A lovely meal with friends Gabriele the Italian chef is a great host and serves up some great food his bolognaise and vegetarian risotto along with the more traditional fish’n chips received great reviews - a mix of English and Italian cuisine what’s not to like - preserve “the local” and enjoy

So disappointed was looking forward so much to a nice Sunday roast words can't express what a big dispointment it was. Could not tell what meat you were suppose to be eating. So thin and tasteless. Yorkshire pudding was so hard you could not eat it. Veg flavourless.

Went for a family roast dinner, only to be told when we asked if there was more than 1 plate of veg for 7 that there was not. Some slim slices of meat and under cooked roast potatoes a roast this does not make.

We had passed by the The Brown Jug quite a few times and decided to try it. We weren't disappointed. The place was spotlessly clean, nice pub crowd at the the bar. The food was really good, freshly made and piping hot when it came to the table. We thorougly enjoyed it - can recommend the garlic bread, the fritto misto and the burger which is what we had. Also the desserts are scrumptious. Great value for money, must come again when visiting Kent! Hope the locals keep on going here.

I don't really want to write a bad review as not everything was bad. The Brown jug is a lovely little pub out of town, with a very nice garden and good parking place. The food was good same as the service. We had two lovely girls serving us and the chef made sure we had a great time. The problem we had was with one of the customers sitting at the bar. He's an Indian man who was very drunk and his persona and language was disgusting. We understand it's a pub and that you sell alcohol, but there were children at another table and the lady who was sitting at the bar (we're not sure if she was the landlady) failed to contain the situation. We felt our dinner was ruined and we have decide not to come back.

I have eaten here twice recently and had restaurant quality food at reasonable pub prices. The chef is Italian and takes a keen interest in each customer. Limited indoor seating but a nice garden area - and friendly and helpful bar staff.

My wife and I visited the Brown Jug with a group of friends just for a drink as the chef was on holiday and the kitchen was closed. Despite this we asked if it would be possible to be served sandwiches. A kind lady duly obliged and visited a local shop for provisions and provided us with the sandwiches together with chips and a salad. Very nice they were too and reasonably priced! The craft beer hit the spot too! We all agreed we would return when the chef is back in residence. Highly recommended!

If you’re walking the Saxon Shore Way, this is right on the trail. It feels a little like sitting in someone’s front room and appears to be a converted cottage or possibly two joined together. They do very good hand pulled beer and the friendly staff are welcoming to walkers. It’s a dangerous narrow road so watch out for traffic for a few hundred yards after

We visit the Brown Jug often. The menu is varied during the week and well cooked by a very good Italian chef. The staff are always polite and very friendly. Sunday lunch is served between 12pm to 5pm and has a choice of meats and vegetarian option. Always hot and well presented.

I booked a table for four on a Friday evening, I had read the reviews on the place which in the most part were very complimentary and in the most part I and my family agree. The food was very nice and tasted good. The menu was slightly limited but it is only a small public house. When we first entered the bar (and there is only the one bar & entrance) everyone at the bar stopped talking, turned and looked at us which was very slightly uncomfortable. The dining area is in the same small area as the bar so when more patrons came in the bar got more crowded and as we were the only diners we felt a little outnumbered. The chef came out and took the orders then went back and cooked it, he then served our meals and took the money after. All in all the food was good but the ambience was not. It would have better if they could screen off the dining area so you don't feel like it's feeding time at the zoo. I live quite local to this pub and despite the good food I will not be returning which is a shame as the chef worked his butt off to please us.

Look's can be deceiving, definitely a case of don't judge the book by its cover. When you first pull up at The Brown Jug it look's like a typical old fashioned boozer. When you walk through the door the welcome is warm and friendly. Ideal for dog walkers. There is a good selection of real ales to choose from. A basic menu but something for everybody. We ordered the fish & chips and the Fritto Misto. When the food arrived it definitely had the wow factor, the cod was fresh, it was white and moist, the batter was very light and tasty. The Fritto Misto was amazing, Calamari, king prawns, salt & pepper squid and cod pieces, it was all cooked to perfection. Both dishes came with proper home cut chips which were real chips and not steak chips. The chef is Italian and he is brilliant. We will be returning to try more of the menu, i look forward to trying the pasta dishes.I will not hesitate to recommend the Brown Jug to other people. 10 out of 10.

We were trawling around for somewhere to have lunch and came across this place. It was a lovely warm September day and they have a garden where you can eat. I was kind of shocked at how great the food was. I'm a sucker for fresh ingredients and unusual items on the menu. Can't remember what my partner had but I had this amazing salad of mozarella, tomatoes and avocadoes in a mild balsamic dressing with fresh basil. Basically a caprese salad with avocadoes added. It was gorgeous, so fresh. We tried to go back a couple of weeks ago before we emigrate but it seems they are closed for food on Mondays and Tuesdays, so call first but definitely give it a visit if you love fresh original food. Highly recommended. The two meals and a large glass of white wine for me, soda for the bf all came to around £15.

Read about this place in an published newspaper article - pubs/restaurants to visit in Medway so thought we would try and we weren't disappointed. Pros: The Chef, Barman and Waiter were all friendly, professional and accommodating. Food was home cooked and very tasty, the prices are reasonable, has a lovely garden, the pub has a nice atmosphere. Cons: Car park was very busy and seemed to be a problem! I contacted them three times before arriving via the Facebook page and their website email address but received no reply so had to call to confirm!Anyway worth a visit.

A small group of 5 cyclists called in today for lunch.Located on the Horesham road, The Brown Jug, provides a warm welcome, and excellent food at a very reasonable price. The outside is deceiving, but go inside, and you will be very warmly welcomed. The food menu is also very interesting, and the food itself is fresh, served up in a very professional manner, and has loads of " taste", something often lacking in modern day cuisine. The food is also very well priced. The Brown Jug is good for a quick snack and also, for a full three or four course meal.Outside, in nice weather, there is a well kept beer garden, gated, so ideal for families with children. The bathrooms are also kept very clean. Most certainly worth the visit, and I will definitely return. Please note, I very rarely give 5 stars, but The Brown Jug is deserving.

Went Friday 6th and we had a main course of Hunters Chicken and Chicken wrapped in parma ham. Food was excellent and very well presented. Good price and plenty of it. When we first arrived "Landlady" was more interested in 4 locals at the end of the bar and called partner/landlord out of the kitchen to deal with us (he was very pleasant and accommodating). Young lad took our order and again very pleasant. Also in the bar was a young couple with a very well mannered son of approx 7. The whole ambience was totally spoiled was the F ing and blinding from the 4 locals and especially the woman. All this plainly in ear shot of the young lad. We would have stayed longer but the moment was spoiled by all the foul language which the "Landlady" failed to even intervene or temper. We asked for the bill and, although the young lad that served us asked if we enjoyed the meal, we got not the slightest communication from the Landlady or even a thank you for our custom. Not impressed

I looked on-line for somewhere to eat lunch on Sunday around Upchurch, before travelling from Hertfordshire. All the options in the local area looked pretty uninspiring from the outside - no chocolate box, characterful hostelries in sight. I opted for the rather bland looking Brown Jug for little better reason than we liked the name! I telephoned to book at an unsociably early hour on Sunday morning and was greeted with a warm and welcoming response, our table booking accepted. The Brown Jug is a village local free house, cask ales, and a pub food offering - small, simply furnished, immaculately clean. We were greeted like regulars and my disabled wife given every assistance. We ordered from the Sunday lunch menu - choice of roasts and vegetarian options. My wife had the breast of chicken and declared it the best she could recall. I opted for the leak tart which was brilliant. The 'usual trimmings' included generous portions of roast potato, broccoli, carrot batons, cauliflower cheese, mashed swede, as well as individual Yorkshires and savoury stuffing balls, complimented with separate jugs of delightful gravy. All were prepared to perfection. We would detour a very long way to return to the Brown Jug; Totally recommended!

Have been thinking about reviewing the Brown Jug at Upchurch for a while but wasn't sure if I wanted to share how good it is. This is a genuine local which serves a great Sunday lunch for £7.50. We have the nut roast as we're vegetarians but all the Sunday lunches look great. They come with generous portions of vegetables - on our last visit we had roast and boiled potatoes, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, carrots, swede and roasted parsnips. This is not a posh Michelin started dining experience, but it's a friendly pub and you'll never come out hungry!

What a lovely place I have lived near by for over 20 years but never been here. A friend recommended it for lovely food albeit within a small pub. Me and 5 others booked and whilst we were there they had two other tables of 6 - 9 in. The service was slow because of this but the food was so worth the wait. Good English food cooked beautifully. The atmosphere was also good with locals making us feel very welcome. I will be visiting again very soon. One hint though, it is small so if you want to eat it is best to book a table. Excellent value for money, we were very pleased with the total bill as it costs us so much more in the next village pub and the food is on par with it.
