We had a very basic meal, mackerel and salad, half tiny over cooked fillet, elements of the salad missing, ie tomatoes, my husband had the scampi and chips, meagre portion again and chips possibly either reheated or old as dry and dehydrated… as someone else pointed out I’m sorry but have to say everything felt a bit grubby.. for the prices, just not worth it left feeling robbed. Service very very slow but understandable as busy and appeared understaffed.

I hadn't booked so they initially turned us away as they had a large booking but just as we were leaving, the landlady called us back and sat us down. Me and my two children had lovely meals although I didn't see the specials board until after and wished I'd had one of those instead! We were rushed at the end when the large party was coming in so I did almost feel that I should've just gone somewhere else then. All in all, the food was tasty and they'd been friendly and welcoming but not as relaxing as I would've liked.

Busy pub Food amazing , however very slow service due to restaurant being understaffed, we witnessed one couple walk out after their starters and another table never served. staff behind the bar rude and not helpful with restaurant side Locals warned to check bill as pub often over charged tourists

A bit disappointing to be fair. We have been before and enjoyed it, recommending it to visiting friends. This time the barman was less than welcoming when we got there. We were then ignored for 5 minutes then eventually put in a small cramped room on uncomfortable seats, where we more or less forgotten about. The waitresses were distracted too busy talking to people at the bar and not really bothered if I’m honest. Service was very slow including our drinks. I ordered the special starter although we weren’t told about the specials, just left to help ourselves to grubby sticky menus. I had photographed the special board so I could inform my family what was available. I have only just realised that I only got half of my starter as there were missing elements! Dishes were plonked down with very little interaction from the waitresses. We spent a considerable amount of money for what we got, it wasn’t cheap and I have to say we won’t be back

We stayed for one night on a C2C trip there were 4 of us in 2 rooms. Beautiful very old pub with a quirky feel . Extremely helpful staff from start to leaving . Nice cold drink on arrival , lovely clean large bedroom, excellent food in the pub and very tasty breakfast the next day . The village is beautiful and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this pub to stay at if visiting the area or doing the C2C bike ride .

Not sure how this place has managed to get the high rating it has. The whole place is really tired and scruffy, as were the staff, particularly the barman with trousers that looked like they hadn't seen the inside of a washing machine for quite some time. The food was very disappointing too. Sorry, not a fan.

If you go here I’d recommend taking a man. The drunk bar men tried to engage in belittling and condescending speech at us (conversations work two ways) , I think they need to come into the 21st century and realise it is ok for two women to get a drink unaccompanied by a suitor as they were unwelcoming about serving us- one barman walked off with no acknowledgement and the second reluctantly put his pint down and said “oh I suppose you want a drink” with a false posh accent. Would not come back, I’m sure they love the locals and their happy reviews. Odd odd experience it’s really a shame because it is a beautiful location.

Popped along to listen to the live music and decided to stay for dinner; wish we hadn't bothered. We ordered fairly standard pub food, nothing that was too complex to make, and both meals were well below par. A mix of poor quality meat cooked badly made for a very dry and physically difficult to eat meal.

Unlike many Lake District pubs, this one is open daily even 'out of season'. It can do this as it is a winner with the locals - providing a warm welcome, a real fire, and typical but well presented pub food. Portions are generous, particularly for main courses, and local ingredients are used where possible. Visitors are welcome too; we came twice while staying nearby , and though we did not book, we were fitted in and were well looked after.

Friendly pub serving typical pub grub. One of us scampi and chips, the other the steak pie. Both were of acceptable standard but far too many chips. There must be so much food waste at this pub. I would suggest that they offered dishes with a smaller portion of chips. I would say we wasted 80% of ours and I hate food waste, it is so unnecessary.

A year on, we had yet another great meal at this friendly, traditional pub, at the same table and served by the same excellent, welcoming staff.A proper pub, like we used to have ‘down south’ years ago before the days of farrow and ball paint colours making all our pubs (what’s left of them) feel the same, let’s not go there ............Good food, great service. We’ll be back next year on our annual ‘Lakes holiday’ and hope that nothing will have changed at the Boot and Shoe. The fact that this pub is still running well after Covid is brilliant.

We made the right choice. The team here are all lovely people. So friendly and attentive. We were able to relax and enjoy a great meal and a couple of nights sleep. Very dog friendly. The food was good hearty pub fare, to a high standard. This is not a hipster gastro set-up, this is real cooking with great ingredients, well cooked and good portions. Breakfast was equal to dinner. Good choice of ales and other drinks. The pub has a good range of tables out front and a lovely garden at the rear. We were able to eat breakfast outside in the sun. The village is very attractive and enjoys great access to the Lakes, Keswick, Penrith and the Eden Valley. This was a proper English Pub stay, much enjoyed.

They have a beautiful restaurant and we got an awful table which seemed to me that they had either over booked, especially as it was a eat out to help out night or they just didn't care. Food was nice but didn't enjoy ourselves. Maybe if we had been seated somewhere appropriate we would of felt comfortable and stayed for a desert and drinks.

Visit 1 - we were taken to a cabin which was nice &spacious. A waitress took a drinks order whilst be perused the menu. My son &I had ribeye steak which was tasty. We all had a lovely time so booked the following Weds.On arrival we were taken to the log cabin again. Drinks order was taken & then the food ordered. The food arrived after a short wait. It was hot. Waitress had come to our table twice shortly after we had received our food to ask if it was alright and nothing wrong. As we had barely started eating the food we said yes however soon realised it wasn't so good. The gammon was fatty/tough. Child 1 asked me to cut their steak for them as they were struggling. A third of it was too tough to cut &the rest of the steak wasn't the easiest to cut. Child 3 hadn't started on their burger for some time. We encouraged him to eat his burger. His dad cut burger in half. Child 1 barely touched their steak so asked if she could have a half of the burger. When it was handed to her she showed it me. The burger was raw in the middle. A waitress came in to clear the table so we advised we weren't happy with the burger, steak & dried baked beans on a plate. She went for the manager who came to us. He was rude, shouty & unwilling to listen. He referred to dine out scheme as "discount". We said we're not paying for the burger as it was raw. He told us to go & not come back. We said calm down he didn't. At the bar he continued ranting get out get out. My advice - DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB.

Well it wasn't a great welcome as soon as I walked in with my 2 boys aged 8 the unfriendly woman behind the bar say "can you close the door" we had literally just walked in and my husband was just behind us. I asked if there were any other seats to have lunch as the only table available was right beside the door, her response was the other area is set up for the rugby starting so you wont want to sit there. So we sat on the table available by the door. We ordered drinks and the food at about 2.10pm The food was nice but rather pricey for what you got I basically got 2 pieces of cut bread with cheese and side salad and it was £7. One of my boys wanted more garlic bread so when i got the attnetion of the waitress to ask if we could order more she said she would need to check as they stop serving at 2.30pm and it was 2.34pm, she then came back and said that they couldnt make it. Unbelievable. At one point during our visit my husband went to watch the rugby and one of my boys went through to see him to be told my the woman behind that bar to sit down. The woman behind the bar needs to be trained on her customer services and perhaps told to smile every now and then

We came here as a last minute option early on Saturday night with our 7 and 5 year olds, after finding the White Horse was closed. It was a great choice, lovely old pub. We really enjoyed the meals, the Steak and Ale pie was fantastic and the Mexican Vegy Burger was also very good. Kids meals were good value, and they both enjoyed them. Staff were very pleasant and friendly, we will definitely go back.

A group of us were staying at Blencowe Hall and chose the Boot & Shoe as our meeting place due to it's location so close to the Hall. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch there, served by such friendly and welcoming staff. Several of us returned on Sunday afternoon for the live music and staff there drove them back to the Hall at the end of the show. Excellent service from wonderful staff!

Great pub, in pleasant location. Used by the locals and holiday makers alike. Food was really nice and served by pleasant staff. Would visit again if ever in the region. Had 2 meals (1 vegetarian option), and shared dessert.. maybe book in advance as most tables are reserved at busy times, but they will try accommodate at short notice.

We were a table of 4 on a Friday night and I'd advise you to book as it was busy. The food was great, very tasty, good size portions, and well presented. There was obviously a high level of care taken in the kitchen.

My wife and I were famished from our walk so we stopped in. The service was a bit fragmented. Didm't realize and we weren't told that we needed to order first, then sit down. This is probably common for a pub, but we thought we were in a restaurant. After sitting around outside, we came back in, ordered, and waited a reasonable amount of time for our food. Service was otherwise friendly enough - average. The burger was good, but wouldn't go back unless circumstances dictated.

Not what it used to be. We are just from down the road (50 mins away) and sometimes bring the kids up to the lakes at weekends. Normally eat at Dacre or penruddock but thought we’d try “The Boot”. We were a bit disappointed. Last visited in 2015 and food was excellent. Not this time. The main menu was ok but a bit old fashioned and the specials board wasn’t special. “Stew” and “pie” belong on the main menu not a specials board. Sunday dinner didn’t stand out and beef was a bit tough. But this can sometimes be the meat rather than cooking so haven’t marked down for that.

Dined alone on a business trip at this pub. It is a down to earth pub/restaurant and has not been mucked about, it has a flagged floor which I think is a must in country pubs as you can walk in with your boots on and not worry about carpet. It has a good ambience and locals who use it for drinking, and overall it is very friendly. The barman was very personable and welcoming, and the waiting staff were excellent too, they just got on with their job very professionally. I ate the whitebait to start (£6) which was a stand out dish, they were cooked to perfection and served with a generous helping of salad and mayo. Then I had the burger (£13) and this too was excellent with crispy bacon, a brioche style roll and 4 large onion rings on top. The chips were hand cut and it also came with salad. I had no room for desert. I drank two of the ales on cask, the first was Black Sheep, and the second was Lancaster Blonde. The Lancaster Blonde was spot on, the Black Sheep was also a very good pint, but (and I drink a lot of beer) was probably just a little beyond its peak. I noticed when the locals came in they were all drinking the Lancaster Blonde too, so it's probably that turn over which gave it that edge. But for the avoidance of doubt there was nothing wrong with the Black Sheep, it was just 9/10 rather than 10/10/ Overall a friendly no nonsense pub serving food at reasonable prices and with a good atmosphere. I would definitely visit again.

Having encountered the ‘boot’ recently, I suggest anyone considering visiting this establishment reads the lower star ratings. There is a common theme of unpleasant experiences with landlady/staff.

Myself and my partner came to the pub Friday evening. We enjoyed a few drinks, then left. We were staying near by in different accommodation. The next afternoon, we went back to the pub and asked the young girl serving us if it would be possible to have breakfast. (Breakfast seemed to only be for guests staying in the pub) The young girl politely responded that she would ask her boss.

We had been here a year ago and came back with friends for a Saturday night dinner. We had booked a table (advisable) and the 5 of us had a great time. The menu is wide and varied. The atmosphere was excellent and the Guinness very well kept. We noticed that the Pub regularly have bands during the week. Shame we would miss Steve Gibbons on the Monday. Would thoroughly recommend the Boot and Shoe.

We had booked 3 nights here to round off our honeymoon your of the Lakes, and we wernt disappointed! Traditional old characteristic village pub. Our room was so cute. Maggie greeted us on arrival and helped us to our room, she was lovely and attended to our every need during our stay. The owners (I think we're called Ben & Jan) were so friendly and lovely, Ben was really quite funny. The waitresses and bar girls were so pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was great and hit the spot to set you up for the day. We ate there on 2 nights, both times the food was lovely, my husband had fish, it hardly fit on the plate! Others were Cumberland sausage and mash, scampi and gammon, all perfect. Really did love this little place, lovely village too. Watched the race horses in the morning heading for the gallops from the stables. Room 4, lovely, only. down side was the shower was just a hand held one in the bath, but we got around that easily.

Couldn't believe the selection of different coffees on offer for a cafetiere and so reasonably priced just like the delicious scones. All the advice about the area and where else to eat was extremely helpful. What a delightful friendly place!
