The Boars Head Hotel in East Staffordshire

Overnight stay after all day trip to Alton towers. Very easy to find via directions , everyone very polite and welcoming. Food lovely along with generous offering for breakfast. Room was great also no negatives at all would happily return again .

Fabulous choice of food, good value, great service - friendly and attentive, lovely venue, lots of character, a real favourite.

Cosy pub with great food and nice rooms. Loved the bathtub. Room was nice and quiet. Breakfast was well cooked with good choices.

We were part of an Association which block booked rooms. The dinners and breakfasts were both excellent. Service was friendly and efficient. Room was fine. No problems at all.

I was here for an overnight stay prior to an event at The National Memorial Arboretum. It’s a cosy, friendly and welcoming place. I enjoyed the evening food as well as the breakfast. The staff were helpful and polite, and the room was comfortable. A little highlight - the ice cubes in the G&T - a real work of art!

Our favourite go to dog friendly hotel. Good size bedrooms with really comfy beds. Plenty of dining, lounging areas. Meals are extremely good value. Roast dinner on the extensive menu every day. Staff are very accommodating and friendly. The hotel is situated just outside peak district and most main attractions and towns are within 1 or 2 hours. At time of review, am planning 5th visit . Regarding dogs, all dog friendly rooms are ground floor where there is a night exit. Plenty of grass for pre breakfast/ dinner walkies. Inside dogs can be taken to all areas except main restaurant.

Took an overnight pitstop here between Cardiff and York. Really loved the place. Staff lovely. Dinner, b&b excellent.

4 Nights Bed and Breakfast. Colleagues pleasant, cheerful and courteous .Breakfast was served at individual table no plastic eggs .Had Family Dinner for 6 excellent service and generous portions.

Thought we would give this place a try as we hadn't been since 2019. The food was average. Thin slices of meat and no difference from the standard plate to large plate apart from 1 extra roast potato which was undercooked. Veg was to my liking but undercooked for the hubby. Gravy....well....no depth to it at all.....meat was flavourless as was the cheese sauce for the cauliflower. Perhaps put meat juices and gravy granules/ oxo into the gravy and don't put it on the plate, put it in a jug so the customer can help themselves. Proper hearty gravy is what's needed. Individual veg dishes ....nah....put it all in one dish and add more to it. The Swan down the road has got it bang on. Average ...perhaps it's our taste buds but we won't be going back in a hurry. Staff excellent however being asked 5 times if our meal was ok was a bit overboard.

As always, a fantastic visit to the Boars Head. Great food, great staff, great place. Always a pleasure to visit. I'd like to extend my thanks to all the staff that always make my stay so enjoyable 😉

Wow went for afternoon tea with my mum to celebrate her birthday quietly she didn’t want a fuss!!! Got shown to our table by a lovely girl quickly served with large pot of tea and shortly after she came in with out afternoon tea… delicious and so much on the tiered plates… lovely selection of sandwiches and delicious selection of cakes bought scones jam and cream gorgeous and felt so full when we left, absolutely fantastic value for money never felt pressured for in how long we stayed. Service was lovely from the staff and will deffo return. Thanks Gabby and team 😋😋

Stayed at the Boar's Head for 3 nights, including breakfast. Very comfortable, spotlessly clean, staff are friendly and ready to help. Breakfast was lovely, good selection from menu and served to table. We also had an evening meal which was delicious. Have had Sunday lunch here before with family which was also lovely. We have had two fabulous meals on separate occasions- both have been stunning in both taste and presentation. Given restrictions at the moment, the Boars Head team have really made a superb effort in creating outside surroundings where you can enjoy a little bit of normal life.The outdoor heaters provide enough heat to take an edge off and the lighting at dusk does the rest.Our meals were fabulous-the attention to plating detail very much appreciated and enjoyed.So lucky to have this on our doorstep.

Had an absolutely fabulous meal. Lamb was exquisitely cooked and the Stilton & steak pie was beautiful. Really great service. Ordered what we thought was a small pudding. Wow what a show stopper! Yakitori

Went to the Boars Head last Saturday for lunch with my husband and cousin. What a great choice for the first time out. I have been in the shielding category so was a little apprehensive. They are adhering to all COVID requirements . Tables well space etc.Food as good as ever. Cant fault you! Well done. We will be back.

We had a small family gettogether last week and chose to lunch at The Boars Head. An excellent choice with a well sheltered dining area and properly spaced tables. The menu is wide and varied with plenty of choice including the All Day Breakfast for those who missed it at home. Food was very good with a number of clean plates and service could not be faulted.

Went for friends birthday friday night,food excellent as always,service good and added bonus as it was friday night we had pink gin offer and 25 percent off all our food.All covid measures in place and strictly adhered to that is why it is only place we go out to eat at the moment as feel perfectly safe there.

The food was delicious and perfect temperature. Could have done with a little bit more gravy with each meal and more veg. The meat was tender and cooked perfectly. The outdoor area was lovely in the sun where we enjoyed our delicious desserts.The staff were all really pleasant and social distancing was practiced with no issues!

Our group of eight friends have just returned from staying at the Boars Head Hotel for three nights. We can thoroughly recommend it. The rooms were large and quiet and very clean. The staff were all very welcoming, polite, charming, friendly and very helpful in every aspect. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them no matter what we asked them. The restaurant was very nicely designed and the tables were well spaced out according to the current covid regulations. The food in the restaurant was of a very high standard, with plenty of choice on the menu, and every dish was beautifully presented. Good value for money too. Nice lounge to sit in as a group after our meal.

Went with a friend for afternoon tea today 2pm.Quite busy but still placed at a safe distance from others.Tea was excellent lovely sandwiches,good choice and tasty.The two scones and cream were lovely and the selection of other cakes was superb.Alrhough my friend and I like our food we couldn't manage all the cakes but were given takeaway container to take some home.We both had coffee which was lovely and a top up upon request.All in all a really nice afternoon highly recommended,staff as ever friendly and efficient.

We've just spent 3 nights at the Boars Head Hotel. The care and level of cleanliness taken throughout our stay was superb. After staying for dinner the first night we knew we wouldn't be looking for anywhere else to have our evening meals for the rest of the stay. The food was reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. The specials changed daily and everything was fresh and original. Breakfast was of the same quality, with all tastes catered for. This was a motorcycling short break and we felt the car park was secure for the bikes.

As a family of four, myself, husband and 20yo twin daughters we normally stay in chain hotels when travelling. However this time we were unable to book a room and so a google search came up with this hotel and what a find it was. This was our first post-lockdown trip and we were somewhat apprehensive as to what it would be like, we needn't have worried. The staff were all extremely friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Yes, there were social distancing measures in place and the staff wore visors but other than that everything felt very normal. The rooms were of a generous size with very comfortable beds and plenty of drawers and wardrobe space (though a few more coathangers would have been welcome) The in-room refreshments were good with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and nice, upmarket biscuits rather than the custard creams one so often gets. Because of Covid 19 we were told no-one would enter our room during our stay but we were given a slip to hand in at reception to request anything from further towels to more tea and coffee and this was promptly delivered. The bathroom was a little tired with a strangely angled shower and poor lighting over the sink for putting on make up but it was very clean. Where the hotel really excelled was in the restaurant. Again, because of Covid 19, there was not the usual breakfast buffet but the lovely waitress made sure we had enough of whatever we wanted off the menu and from my husband's full English to my granola pot and fresh fruit platter it was well cooked and beautifully presented. We ate one evening meal in the hotel which was superb and excellent value for money. All this and at a lower price than we have often paid for an impersonal chain hotel. We are converts and will hopefully be visiting again soon.

My wife and I had a meal here today, and we were very impressed!We were regulars anyway prior to lockdown, and already loved the place. Everything was really well organised and the staff excellent, as usual. The food was great and although distancing was employed there is still a great atmosphere. I can't say enough about how good the Boar's Head is!!

The Boars Head is a beautiful place for gatherings of all types, I’ve had birthday parties, valentines meals and Christmas parties here and all of them were made special in their own way. I even used to waitress here! The crooks’ are doing a fantastic job of running this place, can’t wait to visit again.

Our second visit to this hotel and once again we were not disappointed, our room was on the ground floor spacious and spotless clean. I was pleased with the little things plenty of hangers well stocked tea and coffee including complimentary biscuits . We dined in the al a carte restaurant but they also have a carvery restaurant with an addition of a specials board. On both evenings our meals were amazing and excellent value for money. We were on the two night deal with includes breakfast and three course meal each evening from the set menu or you could pay a small additional charge for other items on the menu. All this for £220 (per couple not including additional supplements when choosing other items from the menu) But what really makes this hotel so outstanding is the staff, exceptional service from everyone we met and all so pleasant. I have recently stayed in a Hilton hotel but the board head by far exceeds the Hilton in every aspect.The only slight negative internet service in the room poor but worked ok in the rest of the hotel, and the bathroom was a little tired but both these so minor compared with everything else this hotel has to offer. Thank you all for a lovely time and hope to join you at Christmas.

Our first time at The Boars Head Hotel And what a lovely evening it was for valentines with the special menu. Also it was a great surprise to have a very talented pianist playing through out the evening. As for the meal. Word can’t describe as it was all cooked to perfection as-well as the presentation Me and my wife would like to say a big Thankyou to all the staff for making us very welcome and a nice touch that the owner made sure that everything was perfect with ourselves and other customersSee you in the very near future

2nd visit in 2 months, the carver did not let us down, good quality fare, plenty of veg, Usually 3 meats to choose from, Pleasant staff, smiling and very helpful, The dining area is pleasant and comfortable. A spot to re-visit

Stayed for the Christmas break & was overwhelmed by everything, the staff couldn’t do enough for us, the food was amazing & the family that own the business made us feel very welcome & part of their family. We have stayed at the hotel a few times but this was our first Christmas there & will definitely be going back.

Booked for 11 adults 4 children, Friday 27th December in main restaurant. Table beautifully presented, enjoyed drinks in the spacious dedicated welcome area before enjoying great meal. Choice of daily menu or a la carte - enjoyed by all.Definitely recommend.As an aside there is also a carvery / bar menu again daily changes which is also excellent.

We recently enjoyed a night out at The Boars Head. The starters of Haddock Fishcake and desserts of Homemade Cheesecake were excellent. Our mains of Seabream and Beef Brisket are also to be highly recommended. The food was beautifully cooked and well presented, and the plates were hot!We received excellent service from a friendly, efficient and attentive team - Gabrielle, Abi, Joe, Josh, Billie and Lily. The restaurant was full and they did an amazing job keeping everything running smoothly. Thank you to all at The Boars Head, we had a great time!

Visited The Boar’s head 3 or 4 times now. Cavery has always been nice with a good choice of potatoes and vegetables. 3 choices of meat but often only red. Would be nice to have the choice of 2 red and one white. But overall would recommend.

Several times me and my girlfriend have been here for food and we are always never left disappointed. From service to food everything is excellent. I will be recommending you to our friends, and we will be back again very soon.

Staying at the hotel, I thought it would be good to try the restaurant, as it had very good reviews. Pleased to say, it was a good decision! There is a large choice to be had, from A la Carte to bar menu, carvery and a mid range selection. I opted for one of the specials that was on the daily board - slow cooked pork, which was superbly cooked and very tasty. The waiting staff were very friendly and helpful, and although all the dining areas were busy, they still managed to keep on top of things and make sure everyone was catered for, still with smiles on their faces - very impressive! I would say it is not a cheap place to eat, but well worth the money for a superb standard of cuisine and staff, as well as the atmosphere - buzzing and vibrant. Would I eat there again? - Most certainly!

We had a 2 day break at the Boars Head, it was first class & Ruby the Staffie was made most welcome. We had a comfortable room on the ground floor with easy access to the car park & nearby grassed area. The staff here are really efficient & friendly. We ate in the bar on the first night which has a very popular carvery but also a very varied & good menu. We were not aware until we got back the second day that the whole of the bar & half of the restaurant was reserved for several functions including a golden wedding anniversary & thought that we might have trouble getting a table. No problem though & another good meal in the restaurant & the staff did really well with the numbers involved. Well done Boars Head.

Really nice and pleasant visit as always. was very pleased to see a wide variety of vegetables in the vegetarian sizzle dish and not just a half bothered usual carrots, peas etc. Would definitely recommend and have heard some good comments about the carvery.

The Boar’s Head is like the Classic Red RollsRoyce parked in it’s car park…elegant, quietly capable and fabulous.

We called in and had not booked. We was served quickly and ordered the carvery. The meat and Yorkshire puddings are put on the plate for you but you can help yourself to everything else. Good price.

A spur of the moment decision to visit for lunch as we were driving past. It is a few years since we visited and in those days the meals were very tasty with an excellent carvery. We were delighted to find that today the meals were excellent and the carvery second to none. The quality of the meat was excellent and they were all cooked to perfection. I chose the beef lasagne from the main menu which was very tasty and good value. We will thoroughly recommend this restaurant to our friends and will visit again soon. The staff were very friendly and helpful and very cheerful which was a bonus on a day when the hot weather broke to a downpour.

Been here a couple of times now. We have tried the Carvery and the Bar menu. The staff are great and the food is wonderful. The specials board is extensive and your overwhelmed the choice. All fresh and home cooked.

Around a mile south of the A50 on the A515 with plenty of car parking. A pleasant, comfortable and stylish restaurant with an adjacent lounge, giving a relaxing experience.

After a flight at Tatenhill we needed a good lunch and popped into the Boars Head. The has been a change of menu since I last looked and I tried a new dish, Pork Snitzle, excellent, came with sauté potato's and greens plus a source. Best main course I've had for some time. My guests also cleaned plate and my vegie guest was happy with the menu and said the Vegie Lasagne was very good. Staff as ever friendly and efficient.

I had booked the restaurant for 19 of us. The food was excellent and a good selection avaiable, staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful and each course was served promptly. I would not hesitate,to receommend thie Boars Head and special thanks to Gabrielle for her help and advice. My family and friends were very impressed with the way things had been conducted and we had a very pleasant afternoon.

Have visited and enjoyed the carvery so many times. Was disappointed today that the turkey and beef were rolls. Last visits the turkey was carved from a half breast and the beef was a joint. Vegetables, apart from the potatoes, were hard, cauliflower was sitting in something watery when it used to be in a lovely thick cheese sauce. Pudding was delicious, staff lovely and friendly and very helpful. I would rather pay a bit more and go back to the previous quality of food though.

I had 20 minutes to get lunch as I drove into this lovely village for a meeting, staff member was awesome, served me immediately from the carvery which was lovely and an unexpected suprise.. beautiful crackling, loved it. and all for 6 pound fifty, perfect

Went for mothers day and we had the Carvery which was excellent. There was four meats to choose from and a good choice of vegetables. The sweets were good as well. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would certainly go back again.

Called in for lunch. Lovely Carvery for my two friends and I had the Fish Goujons - Very Disappointed that this was served on a wooden board, EHO now recommend that wood is not used as has been proven to be unhygienic, and I must say this board did NOT look like it had been through the dishwasher, hence only 3 stars I will ask to be served on a plate in future. However, I must add the food was of lovely quality and very tasty therefore I will go again. Please management DUMP the WOOD or chop it up for the fire.

We visited the Boars Head Hotel restaurant with friends after a day visiting Sudbury Hall, a National Trust property just down the road. When we arrived the staff behind the bar were very friendly and helpful, the carvery was excellent, and great value for the money. The restaurant itself was full, (booking advisable for the restaurant) so we grabbed a table in the upper bar area, which was fine. We stayed for about 3 hours and had a lovely evening before heading off for the 2 hour drive home.

Yet again another great stay fantastic food/service/comfort Love the boars head would highly recommend stayed there 4 times now it gets better every time !

We stayed here to go to a party nearby and it was fine. It’s a good three star hotel. The best bit is the great brekkie - we ordered bacon sandwiches and they were absolutely delicious. Decor is very 80’s but it’s really good value and we would definitely recommend.

Popped in for food. The weekday carvery was good value and nice fresh vegetables.

Sorry. I spoke to the staff at the time, they were polite but not bothered, just another sucker prepared to pay good money for a horrible meal. We had the set menu in the restaurant, I chose roast beef, I've actually had this on a Sunday and it was lovely, what I didn't understand is why I got two thin slices of the sort of stuff you might put on a sandwich, when in the other dining room there was a perfectly good carvery with a proper joint, no explanation was forthcoming. Just the wrong choice, The wrong place on the wrong day I guess, my OH had the pheasant which I have to say in all fairness he really enjoyed.

My wife and I are regular visitors here, whether for drinks or a meal.

Staff were friendly and efficient. The carvery is very reasonably priced - nice but not exceptional, nice if you don't fancy cooking a roast yourself.

Stopped for a light lunch on route to our stay at hoar cross hall, Sunday carvery looks fab although we had light option. Hollumi burger and cod burger, was delicious and just enough. Nice place and friendly staff.

Had my 40th birthday meal with family for 15 here and it was excellent. Superb food, lovely seating- we had what felt like our own area although we were in the main restaurant and even some of the add ins and take offs the younger members asked for wasn’t any trouble at all. Friendly and professional.

The meal here was edible, but quite uninspiring. We took the vegetable fajita and the fish and chips. Both were edible, but quite average. The fajita was under-flavoured, with not enough guacamole, cheese and salsa. Also the knives we were offered were so blunt as to make cutting the fajita a real effort. The three times cooked chips on the fish and chips were not so crispy, and were quite bland.

A really really good carvery. The pork & Yorkshire puddings were super. Reasonable price, great service. How it should be done. Will certainly return.

Great food and lovely staff - always welcoming especially as we go there ALOT! And being in the countryside it is great to have a place that is generally open throughout the day.

Great value and very tasty carvery. The presence of a few retired folk clearly confirms my opening statement. Very conveniently located a minute or two off the A50 of you're looking for a easy lunch stop. The atmosphere is very welcoming and friendly. The busy road adjacent to the beer garden seating area prevented us from eating outside. 4.5 stars none the less from us.

I’ve visited the place on a numerous of times and all have been very good. Last year my work colleagues had our Xmas do here and that was fantastic. The food was great.

Been here several times for lunch and once for evening set menu. With another couple this time went for the quite extensive al last carte menu. None of us were disappointed. Beautifully cooked and presented from the starters to the puddings/sweets. Excellent service from all members of staff. Could not fault anything

Stayed here together with my parents for two nights in preparation for a local family wedding. Staff were welcoming and friendly throughout and were happy to help wherever they could. Rooms were comfortable and very spacious and the cooked breakfast each morning very tasty. A family member who had arrived in time for the evening carvery said there was a good choice available and it was very reasonably priced. All in all accessible, affordable, approachable!

Recently had a good meal made more pleasant by great service. Always a friendly atmosphere and nothing too much trouble for the young waitress serving us. We will return

We stayed as a group of nine for a birthday weekend. Everything was perfect. The food, the rooms, the drinks, the staff, especially the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. They even reserved us the lounge for birthday cake and coffee.

We visited the boars head at draycott for a birthday meal last weekend.we were very disappointed in the portions of meat that were served you are allowed 3 pieces of meat each and every one it cut micro thin all 12 of us who visited were very unimpressed.when we asked if this was normal we were told if the meat was cut any thicker they would have to put the price up!avoid!

Lovely friendly busy local hotel with an excellent value carvery one of the best in Derbyshire been on the border of the Peak District well worth a visit by tourists who will not be dissappointed by the prices

Visited The Boars Head at 1:30 Sunday 6th May. The Hotel restaurant was very busy as usual but this never seems to phase the staff, they are always very cheerful and helpful. We opted for the carvery and as usual it was very well cooked. We will be back again.

Family Carvery for 26 on wife’s 65 birthday. Good meal, well looked after, great atmosphere. Been before, will go again.

We used to come to the boars head very often, but moved away due to work. Thankfully we moved back to the West Midlands and first port of call was yourselves. Superb quality and service. Have already recommended you to friends and relatives. Although we live a fair few miles away we will definitely be back at least once every two weeksweeks. Thank you x.

Sunday 15th April 18, we drove to the village of Sudbury, where we went to celebrate our friend Susan’s Birthday at the ‘The Boars Head’ Hotel.

About 24 of us visited for carvery. We arrived about 11.55 and had short wait of about 15 minutes before carvery was ready. Good choice of piping hot fresh vegetables and 4 meats to choice from. Staff all pleasant and helpful. If I had one minor complaint would be amount of meat was on small side compared to similar restaurant we use. Will probably visit with family in near future.

Called in with a friend who has used the Boars Head for years. I was very much impressed by the interior, warm and cosy feel to it. (Ample parking I also found). We had the carvery and this was of ample selections, they plated the meat, roast and Yorkshire, You then helped yourself to whatever other items you wished. A point to note, don't pick up the plates with bare fingers as the plates have also been heated. Check the web page for times as we had ours at 6pm, the starting time for evening and they do lunch as well. Prices start from £6.50 and £6.75 depending on time. Tables can be booked in advance if you wish. This is a place I would and will go back to over the coming months.
