The Brown Horse in South Lakeland

We have just returned from this lovely dog friendly Pub. Warm welcome, cosy log burner, attentive staff and an interesting menu. The cheese soufflé was outstanding as was the duck torte with cherries. Excellent fish and chips and a great wine list. We couldn’t fault this place and will certainly be back.

Yet again another fantastic meal at The Brown Horse - food was excellent as was the service. 3 dogs were all happy and comfortable too. Never disappoints up. Thank you for a lovely meal

We were staying at the nearby 5*Gilpin Hotel where we'd been disappointed in their 2 "upscale" restaurants, so came to this nearby inn instead. What an absolute delight! This is an old inn and pub, but there is also a separate restaurant with historic decor, and an upscale pub menu. Very good wine list (by glass, 250 cc, or bottle). I had a delicious creamy leek soup special (huge portion, beware!) with crispy fresh bread, and a hearty, flavorful fish pie (equally huge). My partner had a fresh Waldorf salad and daily special of plaice, delicate and nicely flavored. Sadly, we had to leave food standing as we were full and had no microwave at our hotel. Though we are foreigners, we were welcomed and service was excellent.
