The Bridge in Eden

We go to The Bridge about 4 times per year. We are not very extravagant but when we do eat out we want it to be better than I can make at home. Any guest we bring with us all love it too. Every meal we’ve had here has been excellent! My favourites are Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé, The Seafood Linguini, my hubby loves the Fish & Chips (he has this every time he goes, lol) . My son loves the Squid starter and I also love the Pate when it’s on. I had a gorgeous fish course in spring but I forget the name of the fish which was the whitest fish I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend Bridge Bistro.

A fantastic chance stopping, will I am sure lead to more planned visits going forward. Food was superb, service, atmosphere and feel of the place all excellent. Having driven past this place often through its decline (which I now know to be 10years ago plus) this was great to see what a turnaround a place can have with clearly a great team behind it. Will most definitely be calling again and would highly recommend it.

Six of us stopped off here for lunch on route to York from Glasgow. We were greeted by friendly staff who took a drink order and then shrotly after our order for our meal accommodating our fussy little 2 year old with plain pasta as she was a little out of sorts. Just as our meal was being served my little one was sick on the floor, the ladies helped up clean up, gave us a bucket and let us hold onto it incase it was needed on the remainder of our car journey. They took my meal back to the kitchen to keep it warm whilst I went to the loo with my daughter which I thought was very thoughtful. Then when we returned the staff member came to check on my daughter and suggested a little flat coke would maybe help her if she was perhaps car sick and added that it also helped her son in the past. She brought out some cucumber in a little dish as my daughter had mentioned earlier that it was her favourite. The kind attitude of the staff really helped to make what could have been a diar situation much easier to deal with. On top of all that the meal was delish and everyone enjoyed! My little girl perked up during lunch and left with a smile on her face and a flake in hand from the girl who had served us ☺️ Great service and experience! The resturant itself is lovely, beautifully decorated and the toilets are immaculate! Will recommend to others traveling down south and hope to visit again in the future!

Just been for lunch today and what a pleasure it was from start to finish to receive such excellent, professional service. The food was outstanding, the tempura starter was crisp and delicious. Husbands cheese soufflé was to die for. The very helpful lady taking our order recommended the sea bass which I had which was cooked to perfection. The other main was tasty belly pork. Both dishes were of sufficient quantity and served beautifully. To finish off a portion of sticky toffee pudding and. 2nd spoon brought just in case needed. I can’t recommend this restaurant more highly and will definitely be returning with friends.

Absolutely appalling experience here. Stopped tonight with my 6 year old who was absolutely desperate for the toilet and 3 separate members of staff completely refused to allow him to use the bathroom despite me saying we’d order food if he could use the loo first. He was literally dancing and holding himself. Apparently it’s “unhygienic”, well guys what is unhygienic is children peeing in your car park and that’s what ended up happening. He was humiliated. Shame on you. We took our business to Cafe Sixty Six a bit further down the road and bought 2 meals. I’m more than happy to buy meals if we have to stop with kids, but The Bridge was an absolute joke. Folks, if you’re travelling on A66 I strongly DO NOT recommend this place. Totally unacceptable to deny a child / anyone use of a toilet. We travel this road regularly and will never, ever give them our custom now.

We are regular visitors to The Bridge. Lovely, airy space, spotlessly clean. Great staff and very luscious menu. Their blue cheese souffle starter is so good, I never want it to end. My other half loves the tempura prawns. Not a big prawn fan myself, but I love tempura batter - I might suggest they put a mixed tempura vegetables on the starters list. Their onion rings are soooo good. Very highly recommended.

We stopped here on our way to Scotland for a drink and toilet break with 2 small children. We were turned away because we we didn’t want food. This is somewhere we have stopped previously for drinks and food as it’s an ideal half way stopping point. However, we won’t be using again.

Called in whilst walking. They had just opened and there was one other customer in there. I asked if I could just have a coffee and they said “no we are only serving lunch.” There were at least 3 waiting staff all doing nothing. Why would it be so difficult just to serve me a cup of coffee - I would have paid for it!!! Obviously only get customer service if you spend a lot of money here.

We stopped as passing and had an absolutely brilliant Sunday lunch. All the meals were well cooked, tasty with plenty too! The beef was pink and tasted great. Yorkshire puddings weeee huge . We also had starters which we shared . Stage were friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. Would definitely stop here again if passing

On our way to Nottingham from Glasgow via the A66 we spotted this restaurant but with no time to stop we agreed it looked like a nice place to stop on our return journey which we duly did. We stopped mid way through a very long journey and entered the premises but were barely in the door when a lady informed us that they were closed. We expressed our regret and my wife asked if she might use the toilet. The lady refused stating again that they were closed. I fully understand that service was finished but there were still customers on the premises. Would it really be a terrible inconvenience to allow my wife to just use the toilet. My wife and I are both in our 70s. Shame on you.

The food is fantastic and the staff are very friendly. We have been dining here every time we are in the area. We found it several years ago and have never been disappointed.

Tried this Cafe on route to and from Scotland. What a gem when traveling from south or east and needing to break the journey. A very varied menu freshly prepared and cooked even Gluten free options where safely consumed. Fish and Chips highly recommend.A very comprehensive bar for the non drivers.

Top 5* experience. We were a family of 5. The staff were young but super friendly and attentive. Main courses (duck, lamb, pork belly) were very well presented, great portion size and tasted amazing. Coleslaw and vegetables sides were tasty too. My Eton Mess was again well presented and good amount of fresh berries. We ate early 6:15 so service was well paced. Would highly recommend The Bridge, nicest dinner I have had in a long time.

Fab menu. Had the cod and the fish and chips (gluten free). Both perfectly cooked. Our waitress Bethan was helpful & delightful.

Stopped off on our way home from a week away in Keswick and it just topped a perfect week off! Started off with a soup of the day which was so delicious and fresh, and a cheese soufflé which is the perfect thing for a cheese lover!! We then went in with burgers which just got better and better with every bite, they were the juiciest. We were also offered cheesy fries which again a cheese lovers dream! Dined at the Bridge on a Monday evening. Can not fault it. The staff are so welcoming and pleasant. They are very aware of social distancing and had appropriate measures in place. The food is outstanding everything freshly prepared and there’s plenty to be had....

Celebrated my parent’s birthdays at the Bridge, fantastic food, great atmosphere but most of all the staff went the extra mile on a busy Sunday afternoon to ensure we had a special time outstanding

Enjoyed a really delicious meal; really tasty, perfect sized portion, beautifully presented, lovely and relaxed atmosphere and fairly priced. The menu offers really good choice and options that you don’t find everywhere. The chef seems to know his ingredients and how to cook them to perfection with just the right amount of seasoning. We have eaten here several times and it never fails to deliver a really satisfying meal.

We’ve just spent the weekend at Whinfell forest Center Parcs where the on site restaurants are not the best quality. After a quick Google, this place came highly recommended and is only 8 minutes drive from the site. We called in for lunch on our way home and were very happy indeed. The food was superb and the puddings were some of the best we’ve ever tasted. We’d highly recommend!

Travelling back from Scotland, we decided to call for something to eat on a Saturday afternoon, and where so pleased we did. It was a lovely atmosphere, busy but not overly busy. The menu sounded lovely and I decided on Burger with my mum on the and soup. It was super tasty and fresh. Homemade and def worth trying, it was great value, a clean restaurant with immaculate toilets. I would recommend eating here and if lived closer I’d def be going back.

We were travelling home from my daughter-in-laws graduation in Lincoln University and we stopped here for some lunch.We had a mixture of burgers, chicken and a toasted sandwich.My burger was really good, it was a hand made Cumbrian beef burger. My son had the same but with the cheesy fries which everybody tried and really liked. The chicken and parsley sauce was tasty as was the toasted sandwich.The staff were very friendly and chatted away to us. The restaurant was very clean and had a Horse riding and country theme which was very tasteful.It is well situated on the A66 and was easy to find and had plenty of parking.If e are ever down there again we would certainly drop in again.

Wow.... love this little hideaway! The owner Louise, was ever so accomodating to any meal requests and all service was excellent. The variety of food choices was excellent for such a little restaurant and the service way above others we have experienced.There was a little buzz of people talking that Hugh Jackman had recently visited, so we all delighted in imagining he could walk in at any minute....I had a chickpea curry and it was stunning.Highly recommend.Tips:- I would book ahead - you don’t want to miss out on this beauty- Say hi to Louise - she is lovely!

We were travelling from Aberdeen, Scotland, to York for a wedding and we had an impromptu stop at the Bridge for lunch. The food was superb, Michelin star quality. The service was warm and welcoming. We had soup and the hens egg as a light bite. We enjoyed the Bridge so much, that we stopped on the way back to Aberdeen, and had the Lamb hot pot and beef Sunday roast, again the food was delicious. The waiter, remembered us from a few days before, great service, keep it up.

Having arrived too early at the Eden Pet rescue centre we set off to find a place for brunch.

me and some friends were driving down from glasgow to where we live (that you don’t need to know). We stopped here for a beverage so our friend could have a break from driving. I was disgusted in the treatment I and my friends got from the staff. Giving us daggers our whole stay. They refused to get me a tap water, which I asked for several times. I was very upset and left dehydrated all the way home. I won’t be going back there, yet again there is a small chance i will ever be in penrith again so i can rest easy.

Not impressed. Was greeted by a foul wench who demanded the blood of my firstborn son in exchange for a table. She also refused my friend McVood a tap water, which is a basic human right may I add. He was also denied (along with my other friend) use of your toilet facilities. I had to calm them both down, as their plan was to leave a dirty protest. We only stopped for a cup of tea, but were left with a hatred of your establishment so strong I am considering coming back just to wind you grumpy so and so’s up. The customer service was appalling. Tea was average at best, and the women running the gaff were butters.

Stopped here as I drove to the east coast, just needed a coffee and something simple and quick to ear. The Goats cheese open sandwich hit the spot as did the flat white, which like some places nearby, was a flat white!

We have eaten here several times and usually enjoyed our visit sadly the staff today ruined our lunch which is disappointing because the food was lovely. The sullen young woman who acted like she would rather be anywhere but there only smiled (Word used loosely) when we were settling the bill it’s a very rare occasion we don’t tip but sorry to say a tip is a thank you for good service. This is sad because the food we had was excellent if a little on the expensive side. Probably won’t be back as we did not feel welcome and prefer to spend our money where we are appreciated as customers not an annoyance.

Heading home from a week in Scotland and not wanting to suffer the motorway service station dross, we headed cross-country on the A66 hoping to find a better class of dinner. We did. The Bridge gave us excellent food, secure parking (we had our dog who stayed in the car), great service and a very pleasant ambience.

My second vist to the bridge,and exelent food and service both times,but only four stars as I do think it's quite pricy,but maybe that's the cost of quality ?

I visited on route home to Derbyshire from Glasgow. We had our dog with us so had to sit outside which was fine as this is a restaurant.

It is very easy to drive past this place because, being so close to the road, it doesn't look much from the outside. My advice would be to stop however, as the food is delicious. The decor is modern and tasteful and the staff are very friendly.

We live east of the Pennines and tend to holiday in the West (Wales/Cumbria/Galloway), so find ourselves driving along the A66 several times a year. After many mistakes, finding The Bridge has been a delight.

We set off from sunny Holmfirth on the morning of the 29th July 2019. We were headed to the West Coast for a short stay of static home and lakes excursions. We had it in mind that we would find somewhere along the way to grab a convenient bite to eat. So around 2.5 hours into the Journey we came across the 'Bridge Bistro Café ' in Penrith. I said to Janet '' its a roadside café, it'll do even if its greasy spoon''. How wrong was I . The food was simply out of this world. Every bite tasty to the core .Fantastic. We left feeling we had been treated to something special. I can honestly say nothing we had during the holiday all week after even came close!!! Many congratulations Bridge Café.

Great food and reasonable prices. We had the halomi fries and squid salad for starters, both were amazing. Then the surf and turf and lamb chops for mains, also both lovely. Then the brownie for dessert! The service was fantastic, really friendly and accommodating. Great atmosphere, a tasty ale on tap, and a varied wine list. Only potential improvement would be to add more draught ale options.

Stopped on way home for breakfast, which was fantastic, the eggs tasted like free range and all the rest of the meal was very tasty. The staff were friendly and efficient. Wish it was nearer home as I could visit more often.

What a beautiful place! Called in for a drink, ended up having some amazing food - not had food this good in quite a while! The hostess and owner was really friendly and advised us on some great local walks and highlights.

Tired and hungry after an active day in the Lakes, we were looking for a restaurant on the way home that would serve us decent food quickly. The Bridge did exactly this - we enjoyed our perfectly cooked fish and chips and the service was efficient and friendly. A great meal.

my partner and I ate here on Friday afternoon, ordered the shredded lamb shoulder with kale and potato cake followed by eton mess for dessert. absolutely lovely lamb dish and great value for money,eton mess was delicious too, young staff polite pleasant and helpful. a winning dinner! with two non alcoholic drinks the bill was less than 45 pounds.very good value for winner. we will return well worth a return visit.

Went for dinner with some friends this week, expecting great food, ambience and service and was not disappointed.

Never felt more uncomfortable anywhere as I did in this place. Liverpudlian woman was very rude to a young woman with a small baby, so much so that they left in tears. Had I read previous reviews we would never have stopped here as it seems this wasn't a one off. We left very quickly and found somewhere more hospitable.

Me llevé a un rincón tranquilo del restaurante, me puse una colchoneta impermeable grande, toallitas para bebés, toallitas antibacteriales, gel de alcohol, etc. y me cambié el pañal de mi bebé.

Llamamos hoy para el almuerzo y no nos decepcionó. Recibido por un joven amable que estaba muy bien informado sobre la comida en el menú. Parecía que había un problema con una familia que parecía pensar que era aceptable cambiar a un bebé en el área del restaurante en lugar de usar el sentido común y preguntar si había instalaciones disponibles, vimos a la gerente ir a hablar con estas personas, pero ella no los echó al estacionamiento como se mencionó en la crítica anterior. Para empezar, elegimos la sopa y luego comí el cordero, se derretía en la boca y estaba lleno de sabor. Mi marido tenía la salchicha, era muy sabrosa y muy bien presentada. Los postres son divinos. Sin duda volveremos en un futuro muy próximo. Una de las mejores experiencias gastronómicas en mucho tiempo.

Nos topamos con el puente, en nuestro camino a casa después de una estancia en los lagos. Estábamos buscando un lugar donde parar, alimentar al bebé y tomar un bocado rápido para el almuerzo, por lo que fue un placer inesperado encontrar un lugar tan encantador.

Paramos aquí de camino a Appleby - en - Westmorland. A la llegada nos saludaron y nos ofrecieron una mesa. Inmediatamente nuestra orden de bebidas fue tomada y dados menús. Nuestro almuerzo fue perfecto en todos los sentidos y el servicio fue bueno. El restaurante está impecable y los baños muy limpios. Sin duda volveremos cuando volvamos a esta parte del país?

Queriendo refrigerios ligeros, por fin nos detuvimos en nuestra ruta en The Bridge. Habiéndolo pensado durante mucho tiempo y "perdiéndolo" en el tráfico intenso, nos sentimos tan complacidos que finalmente lo logramos. Alrededor de las 3 pm al entrar nos presentaron menús de almuerzo e incluso brunch. La elección parecía muy tentadora, pero realmente queríamos que el café y la torta optaran por un excelente bollo, mermelada y crema, así como también por la torta de café. Estos llegaron rápidamente con bebidas y estaban muy bien presentados y muy sabrosos.

Fantastic stop off point on the A66 servicing good quality food at reasonable prices. Smart Attentive staff. Spotlessly clean. Small Car park with restive view if exiting to left onto A66. I just cannot fault them at all. No surprise that they Michelin recommended.

We travel by car from Scotland to the south of England quite frequently and this is a great place to stop for a break. The food is delicious (squid salad, twice baked cheese soufflé), The lovely girl who looked after us was friendly and efficient.

Coming from America, I've been really disappointed at burgers in the UK. All just slabs of meat on a bun-dry and flavourless. Because the menu was rather small, the burger was the only thing that appealed, and we are so glad we ordered! It was the juiciest burger we've had in years! Served with excellent hot fries and coleslaw (not recommended-why do they always add horseradish?!)

Popped in when passing on the A66 & so glad we did. The food was FANTASTIC. From sandwiches which my inlaws had to the liver & lamb me and my wife had. Definitely worth pulling in for for the food alone.

Stopped here for late lunch on way to York. Menu is extensive and although I was limited in my choice due to ethical eating habits and low carb requirements I found a few things to suit my needs. I had the salmon and it was not only delicious but generous in size and was given extra veg to compensate for no potatoes. Would definitely visit again.

We are regulars at the Bridge and again it didn't disappoint us. Being gluten and dairy free we can often struggle to find meals but not here. The waitress went through the menu and explained which items were dairy free and they now have GF beside items that are gluten free on the new menu. The food was delicious and we enjoyed a lovely evening.

Food was well presented and steak was cooked perfectly. Service was good. If you ever go hungry on the A66 then stop off here to fuel your belly. Excellent bistro with beautiful decor.

Went with the family for a lovely Sunday lunch. Staff all attentive and polite. A good varied menu is available. All food was served good and hot and in large portions. Children's menu also available.
