Definitely an improvement on our last visit. The menu and prices were great and food great. Nice to see families there. A relaxed vibe. Service was a wee bit slow, but I think the sunny bank holiday increased the number of diners. Would return

We had a brief wait to get seated and then our drinks orders were taken quickly. This is were is all went wrong. We placed our food order and waited an hour only to be told no order had been placed and we had to wait another 10 minutes, ended up leaving as I honestly didn't have the patience any longer. So can not say what the food is like because ours took that long to come we ended up going elsewhere. Only to be served within 20 minutes of waling through the door

We stayed here overnight during our John Muir Way bike packing adventure. The location on the marina is super convenient and pleasant. The service of all the staff there made this stay really enjoyable. Andy at front of house was stand out and even helped us source a hose to clean the bikes and a place to keep them safe. The restaurant team were super helpful too. The rooms weren't fancy but super comfortable, clean, warm and spacious. We'd stay there again for sure.

The carpet in our room was not fixed properly and wavey, it was also not vacuumed. There was no flat sheet and only 1 blanket. Because it is a “guest house” we could not contact anyone for help. At 7 am the kitchen began playing house music. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

We were visiting the town for a few days and decided to try the Boathouse, as it’s in a lovely location. On arrival, we were seated quickly, but the waiter had to clean the table after we sat down – a bit surprising, as the place wasn’t particularly busy. I ordered the bruised beef ale pie. Unfortunately, the pastry was burnt. I mentioned this to the waitress, who didn’t seem especially bothered, though she did say she would pass the feedback to the chef. That said, the meat and filling were tasty. We ordered two desserts, which were both nice, and to their credit, they gave us one on the house due to the burnt pie – the least they could do, really. When we looked at the receipt later, we noticed that we’d actually been charged more for certain items than the prices listed on the menu, which suggests the menu may be outdated. At that point, we decided it wasn’t worth going back in to say anything. Overall, the experience was disappointing, and we probably wouldn’t return.

We went here on Mother's day weekend about 15:30. We were so disappointed in the quality of the food for the price we paid. Firstly there was no steak pie,I ordered a Rib eye steak which was tasty enough but the chips were like mini chips with 1 tomato on the side. Fish goujons were obviously frozen with again no additional garnish. For £68 for this plus a couple of drinks,I feel that it wasn't value for money. No passion or thought was put in to the dishes. I feel that if the chips were hand cooked/ with a better side of vegetables then this would have been more fitting for a rather pricey Rib eye at £24. The actual setting is absolutely gorgeous and feel with better quality food than we had it would have been a better experience. Very peaceful and tranquil setting looking out to the marina. Availability and quality of the food could improve.

The twin bedded room we stayed in was cleaned to a high standard and spacious, with enough room for a very large crate for our dogs. The room had everything we needed, although the lighting could be better.. The food in the restaurant was cooked well and presented nicely , the staff very friendly, efficient and accomodating. Plenty of early morning / late evening dog walking areas alongside the Boathouse with the added bonus of the Canal and access to the Antonine Roman Wall nearby.

Was a nice stay at the end of the week, with good food, and the surrounding Antonine Wall walks are lovely. Unfortunately during our stay the fire alarm went off at 6 in the morning, with no staff arriving to turn it off until 7. That said staff then had no keys, causing a further wait in the rain. The rooms are warm and comfortable, with the on suite ones providing a mini fridge for evening beverages. The food was very filling, and the staff were very charming, overall a weekend well spent.

Beautiful venue looking out over a small marina and with pleasant walks along the canal. Food is just average and the service is poor when busy. Staff are pleasant but appear inexperienced and there seems to be a high turnaround of employees. Most recent visit (some time ago), the frier was broken. No fish, no chips, staff not too bothered. Felt a bit let down. (November 2024 Update) Seems there is a new restaurant manager and he is really efficient. Some new staff too that are really good. Went for lunch and was seated quickly, order taken and dishes brought quite quickly despite being busy. Food still very nice, and views are fab. Definite improvement. Will go back

A real treasure to find. A beautiful location at the marina by the canal. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The double room with en suite was large, comfortable, clean and homely, very quiet with a lovely view over the marina. Loved the nautical theme right down to the wallpaper! :) Dinner and breakfast were excellent.. we had the steak frites for dinner, which was the smaller steak portion on the menu and just enough for us after a long day travelling, and the breakfast was the best that we’ve had in a hotel for a long time. Prices were reasonable and the restaurant was relaxing with views of the marina. We would definitely stay again!

Met with friends for coffee and cake, which was lovely. Only downside was a few dogs inside that were off lead, and approached us quite a few times, and we're barking at other dogs in the place. One of our group is extremely frightened of dogs, so this was stressful. As a dog owner myself, I'm fine with them - but if I take them into places, they are always on lead.

Can't comment on rooms as only used the restaurant. A beautiful location and setting, and it's my friends safe, comfy and favourite place and she loves the staff who look after her. However, for what we ate and drank for lunch was way over priced. I've never paid £3.10 for a pint of soda and lime cordial before unless in a swanky bar in London, it's usually £1/1.50 is standard. We had Caesar salads and this consisted of some chopped lettuce, 2 thin slices of cucumber, 3 croutons and 1 cherry tomato cut in half and little dressing. We added the chicken for £2.95 each but there wasn't a lot and it was pale and unappealing, £15.45 each for the salad. A portion of skinny fries each was £3.25. They thankfully didn't charge for the hot water and lemon. The total bill was over £40 - very overpriced for food that was underwhelming. I can't fault the staff, they were lovely but I didn't want to say anything in front of my friend. If I can make a suggestion, please review the price or the portions and quality. This could be a really great place to have lunch but next time I think I will stick to drinks only. In comparison this evening my husband and I stopped off on the A1 at a random service area and paid £32 for an exceptionally enjoyable burger with all the trimmings, steak and ale pie, a pot of tea and a pint of orange juice and lemonade (this drink was half the price of the soda and lime too).

Wow, where do I start with this review. First of all the chief should be sacked instantly!! The food was dreadfully, and to be honest I can normally eat anything. Food was cold, and I mean cold !! The service was acceptable my the young guy, the other girl behind the bar is so lazy and did nothing to try and help out. Took over 2 Hours, to get a plate of chips and two drinks !! Food was sent back only to be heated in a microwave, chips were uncooked and limp. Whoever owns this business needs to act quickly, just read the reviews everyone's saying the same. Your chief and I use that term lightly, has obviously no pride in his work. The worse food I've seen, and other tables were also putting food back also. It's a real shame because it could be a nice place.

Had our first dinner at the Boathouse since the change over. I had looked at the menus before booking and really fancied the market menu as it offered a something a bit different. When we arrived we were only given the normal main menu but I asked if the market menu was available and the waitress happily brought it over. The jackfruit starter was delicious. I’d never tasted it before but the Asian style of flavours used in the cooking were great. Both myself and husband had the sea bass along with 2 extra sides. If you have a good appetite I’d recommend getting an additional side (unless you want room for desert.) We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and will definitely be back.

The refurbished restaurant is great. Our second visit in 2 days. This time we came with friends for dinner. Good choice but the menu food was more pub style than fancy restaurant. For a Saturday night the place was quite quiet. We all managed to find items we liked in the menu. The service (Kenny) was professional and friendly. Food was delivered promptly and was excellent quality eg the rare steak was rare. Flavours were first class. The men had a beer as starter and this was excellent. The negative points - it would be nice to have some variation in the menu eg a daily special. The wine list was very short and not of highest quality - a better wine list for those interested would raise the tone somewhat. The Rioja we had was OK but we would have preferred something of higher quality, and of course higher price. There was a limited range of brandie eg one cognac and no Calvados. We enjoyed our experience and will be back but it is a pity that thenew management are not attempting to raise the range and quality of their offerings.

The food was well presented and tasty. The service was a bit slow at times as the poor young waiter seemed to be mainly on his own serving quite a few tables. But he was well trained and polite. The bar woman, though seemed to be oblivious to the amount of noise she makes - disposing of the bottles noisily and grinding endless ice for cocktails. We had arrived appreciating that the music was at a nice low level so that we could talk to each other easily, but after five minutes the music was increased considerably making it rather difficult for us to hear our waiter. Also, the day before our meal I did go in and book a specific table in a quiet corner as my father is a bit deaf and also in a wheelchair so we wanted easy access to the toilet. The manager Russell, specifically put it into the computer table plan in front of me and promised it wouldn't be changed. When we arrived for the meal, we had been moved round the corner into a busier area, because a birthday party had been put in our spot. Now, I did query it, but as my parents were with me i did not want to make a fuss in front of them and spoil the evening, The new table was equally nice and by a big window overlooking the canal as I had wanted, but it was noisier and did affect the evening's pleasure. Other than that, it was nice evening. Would love to go there again when it's warm enough to sit outside and enjoy the spectacular views of the hills and canal.

Living near by walking/cycling along the Forth and Clyde canal to the Boathouse is a luxury especially on a nice day. We visited on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and were all looking forward to a light lunch after our walk. We found a table outside which was well suited as we had a dog with us and asked the waiter for some menus which he provided. After making our choices we went inside to order to be told that they were not serving hot food outside and that all tables inside were fully booked (bearing in mind there were only about 4 tables inside occupied). We then asked if we could have cold sandwiches or other cold items outside to be told that no food apart from ice cream was allowed outside. We decided to order drinks as we had to prepare for the walk home and when the same waiter came out with them we asked why he had given us menus in the first place if we couldn't have food and he said to us he thought we just wanted to have a look and that the reason for food not being available was due to fridges in the kitchen being broken. How they were still managing to serve food inside then if they had to chilled storage for the food was beyond me. The staff seemed under trained and unable to cope.

One of the great pleasures over the past few years has been cycling 20+ kilometres along the canal on a sunny day, having lunch at the Boathouse, and then cycling home. Imagine my disappointment today when we were turned away because they no longer take "walk-ins". In the time it took us to lock our bikes, be turned away, and unlock our bikes again six separate parties of people were turned away FROM A COMPLETELY EMPTY RESTAURANT! This shows complete disdain from the management towards regular casual customers. We won't be back, and I can only assume the restaurant will suffer a slow, quite, lingering death if it continues to turn customers away.

After a walk along the canal we took the kids in to get some breakfast. Although the breakfast was delicious the timing wasn't great there were only 2 other tables in and yet we had to wait for ages to get our meal, which meant we had to rush to eat it. I thought with it being under new management they would have reviewed the pricing but it is still very expensive and I don't necessarily think the food justify s the price.

The Boathouse used to be a great restaurant, with fabulous location, good food and good service, although was definitely not the cheapest in the area. Over time the food and service deteriorated and the prices stayed high. It wasn't surprising when it closed. So when it reopened, we hoped that it would be back to its original form and booked a table for the first weekend. The place hasn't changed at all inside. The menu has and I love my food but really struggled to find anything I wanted to eat on it. The service was fine at first but once we had placed our order, it wasn't the best. Wine glasses were brought to the table but the waitress forgot the wine. I tried to catch her eye but she was too busy chatting so I eventually got out of my seat and went over. I said we were still waiting for our wine and go a What? in return. I asked three times until she understood what I was saying and said she had forgotten. The food itself wasn't great and was poorly presented and we thought the bill was very expensive for what it was. We then struggled to get a taxi and the Manager asked us to leave so he could lock up. When we said we were struggling to get a taxi he said "yes that's what happens around here". All in all it was a disappointing evening. I wouldn't say we will never go back as we do like the location but there are better and much more reasonable places to eat in the vicinity so our return will more likely be a beer in the sun than dinner.

Nice and comfortable setting. The Scottish breakfast with haggis (not for the faint-hearted they say) is great. The posh breakfast looks quite small and can only be recommended if you are not very hungry. I personally think that the music is too loud and too fast. The selection of pop, jazz, soul and rock music may be fine under other circumstances, but it just doesn’t go with the nice scenery and the calm canal. Do we really need music for breakfast?. On some days, they unmute the TV, which is not better. Staff is friendly and helpful. Juice for breakfast is not on the menu but is offered on demand.

Visited for a wee break for two nights. Staff were very welcoming & attentive throughout our stay. Basic gastropub type menu all well cooked & presented. Lovely spot beside the Forth & Clyde canal and only 20 minutes from Glasgow. Worth a visit.

Had an enjoyable meal at The Boat House. Prawn Tempura delicious,Fillet Steak and side good. Great setting on a Summer Evening with lots of activity (canoes) on the canal. Would recommend. Pricey but good.

A really pleasant restaurant by the marina at Auchinstarry. That's Kilsyth. Relaxing atmosphere and tables set apart so no crowding. A good choice of menu and the food is lovely with generous portions. Pricing is reasonable too.Can recommend the haggis and the burgers! Only dislike is the use of wooden platters for some meals. Staff are very attentive, one even made a special effort to find some food for a friend with dietary requirements. I'm there at least once a month.

Was out for a late lunch / early dinner, nice surroundings, polite enough staff. Ordered the fish pie from the main menu, food arrived, looked good. Now I’m no chef but I’m sure if you are making a fish pie, with prawns you would remove the tails. Well to my surprise tails still on them all. With every mouthful you have to remove the tails with your fingers, then found a black hair in the dish. I questioned one of the staff if this was how the fish pie was normally served, she couldn’t give me an answer, but assured me she would speak to the chef. We waited, no response, asked another member of staff when they presented the full bill. We waited until a senior member of staff came to the table with a reduced bill, less my fish pie cost, I questioned her about the meal, was informed it was a mistake. Disappointed that I had to push this myself and that the customer service wasn’t what I had experienced on previous visits.

We visited for lunch as we have a few times in the past. On this occasion it was very poor standard. Firstly, arriving reasonably early, quiet time

First time visitor for breakfast which was a bit pricey but quality of food was very good, although my beans arrived cold which was rectified with extra toast being provided for the error. Staff were friendly enough. The chairs were quite worn and tatty which I felt brought the place down a bit but overall the breakfast was extremely good so would go back again.

Delighted to arrive just in time for breakfast as they stop serving it at 11:30. It isn't a cheap breakfast but it is a good one and as it was a nice day we were able to enjoy it outside. Served quickly with a smile.

Visited for lunch. Can't fault anything. Was welcomed and seated by a lovely young lady. John was our waiter and was exceptional. He is a credit to the restaurant. Portions were very generous. Food was also exceptional. All staff were pleasant and helpful. We will be back.

The worst experience I have ever had in any restaurant! The Boathouse totally ruined our 29th wedding anniversary. Having discussed this with staff on the night and with the manager several days later (by email as she refused to discuss in person) we were left very dissatisfied and will never set foot in the Boathouse again and will certainly never recommend this place to anyone.

Had a beautiful meal with my Husband and twin boys celebrating the end of thier school exams. Our waitress Naimh was so helpful and polite , unfortunately her shift ended before we personally got to thank her, although I managed to pass on our thanks to the manager at the time. As a family we will be back again. Thank to Naimh for making our experience so pleasurable, I hope your kindness, manners and respect is noticed with the work place. Heather laswson

We have used The Mint on and off for over 15 years and we seldom have any complaints. The last couple of times we have went there we went for the braised beef with mash, and I’ll tell you what, if you order it you won’t be disappointed, it’s absolutely delicious, the meat is so tender you can cut it with a spoon, the mash is smooth and the red wine sauce is delicious 😋 So try it out. Well done chef 👍💕
