We had a very nice late breakfast here. Food and service were both excellent. We had plenty of space, maybe because it was a Tuesday morning. It was quite quiet but the atmosphere was good for us, not too noisy, but not the only ones in there!

A complete rip off. Yesterday, my wife and I had what they call a cream tea: £33 for two tea pots with Twining tea bags, two minuscule scones with jam & cream. What is shocking is not just the stupid price but how mean they are. Tiny scones and Twining tea bags that you can get at Tesco. If at least they served decent tea, but no. That makes me ashamed of being a Kew Gardens member. It was a busy Sunday and we had to wait 20mn for the tea. To be avoided.

Nice restaurant in Kew Garden Afternoon tea: Traditional afternoon tea, $82.5/2. But it’s not a waste. Not much of a surprise. Lunch menu: Average. Conclusion: If you want to check in, you can give it a try. Otherwise, just have a cup of coffee. Coffee is not on the menu, but you can order it. View: First class, facing the lake in front of Victoria Greenhouse. It's quite pleasant to sit outside on a sunny day. Service: good

If the staff are struggling to keep up with service then just put a sign outside explaining an issue . It’s quite unprofessional to have a couple of customers who have been served drinking nice glasses of wine and turning us away as something is wrong in the kitchen so no food . We wanted a drink only . We came back 10 mins later and more ppl were actually being served yet we still wasn’t allowed in . Thank goodness we ventured into Richmond to Sebastian’s

We showed our Kew Garden Afternoon Tea voucher to the waiter on the door to check we could eat there. We were seated outside for almost 10 minutes before we caught somebody’s attention again. This new waiter said that our voucher was not eligible for that specific cafe within the gardens… no real apology beyond “sorry it is his first day.” The next cafe we are currently in has run out of scones. So disappointing and overpriced.

Excellent afternoon tea. Excellent choice of sandwiches and cakes and the scones were as fresh as everything else. We spent a leisurely afternoon enjoying the company of friends. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the seating was spacious. Gorgeous views of the lake and Palm House. Sadly it was too hot to sit outside even though we were offered a table in the shade! The waiter was friendly and thoughtful and as I had ordered one Gluten free tea, I needn't have worried. Everything was brought seamlessly. We were not rushed at all. Thank you!

We had an afternoon tea voucher. We have experienced many afternoon teas and this was probably one of the worst. 3 of the 4 sandwiches were ok but the 4th was dry (almost like toast). Scones were nice but the rest of the cakes were soggy and uninspiring. The service was appalling. We waited over 20 minutes for the Prosecco to be served and the tea didn’t arrive until after we had finished our sandwiches and most of our cakes. When we complained, we felt that the waiter blamed us for asking for the tea to come out after the Prosecco. The venue was beautiful, we sat outside in the sunshine. But I will not be recommending Kew afternoon tea to anyone.

Delicious and well-presented vegetarian main courses spoilt by poor service. We had to go looking for a waiter to take our order and later to pay the bill. This was the reason we didn’t order a dessert. The excuse given that the restaurant was short of staff because of the summer holidays didn’t wash. This is a foreseeable event that an upmarket restaurant should be able to plan for.

Very elegant with good service. A rather small menu with limited choice. The food we had was all very good but at extortionate prices for what it was. At these prices, that had mains with no additional vegetables, there should have been a bread basket provided. One of our party has an allergy to raw tomatoes and told the waiter: her starter arrived with raw tomatoes.

We had the aubergine and the risotto. The aubergine wasn't bad though the pieces were inconsistent with some a bit too salty and others almost bland. The risotto was disappointing with the rice being really quite undercooked and the sauce not quite thick enough. Drinks weren't great but didn't taste terrible, we had mocktails. Tea was good though handle was missing from the teapot lid. All that said service was friendly although we were first told we could only sit outside before another member of staff was happy to give us a table inside when we asked. Atmosphere is nice, nice setting and interior.

Great place to stop by when visiting the Gardens! Overal it was an ok experience - you would expect more attention to details when paying £166 for a quick lunch!! Food- was tasty ( mushroom risotto, sea bass, aubergines) but the portions were unbalanced; too much of risotto but only fours small pieces of sea bass, if we didn't share the mains one of us would be full up and the other still hungry. Services- was ok! Our food order was taking at the right time. We had to wait quite a bit to get our table cleaned and dessert menu brought to us. The waiter was great ( young man) very friendly, asked about allergies or food intolerances... hetried to accommodate all our requests but the bar staff seemed too busy to make that extra effort- my friend just had a surgery and can't have alcohol, sugars or fizzy. We asked to make us a nice drink as we are celebrating her bday that is something else than an orange juice or water. Unfortunately, the bar staff wasn't able to help! We were served by 4 people all together and 2 were amazing, 2 were ok ( 1 only gave us the bill) and bar staff could do with some more training ;) Atmosphere- ok. Nothing extraordinary! Toilets were out of order. We'll probably come back again.

Met with some friends at Kew and booked a table at Botanicals for Afternoon Tea, the staff were helpful enough but not too friendly, service was reasonable nothing to really complain about, however the afternoon tea itself was rather disappointing, negatives first it was slim pickings for the price so its on the expensive side, the scones were small, the macaroon was not properly risen, the sandwiches were of a good afternoon tea standard and there were enough of the mini patisserie to be satisfying but I have had much better for less at for example the tea rooms in Bath, hence 3 out of 5.

My partner and I came to this supposed 'brasserie' to celebrate a special occasion on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Despite the lovely weather, we were taken aback to find the restaurant nearly empty. We had hoped to enjoy lunch outdoors, but the lackluster atmosphere drove us to seek dining options elsewhere and we only stayed for one drink. Oddly for a Saturday, we observed the staff turning away patrons who wanted a drink (it is not exactly like it was busy and they had plenty of seating inside and outside- I counted that they only had 7 tables occupied!). The male waitstaff who reluctantly attended to us were more engrossed in their own conversations than in providing decent service. Furthermore, a man who appeared to be the manager kept staring at us whilst speaking to the other waiter’s, making us feel distinctly unwelcome (I can only imagine it’s because we did not order any food). To add insult to injury, the price of £8 for a BOTTLE of Aspall was extortionate, and we were shocked to discover a service charge added to our bill for just two drinks (one of which we poured ourselves!). The outdoor seating, which we had hoped to enjoy, was in a sorry state - weathered and rusty, with uncomfortable, cushionless seats and remnants of old food littered on the dirty floor. Not at all what you expect from a restaurant situated in the middle of Kew gardens! While the location and view were the only saving graces of this establishment, the overall experience left much to be desired. I would recommend that you take the short walk to the surrounding area and explore the local restaurants.

Afternoon tea for toddlers… If you want to pay £37.50 per person (plus a 10% service charge) for a minuscule afternoon tea suitable for a toddler, the The Botanical Brasserie in Kew Gardens is the place for you. 5 finger sandwiches each that equated to no more than one slice of very thin poor quality bread. The fillings were fine but why would anyone put vinegary mint sauce in a classic cucumber and cream cheese sandwich!? Yuck! Absolutely tiny petit fours (cakes) that tasted very nice but were no more than a few bites each. And then the scones. Not much bigger in width than a 50p piece. I’ve never seen scones like that before and never want to again. They did taste like scones but were very crunchy due to being so small. Pathetic is the word I’d use. The teabag was weak (you only get one per pot) so we struggled to get a decent strength earl grey out of the pot. Normally an afternoon tea for that price would use tea leaves but not here! It was mentioned at the beginning that we could have extra hot water for the pot if we wanted but I passed on the offer as the tea was far too weak to begin with! The service was basic - we received the tea and food but had no more service after that. We had to ask for the bill despite staff clearing the table away. No one asked if we wanted anything else. Overall, the food tasted nice but honestly this place is a total tourist hot spot and is ripping off all their afternoon tea customers. Perhaps the rest of the menu is better value for money but I won’t be back to try anything else. The afternoon tea hasn’t always been like this - look at reviews over the years and the photos will show you how the size of the petit fours and scones has changed dramatically. But the price has pretty much stayed the same. We are Kew Gardens members so frequently visit throughout the year and have realised how poor the food and drinks in the restaurants have become over the years. The prices are extortionate, service is mediocre and the food is passable. Not what I’d expect from a world heritage site. I’d suggest you save your money for better local options like Gail’s or Caffe Torelli in Kew village nearby for a quarter of the price. I’m only awarding an extra star as the food did all taste nice and was presented well. Also the views of the Palm House if you sit outside are beautiful. Come on Kew Gardens, you can and should do much better than this.

I took my mother-in-law for high tea on her 80th birthday at the Brasserie yesterday, and was really disappointed. The quality of food was good, but the service and, in particular, the quantity, were poor. For almost £40, we got four ‘finger’ sandwiches - little more than 2 slices of bread, some petit fours and 2 mini scones. The vegetarian high tea ran out of some of the sandwiches (the onion bhaji) and were replaced with bean ones. The meat high tea had only ham and chicken sandwiches - the other two were vegetarian. I did not expect to leave a high tea at £37.50 pp and have to take a detour to a supermarket to get food. I appreciate the setting on the lake is gorgeous and the restaurant is lovely but I do not believe we should be leaving a restaurant hungry.

This brasserie is so outrageously expensive, and the food so unbelievably poor, that it is an exemplar of daylight robbery. You are literally paying to sit in a sweetly decorated room, with fairly charming waiting staff, listening to some alternative music from a crystal and incense shop. Forget the food. I ordered an afternoon tea for £37.50. That is expensive in its own right, but one might turn a blind eye if the vague scattering of morsels provided had any quality. Four tiny finger sandwiches were provided, lavishly described on the menu, but that were perhaps the worst sandwich (pieces) that I have ever eaten. Imagine solitary slices of the most wafer thin ham, tuna minced so finely it could be spread and atom thick, on the lightest and most airy bread, with so little taste or substance, it might even have been a figment of the imagination. Some tiny little sub-mouthfuls of cake-like objects were provided and two 'micro-scones' that you couldn't spread anything on because they broke apart. This eatery screams of disdain for its patrons, resentment of food itself, and a belief that human beings are there to be milked for their money. Absolutely terrible.

Slow service and overpriced but at least the afternoon tea was tasty! I decided to book afternoon tea for my mother's birthday as they had a vegetarian option available, but I sadly wouldn't go again. Although the afternoon tea itself was tasty, the finger sandwiches, cakes and scones were tiny and I don't think it was fair to charge £37.50pp. The service was incredibly slow - we had to wait 30 minutes to receive our pot of tea (which only catered for one small cup of tea each) and 40 minutes for the sandwiches/cakes. Surely cold food shouldn't take that long, and I'm almost certain they can't be baking the scones to order, so I don't understand why it would take so long! I will say though, our waiter was very friendly, attentive and even offered us a complimentary pot of tea to apologise for the long wait. However, I did notice a waiter mutter something rude under his breath when he walked away from a customer, which was extremely rude and unprofessional! To sum up, the afternoon tea is lovely and if it wasn't for the long wait and hefty prices, I would visit again as the view from the restaurant is stunning!

Like many other reviewers I cannot recommend this venue. I am a member and was able to get free entry for a friend, as we had heard that there was a new restaurant at Kew. The setting is wonderful and the restaurant has been thoughtfully designed. I have no problem in paying over £50 per head for a two course lunch if it is a special experience, but this was not. Most restaurants offer some form of lunch deal but here at the Botanical Brasserie they want to squeeze every last penny from you. £5 to pay for a vegetable extra - a few sprigs of broccoli - please! The food was nicely presented but tepid in temperature, as I assume it had been sitting around in the kitchen before being brought to the table. I returned both starter and mains to be warmed up. No alcohol and a bill of £115. I won't be returning.

The brasserie is very beautiful inside and the waiters were attentive. The food was visually appealing and tasty, although you don't get much. We were one of the first Afternoon Tea tables in the Botanical Brasserie that day, so we were expecting nice fresh food options. The initial service on arrival was good, and a window table was cleared for us to enjoy the view. Unfortunately it went downhill after that. Our Afternoon Tea was brought to the table. The teapots had one tea bag in them, and even after brewing for quite many minutes, the tea was very weak, with no flavour and no colour. Not at all like the "well rounded blend with a full flavour" that is advertised on their menu. The "finger" sandwiches were freshly made, but it would have been nice to have just a plain ham sandwich as an alternative to the Coronation Chicken filling, rather than ham with mustard, or a wider choice. The scones were warm, but quite small. The " Mini Tea Cakes" were very clearly defrosted frozen cakes, looking very sad, not freshly defrosted at all. These mini cakes were soggy, the "cream" on the tops of them should have been removed, the piped stars of cream were not fresh at all. The square of cheesecake had a soggy base and was not fresh-tasting. The blueberry sponge was just wet, not spongy at all, and sprinkling with dried flowers to cover the wetness did it no favours. I have attached a couple of photos. This single three layered tea offering was priced at £75 on the menu. Can you honestly say that it is worth that money ? The Brasserie appears to be a smart, pricey eating establishment, but for those prices I would have expected better quality and at least homemade fresh "mini cakes".

We visited for Afternoon Tea with our friends who had been gifted this as an anniversary present, and we were invited to join them. Lovely venue, and the afternoon tea was high quality in flavour, but the positives stop there. Sandwiches were limited to 4 small finger sandwiches only, and then the smallest two scones you have ever seen in your life. You can see evidence of this in the picture. Having experienced afternoon tea at a variety of venues, including The Ritz, The Savoy, and my favourite Carriages of Cambridge, I’ve never had so few sandwiches, or equally never not been offered subsequent complimentary additions, but not here. And to top it all, when we asked for more tea, all we got was, I can add more hot water!!! So you may think therefore, this wasn’t expensive, we’ll think again, it was £37.50 per person!! And they had the cheek of adding a £10 service charge. And you have to pay the additional entry fee to Kew Gardens as well (which actually is far better value). We were advised on entry that we might need a doggy bag as we’d get full quickly, quite the contrary, all members of our party were still hungry after this extremely overpriced and minimalistic afternoon tea. There are so many better options available out there, we’ll not be returning!

The most disappointment was a very simple small kid pasta dish at £12.50, a pasta and pesto sauce where the pesto was from the jar, not a fresh made sauce to match its price

Visited with friends for afternoon tea - very disappointing experience. Poor quality of food and definitely expensive for the offering - pathetic finger sandwiches and the smallest flavourless scones.

Had lunch here - a vegetarian puff-pastry tart, with (extra charge) broccoli spears. Everything was very tasty. I ate outside, overlooking the lake/ greenhouse. The waiting staff (in particular my main waiter) were very attentive and professional. I would eat here again. Inside the restaurant reminded me of the lobby of a posh hotel.

We were 4 adults taking a traditional afternoon tea on the balcony overlooking the pond and Palm house. The staff were friendly, very helpful because we turned up with only one of 2 Virgin Experience vouchers. Manos, thank you. We enjoyed tea and enjoyed Kew.

Wow! Overpriced for what I ate. A friend and I had lunch, risotto, chicken Caesar salad, one fries, two larges glasses of wine. £85, left feeling peckish, won’t be visiting again.

Amazing views of the gardens and greenhouses, lovely and amazing service. One of the best places to enjoy a good afternoon tea! The interior has a lovely charming design. Just a bit pricey

We had lunch here yesterday and were pleased we did. The food was lovely and wait staff was very attentive and friendly. They heard my husband mention my birthday and brought me a little slice of cheesecake. Altogether, a delightful place to pause for a meal while at the gardens- much better ambiance and service than the other Kew food service. I thought the dishes offered were imaginative and delicious.

Had afternoon tea... was not impressed. Scones were tiny very dry and almost burnt. The little cakes the cheesecake style one was bland, aldis strawberry cheesecake has more flavour. The flower one was soo moist (possibly defrosted) it fell apart when you picked it up. The chocolate one was nice. Was very disappointed for the money we paid

We are members at Kew Gardens and often visit the brasserie It has so much potential to be more welcoming to visitors The menu at the botanical brasserie is not great and niche so it's hard to find something basic that most people would like The menu is clearly intended for a more middle class visitor The staff at the botanical brasserie can also be a little aloof or dismissive if you are there for coffees or something smaller and simpler which is a shame as the rest of Kew Gardens staff are so very warm friendly and welcoming

We had afternoon tea for two, and chose the classic menu. Everything was delicious and the English breakfast tea was very nice. Couldn't fault the extremely polite service and the beautiful surroundings. A lovely place to eat for a special treat.

Had an impromptu visit to this place, had very low expectations, but should have made them even lower. The afternoon tea was exceptionally over priced for what you get especially the vegetarian option which consisted of two fragments of barely filled rolls and two small slithers of what could loosely be described as a sandwich. I guess you’re just paying for the location as the food is very bland and the interior of this place is dated. I’d suggest it’s best to bring some food in to Kew with you as everything is over priced and of very low quality.

My husband and I used a virgin experience day voucher for entry to Kew Gardens and Afternoon tea. We had a fabulous day exploring then enjoyed a wonderful vegetarian afternoon tea overlooking the lake and Palm house. Really tasty sandwiches and wraps followed by scones and cakes… all delicious! Service was great and quick and lovely decor/surroundings in the brasserie.. highly recommend!

Had afternoon tea and cannot fault, food was delicious. Knocked 1 star off as a couple of members of staff were obviously not happy that my daughter had visible tattoos, and felt they had an attitude and looked down on us. Younger staff were great though

The upmarket choice at Kew. Try high tea, either inside or outside, but remember that experience comes at a price.

We recently had a fine lunch here during our visit to Kew Gardens. We enjoyed the view over the pond towards Palm House, and the weather was sunny with a breeze at our outdoor table. The Courgette Tarte was exceptional, with a light and tasty puff pastry and delicious ingredients. We would definitely return.

Just to finished the day at Kew I booked Afternoon Tea. We arrived a little early and were shown to a table, we were given a choice of two. One had dirty glasses on it the other had crumbs it was dealt with quickly but shown the level of detail they have. The staff were polite and the service was fine. Although the quality of the food was pretty good there wasn't enough four small finger sandwiches each, ok there was enough scones ( well two small ones each ) and cakes but the mix was out of proportion. My tea was brewed with a tea bag, I guess I am being picky. At 37.50 per person it didn't feel like great value. Afternoon tea is supposed to be an experience but this felt just like a cafe serving nice sandwiches and some cake. we had a couple of cocktails and these were pretty good.

We came for lunch. While the service and atmosphere were good, the pesto pasta my daughter was served was shockingly tasteless, watery and overcooked. It was so egregious I felt insulted. The poor little champ managed to get through half of it before we tasted it. How a professional let that out of the kitchen is a wonder.

This was a lunch with friends to celebrate a 60th birthday. The food and drink were excellent and the service very good and attentive. The waiter even brought out a small piece of cheesecake with a candle on top for the birthday girl. A very relaxed event and we have promised to go back next year and try out the tea and cakes.

I pre booked the afternoon tea as a birthday treat and whilst the food was good, it certainly wasn’t worth £37.50 pp. The service wasn’t great, we waited 15 minutes for a waiter to attend our table and then a further 35 mins before we received a drink. The afternoon tea arrived and the waiter then went to find our drinks. I was also charged an additional £7.50 service charge that I wasn’t aware of. The setting is beautiful but unfortunately we were let down by the service we received.

Gorgeous day to have lunch here, we chose to sit outside. Wonderfully spaced, generous amount of seating inside and out. I chose to go for a hot dish which was still open ...devine roasted chicken in aromatic apricot sauce with roast veges and my sister had scone with clotted cream and ham; both delicious. Service was excellent and with a smile x Best cafe/restaurant in London in my experience xx

I’ve been going to The White Cross for over 30 years and it consistently offers one of the best pub experiences. Well trained, helpful staff, good beer and food that’s well prepared but not over elaborate. My go-to riverside pub for a cosy Winter drink or a full on Summer day out (it’s crowded on warm days but that doesn’t affect the service much). If you can’t deal with crowds go on a mid-week lunchtime - but the big summer evenings are really good fun too.
