at the Bull, the staff were very efficient and took us to our table and allowed us to sit and make our choices. The orders were taken and the food prepared, a complimentary bite of food was brought out along with a small soup....

Great experience for foodies, from the hors d'oeuvre to starter to main … and finally that cheesecake of the month with a non-base .. who knew. Delish from start to finish and we’ll def be back

Really lovely surroundings, the food was good and the staff professional. Not the cheapest of places being that it's a green king pub but worth it if you don't have to worry about budgeting with kids etc.
