This is our third time to dine here. Myself and my partner came here on our first date and have marked the occasion by returning for a meal on the day each year. Its a lovely, intimate and tastefully decorated room in the castellated section of a great house which was later converted to a hotel. Stained glass windows look out on to a moat. The restaurant is AA Rosette 2*. The food quality and preparation is faultless. The wine selection is very good. The prices are in line with what can be expected in an establishment such as this. The staff are very polite and friendly but not stuffy. The chap who served us on 4th October was a lovely guy. We both enjoyed our food immensely and they don't skimp on portions (it's not nouvelle cuisine) so much so that I skipped what looked like an excellent selection of dessert and finished with a double espresso. I don't know if I'll wait another year for our fourth visit. Its too good!

My father and I came for a Friday evening meal as we were looking for a regular quality local venue, I had forgotten about this little oasis and hadn't been since a wedding many years ago. We were both very impressed, beautiful scenic grounds and lovely country house internal decoration and ambience. The staff were very polite, friendly and attentive and by that I mean everyone from reception, bar staff, restaurant staff. We felt very welcome, the food was of a very high quality and reasonably priced taking into account the exception quality and venue location which is steeped in history. We will definitely be coming back again! Thank you for a lovely evening

We went here for a relatives birthday. Really bad service from start to finish. No water, had to ask several times for this. The wrong wine was served. The vegan options were appalling. Basically cauliflower as a starter and main. No thought or imagination, just a piece of cauliflower roasted with some limp veg. No potatoes with it so was still starving afterwards. One small bowl of carrots and cabbage between 7 people!! just ridiculous. No one bothered to clear the plates between courses. No cutlery was given for dessert. We asked several times for dessert options and the waiting staff said they would go and ask and never returned. It's 2022, loads of people are cutting out meat and dairy and this place really needs to move with the times.

This restaurant has a lovely setting in the old hall. It just a shame about the quality of the food. My starter was tasty but my partners wasn't. For the main course we both had venison which was over cooked and had a lot of sinew. The potato was virtually raw. I cannot see how this restaurant has an AA rosette restaurant, unless the chef had Easter off

This restaurant used to be exceptional. The staff and food used to be the sort of quality we have only experienced in Michelin starred restaurants (not something we can afford regularly). Now it is an over-priced chain restaurant that bears no resemblance to its former brilliance. The dining experience used to include canapes, amuse-bouches, starters, mains, pallet cleansers, desserts and petit-fours along with silver service and the food was mind bogglingly good. Now, for a similar price, it is a standard starter, main (pay extra for sides) and dessert. The quality of the food is no better than a relatively good pub and some of the staff (to be fair, not all) seem to lack even a basic idea of decent customer service. All of this may make us seem like we have rather high expectations... but for the price they charge it is not unreasonable to expect not to have to ask twice for cutlery to eat your dessert. As an example, previously (2014) we had the full range of courses mentioned above, the highest quality of food and service and I had a single glass of wine - total price £93 (£39 each for the food, £15 for the glass of wine). This time, we had bad starters (badly cooked scallops), a decent main course (the steak is expensive but nice), and a very boring dessert, plus my glass of wine - total price £126. This experience has led to the sad conclusion that we would not recommend The Bridge Restaurant to anyone. It is a dim shadow of its former glory.

This a reply I made to there customer service survey but have had not had any response to date 22/06/19. Thank for contacting me with regards to my dinning experience at Newhall Hotel on 26/05/19 booking reference BCG37ZZ. I have used Newhall quite frequently over the past 30 years for special events ranging from birthday, weddings and business entertaining as well as being a member of the spar for a number of years with drinks and afternoon teas. I must confess that I’ve always been in awe of the establishment and enjoyed my time along with ambiance of the hotel. However on the occasion of our 46th wedding anniversary we decided to celebrate with dinner at our favourite local hotel perhaps we would have been wiser to go to ASDA canteen. If one spends £140 on dinner surely a little service and attention is expected this was not the case. Had to ask for menu to browse over pre dinner drinks then had to carry our own drinks up to the restaurant never experienced this in the past, there was then faffing about the table. We were then seated either side at a rather large table for four in the middle of the restaurant virtually have to shout at each other across the table. We asked to be moved to a more suitable table which was empty which was agreed after checking there were at least three other table empty at that time and only two people came in after us. We were able to order quickly as we had made our selection in the lounge. We were offered water but had to wait and enquire after bread rolls, they didn’t appear to want to part with them. The waiter when bringing the main courses then tried to reorganise the table setting to fit a piece of wood with dishes of vegetables on it, I then suggested that he just left us with the dishes of vegetables and return the piece of wood back to the kitchen which he did. We ordered desert and coffee, is it now etiquette to serve coffee before dessert? we sent it back. Other observations were that there were table that had not been cleared. A ice bucket was commandeered from a vacant table but the bottle was taken out a left on the table much later the head waiter picked it up and gave it to another waiter to remove it but the table still remain littered and uncleared. A young couple came and sat at the table next to us it was ten minutes before they were given a menu they the sat there for twenty-five minutes twirling their thumbs before anyone approached to acknowledge them and take their order and offered bread. It’s obviously clear that Handpicked Hotel are being economical in their training budget with regarding staff or perhaps employment terms are not very attractive. If anyone had told me 20 years ago that Newhall would be serving beef burgers and fish& chips I would have thought that they were joking you obviously trying to attract a different type of clientele good luck. I think its a shame that the hotel with all it’s history and grandeur is not done justice. Your sincerely

We stayed at the hotel for two nights in february 2019. We dined in the restaurant on both evenings. We enjoyed our food both evenings made to a very high standard and complimented courses very well. The waiting staff are generally very nice and helpful although younger obviously more inexperienced staff seem to be doing all the work, fetching wine and drink orders as well as asking if everything ok. The same manager on both nights was far from friendly. He seemed to ignore our attempts at conversation and was on both nights seemed to be interested in selling more drinks. On the second night he clearly did not remember us as when he brought the bill he loudly and rudely announced we could not book the bill to our room as we had not left a credit card at reception. However if he had remembered us from the night before we had booked the bill to our room on a credit card!! Even though we thoroughly enloyed our meal we felt like we were treated quite badly. I did complain but a standard apologetic email from Charlotte Horler Operations Manager of Handpicked Hotel was quite simply an insult.

At the price point, and restaurant style, you would expect perfection. Unfortunately the meals could be described as “fine”, “not bad” or “it's nice” in addition we had to return one pudding. The starters and elements were really good. Exactly what you wanted (soup and risotto starters for your reference), but others at the meal evolved were just ok at best. The belly pork, wasn't fall apart melt in your mouth, but edible and the duck was fine. We returned a very lacking not very treacly tart (with no trouble at all, the staff member was fantastic about this) and the chocolate parfait was “nice enough”. I was simply left feeling underwhelmed, high expectations were not met. The three star review is based on the price point and my feeling of value. Customer service wise, they were great when I booked, answering my questions when making the reservation. The service itself was obviously very good but compared to the few restaurants I've been to at similar price points, it didn't blow me away like they did.

very excited to return to the New Hall on 09/02/20 for a surprise meal but absolutely fuming is an understatement of how we were treated from start to finish. Firstly the restaurant host can’t find our booking n asks us to look to see if we can find it (didn’t realise that I was the one working there) we are seated in the corner after some embarrassment we place our orders the waitress drops the bottle of wine n drinks spilling it onto my husband and other diners which they have to then move tables. The waitress runs away not apologetic at all leaving ice n glasses under the table (the assistant manager cleans this up after a time). The starters then arrive I watch other diners offered bread but not much else so I ask 3 waiting staff if I could have some to go with my mackerel /pate starter my husband eats his a long wait later after my plate nearly being taken as they presume I’m finished I speak with the assistant manager to complain. The bread finally arrives to be told the chef had to cook it. Note to the chef you need to cook more bread or warm those bought in ones. After eating my starter eventually the plate is taken for the waitress to come back to offer me bread I honestly thought Ant and Dec was there because it was beyond a joke. I cancelled the remainder of our meals which while still talking to the assistant manager arrive at our table not once but twice The only time we spoke to the restaurant Manager BOBBY and not the assistant was when he followed us to reception probably thinking we were not going to pay for what we had consumed. I had to approach him and no apology was given he said there was no booking made how disgusting my husband made that booking by phone on the Thursday and he was calling us liars. I can only presume some disgruntled member of staff took that call ( probably the maintenance persont) the staff haven’t got a clue. Too many Managers doing nothing and sloppy waitresses that couldn’t run a bath Cliff [-] (front of house manager) told us that Bobby was new to the job and he was settling in with the team. What a complete and utter farce. NEW HALL more like FAULTY TOWERS

Our meal could be chosen from the a la carte menu and our allowance was £39 per person (going over this allowance just meant paying the extra cost). I had vegetable soup, followed by Snowdonia Lamb pie then Lemon Posset for dessert, my partner had scallops to start, pot roast poussin on creamy mash followed by a cheese board. Side orders were green beans, mangetouts and peas plus cauliflower cheese. All very tasty and portion size was very generous (couldn't eat all of it!). My wife and I thought we'd try our newly acquired Taste Card in the Bridge restaurant at this rather splendid moated hotel. The card which we'd recently received as subscribers to The Times gets you two meals for the price of one at certain specified restaurants. We chose the three course meal for £39 a head and had a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc for £30 making our bill £69 all in as one meal was free with our card. Both of us enjoyed our choices. The food and wine was really very good. However, although the waiters and waitresses were very nice they were not as professional or well trained as we might have expected in this rather special Hand Picked 4 star hotel. As an example my wife's plate was whisked away before I'd finished my main course. The general ambience is ok but nothing special. It's a shame that the restaurant doesn't quite match the standard of the rest of the hotel and it wouldn't take much to put that right as the food is fine.

I first ate at New Hall in 1986/87 and returned for a second time last night as I was entertaining clients who live close by. I understand New Hall is the oldest moated building in the UK and the former home of Sir Alfred Owen of Rubery Owen plc. As one approaches, 'spectacular, stunning' are just about the only words one can use to describe the building. Sadly as soon as we entered it was down hill all the way. We had booked our table for 7.15 and arriving early were shown into the bar for pre dinner drinks. Sadly there were not enough chairs so we were escorted through to the lounge and shown to a table where afternoon tea had been served hours before and not yet cleared! We ordered a round of drinks and subsequently had to chase that order. We were shown through to our table and having ordered a bottle of champagne between 5 of us, we were soon having to order a second, only to be told we had had the last of that particular house! When our second bottle did finally arrive, it was placed in the bucket and after waiting and waiting I was placed in the position of having to open and pour it myself. The meal, though presented well was over cocked and one was left with the impression that the kitchen just could not be bothered. In short I wonder what the manager was doing or if the manager were even on to allow such sloppy service. No doubt I can return in another 28 years and see if things have improved. I certainly won't want to repeat the experience any sooner than that.

We had an amazon local deal for royal champagne afternoon tea here, which would normally cost just shy of £60 for 2 people. I used to eat at the main restaurant at this hotel years ago and it was a really elegant, gourmet, luxury place - today the building and grounds are still beautiful but the running of the hotel just smells of "being done on the cheap", it simply doesn't have the same feel anymore. The afternoon tea being a case in point - the sandwiches that start were pretty awful - the most basic, tiny little things that a beginner on a chef's training school could knock together in 5 seconds with their eyes closed - not 5 star hotel standard. The cakes looked better at first, but were NOT as described. The description is all about "homemade, seasonal fruit tarts, macaroons etc" but what you get is a lot of brown cake. They tasted nice enough, but again were nothing special. But to make matters worse, our suspicions about where the cakes came from appeared to be proved correct when we got home and compared one of the almond cakes to a packet of almond cakes we bought from Morrisons supermarket this week - 6 cakes for 99p! Sure enough, the ones served in the expensive afternoon tea at New Hall looked EXACTLY the same in every way, outside, inside, texture, everything - so I am about as certain I can be we were served cheap supermarket cakes. That is totally unacceptable. We will be contacting Amazon for a refund and won't be returning to New Hall. Should say the staff were very friendly, but again lacked that 5 star edge - the chap serving most of the food had an apron on that was covered in something - maybe it was just icing sugar but it looked filthy nonetheless! And the pathetic sandwiches were served on a wooden board that looked like it had been thrown out of the local pub after being used a few thousand times before to serve burgers and chips on. Very disappointing!

Me and my husband recently celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary and as a special treat decided to visit the Bridge restaurant at New Hall hotel and spa in Walmley. The restaurant boasts two rosettes and I can see why. Now this was not an everyday treat for us at £39 each person for two courses but they were simply delicious and value for money. We were greated like old friends at the restaurant reception, an attentive but not overbearing young man asked if we'd like a drink before being seated. We did so settling into the beautiful lounge area to enjoy a pre-dinner drink. We were also brought a small selection of pre-starters, I think they are known as amouse bouche. Anyway there were three tiny tasters of starters they serve. I can't remember everything about them but there was a venison and a salmon to try with mouth watering flavours all complementing each other. For mains I had the Herefordshire black beef with onions done four ways and a potato fondant - simply gourgous. My husband had the Welsh lamb with minted pea puree and potatoes. Both dishes had flavoured sauces dotted on the plate a la masterchef style. All very good, all flavours complementing the plate and all wonderfully presented. Our waiter was a frenchman Allain - he was attentive, polite and friendly in just the right combination. We declined desert but he brought us a pre desert to share with Happy Anniversary written on the plate which was a lovely touch. We shared a bottle of house red about £19, tres bon and departed feeling replete but not stuffed. We will be back and won't wait till anniversary no 29! All in all great ingredients made a great meal. A pity only three tables were occupied, maybe they were all in the Terrace restaurant which is cheaper - if the food is the same standard we're trying there next. and by the way don't get me started on the setting, this country house hotel is so beautiful you could really be in the countryside and not in Englands second city.

As it was my mum's 60th birthday, I wanted somewhere special for afternoon tea that also catered for her gluten free diet. We weren't disappointed. The sandwiches were tasty and the cakes and desserts were delicious, especially the inventiveness of the gluten free offerings, which, in other places, are mediocre at best. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. There was even 'happy birthday' written on the plate: a simple but special touch. Would definitely recommend.

Booked to go to Bridge Restaurant for special occasion and were staying at New Hall. Arrived to be told Bridge closed on Wednesdays - moved in to Terrace which is more of a Bistro. Bridge is fine dining. But have to admit, staff were excellent. Complimentary bottle of champagne, chef provided some tasters that were normally on the Bridge menu. Choice of food on the menu not as wide or sophisticated but cant complain. What we did get was excellent and service was very good. So what could have been a ruined evening turned out to be lovely thanks to the quick thinking of them staff and the excellent skills of the chefs. We frequent quite a lot and if you are looking for a nice relaxing restaurant with excellent food and lovely surroundings, this is certainly a place to consider.

Having booked afternoon tea for a celebration birthday the venue was pleasant although it was obvious this was crushed in around a wedding and the debris of a drinks reception littered the area. The staff were very pleasant and dealt with a complaint well. They showed genuine concern but it really was inexcusable to have made tea from a coffee machine! To suggest the machine was faulty and the water was not not enough. The stainless steel teapots were soulless and only warm! The tea if course did not brew. The sandwiches were very good, fresh and varied. The cakes were not traditional so if you want carrot cake fine but it is not really afternoon tea in an idyllic setting fare. Some may like the addition of a chocolate mousse type dessert with brownie in it but again it is not afternoon tea, is it? The reception staff unlike the staff in the dining area were mediocre and disinterested. This was a memorable birthday but no one would have known not even a welcome by name.

The hotel is always going to be the star here - a beautiful building that exudes comfort - when dusk falls and the lights go on its a stunning sight! Comfortable lounge areas with smoldering fires that offers a relaxing, homely environment to peruse the menu! The food is interesting and hearty - good portions and as someone who shuns vegetarian options this place persuaded me to try the sweet potato filo parcel and accompaniments for starter - very good! Though for main I went all carnivor again and had the Moroccan style lamb shank and couscous - which was just what was needed on the freezing, grey, cold (more like winter than) spring evening! The other half went for confit of duck, Venison sausages - strong, meaty and gamey - followed by cheesecake bound in chocolate and I the plumb pudding parfait - I think he beat me on the dessert as I recall! Wine was Italian and white and the service was friendly and homely - nothing stuffy just 'nice'... Value is exceptional - hugely impressed with the evening and wish it hadn't taken so many years to get here - its on our doorstep and I shall be on theirs again - very soon!!

I used to come here years ago with my parents and the service and food was impeccable, I recently had a meal here with work and it was average but I had one in the bridge restaurant with the family and it was embarrasing. there was no atmosphere whatsoever all the other customers were looking around as no one dared speak as you could hear others conversations, the food portions were hysterical I had to get a takeaway after they were that small, majorly overpriced and the service was dreadful. What a shame for a place that used to be amazing.

We ate in the formal dining room, at a super table by a stained glass window. The table was well set and the room was over 500 years old, so a smashing combination. The menu described the history of the room, which was a nice touch. The service was also formal, but at the same time warm. However, the restaurant wasn't busy so seemed to lack much atmosphere (save for a rather loud Gentleman who regailed the room in a Dudley accent of the various hotels of note he had stayed in): He was a Brummie version of Harry Enfields Loadsamoney character. Unfortunately, this type of restaurant will attract such characters for a 'special occasion with the missus' and do try and avoid tables nearby! The wine, especially the house Malbec, was first class and the chef did an excellent job with the food. The venison was tender and tasty, and the pork was perfect.A lovely restaurant for a formal dinner or, dare I say it, a special dinner with loved ones.

I have only been to New Hall once as a guest of a friend - so I did not have to pick up the bill - which is just as well, as it was massive. The food and service was everything you would expect from such a prestigeous Restaurant. I cannot remember what I had to eat but I do remember that it was absolutely excellent. The setting is exceptional and the ambiance in the Restaurant was sublime. Well worth a visit - if you can afford it.

The venue was absolutely beautiful... you walk along a little bridge over the moat and enter the restaurant (which is also a hotel and spa), with the most beautiful gardens!!It was raining, so unfortunately we didn't get to look around the gardens, which was a huge shame. But we will be returning to use the spa and see the grounds to their full potential. The only slight issue is finding the place- the back drive is not the correct entrance!!! Lovely evening and look forward to experiencing the surroundings again!!

Afternoon tea does not get much better than this. A 4 star historic moated castle house set in its own private grounds. Could not get a reservation for the fine dinning bridge restaurant on that night as it was booked up and could not accommodate our party size so we all went for afternoon tea instead Special place for special occasions expensive but what a indulgence. Thank you to all the staff for making us so welcome.

I have been here many times as it is not far from where i live, the last occasion was for a funeral breakfast, the food was snack form and was well presented by the almost invisible staff, like any top hotel the price of drinks is sky high ( £17 for three drinks), so if you are not on expenses take loads of cash.

New Hall does a very nice afternoon tea (add champagne if you are celebrating), including delicious sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, loads of interesting cakes and lashings of lovely hot tea (big choice other than " builders"!). You are looked after well and served your tea in a lovely room, the hotel is available to you for a quick look round and the grounds are delightful on a warm sunny afternoon to walk off a few of the calories.
