As a stranger to the area, checked the website that shows the shop was open. It wasn't so went to the other shop at the other side of town, where the food was excellent ,the staff friendly and very busy, good luck to them. They deserve it.

Absolutely disgusting.Had to wait ages as the gentleman was taking one persons order and cooking, serving before taking the next order. When the 6 of us finally got ours and left to go and eat we were welcomed by a horrible smell on opening the wrappers. The chips were literally burnt, cod was undercooked as well as smelling off,the sausages and battered burger were also undercooked.Should think he has to fill the fryers with fat regularly as there was so much of it in the paper. The taste was of sour fat so don’t think that has been changed for a while. This is very disappointing as had several visits here before and always been lovely. Have heard that the place is up for sale and I’m not surprised, and won’t be going back until new owners are in and hopefully get this place back on its feet. Spent over £30 between us to have to literally throw the whole lot in the hedge for the birds(That’s even if they eat them) I wouldn’t normally put posts like this on a website but honestly the worst I’ve ever had.

The website for this shop said they were open, so I rang up to place an order. A man answered in a very aggressive tone and said 'What do you want?'. I said I wanted to order some fish and chips and he replied, in the same charming manner, 'We're shut!'. I pointed out that the website said they were open and he just said 'Well _____ must have forgotten to change it.' How am I supposed to know that? I was taken aback and quite upset. If he talks to all his customers like that I'm surprised he has any left. I rang the other chip shop in town. They were friendly, polite and efficient and the food was good too. I know which I would choose in future!

We were lucky enough to be in Aldeburgh for the first Saturday of the month so we made straight for Halesworth (after a morning of sunshine and showers on Dunwich beach) for their wonderful once-a-month GF fish and chips. Delicious haddock (and skate) in what was definitely the crispiest, tastiest gluten free batter we have ever had (and we have sampled a few, from Belsize Park to Whitby. Full marks to this unassuming-looking little village take-away for really excellent food, and their friendly welcome.

Worse fish and chips I’ve ever had. The batter on the fish was completely burnt and inedible, full of grease. The chips were mostly burnt and chewy. And the scampi were burnt bullets, couldn’t taste scampi at all, just burnt dry rock hard cardboard.

We were staying a 20 minute drive away but trying to find a chippy that does gluten free is not easy. This was lovely, fish not overly flavoursome but it was moist and the batter was lovely and crispy. They don't have onion vinegar but you can have some out of the pickled onion jar if you ask nicely 😋 definitely worth a visit.

We visited this chippy 3 times during our fortnight visit to Halesworth. The owners are extremely friendly, lovely people. The food is all freshly-cooked to order and delicious. It is also very good value for money - not over-priced.

Called in here last weekend and the chips were that good we came back again yesterday and we live a fair way from Halesworth. The chips are some of the best I’ve eaten and the sausages are proper sausages, not the usual mushy ones you get at other chippies. We saw a queue at another chip pie in town and can’t believe they weren’t queuing outside here. I would definitely recommend and we’ll be back again.....probably next weekend!

We were visiting friends & wanted to buy lunch for four adults. We were able to book ahead which was helpful. Staff were very friendly & very welcoming. We all enjoyed our fish (3 cod and 1 skate), very fresh & tasty. The large chips was a little disappointing due to the size of the portion. Otherwise we were happy & will return.

No, absolutely terrible, Cod was absolutely tasteless and was soo greasy, completely covered with the stuff. The chips were mostly black and were all also very greasy, had no taste and they were just uneatable. DO NOT GO HERE it is not worth your money, I’d rather eat a ready meal from the local coop.

This place is the pits - - The couple run it are very friendly but they don't know how to cook fish & chips. The fish smelt off and the batter was under cooked - like wallpaper paste underneath. God knows how many times the chips had been re-heated. I eat fish & chips quite often but would never eat there again - - I had been before but decided another chance ........ still they fed the birds. very sorry but you do need to earn how to cook properly and change the fat more often.

Me and my husband had cod, Haddock and 2 portions of chips. The cod smelt off and was rank. Haddock was just as bad. Chips was horrible. Clearly don't skim the pan regularly or change oil as had black bits stuck all over them and was undercooked!

Called in today for a lunchtime helping of fish and chips whilst visiting family in Suffolk. Food was cooked to order which is always nicer than having the kept warm offerings some establishments serve. Three large fish and chips and curry sauce got me change from a twenty pound note which is comparable to other places. Curry sauce was very tasty and a small taster was offered pre purchase so we knew what we were getting. Fish was cooked well and enjoyed by all. Husband and wife who served us were warm and welcoming. Look forward to returning when we are next in the area( might have the curry and the gravy next time haha- in joke)

Worst fish (chips ok) ever. What a shame and waste of money. We’re on holiday and thought being so near to the coast the fish would be fabulous fresh and tasty. Not so. The batter was running in grease literally, brownish cod, boney and inedible. Most of it went in the bin. Mushy peas were just runny pea juice. Made do with the chips only but what a cheek serving that to paying customers. Maybe they were having a bad day but they shouldn’t have bad days when taking people’s money. It should always be perfect.

We had a horrible chippy supper experience from this establishment. After reading all the good reviews, we decided to whilst on holiday to give it a try...I wish we hadn’t.The pie was microwaved so made the pastry like cardboard. The chips were very dark and tasted bitter like they were cooked in old oil, I haven’t tasted chips like that in years...horrible.The fish likewise, bitter tasting batter and slimy skin left on the bottom, not nice at all. What a waste of our money!!!

Every time we get our fish & chips (and other selections) from the Halesworth chippy it's like stepping back in time - the quality and taste is just how I remember proper fish & chips from my childhood home near the sea. The owners are always friendly and helpful, you can ring up to order in advance if in a hurry. Thoroughly recommended.

I recently moved to the area and made an effort to try both chip shops in halesworth and this is the one I will always come back to. The couple that run it are great fun to chat with and I always feel welcomed when I visit. The food is freshly cooked and very tasty, and reasonably priced. I did try the seashell on one occasion and I don't know what was up with the guy doing the cooking but he seemed pretty unhappy about having customers in his shop, maybe because he wasn't very good at his job, the food was terrible and I felt ripped off. Do you yourself a favour and go to the only real chippy in halesworth.

I had thought the 'good old days' of fish and chips had long gone until David and Sarah took over the Halesworth Fish & Chip shop. One taste and we were hooked - the quality of the fish, pies, burgers etc is always way above average, freshly cooked and delicious, and the chips are exactly how chips should be. They care about their ingredients and once a month they go to great lengths to provide gluten-free options, giving people with allergies a chance to enjoy this traditional favourite. All this, and the service is always friendly and welcoming too.

I have to admit to not being a great lover of Fish & Chips but after my visit to Halesworth Fish & Chip Shop, I am now converted. The freshly cut chips have an authentic taste that the frozen varieties have lost, and in the summer they are made from locally grown New Potatoes. It works! The portions of fish are enormous, well battered & fried without being greasy. I have to say that I am now converted by the Best Fish & Chips I have ever tasted.

We were a large family out for a birthday meal and were incredibly well looked after at this amazing restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff are all amazing and so attentive. Was so good to see Chris back too . They even made a great effort to put my daughters candle on her desert for her . Thank you so much for a wonderful evening

The friendliest staff and best fried bread this side of the Pecos River. The full English breakfast is top drawer but the fried bread wins the prize! Love this place!

We used to go to this cafe years ago and always enjoyed our experience. Unfortunately today our experience was not a good one. Felt like I spent more time queuing for drinks and then back for food than sitting down and enjoying the experience. The menu seems somewhat downgraded from when we went before (very limited - no JPs or salads etc.). In the counter pastries (sausage rolls and tea cakes) sold out by 11:30. But for us we ordered 2 x bacon, cheese and tomato paninis (£8ea with no salad garnish!). I think the photos show the problems, as one of the guests are in early pregnancy I am really disappointed this grey spoilt meat was served. They didn’t come round and ask how the food was like most restaurants do, so we took the plate up the girl looked confused and took it to the kitchen they offered another one (noting no apologies given) but spoilt meat was enough to put us off and they did complete a refund for the one that was off quickly. Such a shame but to be served off meat is pretty terrible for a well established cafe. Won’t be back, which is such a shame. Note: we are not people to complain so this is a rarity. The shop however is still a lovely visit.

I visited here with my daughter and her family, and it was a treat of a place. The Sunday roast was delicious and the Yorkshires to die for. The staff were attentive and friendly. The puddings were glorious. Will definitely return.
