Popped in for an early dinner with my wife, shared a tasty and very well prepared T-bone and Cornish sole. The pub itself is a quaint but modern spot that I would happily spend a few hours in downing pints, particularly on a rainy spring day. There’s a great inner courtyard that I would love to visit in the summer when the weather’s better. Staff are also great, very enthusiastic and welcoming.

The Broad Chare is a great pub for a drink or two. I went there with some friends who usually go there on Sundays. We went there on a Saturday evening and it was busy but still not too packed. I can definitely recommend having a drink here. The staff is super friendly and they have a great variety of beers and drinks.

Lovely traditional pub with friendly staff. Unfortunately the food and drinks didn’t live up to what we had expected. We found it on the top 50 gastropubs in the UK and were VERY excited, however found the food heavy, high priced and medium tasting and not worth travelling back for. The wine glass smelt strongly of dishwasher cleaner, which overpowered the wine.

My wife and I went for dinner here 23.03.24. WE ordered the fish and chips. The fish was Haddock which was nice and the batter was also good. The mushy peas and tartare sauce were also good. However, the chips were a failure, as they were what I can only describe as freezer chips from bag, the kind of things you feed your kids when in a hurry. They were NOT real chips, in other words they were not a potato that had been peeled, chipped and deep fried. These chips resembled oven chips, and at £4.50 a bowl they're quite expensive. Fish and Chips are the British national meal and we should proud of them and should not be serving 'plastic' chips up in a restaurant where you are charged £17 for them. Would i go back?.....no.

The Broad Chare gets great reviews so be booked before arriving in Newcastle. We were there on a midweek night and it was very busy - what recession? I started with 6 oysters which were on the menu as being served with a dressing of horseradish and dill. In fact they came with only a slice of lemon. I then had a second small plate of Haggis on Toast which was very tasty and well presented. My wife had to wait a full hour for her Ground Rump burger - which seemed rather a long wait. Our bill came to £118 for 3 and we added a tip of 10%. This is a justifiably popular place but when busy the standards slipped a little.

They said "gastropub" and it was. In a good way it had a pub like but the service was efficient, friendly and welcoming and the food was definitely a step up from pub food. We went for a drink downstairs first and then went to our table and the kindly allowed us to charge the bar drinks upstairs to the main dining room.

Really welcoming spot to eat with a relaxed atmosphere and great service. The menu is quite limited but that’s a good thing in my view - there would be something for most people here. The ribeye steak is beautifully done and, for me, the standout item on the menu. That said, the T-bone was also delicious and well-presented in that it was pre-cut ready for sharing. The desserts were also spot on and tasted fab. I had the rhubarb, meringue and cream which was delicious. The only item that we tried and didn’t like was the pot of prawns - they were far too small and not worth the effort of shelling. A great selection of beers and a fair wine choice if that’s your thing. Overall, highly recommended.

Consistently my favourite restaurant in Newcastle. We visited after watching the BBC’s Kitchen Cabinet being recorded next door. Not surprising that the panel on the show were sat near us and had chosen to eat here too. They serve food that on the surface appears simple, but is always cooked superbly, from the bars snacks to the dining room dishes. Great selection of drinks. They cook fish here particularly well but the small salad starters are always great too. Love the crab salad with fennel and kohlrabi that I had on this occasion. We need to try and visit more often…

It was only a lunch but everything was fine. Didn’t think it was stand out amazing but fine all the same. Top tip….check guests in downstairs as hanging around at the top of those stairs (with no where to actually stand) is a badly thought out process. Plus you have quite a few “sharing” dishes, including some drinks. Unless one is entertaining “romantically” the sharing option is a bit daft…

Rump steak Burger was very good ; it could have been excellent with just a little more attention to detail. The chips were a little anaemic, and the onion rings, bought as an additional side, were too oily to be pleasant. I did eat them but I regretted it later. Consider using a different type of bun for the burger, perhaps something with a local origin.

The Broad Chare has been consistently good. We’ve been coming here for about 12 years and it is hard to find a proper pub serving food of this quality. The beer’s good too. Terry Laybourne’s 21 Group is a huge asset to the North East, championing honest and unfussy cooking with very fine produce. And the high expectations of the staff have provided an academy of informed talent that wound otherwise not have existed. Well done, indeed.

The food came out my partner had a starter of haggis on toast which was beautiful the hp sauce gravy was spot on just what the dish needed. For mains I had the creamed mushrooms on toast with a few sides of the cauliflower and crackling all dishes were fantastic. My partner had the liver dish he loved it. We booked 2 weeks previously and the only available time was 5pm on a Sunday. With a 1 and a half hour time slot. When we arrived it was very busy and unlike the previous evenings meal, very noisy. We were seated immediately next to the kitchen entrance. Not my table of choice. For starters we ordered mushrooms on sour dough and haggis on toast with a HP sauce. Both starters were substantial but the haggis was over powered by the sauce. One main meal was topside of beef and the other the bacon chop with white cabbage. The topside was delicious almost melt in the mouth but the gravy was salty and should have been served separately instead of smothered over the entire plate. As for the bacon chop whilst very nice the bacon as was the gravy, very salty. Both meals didn't need any sides. The total bill with 4 glasses of wine came in at 108 which is about what I would expect to pay nowadays. Given the choice of the number of eateries in Newcastle I would not go again.
