Stopped here without booking. It turned out to be the best Sunday lunch I can recall having for a long time. Vegetables appeared all freshly prepared and cooked. Every mouthful was full of flavour. The jus with the Yorkshire pudding was amazing. My wife really enjoyed the pork loin and the Butternut wellington I had was really tasty. It was worthy of the £19.50 price. Good service also.

Lovely setting, and we are regular visitors to Southwold and the pier. The staff at The Boardwalk were pleasant and welcoming and looked after us well. There were lots of lovely choices on the menu. We had plaice and chips and sea bass... both very tasty and filling. We sonehow found room for desserts..the sticky toffee pudding and date and orange bread and butter pudding were pretty special. Thanks for a lovely meal, and we will happily return!

I have visited this resturant before but I was delighted with this visit and the speed at which I was seated at a table for two people. Being a solo traveller I prefer small tables and this was Ideal. On reading through the menu after ordering my Adnams Broadside beer, I was stunned by the quality of food on offer. Despite being a "senior Citizen" and not being able to eat as much as I used to be able to eat, I decided to go for a starter and main course. The starter I chose was Sheell on prawns with granary bread and butter, small side salad and Marie Rose sauce. My choice of main course was Pan fried sea bass, with crushed potates and seasonal vegetables in a roasted red pepper puree. The waitress asked me if i would like the two choices together or seperately. I chose to have the starter first and the main course after a suitable "Digestive break". It was just as well i did! Both courses were filling and very enjoyable. I was given plenty of time to enjoy this substantial lunch with all staff giving me a glance to check on my progress. The restaurant was almost full inddors and there customers on the outdoor tables as well. I was not rushed to pay but staff waited until I asked to pay. Payment was quick, easy and polite. All food was correct temperature and texture, tasty and well presented.

I requested the half lobster only ever having eaten lobster once before and loved it. What a disappointment- there could have been no more than a flat tablespoon of lobster 'meat' to eat and bore no comparison to the other images people have posted. I can only presume that the other half of lobster remaining in the kitchen must have had the main share of the 'meat'. Shame did not request the whole lobster which may have prevented this disappointment as it appears that the chef is not able to ensure each half has adequate contents. Mentioned to the waitress at the time but she was unable to offer any help or rectify. The salad it came with was nicely dressed and tasty. Thankfully the meal came with chips otherwise there would really have been nothing to eat (for £25). Will not be returning - feel ripped off!

Me and my wife love coming here, always later than lunch to avoid the rush, and the food is wonderful. The staff are super friendly and enthusiastic. The Restaurant seems to attract nice people as well, happy families, couples, and children. Sometimes we are well over 12 in number and there has never been a problem, even if we havent booked. We will be coming here till the end of our days.

Walked in on Friday 16 August without a booking. Shown to a table and given menus and offered drinks. We then selected our meals which arrived quite quickly, fish and chips 3 times and a crab salad. The fish were large cod not available only haddock and plaice on the menu, and well cooked in a crispy batter. The chips were good and the crab salad was well enjoyed. Why then only 3 stars? Very simple! Menu said fish chips and MUSHY PEAS. What was served was not a dish of mushy peas instead it was a pretty awful dish of nearly cold mashed garden peas. As anyone from Yorkshire will tell you crushed garden peas are NOT mushy peas. 3 dishes of them uneaten. Disappointed.

Disappointing this time. Waitress was disinterested. table was sticky and not wiped, she took order, and we waited and waited - 25 minutes passed without even receiving our drinks order. Saw what looked like our order and she has it marked for table 30 not 40 - it turned out our drinks went there too. She wasn't even apologetic when she came for payment . Not sure if it was poor training , or she was more interested in her new nails and eyelashes. Come on guys, you can do better than this

We visited the boardwalk restaurant like we have many times when we come to Southwold. however we have notice the few times we have been on how poor the service and the quality of food is now. We was seated at our table by a young girl without menus which we had to ask for! We waited ages for our waitress to come over to take our order. The food arrived in different times which was 10-15 minutes apart plus the food arrived before our drinks we also received the wrong food. We also notice that other tables was unhappy with the quality of food and the service. It was like we was in faulty towers. It has never been a cheap place to eat but the prices are ridiculous now . One of our party are gluten free she usually has gluten free fish and chips but the restaurant don’t offer this now unless you have it pan fried and the other gluten free options are disappointing so if you have a gluten allergy don’t come here. We did complain about the quality of food and the food arriving at different times we did receive a discount on the bill but the manager seemed like she didn’t care. Unfortunately with our recently experience we won’t return.

We love Southwold and go there at least 3 times every summer. The boardwalk was always our go to restaurant as my wife has coeliac disease and they always catered for those who need gluten free, at least they used to. This was our first visit to Southwold this summer and we’re looking forward to enjoying fish and chips on the pier. However when sitting down in the restaurant and perusing the menu, we found the menu had been completely changed since last summer and almost all gluten free options had been removed, despite it clearly stating on the door as you went in that gluten free options were available. Literally the only item on the menu my wife could have was the dressed crab. After expressing our disappointment to the waiting staff, we went ahead and ordered, making it clear that my wife has coeliac disease and can’t have any gluten. When the food arrived and I saw the buttered bread on the plate, I immediately stopped my wife from tucking in, and checked if the bread was gluten free. It was not. I don’t know where to begin to explain just how shoddy and poor the service was here. It was bad enough that somebody in authority thought it was a good idea to remove almost all the gluten free options from the menu, the poor excuses the staff gave just made the situation worse. But then to have the only dish on the menu that was stated as being gluten free arrive with standard bread on it, which very much contained gluten was quite frankly unforgivable. Do your staff have idea of what could have happened to my wife if I had not stopped her from eating it? You had a very clear duty of care and you clearly failed. Please everyone, if you suffer from allergies or have coeliac disease, I urge you NOT to go to this restaurant. The staff are clearly untrained, have no idea of the duty of care the restaurant holds and you will leave disappointed and hungry. This is such a shame because it was once a very good restaurant.

Went with granddaughter today and had a meal in The Boardwalk. We have eaten here several times before when it has been excellent. Today however it was nowhere near the same quality. My granddaughter ordered chicken nuggets advertised with skinny fries but what came were normal chips, nothing skinny about them. My wife and myself ordered haddock that was quite nice but a little greasy. They came with mushy peas that were cold on arrival and by the time replacements had arrived the rest of the meal was almost gone. Whilst this meal was ok, it was certainly not as good as the many other times we have eaten here and what before was good value for a quality meal became an expensive average meal. The only positive was the staff who were lovely.

In Southwold during the week first visit here and after walking along the front got to the pier around mid day, clouds looked a little ominous so we thought fish and chips inside so the Boardwalk fitted the bill. We were seated promptly at a table for two in the corner which was good as we had our dog with us. Orders were taken in good time, drinks arrived first followed by cod and chips with mushy peas. Mushy peas were ok just served in a small pot probably as much tartare sauce as peas, chips were ok, the cod it just didn’t flake like it should have and both portions were like scrag ends. It was all edible I think for the price it could have been much better. The site and staff couldn’t fault and I presume what was haddock going out looked good, we just chose the wrong fish.

Wouldn’t rush back to eat here. It wasn’t particularly busy. Our food and drink order was taken. After 20 minutes we asked where our drinks were, to be told there was an issue with the till, what this had to do with the till I have no idea ! and then the order was taken again. We then had to ask for our drinks whilst we waited for the food. When the food eventually arrived the chips looked like left overs from yesterday’s chip shop which had been left under a heat lamp. I feel they heat the plates up to warm the food up.

This restaurant is in a lovely spot on the pier overlooking the sea. We were a table of 10 with a pre booked table with pre ordered food. Arrived and were seated quickly and given menus. A table of 8 and 4 followed us in after. We then sat there for 20 minutes with nobody coming to take our drinks order until we asked one of the many waitresses standing around. Food took around another 45 minutes and the 2 tables that came in after were both served before us. The restaurant was not particularly busy, so god knows what the service is like when it is. When the food turned up, the chips were like cardboard and gammon charred. For the price point of this restaurant, I would have expected better.

Both of us were very surprised at the changes.not impressed with my burger in a bun the chilli sauce overpowered the burger, cheese non existant, burger little taste and 10mm thick, 1 lettuce leaf yes lots of skinny chips £17 very overpriced. My wife asked for a child's portion of chicken nuggets and chips as no sausages available and the waitress asked did she want a adult sized portion which was not on the adult menu. I would of rather had the chicken balls. Service good just a disappointing meal, sorry we won't be back as so little choice.

My wife and I have used this restaurant on several occasions. Our last visit was pretty poor. The fries that came with the sandwiches were lukewarm, as was the lager. The coffee didn't fair much better. It tasted like the dregs from the day before. Apparently, there are new owners. Let's hope they improve the standard of the overpriced basic food. I appreciate that we will be paying more for the view from the pier etc but it can't be that hard to get the basics right can it??

Don’t usually leave reviews but this was a much enjoyed experience. Me and my friends came in for a light lunch at the boardwalk Mercia marina and was greeted by three lovely bar staff who were very attentive, when we asked what they would recommend they suggested the don buri rice bowls which to my surprise was an amazing addition to the menu, through out our visit we experienced great service and amazing food! All the staff had smiles on their faces which definitely made the experience a delightful one and would 100% come back and recommend to others. We also noticed dotted around the bar that they have a lot of events on that cater for everyone. Overall a very happy experience and will definitely make a return!

A married couple on a flying visit to Southwold, we parked near the Pier (this was Winter by the way) and headed straight to The Boardwalk Restaurant for refreshments. We were immediately seated, and our order for hot chocolates arrived in good time. Accompanied by a slice of 'cake-of-the -day' (lemon drizzle) it made for a quite pleasant few minutes while we watched a fisherman on the rocks/beach nearby. Your reviewers wife also went for soup and bread, and this appeared to be quite tasty as well. Go here for prompt service and cracking hot chocolate.

I don’t know if it’s because this cafe / restaurant is situated on the pier, which leads me to think that it’s a low quality touristy place, but I keep being surprised by the quality of the food. I’ve now been here a few times in the last three or four years, always with family, and never been disappointed. On this occasion, we were a group of three adults and two children and, again, we all had an excellent meal. I had chicken caesar salad which was very tasty. The portion size was large with a very generous serving of warm chicken breast. The other two adults had homemade tomato soup with some fresh granary bread which, they said, was delicious. The children’s meals were a pasta dish that was enormous, and defeated my ten year old grandson, and a small fish and chips that my eight year old granddaughter enjoyed but couldn’t finish either! Food and service were spot on and there’s clean loos too! Overall, great value for money. No doubt we’ll return in another year when I’ll again be saying how surprised I am by the quality of the food!

We chose this restaurant ( Sat 21st) as it offered Gluten Free fish n chips. From the moment we walked in the staff were very attentive and helpful. When I mentioned being GF they couldn’t do enough for me. I was even offered GF vinegar ( I’ve never been offered this anywhere else). It was quiet (5pm and the end of storm Babet) so we had a choice of where to sit. It was lovely to have GF food overlooking the sea. Both mine and my husbands ( not GF) fish and chips were amazing and the crushed peas were lovely. I’ve only ever been offered normal or mushy peas elsewhere. The presentation was good too. I was surprised to see a couple of poor reviews as we couldn’t fault our food or experience. The restaurant could do with a lick of paint/ re-decorate but I’m sure this is a winter job they would do after a busy summer and heavy footfall. Overall I was very happy. Thanks guys ( can’t remember individual names ) and keep up the good work.

The restaurant was very busy as it was half term so it took a while for our order to arrive, my young son was getting fed up. One dish was slightly incorrect but was immediately corrected. The restaurant staff were very polite and helpful. However, the Fish Finger Sandwich was disappointing. Two very tiny pieces of fish cooked in batter that was hard and oily, difficult the eat. This is not a review I ever wanted to write, as we have been regular customers at the Boardwalk for many years, but today was a total disaster. It took 50 minutes to prepare 2 chicken ceasar salads (1 gluten free) when the food finally arrived, the chicken was very dry, almost powdery, and the salad had so little dressing, that too was dry. We couldn't finish the meals, they were so bad, we complained and to the credit of the front-of-house manager, we didn't pay for the meals. But the chef must have hated salads, because what was delivered was a culinary crime. All the other diners seem to have got their food in good time and to a reasonable standard. The Boardwalk isn't a fancy restaurant, but we have always had good honest food from there in the past. I hope today was just a glitch with the kitchen staff, but I'm loathe to go back until I've sent someone else to try them out first It takes a long time to get a regular customer and only one bad meal to lose them.......

Visited with friends on a Sunday lunch time. We all chose specials from the Specials board. Unfortunately when the Crab sandwiches arrived (Chosen by three) the bread was stale. The meals were changed and were much better on return with fresh bread but not a lot of filling. Two of us had roast pork but we were disapointed with the size of portion. No crackling or apple sauce. Overall we felt the meals were overpriced and the standard below what I would have expected for the price.

I visited with my Mum and young daughter which I had pre-booked in advance. We arrived at 6pm for dinner and our order, of a starter and a main, was taken quickly after we arrived. Our drinks came quickly and then unfortunately it all went wrong. We had to wait until 7.10pm for our starters (pate and bread selection) to arrive. People who came into the restaurant after us, received their main courses before we even got our starters! No one explained to us why the food took so long to come, no one checked if we wanted more drinks while we were waiting; we were just left to sit snd wait for an hour and 10 minutes. This is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for a starter, especially when you have a young child as part of your group. When the food eventually arrived, it was lovely but the wait time was unacceptable. The waiter seemed to realise we were unhappy as there was no gap between the starter and the main, our main course being brought as my daughter was taking her last bite of the starter. Food excellent, service questionable, wait time unacceptable. We will not be returning.

I cannot rate this place highly enough. Party of 8 including a 7 year old and a toddler. The food - delicious, sublime, perfect! Pork belly for me with a cider sauce that I didn’t think I’d like, so asked for it on the side. Well I drowned the pork with it within a second of trying it. Best sauce I’ve had possibly ever. All other members of our group enjoyed their meals too. The menu has something for everyone. And don’t be silly and split the brownie, it’s light enough to enjoy all on your own!The service - this team are not what you would expect to see outside of a top class place in a big town. Forethought to ask if we wanted kids meals with starters, and to ask the table if my meal could be kept warm under the hot plate whilst I was outside with my stropping toddler. Just couldn’t ask for more. In summary - absolutely shocking that there weren’t more tables full when we were here. Beautiful setting. Leek and Potato soup was spot on. The fish and chips (£13.95) would have been expensive at a fiver. Fish was tasteless like a frozen effort as were the rubbery frozen chips. Usually at the Seaside fish and chips are up a notch from the norm.

Travelling from the north east of England and thought with this being a seaside town that the fish and chips would be lovely, unfortunately they were not! At £13.95 they were very sub standard. Frozen chips with sloppy tasteless peas and fish that tasted as if the cooking oil needed to be changed. Lovely friendly staff and a picturesque view... shame about the food

We have been coming to this eatery for years. On our recent visits, we have been disappointed by the menu. In particular the lack of the sea food platter. On the last 2 occasions, both times I ordered Sea Bass, and was very dissatisfied by the portion size of fish. 1 tiny fillet.Hope to see an improvement, next time

Evening meal with a large group. We had a meal with 9 people 3 children and 6 adults. The food here is really nice and you have the benefit of the views over the town. We had a selection of fish and chips, fish pie, muscles, risotto and children’s meals. There was no complaints and service was quick.

A busy day in Southwold but we soon got a window seat. We both chose the Carrot and Coriander Soup which was served with some really nice fresh bread. She had a small ghost ship and I an Americano .The service was fast and the food very good. Would recommend for a light lunch and snack.

We popped in here once we realised that it was open. We had just had a disappointing meal at The Sole bay Inn so came in here for coffee and cake. Lovely Mocha and Americano and nice cake. Being January there were only a few people in there and I know it is very popular in the summer but it was nice to sit in there and watch the waves .Will definitely go back for a decent lunch.

I think this may be my second review of this restaurant. We went for lunch on a crisp winter weekday, the retaurant was still busy though which says a lot about its reputation.Fish and chips! So fresh the fish could have been caught this morning off the end of the pier.Gluten free batter for my wife's lunch too, which is even better.Slight moan - very little in the way of specials on offer but it is midweek out of season so maybe I am expecting too much.

This would be a 4 star review as food and service excellent however the experience was made significantly less enjoyable due to dogs being allowed in the restaurant. It felt like we were in a kennels cafe with dogs barking , jumping up on owners laps and slobbering/ shaking fur all over the tables ( not very hygienic)

Dropped into Southwold for NYE walk with my dogs, the whole town was absolutely rammed, thought we wouldnt find anywhere to eat. However the Boardwalk had a table for two, and allowed my husband and I to take our dogs in too! Service was extremely efficient, food was good, but we were a bit hemmed at our table due to a large christmas tree immediately behind us!

Made the trip to Southwold from Ipswich for Afternoon Tea and boy was it worth the trip! We were served savoury food first - great selection of open and closed sandwiches, Sausage Rolls & Cheese Scones. Then came the sweet treats - more fruit scones with cream & jam, Brownies, Bakewell Sponge, Iced Sponge cake and more.

Lovely cosy feeling in the boardwalk restaurant when we came for a late lunch on a windy rainy day. We found the staff to be pleasant and friendly and the food was excellent throughout.

I have always loved this restaurant but sadly visited this weekend for the first time in about a year and was so disappointed - not with the food, which was fine (not as special as it used to be) but with some (not all) of the staff. We witnessed a couple of customers being treated in a terribly condescending and patronising way - i was shocked and felt terrible for them - they left without ordering. I am not sure i want to return in case I too am spoken too in that way.

We went here for the fish and chips on a stormy September Friday night in September. We were the first ones in but still treated well, decent glasses of wine and very good fish and chips, well presented. Superb views of the sea, and as the place filled up they continued to cope admirably. Our favourite fish and chips in East Anglia!

Stopped here on a gorgeous hot day really just to have a sit down initially (2 out the 3 of us use mobility aids!) and have a quick drink. Wow the food coming out the kitchen looked amazing! I don't eat fish but even I was tempted by the look of their fish and chips!! In the end we just had drinks and a divine lemon meringue tart! Deliciously yummy! Recommend a visit

After a poor experience {see Swan Hotel, Southwold], we came here on the way home without checking first that they would be able to cater for me. I produced my list of alliums that I cannot eat; chef came out , talked it through and made me a chicken dish complete with sauce. It was an excellent response and very good eating. My wife had a very lovely fish pie. Top marks to the Boardwalk.

Having failed to have my wife’s food intolerances catered for in another establishment we arrived here at 2.30 on a Sunday - hungry and despondent. We were greeted by a charming waiter who quickly contacted the chef who personally came to discuss options with us. After a minimum of fuss we were seated and fed a fabulous meal - the glorious fish pie for me and a specially made chicken dish with veg and sauce for my wife. The quality of the food and outstanding service turned a potentially miserable day into a joyous one.

It would be unreasonable to expect Mayfair levels of service and stock availability on a bank holiday weekend in Southwold (some reviewers may need to adjust their expectations), but on the night we were there, we would have been hard pressed to find a better meal outside of the Smoke. Similar places might talk a big game and fail to deliver, relying on fancy plates and ambition, but the Boardwalk is up to it.

A fabulous meal for 11 of us. Great service, friendly staff, made a special meal for one of the family who is vegan (a great curry - very tasty). It’s lovely to hear the waves crashing on the shore too.

As a diary intolerant individual myself I was served cheese and onion crisps as the place had ran out of salted ones. Because I have had problems with this in the past I had a family member test them to check what flavour they were. Because we found out they were cheese and onion I obviously chose not to eat any of them and consulted staff. They didn’t hesitate to help me sort this problem in a quick and friendly manor. 10/10 would go there again

As a vegan and diary intolerant, I was served cheese and onion crisps after asking for ready salted (they come in a bowl rather than a packet) and only after eating a few I realised they weren't plain. When the waitress was asked to find out what flavour they were, I got no response and finally headed inside to ask, at which point 4 very immature staff went running out the back laughing.

We both chose the special - pan fried cod on a bed of pancetta and mussel risotto. It was fabulous- and I’m a good cook who’s very picky! Delicious flavours perfectly cooked. Good wine to accompany the meal and friendly efficient service. Followed by equally tasty desserts. Thank you Boardwalk I feel properly on holiday now.

Not as good as it used to be but still ok if not a little pricey. Some meals were small but Fish Pie, Burger, fish and chips were all good. So hot inside, we were all perspiring with no ventilation, not even on the leeward side of the cafe. Staff were all very pleasant and the cafe was clean. I would eat here again but probably not my first choice.Southwold was again heaving with people and even the overspill car park was full.

Having visited here a number of times previously we decided to once again. Things didn't start well as we were rather brusquely welcomed and given the impression we were a hassle and inconvenience to the staff. We had not booked and there were only 4 people in the restaurant. After a lot of humming and harring a table was offered up. I enquired as to why there was a query and was advised they had a lot of bookings. Eventually someone attended for our drinks and food order. Still hardly any diners present,. The fish n chips arrived. Nothing like the size of those being offered at the take away site and not as good as other restaurants in or close to Southwold either. Grossly overrated and over priced and taking much advantage of the location. Our advice is go else where. Staggered when discovered an automatic 10% service charge was added, that really is taking the juice. And when we left it was at best only 25% occupied.

We had booked a table for a group of 7 on a Friday evening. Food was tasty but on the pricey side and service was very very slow even though it wasn't that busy at first. The pier site advertises that there are vegetarian and vegan options but apparently this means all of the eating venues combined and there was only one vegetarian option of a mushroom burger available on the menu and sandwiches cannot be purchased in the evenings. I had the crab linguine which was tasty and others in our party enjoyed haddock and cod with chips, fish pie, salmon, garlic stuffed chicken and the veggie option. These were all lovely. We also had desserts but felt that they were very expensive particularly given the portion sizes and the texture of the sticky toffee pudding was a bit rubbery. Perhaps it was microwaved a little too long.

Arrived just before 8pm not realising that they stopped serving food at 8pm. Stood waiting to be seated with at least four staff members walking past saying that they would see to us soon. One then came up and said they stopped serving food at 8pm but could serve drinks. It was very obvious that we had been deliberately kept waiting until after 8pm so they didn't have to serve us rather than just say up front - sorry we're only selling drinks now. Needless to say we left, went to Blythburgh and would avoid at all costs in the future. A real shame as the food is nice and until this we had visited quite regularly year round.

We used to go to this cafe years ago and always enjoyed our experience. Unfortunately today our experience was not a good one. Felt like I spent more time queuing for drinks and then back for food than sitting down and enjoying the experience. The menu seems somewhat downgraded from when we went before (very limited - no JPs or salads etc.). In the counter pastries (sausage rolls and tea cakes) sold out by 11:30. But for us we ordered 2 x bacon, cheese and tomato paninis (£8ea with no salad garnish!). I think the photos show the problems, as one of the guests are in early pregnancy I am really disappointed this grey spoilt meat was served. They didn’t come round and ask how the food was like most restaurants do, so we took the plate up the girl looked confused and took it to the kitchen they offered another one (noting no apologies given) but spoilt meat was enough to put us off and they did complete a refund for the one that was off quickly. Such a shame but to be served off meat is pretty terrible for a well established cafe. Won’t be back, which is such a shame. Note: we are not people to complain so this is a rarity. The shop however is still a lovely visit.

The friendliest staff and best fried bread this side of the Pecos River. The full English breakfast is top drawer but the fried bread wins the prize! Love this place!

We were a large family out for a birthday meal and were incredibly well looked after at this amazing restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff are all amazing and so attentive. Was so good to see Chris back too . They even made a great effort to put my daughters candle on her desert for her . Thank you so much for a wonderful evening
