The Brunswick in Brighton and Hove

Popped in on day 3 of the beer festival not expecting too much (being the last day of the festival) but was pleasantly surprised. The pub was not that busy and the staff in the bar were mostly friendly. Good range of beers and there was a mellow band playing. Might be somewhat different on a gig night or busy night but enjoyed my visit.

If I could give a zero rating for this place I would! On Friday night I was there with a few friends booked to see our friend playing in the band at their venue, it was quite busy that night, I have never been there so don't know if they are always this busy on a Friday night or because they have a band playing there. We joined patiently to one of the three queues at the bar with someone serving each queue, after about 15 mins when it came to our turn, this guy was serving suddenly moved to serve someone else on the other end! So I asked a normal question "Excuse me, why did you not serve us and serve someone else, we have been waiting here for 15 mins in the queue?" But came the other guy with the black cap answering back rudely to us "You have not been here for that long because I have been watching you! And also if you talk like this I can ALWAYS NOT serve you!!!" The way he spoke to his customers was so unprofessional specially in a hospitality venue! I was not in anyway abusive or unruly, I simply asked "WHY"? Later on I have found out his name was Tom and apparently he is the manager there! I have managed a restaurant for 40 years myself and would never dream of talking to my customers like that! I certainly will not go there again! He humiliated me in public and this should not be allowed...!

Wen to Comedy night - mens toilets were disgusting - flooded with urine. Bearded barman spent more time drinking his own pint than serving. Literally stood being ignored as staff just looked up and served first person in front of them. Music was horrendously loud in bar. Been in Brighton & Hove for 39 years - probably worst pub in city. Bouncer was only friendly person in whole place!

Great beer, great service but dreadful food today. Nachos - vegan option ; we were not told that there was no vegan cheese until the food came to our table. Chilli - nothing to make it a chilli; no kidney beans, no taste really. No offer of anything to make up for the lack of cheese and no reduction in price. Deeply, deeply disappointing for the price. We were very hungry so ate the majority. Won't eat here again. Great beer though and thanks to Millie for her lovely friendly service.

I used to love this pub but last night all but one member of staff were very unwelcoming. I tried to lighten the atmosphere with one when serving me by saying "has it been a long night?" And he just blanked me. I appreciate many of us feel overworked and under paid but the frosty atmosphere is not good for a pub. Some people I don't know behind me chatted to me about it and praised me for trying! We all decided there are much friendlier pubs to visit in Brighton and Hove!

Came to the pub as we were visiting the Escape Rooms up stairs for a team day out. Atmosphere was really nice and chilled, nice selection of beers, ciders and spirits. Interesting (good interesting) selection of food, unfortunately the food itself was very hit and miss... Some people had really well cooked and tasty food while others was cold or had very chewy meat, even if they had the same dishes. Fortunately though the 2 fussy eaters got good dishes. Pub is very well laid out and clean, would come back again to give it another go.

Very disappointed as this used to be a regular haunt of mine years ago, returned with my family today to wait over half an hour for very basic food that was borderline acceptable, definitely not worth the £

We called in for a couple of pints on our way home and found the pub to be incredibly quiet, almost deserted. It was Ok though and the beer was fine. Nothing special that evening.

Best Sunday roast in a long time! Great taste, especially the potatoes which were a hit with everyone and great size yorkies! Will definitely be returning, thank you Fred’s!

One of the best roast dinners I’ve had in Brighton and Hove! I will certainly be coming back again. I had the three meat roast, my wife the nut roast and sides between us, all of which was fantastic. Flavour, portion size and price point was all spot on.

Booked for Sunday lunch indoors but when arrived decided wanted to sit in the garden in the sunshine. No problem as there were a few places left outside. Food was buritos for three and forth had vegetarian roast. All very quick service good sizes and friendly service. Will be back next time friends visit us.

As a large group of very thirsty and exhausted NHS workers, we enjoyed a much needed and well deserved evening of downtime following the Brighton Marathon where we had provided the medical services. Thank you for accommodating us and for your support. The staff were all fabulous and we had a great evening, thank you!

We had an absolute shocker here. My surf rock band were asked to play a party in the basement bar, to be followed by EDM DJs. The organiser had been shown by the pub where the band should set up on his visit to the venue. The venue states in their standard email they send out that for the price agreed for the room they include a sound man. We set up our kit guitar, bass and drums. Then the manager appeared , looking nervous , and said we couldn’t start until a sound man had checked levels. No problem. They had one upstairs. But, big problem, he was ‘too busy’ to come down. It was like a nightmare scene from a farce , or a Monty Python sketch. He wouldn’t come down , so we couldn’t play. End of. DJs we’re fine - recorded music permitted at any volume. But live music must be checked. Our surf band don’t even have a singer , didn’t need their PA system , and were in a soundproofed basement. One by one we tried to reason with the sound guy upstairs. Not possible. Did we expect to be able to turn up at someone’s house and just start playing ? - he wondered, his eyes spinning. Any explanation that we had been invited , the venue said a sound guy was included in the fee , we would be much quieter than the DJs etc etc fell on his deaf ears and swivelling eyes. He wouldn’t leave his booth upstairs for the 1 minute required. Computer says no. He was so unreasonable it was almost impressive, but actually pathetic. We cancelled our food and beer order and loaded the gear and mates back in the van and went to a friends large house and did a gig there instead. I’ll never go back to the Brunswick. Unless it’s on fire. But I wouldn’t piss on it if they begged . What a total dive , staffed by unimaginative, power-crazed , useless lunatics. Just desperately uncool people slaving for a total dump.

We came to see a band that my son was following. A small band, but we’d been waiting to see them since July. We drove 2.5 hours to Hove, got to the Brunswick, only to be turned away as their policy after 8pm is over 18s only. There was no flexing of this despite my son is 2 months off 18, was with me (his mum) and that lawfully he was allowed to be in a pub with an adult. We don’t drink alcohol, we just wanted a burger and to see the band, and mentioned that to the barman, but it made no difference. So we went back home 2 pre bought tickets and 1/4 tank of petrol later, and an evening of sheer disappointment.

It's a decent venue for outside seating. It's rough around the edges but you know that when you enter and it sort of works. I've been for drinks plenty of times but this time we tried the food. Its an absolute rip off. The chef is pulling a fast one here! We ordered Burrata and they had clearly ran out but instead of telling us that they served the most laughable portion of dregs (see pictures). It costs £8 and when I questioned whether the portion was correct the chef apparently said it was. The food was OK in general but the portions were so pathetic. Pure greed.

I’ve just visited this pub for some drinks. I used to frequent this pub when the new owners took over a few years ago. It was all promising then but my god, how it’s gone down hill. Filthy dirty bar, floor and tables inside and out. Slow, dispondent service at the bar. Fag butts, rubbish, sticky tables. Didn’t risk going to the toilets. Half dead plants in planters with more fag butts and detritus. Very disappointing, couldn’t get out of there quick enough. Yuk!

I used the cellar bar for my birthday party. The staff were extremely helpful and accomdating. The food was excellent. The space is perfect for around 40 people. We had DJs and the music system was great. I would highly recommend.

Came here with some friends for our first pint after lock down. I understand there is a virus still on but the female bar staff and the supervisor are always so grumpy in here but today it seems something had made them especially grumpy.. and it just ruined our Sunday afternoon.. Hopefully be back for a roast soon (as I love them!) and hopefully the staff have cheered up.

I had been to one other pub since their reopening and I hated it, the other pub was dirty and clearly not COVID secure. The Brunswick however was BEYOND AMAZING. I can’t believe I’m writing a review about a pub but the staff waited on us hand and foot, drinks service was unbelievably quick, they had hand sanitiser at different points, toilet was one in one out, floor was marked out and the overall cleanliness was superb. I want to say thank you to the floor manager who arranged the tables as she kept us outside for 7hrs whilst they were at capacity, I want to thank our waitress for being so quick on the drinks, and I want to thank the general manager who had CLEARLY built a special team who are keeping COVID secure. Well done and we will be back.

Booked to see the south coast soul revue at the venue. It was a real bonus that this pub has a great selection of craft beers too! Didn’t try the food but will do next time.There is a basement room where bands play as well as their main band room called The venue. It had a lovely warm atmosphere and not like like a traditional pub with dimmed lighting. Friendly staff

Had a gorgeous roast this evening at the Brunswick came in with my friend and our doggo who plonked herself on the couch as per. As soon as we walked in the lady working Zara brought Nesse my dog over a dog bowl and popped it on the table at her head level thought that was really nice as she hates sitting on the floor. My roast was minted lamb chops I had 3 huge lamb chops and enough potatoes and veg to feed me, plus my doggo got leftovers as was such a massive portion it was definitely one of the best pub roasts I’ve ever had. The other member of staff with the slipnot top/long black hair was also very lovely. Thank you will be back.

We had a great meal here for our work Christmas lunch. The food was amazing, portion size generous and they even bought out extra roast potatoes and gravy :) Staff were great and we couldn't fault it.

Our Sunday lunch was good but we were massively disappointed that we did not get the table we had booked over 2 weeks before. Because we were a big group ( 6-8) with children and a dog we had opted for this particular table because it suited our needs - sociable, bright, flexible and close to the door. Also given the numerous places to choose to go for Sunday lunch its frankly their best asset. On arrival we had been placed elsewhere and when we discussed it with the staff were told that a larger party would be arriving 2 hours later. When we left 2.5 hours later there was no large group, only a couple and we are frankly pissed off and will think twice before booking again.

We hired the cellar at the Brunswick for a birthday party and it was perfect! Andy and the staff could not have been more helpful. From start to finish through all the planning, nothing was too much trouble. One the night the staff were fantastic.The cellar is ideal for a party, it’s cosy, atmospheric, you have your own bar, DJ area, dance floor and can turn the music right up!We would highly recommend the Brunswick and we will definitely use it again in the future!!

Went to the Brunswick for Sunday lunch and was told we couldn’t order food for 30 minutes or more because another table had a large party. If you can’t cook quickly enough to cover your tables, get less seats or faster kitchen staff. Won’t return.

In a side street off Hove seafront this very friendly and busy pub has a private hall at the back. We went there to see a music band which was playing swing dance music. The room has the appearance and feeling of being in a Parisian night club. It really is excellent but does get rather busy and crowded, which does make dancing very difficult at times, which is such a shame as it's such a perfect environment. Recommended for a pleasant evening out.

We had our wedding at The Bruswick, and the service we received was amazing all the way through!The manager helped with all the planning and met with us several times throughout the months leading up to the wedding.. He alldo helped us decide on amounts of food and drinks in a really honest way, and turned out to be spot on!The wedding went perfectly - the staff was lovely, food was great and they had decorated the cellar bar really nicely with fairy lights and candles.. Several of our guests even said it was the best wedding they'd been to!We're already thinking about an excuse to have another party, which will definitely be at The Brunswick!

Often frequent here for a pint and a sit in the lovely garden out the back and I have always had a fantastic time. Whenever I have eaten here is has been incredibly hit and miss, the roast dinners are divine and probably one of my favourites in Brighton - it gets very busy so I would recommend booking on a Sunday! I have however eaten here a couple of times during the week and the service has been slow with no apology and the food less than average. Overall a great venue for a beer and a sit in a fantastic beer garden, Sunday roasts are great but the food otherwise is nothing to write home about.

My local. This is the bar that I always show my friends and family. Unlike other Brighton bars, this feels homely and chilled out. The prices are reasonable and there is always space. The jazz nights are also a treat. The best there is.

As usual an excellent choice of ales for their summer beer festival.As a fairly frequent visitor mainly for their ales and tap takeovers I cannot fault this place. Plenty of music to suit all tastes and food is available. Spacious area outside for sunny days.

We had time to kill before doing our escape room so we stayed to eat there and it was very enjoyable. The staff is lovely, and the food is good. We had a pizza and a veggie curry (quite spicy !) and loved it. We will for sure come back on our next trip to Brighton

Bar is so slow. Even if they not busy you can spend 20 min waiting for your drink... To be ordered!!! Despite good location and nice garden stuff is to slow... Would not recommend

I like the venue a lot and it gives me no pleasure me to have a go at you, but on Saturday the main talking point of everyone I met there was how long it took to get a round in - people were stood waiting for 20 minutes or more and that went on for hours. That's basically bad management on your part - not putting enough staff on and not training up properly those who were working. Please do better on this aspect - other than that the gig room is one of my favourites in Brighton, so it's a shame to spoil the experience with this kind of poor service.

Five of us had a really good Sunday lunch today - wide choice on the menu (including veggie options) and large portions (without sacrificing quality -which was high and included a wide range of vegetables). Friendly and helpful knowledgeable bar staff.

We came to watch a band, the function room is great, very cosy and comfortable. Quick bar service and a lot of free on-screen parking nearby after 8pm.

We recently got married and had our reception at the Brunswick, it was perfect! Andy (General Manager) and Paige were really attentive and helped us to plan our day so we could celebrate the way we wanted. We were having trouble finding a wheelchair accessible venue, we had looked at about 10 other venues with no luck but thankfully Andy got in contact with us.

It makes a refreshing change to find a place which serves excellent food (and a good amount of it, too!) at a really great price. These days I tend to walk into establishments expecting to get ripped off so I’m really chuffed to have found The Brunswick.

I don't think you can beat the Cellar Bar at The Brunswick. Had my 40th upstairs and my 50th in the basement there...(there's an analogy there!) Staff were ace, plug and play ease (as long as you've downloaded the playlist), and yours until 2a.m. (or your knees give out whichever comes first!) You have your own bar until 1a.m. and there was no rushing you off the premises like in some venues. Everyone was up for a good night. It's a one off payment and there was no requirement to take extras (like a buffet) or to spend a specific amount behind the bar. I'll definitely be booking there again.

We held a party at the cellar bar. Perfect places to enjoy yourself without any worries. They provide professional music equipments, professional services and good selections of drink! The staff work hard to respond to your requests so you don't need to worry about anything. People danced along all night very happily.

We had our Christmas staff party here and it was brilliant! We had a fantastic time, the food was really good and the atmosphere was lovely. We have really appreciated everything they did for us and its really nice venue too. We had a great Christmas party and we highly recommend it!

Good selection of beer, live music on regular basis, indoor and outdoor seating with great atmosphere. Been here loads of times over 25 years and always had a great time whether lunch time, evening or all day.

Only pub I've ever been too where people queue in a straight line and the bar stag don't stop them. Very, very annoying. Good beer, great garden, food used to be ace but now just pretty average which is a shame. Staff mostly lovely, one very moody and rude girl though, will spoil your day if you get served by her.

Visited here for the Beer Festival. Loved everything about this pub, the beer, the staff, the location and the entertainment. We sat outside in the lovely garden, listening to live music and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. We will be back!

We held a 30th birthday party last week-end in The Cellar and it was amazing! There is a lovely ambience which is perfect for a party. The staff are excellent - very helpful and professional .They helped to ensure all went smoothly. The vegan food was delicious and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Cellar has its own bar which is another great asset. We would certainly hold another event there in the future! Many thanks to Andy who communicated with us both prior and after the event and made the booking process very straight forward , A great place!

I was at The Brunswick last Friday night for an awesome gig with Never The Bride and The Wildes (Brighton local Blues players) and had the best night! There was 20% of food and drink with an advanced ticket for the gig - I had the salt & pepper squid with lime mayo and it was delish - the discount helped but I would have thought it reasonable anyway.. My friends all had good things to say about their food too but they can do their own review :) . What I was particularly impressed with was the conscientiousness of the staff. They were so friendly, attentive and helpful especially Anna and Matt. It was a wonderful evening and even though I live in London I shall be back there as soon as I can!

I am a musician, I've performed at The Brunswick twice now and both times it was nothing but a pleasure.

Hired the main room for a gig the other night. Great communication with venue beforehand (Andy). Excellent sound man, helpful bar manager. Good facilities for band members. Room set up beautifully too.

This is a great venue for live music, especially if you're a fan of acoustic/folk stuff, as there are many gigs here and a very high-standard open mic night every Monday evening. Aside from that, they have a great range of beers, and excellent food at a reasonable price. A really nice pub!

Andy from the Brunswick saved us at the last minute when our charity group were let down by another venue, and hosted a small group of young carers to perform their drama piece in their venue room.

The Brighton Showcase happens every two weeks on a Wednesday giving young performers a chance to showcase their talents. I've never been disappointed. The night has a warm atmosphere, giving all the musicians the attention they deserve. The standard of musicianship is excellent and original with a wide range of musical genres - there's always something to send tingles down your spine. As always at the Brunswick, the man on the mixing desk does a wonderful job and the sound is fantastic. There are usually 4 or so acts doing a spot. My one criticism would be that the website doesn't give enough information or links to any of the acts profiles, making it difficult if not impossible to find out more about the music after the event.

My boyfriend and I have birthdays in March so we shared a party on Saturday March 17th for our 21st celebration. We hired the Cellar Bar downstairs for a private function.

Recently moved nearby and was recommended this pub. The new menu is really good, absolutely delicious and a week night is fine, if a little quiet. Have tried the last 3 Friday nights and this will be my last. Each Friday there are big groups of children, often unsupervised by their parents. Don’t have an issue with children in pubs but not when they are allowed to run around shouting & screaming with no challenge from staff or parents. Parents also take whole tables for the children with potential customers leaving as there are few seats because of the children. Perhaps they should put a time on when it is over 18’s? If it weren’t for these issues it would be a solid 4 or 5!

Typical old pub serving fantastic Thai food! Always fresh and hot! Lots of ales and ciders to be had! does get busy, Thai food served after 5pm. Go early!

It’s the second time my friends and I have visited the pub and it certainly did not disappoint!

I go here regularly to see gigs and it's one of the best venues in Brighton. A good selection of ales as well. I avoid 'craft beer' as, in my opinion, it's overpriced rubbish. The food here is a bit basic in my opinion but okay if you just want a little something.

We went to The Brunswick for Sunday lunch to try the special offer running in February. Good platters with nice combinations; loved the seafood platter which came with fresh bread and a green salad dressed with pickles. Really tasty food and great value.
