The Boathouse in Bath and North East Somerset

We came as a family for lunch and we were terribly disappointed. It has a fantastic view of the river and all the great makings for an excellent pub, but unfortunately the food was very poor. We ordered from the lunch menu, and we were served a dry club sandwich with hardly any chicken and a halloumi wrap that had minimal halloumi. The children’s meal was bigger than the adults and full of grease. We expected a decent meal for the price. It’s such a shame as this used to be a fantastic place for food.

Dogs welcomed. Outside seating with heaters. Bedroom tastefully decorated. Ample car parking. Close to park and ride for easy access to Bath. A most enjoyable experience staying

Very disappointing. A lot of the items weren’t available. The fish and chips wasn’t great. So much was left of the plate and advised later they had none left either. Sadly a lovely place, great staff but kitchen needs to be looked at.

Our waitress was absolutely superb but the roast dinner was very poor. Soggy roast potatoes, burnt Yorkshire puddings, watery gravy, boiled-to-death veg, and over-cooked beef as tough as old leather.

Had fish and chips the chips were so hard it was inedible I complained to the waitress and explained I couldn’t even cut chips with my knife they were burned! Fish was ok but very greasy

Excellent everything. Stopped in for lunch as we saw it when passing. Welcoming, great drinks, had a couple of started served outside. All hot, fresh and tasty. Great drinks all at reasonable prices. Staff were attentive, polite, knowledgeable and service was rapid. Will return again without doubt

Yet again in dumbfounded with some of the reviews about The Boathouse. The setting food and service was excellent and the food was fresh and plentiful We visited The restaurant as part of my birthday celebrations during our visit to Bath and found the restaurant to be very eclectic and comfortable and the waiting staff polite and attentive. Our food and drinks were of an a very good quality and I’d recommend The Boathouse as a place to each and have a very enjoyable meal. Many thanks to the staff for a great evening

I wish I had read the reviews first. Five of us came here for lunch. Even though it's a big restaurant and empty tables, they clumped all the customers together in one section, so a bit noisy. £10.95 for a glass of Pinot Grigio is steep! I'm a vegetarian and the choices were limited. I opted for the Mediterranean vegetable tart. Unlike the non-vegetarian options, I was told it didn't come with any potatoes, chips or vegetables. Why? The meat pie came with mash and salad, the salmon came with new potatoes and veg and the battered fish came with chips and peas. So, why does the vegetarian tart just came with some tired watercress and couple of tiny slices of red onion? That's not even a salad. I had to pay extra for new potatoes, how unfair is that? They were not even nice as overcooked. The others said their meals were fine. The service was so slow from the start with us eventually having to call out to waiting staff. Even at the end when we chased for dessert menus, two ordered coffees but no one came back to ask us what desserts we wanted, so we didn't bother. I came home disappointed and a bit hungry! Lovely setting, but I won't be returning.

Food and atmosphere were ok. I ordered a large glass of wine, not from picking off the menu, just asking the waitress and expecting something basic, and got charged £11 for it! Personally I think that is extremely disrespectful and basically just ripping off customers. I won’t come back here again, and I’ll avoid any other Hall and Woodhouse establishment.

We had a 2 nights stay here with breakfast and dinner on the first evening and won’t be returning to either stay or to eat. Our room overlooked the river which made it very attractive but that was about it. When we arrived after a long day travelling there was no one on reception - the reception area was in the pub which is okay in itself but after paying £470.00 for 2 nights (and that didn’t include dinner), we expected more. The chap who took us up to our room was friendly but I had to ask him to carry one of our bags up the stairs. The room, oh dear - grubby is an understatement. The twin beds were uncomfortable, the carpets and seat were heavily stained, the balcony had dead plants and empty pots with old soil in - all very unloved. The bathroom was clean and spacious. The dinner and breakfasts were very poor quality food and everything seemed disorganised with staff who were rushed off their feet and doing their best. The conservatory where we had breakfast is a beautiful room but again, unkept with plants that weren’t cared for and all desperate for water and repotting.

My girlfriend and I walked here from central Bath, and went in unbooked to see if we could have Sunday lunch. I'm glad we did! Despite being pretty full, the bar service was excellent & we were told to ask the manager if there was room. There was, at a lovely table by the window overlooking the river, and we both ordered the beef. The meal arrived quickly & was the best Sunday lunch I've had in a long time. Everything perfect, the beef medium and plentiful, great roast potatoes and fresh vegetables that the kitchen had taken the time to cook, rather than the hot al dente stuff you usually get. 10/10 all round, and all the staff were superb.

We were bought a night and breakfast at this hotel as a birthday present. The room was great with all expected facilities and a nice balcony overlooking the river Avon. The breakfast was excellent, I had a full English (see photo) and my wife had granola and fruit. Both were well presented and tasted delicious. We also had a few drinks in the evening whilst watching the rugby final and a coffee after a walk along the river, the next day. The food and drinks were all excellent, as was the service and ambiance in the pub.

A quaint little bedroom with a sizeable balcony over looking the Avon river. The noise of the motorway remind us we are on the hedge of Bath and in the countryside.The bed is very confortable, bathroom well equipped with plush towels. £140.00 a night mind you…. In the pub/restaurant, don’t expect much service, I had to clear the table I wished to seat at. The waitress was busy looking pretty but inefficient so were the waiters, disappearing in the kitchen for a long period of time. The fish and chip is a large portion, the hoki fish comes from New-Zealand!!! My appetizer, baby shrimp cocktail with a ketchup/mayo combo arrived after my flatiron steak, frozen fries, large black mushroom and greenhouse tomato. The mixed green salad had to wait for the dressing, so did the dry burger for the mustard. The beef and ale pie was adequate.the breakfast was very efficient, more attentive staff, excellent croissants.

Excellent stay at the boat house . Loved the decor and room 2 , great views and very comfortable beds . Staff were friendly and made us very welcome . Had late supper out in the terrace and breakfast in a lovely conservatory..with good service all round . Clean , comfortable , friendly pub in such a lovely location overlooking the river, right next to park and ride. Recommend for sure

This place should be THE pub to go to in Bath with their location. The colonial, New England feel is wasted on complete poorly run business. The brewery should have a massive rethink. The place needs a complete overhaul, but maybe start with a deep clean and proper staff training. Such a shame.

It was a beautiful sunny day and I was waiting for a friend who wasn't due for an hour or so. I sat outside and used the QR code at the table to order a glass of wine and some chips. The wine came reasonably quickly, brought by a polite young man. So far so good! After in excess of 20 minutes wait, the (overpriced) chips arrived, brought by a different waiter. I politely asked for salt, pepper, ketchup and mayo (which didn't seem unreasonable!), only to be told that I had to go up onto the decking to get these myself, like some kind of 1970s cafeteria, while leaving my belongings (and chips getting colder by the second) unattended and out of sight on my table. And the point of 'table service' was what exactly? Cutlery did not appear, and I could not find any anywhere. I am not sure what this establishment thinks 'table service' is supposed to be. The only exception to the 'get your own from over there' was the mayonnaise, which I was told was kept in the fridge. A jar was brought over with a large spoon. No small dish was given on which to put mayo or ketchup, meaning either the spoon had to be used on an ongoing basis, or the chips drenched in mayo/ketchup. I assume the same pot of mayo is used by numerous diners, which is both unhygeinic and unnecessary. To add insult to injury, using the QR code means deciding up front whether or not to pay a tip. Stupidly I opted to do so. My recommendation... If you are simply ordering drinks at the bar and sitting outside, then this is an ok place to go. If you want food, go somewhere else. Needless to say, when my friend arrived we left immediately and went somewhere that understands customer service.

Called in for a couple of pints while staying at Bath Marina. Found the place a little bit soulless although there were plenty of people ordering food. Had to ask for a cloth to wipe the table down (inside) as it was soaking wet. Suspect it may be different experience sitting outside in the sunshine compared to sitting inside on a rainy day. Drinks quite expensive.

Unbelievable Visited website only to find no main menu and no prices . How the hell can you encourage people to come along ???

We have visited this restaurant several times over the years and whilst it is a very pleasant location on the side of the Avon river, over the last years there is always a problem with the meal, however our latest visit almost everything was wrong with the exception of the waitresses who were both happy and knowledgable. We chose beef croquets and ham Terrine for starters. For mains we had Nduja chicken and the Fish Pie. The croquets were overcooked and the beef filling was reduced to an unrecognisable and tasteless pulp. The Terrine was "alright". The Ndjua chicken appeared to have missed out the Ndua completely and very dry, this was ordered with garlicked new potatoes, I would have though, in late June, to have been this years crop and not old. The Fish pie was a awful, dry and little amount of fish. A disaster.

Great disappointment after regular visits to the Duchess of Cornwall, also owned by Hall and Woodhouse. Starters acceptable but mains were very poor. Flat iron steak did nit seem as described. Asked for well done and advised not to ask fir this as it would be like shoe leather, so asked for medium. Steak was like shoe leather and rare. Accompanying pea sprouts / salad were dressed with something very bitter (had it become so after time). Plant burger was dry and fairly unpleasant. Salad in bun was tired and with little or no crunch. Sauce was unpleasant. Service was the wrong side of acceptable (including server asking uf wd wanted to see the pudding menu when collecting our starter plates). I would have viewed the menu as overpriced but definitely very bad value for money I terms if what we received. We did look at the pudding menu and considered having coffee but cut our losses and left.

Positives: Plenty of vacant tables and room to move inside. Parking spaces available. Food available to order. Negatives: payment by card only - restrictive not everyone has a debit or credit card, even now. Should be able to take cash, but it is a Head Office decision. Sadly this just helps banks decide to keep closing branches and alienates some members of society. Food (we had double cheese burger and fries). It seemed expensive at £16.45 ( it tasted similar to the burgers you buy in a well known US chain of burger restaurants). Our son visited Five Guys recently during the same week and had an ‘All the Ways’ cheese burger fries and a drink for £17.85. We bought drinks separately. Ok, Five Guys didn’t have a river view, granted. The small jar of mayonnaise given to me had a brown splodge of something in it when I scooped a dollop of mayonnaise and put it on my plate, so goodness knows what that was? I didn’t eat that. We saw the young barman lick his finger and try to wipe some smudge or mark off the bar and have fed that back to management. Didn’t seem particularly hygienic. There was no hand sanitiser in the dispenser on the wall between female and male bathrooms. We thought the young barman shouldn’t have carried a full tray of empty glasses in one hand and three empty glasses in the other hand at the same time. Seems a tad unsafe - especially as he’d only just dropped a wine glass off the tray onto the decking outside (whilst clearing empty glasses from the tables) which smashed and had to be swept up. There’s a risk carrying glasses like this could cause injury to the barman (if he were to trip or fall) or customers if they were to get hit by smashing glass. Was a memorable visit, for not all the right reasons.

Terrible service! We waited an hour between ordering our food and its arrival! Tough when you have hungry kids with you. Location is beautiful, staff ok and it was clean. Such a shame as we had hoped to be regular diners.

Most of what we wanted wasn’t on the menu so we took what the barmaid recommended. £60 later, we get half a starter and another that’s nothing but fried batter. We get the other half of the starter and then the mains come out. My partner couldn’t eat hers as is was too over cooked but I ate their poor excuse of a burger because I’d have eaten anything at this point. Anyway, if you want this standard of food without the price tag, go find a scabby weatherspoons.

The staff were very nice, unfortunately the food wasn’t. It’s in a great setting, and a lovely looking venue. The fish was over cooked and wasn’t fresh, the ravioli portion was small and very greasy. The triple cooked chips were delicious, I just wish there had been more than 8 on my plate. The manager on duty didn’t seem to grasp that my response to how the food was, ‘just okay’, wasn’t a compliment. Won’t be returning, there’s a much better hall & wood house run establishment in the centre of Bath, or in Melksham.

Happy little find whilst waiting for a work appointment. Decent parking and a park and ride near by with EV charging if needed (just pay the £2 if park and ride if not using the bus - Google the car park and it comes up) Warm and cosy, nice little details and fires. Reasonable price for fish and chips, decent range of beers! Service was quick and efficient, looked good for many other tables with Christmas pre orders, food smelt fantastic… Fish was light and crispy, chips are delicious… would maybe like a few more of those but, it did leave space for a wee slice of Christmas pudding and custard. Clean and tidy, dogs welcomed and nice atmosphere, very happy to return and really appreciated the fire after a cold day!!

I had a really great experience at The Boathouse. The staff were warm and friendly and very accommodating with our needs. We had the sea bream, which was also wonderful. The views from the deck are lovely and the ambience is nice. Would go again!

Estoy en eso, dijo que lo siento mucho, nuestra comida llegó y todavía no hay bebidas, tomó 30 minutos para obtener nuestras bebidas.Nuestra comida fue servida sin cubiertos ni servilletas. !Nos dejaron nuestras bebidas en la factura, pero aún así nos fuimos muy decepcionantes.

El plato principal estaba muy bien preparado, pero lamentablemente después de eso las cosas se fueron cuesta abajo. Se nos pidió que dejáramos la mesa para la próxima sesión. . . aparentemente solo nos asignaron 1. 5 horas. Sentimos firmemente que deberíamos haber estado desinformados de esto cuando hicimos la reserva. No ayudó que el servicio fuera muy lento y que no hubiera tiempo suficiente para un desierto, incluso si quisiéramos uno. No suelo salir de mi camino para escribir críticas, ¡pero The Boathouse se merece una para la cena de asado del domingo que tuvimos hoy! En primer lugar, su personal es un mérito absoluto para su restaurante, atento, amable y educado. Nos ofrecieron agua para el perro al llegar y nos sentamos afuera en el área de la terraza con el caballero del frente de la casa explicando cómo están funcionando las cosas en la situación actual. El servicio fue rápido y eficiente. Ambos optamos por el rosbif, que estaba cocinado a la perfección, agradable y rosado aún, las verduras eran variadas y abundantes y las papas asadas estaban crujientes pero súper esponjosas por dentro, ¡como deberían ser! Los budines de Yorkshire son enormes y son ilimitados, uno era suficiente para mí, pero mi compañero tenía otro, mucha salsa y una jarra extra cada uno, ¡lo cual es una ventaja! Sin duda volveremos, cuanto antes mejor, aunque iremos por el pollo, ¡ya que también se veía increíble! Comida deliciosa y un hermoso entorno, la renovación ha hecho de The Boathouse un lugar favorito para visitar ahora.

Alojarse en un Airbnb cercano en Charmouth Road aproximadamente 0. 7 millas de The Boathouse reservamos dos cenas. En ambas ocasiones disfrutamos mucho de nuestras comidas y del hermoso entorno relajado. La segunda noche comimos en el gran invernadero. Como miembro de CAMRA durante 30 años, disfruté mucho de las cervezas de barril de Hall y Woodhouse (Blandford Dorset). En ambas ocasiones tuvimos el hummus y pan plano, el cóctel de gambas de mi esposa estaba muy seco, pero mi cordero kofte era excelente. El excelente servicio y las vistas de los jardines y el río Avon donde se ponía el sol. ¡Maravilloso! Recomiendo totalmente este pub.

Estábamos alojados en un campamento cercano, el restaurante está a solo 5 minutos de camino. . . . reservamos en línea. . . . y admite perros. El menú es bastante limitado debido a Covid. . . . pero tuve el pescado con patatas fritas la primera noche y la hamburguesa en la segunda. El pescado y las patatas fritas es excelente con una maravillosa masa crujiente y la hamburguesa estaba ligeramente rosada por dentro. . . de nuevo muy bien. Lo que realmente me ha sorprendido leyendo críticas anteriores. . . . es solo 3 estrellas por el servicio,,,, que fue realmente bueno. . . . . natural no forzado

Really friendly staff. I had the vegan red lentil Dahl.... It was delicious. In fact best one I've eaten out in ages. Great location and a lovely garden right next the toe path. Dog friendly too.

This place is amazing. Room is cosy with a large balcony and has a great view of the canal. Restaurant food was superb and the staff all friendly and helpful. Best bit about the whole weekend was the tia Maria coffee made by Luke, I am a conasuer of liqueur coffees and this was one of the best I've ever had (and I've had a lot). He even gave me the secret to making them so good and will try it when I get home. Will definitely be returning. I love this place.

Not a very good view of river --they did let us eat outside tho' --clean area friendly staff but fairly ordinary pub food would return

Birthday lunch for my 80 year old Mum. Exceptionally friendly staff considering they were sweltering in the heat. Prawn cocktail starter and steak mains were delicious and Holly who served us was an absolute gem. Can’t wait to go back.

Fab location, great food with interesting vegetarian choices.Very friendly and efficient staff who remained cheerful despite the extreme heat they were working in.Had a very relaxed lunch. Felt very safe as social distancing super effective with hand gel readily available. Very Dog friendlyWill definitely visit again soon

What a fabulous find! Friendly, efficient and fantastic food. The Boathouse has certainly got on top of the measures needed to ensure it is COVID secure which have us confidence and peace of mind. Clear distance measures, smart phone ordering but still friendly and efficient staff who couldn’t do enough for you. We were impromptu lunch diners who were accommodated easily and attended to by lovely staff. Perfect place to while away 90 mins (the table limit) on a sunny summer afternoon! Thanks Will definitely return if we venture your way again!

Been to this pub a few times and it’s generally always good, however I felt compelled to write as we recently went out here for the first time since lockdown. It was a really good experience, the signage and the precautions are all very clear and it felt very safe and well thought out. Food was about the same as always maybe a slight drop in quality but to be honest given the situation it’s expected. The best part was our waitress Holly who was excellent and made this very odd first dining experience a good one. Thanks, we’ll be back and continuing to support one of our local pubs

The restaurant is situated in a lovely area with a picturesque view (although a lot of it is hidden due to bushes). The food is really delicious and presented well. However the staff are incredibly rude and unhelpful. We visited as a family but were paying separately so I ordered on the app and the others ordered at the bar, there food came and ours didn’t even though we ordered first so we questioned it and received a very abrupt unhelpful response telling us we shouldn’t have ordered separately. We politely explained why we did and that I ordered ours first so ours should’ve arrived first anyway and asked if the waiter could check, he finally did after some convincing and came to say the order didn’t go through on the app. I again explained it had as the payment had been taken and I had an email confirmation so he went back inside. Eventually later he came back once everyone else had finished and said the kitchen would make it now but with no apology. When it finally came it wasn’t what I had ordered but we were in a rush so we took it and then left. If the staff were more attentive and helpful this restaurant could be lovely... such a shame!

Friendly staff and tasty food. Enjoyed sitting outside and watching rowers slide past on the river, as well as balloons drifting overhead. Delicious beef pie!

Visited this week for a family lunch so of course we booked ahead. Met at the door quite happily by a staff member but that's where it became a little concerning. We are all clear and knowing of the current pandemic but with staff wearing no face coverings whatsoever when every pub/restaurant I know, their staff are. Wasnt made aware of a one way system of kinds, vaguely informed of the toilets but had to imagine where they actually are. Service was not as I'd expect from a company as Hall and Woodhouse, still taking our seats when we were asked for our drinks order, if only I'd memorised the drinks menu before id arrived. Food order was taken but 1 guest simply ignored and we had to ask our server to come back. Food was of good quality but the whole experience was let down by poor waiting service from a server who clearly doesn't like his job and his attitude showed. This experience won't put me off returning but I will expect an improvement the next time.

We had a Birthday treat there yesterday.. They have really worked hard to achieve a safe environment for their patrons during this crisis and we would like to say "thank you" for making us feel safe ,yet to be able to enjoy this lovely pub.. We will be back very soon..!Thank you...

Pero escuché que Hall & Woodhouse lo había comprado y renovado y me había aventurado a almorzar. Que transformación. Todo, desde la decoración, a través del servicio, hasta la calidad de la comida fue impecable. Definitivamente de vuelta en la lista de lugares habituales. Gracias a Hall & Woodhouse y a la gerencia y al personal por rescatar lo que merece ser uno de los mejores pubs de Bath.

Recientemente reformado, bien hecho. Solo había sido reabierto un par de días cuando lo visitamos. El personal era amable y se esforzaba por complacer. Eran geniales.Lo bueno es comida de pub, lo que uno esperaría de una cadena, pero fue agradable, no tengo quejas. El pub tiene una bonita vista del río. Vale la pena una visita.

Como retroceder en los 20 s, pero con una mejor plomería.Un hotel encantador, con balcones que dan al río, y los barcos de esculpir. Fácil acceso a Bath en autobús o automóvil, sin quedarse en la parte concurrida del centro. El restaurante tenía una cena y desayuno encantador. No almorcé, pero el ambiente del restaurante es excelente, y desde la cena y el desayuno, solo puedo imaginar que el almuerzo también es genial.Obtenga una de las habitaciones con vista al río y disfrute. . . .

Visited for a sunday lunch to celebrate my daughters birthday. Table booked for 2.30pm, the staff had lost our pre order requests. We had to re order, some choices unavailable. We then waited an hour before the food arrived. The food was nothing special, vegan choice of meatballs was bland. Vegetables were warm and chewy. One side order did not arrive. Staff were uninterested and very busy. We made it clear we were not satisfied but staff still remained disinterested, a very disappointing visit.

Excellent service, friendly staff who could not have been more helpful and polite. Food was delicious and served speedily and by someone with a smile. We will definitely be back!

This is a restaurant and hotel combined in a pleasant location along the Avon River. There is a varied menu with lots of old favorites as well as more recent favorites. We had the roasted chicken leg and the beef pie. Both were expertly prepared and served piping hot. Plenty of beer, ale, cider and wine available. The staff are super friendly and the prices are very reasonable.

Overnight break on the way to Cornwall. All staff helpful and friendly. Room spacious with lovely view over the river. Both evening meal and breakfast excellent value. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Enjoyed a lovely Sunday roast - crisp roasties, lots of yummy veg. and a huge Yorkshire pudding. Followed by an elegantly presented dessert. The staff were very attentive and the pub atmosphere bustling and friendly.

Situated next to Newbridge park & ride on the banks of the River Avon.Well set out establishment with various places to eat and drink which include outside overlooking the river.A good selection of drinks and food is available moderatly higher than some similar establishments.We ordered four different rounds of sandwiches and they arrived quite quickly and was very satisfying.If you want a relaxed drink or meal then this establishment fits that criteria.

Pleasant setting adjacent to the river and park and ride. Easy access and parking. Outdoor terrace, which is a sun trap, overlooking the river.Visited this establishment for a family lunch, upon entry ignored for about 10 mins, I approached a member of staff for menus.Dated, tired and dirty old decor - water and food on floor.We ordered steak (good) and frites (awful), salmon (average), fish and chips (good).I had to search for someone to complain about the cold and rubbery frites and limp dry rocket garnish. A portion of thick cut chips and fresh rocket came fairly quickly, both of which were very good.No further communications received from anyone, service abysmal.If you want to top up your suntan, sit on the terrace with a drink - if you want good service, food, ambience etc. - go elsewhere!

Four friend had an evening meal, the meals were ok but not as posh as the menu suggested, the chicken said it had dauphinioe potatoes but came with very dry rosti type potato so without any sauce made a very dry meal (I used some of my hubby's gravy on the potato and brocolli)

Nice staff, shame about the manager. Two tasty meals the third however was overcooked so was sent back and after 10 minutes of waiting we went to the bar to ask about it and the manager told us he thought we were giving them feedback and would not refund us and that half the meal had been eaten when it clearly was not and when we complained we were told not to be aggressive and accused of being drunk. Very poor customer service
