Tried to get a drink in this bar at 10.40 last night (Friday) and was told sorry we have called last orders and can't serve you, there were 7 of us. I was always under the impression that last orders was one last drink before time at 11, but obviously not in this pub, so we ended up in Somerset House.

Visited the Brunel for a Sunday Roast and have to say it was first rate. My girlfriend said the food was obviously cooked with love - which kind of sums it up. Excellent roast lamb and a great pint of London Pride to accompany. What’s not to like !

I stopped by here yesterday for a pint with a couple of friends before returning to London. We ended up having the roast and it was lovely. Portion size was big so I would say you don't need the cauliflower cheese, but, you'll want it, it was lovely. It's well worth feeling stuffed. The staff were really nice and chatty as were a couple of the locals. You can see in to the kitchen (which I don't usually like in case it puts me off, but it was spotless), so the chef clearly takes pride in his work. If you are in Clifton, or Bristol in general and want some decent food or just a pint, pay this place a visit.

Much to like and several unexpected positives. A friendly, helpful and welcoming female took orders at the bar and showed patience when sampling and choosing drinks. We arrived fairly late for a Sunday roast around 14:00 hrs. The Brunel has no pre-booking of tables so it is a first come first served basis. A fair choice of novelty real ales and despite no London Pride, I was lucky to find a fruity IPA. Dinners looked fresh and colourful. A decent horseradish, gravy boat, a separate selection of veg for plating-up, perfectly cooked chicken and Yorkshire pudding make a hearty meal at an attractive price. No mustard. An added bonus compared to a typical carvery is that the dining areas were free of cooking odours and quite intimate for a quiet chat. Toilets downstairs are a little gloomy and were in need of brighter lighting. Would happily visit again and recommend as I could not fault meal or drinks.

I used the toilet and was shocked at the apparent disgusting state it was in. When I had a word with the landlord, he told me he glued the seat down to stop people ripping off the seat and then told me I was having a go at him! A very poor selection of beer too. In a city of over ten breweries it’s disappointing to see not one represented and the only non-lager choices being Wadworths. Comments elsewhere suggest the landlord has an active dislike of real ale drinkers so maybe that explains the very limited choice.

My modus operandi, order curry, find pub, have a pint, collect curry, take it home. Due to Covid, pub choices limited. Pre Covid I've always avoided the Brunel because of its in your face clientele. Well ! Any port in a storm so I've had occasion to use the pub ( sorry, wine bar ) ( sorry, gastropub ) twice recently. On the 1st occasion 6X on the 2nd Horizon, both beers beautifully presented and, for Clifton, very well priced. Ignore Toad of Toad Hall, challenge any preconceptions and give it a try.

And 1 star is too much after what I witnessed last night. A group of older men asked for 2 of their pints to be topped up and after a short exchange of words the landlord asked one of them to leave saying that he was refusing to serve him. This place has many great memories and is still a fun place to pop into when in Clifton. It's full of locals who all know each other, there is plenty of colourful banter and the food is always fresh and well presented so what's not to like. Free half hour parking gives you time to order, find a real parking space and come back in time for the food to arrive. Tables are in fairly short supply so get there early or book. Outdoor tables are on the street and good for people watching but generally have smokers at them so not my choice. There was a Shaun the sheep in the garden opposite this weekend but I think they are all being collected this coming week.

Living near to Clifton Village, we pop into Brunel Wine Bar now and again for lunch or, sometimes, for evening drinks too. It's quite a traditional venue by modern standards and, as such, quite a refreshing change. It's not an enormous venue so not suited to large groups if you are thinking of turning up on spec. The lunches are attractively presented yet unpretentious and tasty, quite big and fairly priced. We had one of their burgers yesterday which was enormous and delicious and came with bacon and cheese on top, thin and slightly spicy chips and a lovely, colourful and freshly-made and very colourful assorted salad. Previously, we've had the home-made moussaka which came with roast potatoes and assorted veggies. Just what you need on a cold winter's lunchtime. Brunel Wine Bar does offer an assortment of wines and spirits and currently has on a very nice mulled cider. It IS a venue that is very popular with many very long standing locals who tend to congregate in the bar area and, as such, has quite a colourful (and really interesting) atmosphere much of the time. I do think it's a venue suited to adults in the main bar and outside seating area, although there is a smallish dining room up a couple of stairs and away from the bar so it is possible to dine/drink in a more sedate atmosphere if wished. When the weather is better and on a quiet day, it's sometimes nice to have a seat outside on the pavement and watch the World go. It is also where people go to smoke though and it can get a bit busy out there at peak times. Haven't tried Sunday lunch here yet but very keen to. I understand it's very popular so probably best to book in advance. Friendly and efficient family team of staff.

The veggie breakfast I had was nice. There was a massive queue in the rain outside before we could be seated as they did not take reservations. The table was wobbly and so my coffee was spilled all over it as we began eating. There was generally too much going on around me to feel relaxed whilst eating. The cafe is too small for the demand. You pay when giving your order which is fine. Whilst you eat you can watch all the people outside standing in the rain wanting your table. The breakfast wasn’t so amazing we would go back, not on a weekend anyway.
