Went in mainly because it was cold but discovered there was no heating on so apart from the view it was not a good experience. The pub looked a bit delapidated and unclean. Food arrived quick but it was made with what appeared and tasted to be poor quality ingredients. We had an order of chips which was very small and barely warm. The tea was water from a coffee machine and not hot enough for tea. I wouldn't recommend eating there.

Simply the worst experience I’ve ever had im disgusted on the behaviour we received from the so called “manager/owner”!! His behaviour towards us was utterly vile … we were a group of friends having drinks enjoying watching the football which yes we were all happy and joyful that England were playing but apparently you can’t happy in this pub you get sniggering remarks and comments being made from the manager who was more than happy to take our money but would be rude in the mean time. If you don’t like happy people enjoying a sport that we all were there to watch then simply don’t put the the football on!!!!! I would absolutely AVOID going here

We were glad to get a harbour view seat and a large meal but the food was disappointing. My stewing beef tasted tinned and not quite warm enough. The fish was very greasy. The place isn’t kept clean and the ladies was dirty and covered in tissues, even after a staff member had just been in to put an out of use notice on one of the loos. Other people’s tissues all over the sink and floor and no bin, not acceptable.

We've come to Whitby for a holiday for a week and have been to nearly every pub and restaurant we've seen. We've been to this one twice as the food is lovely and very reasonably priced. It's a real old school pub with a nice view of the harbour. I think the sticky tables are due to them being cleaned so regularly and they must not absorb the cleaning fluid, as I've seen the guy constantly cleaning tables as soon as people leave. That didn't bother me as the fish and chips and seafood linguine were brilliant! It has a relaxing atmosphere and is dog friendly too. A good traditional pub!

Popped in for drinks last night. The pub had a very friendly atmosphere and good banter from the barman so we decided to stay for food. Food arrived promptly and was all delicious. More seafood than pasta in the seafood linguine...braised beef was tender and tasty...chips were fresh and crispy and the fish was enormous! Decor could do with a bit of updating but would definitely go again.

If i could rate this 'NO STARS' i would! Visited this pub as it looks quaint and fits so well in the area. We had been on a long walk with the dog and wanted a snack. The menu looked plentiful and really inviting. However, I just fancied a soup and crusty bread. The blonde lady behind the bar told me that it was chicken soup today and it is homemade. My husband ordered garlic king prawn and we ordered 2 small sausages for our dog. That's all, apart from drinks. It took about 3/4 of an hour to come. The soup was tinned soup and not the best either. My husbands king Prawns were just that, in oil. My dogs sausages were, evidently, yesterdays that were sat in the fridge; when it gets the hard grease that has settled on it overnight. I mentioned to the other bar person that the soup is not homemade and she confirmed this and apologised for the other bar persons misleading information. She did offer to change it but I'd waited so long for the food I thought I may as well finish it. I used the toilet before I left. There were 2 x toilets but one was bolted (it didn't appear to be a temporary thing) it said not in use. The one that was in use was disgusting, there were dirty nappies hanging out of the sanitary bin and the smell was overwhelming; no soap in the dispenser. I had to get out quick. All throughout our visit there was the landlord sat down, he didn't appear to acknowledge any customers with a smile. We left and went walking. Came home to have actual homemade food. Did not wish to return to The Board Inn within our holiday time.

We decided to go the Board Inn, as we have previously been here but only for drinks over the years. What a mistake. We ordered Lunch, I ordered the Crab Sandwich and my Husband ordered the Gammon. The Crab was absolutely vile I have never tasted anything so horrible so I left the whole lot, my husbands gammon was ok but the tomato's were dripping grease so he only ate a small amount of his meal. The pub is actually quite dirty and the toilets are filthy so i can honestly say that we will never be stepping foot in there again.

The staff were very friendly and helpful as we ordered our food, sharing seafood platter for 2 was £21, fish pie £12.50 each, steak pie £11, seafood linguine at £13 and children’s sausage & chips £5.50. All the food was plentiful and lovely with bottles of wine at £14.80 each making it all good value for money.

I've given this pub one star as zero wasn't an option. Having visited several times quite a number of years ago it has obviously changed owners since I was last there. However, I won't be back! The food arrived luke warm and undercooked. The tables are sticky, the place is full of dogs but not to worry there's a security member of staff who wipes up the carpet after they have an accident, sadly the poor woman can't eliminate the smell as a small dab with a paper towel just doesn't quite work! The little man behind the bar was incredibly rude and not quite adept at pouring drinks preferring to use one glass then sharing it out between other glasses, a novel approach to bar work , perhaps he was having a day off from his current role in the passing circus, I guess I'll never know as like I said earlier I won't be back.

Worth a visit if just to view the site and situation alone, which has been much photographed. The original pub has been sub-divided so that only a quarter of the building is now a bar area, the rest is converted into lettable accommodation. They publicans seem to manage very well with this due to the provision of outside tables, some with gazebos over. I’m not sure how the locals view this when the pub is busy. Their accommodation includes a row of cottages joined to the pub, so there may be fewer locals left in the village now.The beer available, Taylor’s Boltmaker and Knowle Spring, we’re very well kept and tasted delightful, well done.A fish and chip van visits once a week and the pub makes its own pizzas once a week, so things are in flux at the moment as I understand there are new hands at the wheel. We had two lovely sunny late afternoons there. Idyllic, so do stop for a beer.

The best thing about it is the seperate private doorway accent direct from Church Street and the great location, on Church Street near the 199 steps. Decent facilities, nothing special but definitely adequate for a few nights stay. Because it is directly on the street it can be noisy, with pedestrians during the day bit most annoyingly delivery and refuse drivers in early morning (hotel is in a pedestrian area so needs to be serviced at strange hours of night)

My family and I visited Whitby at the end of August. After a long drive we were all hungry and visited the Board Inn for food and drinks before exploring Whitby. We sat downstairs , placed our orders and waited for our food. And waited. ...finally the food came out. Out of the 5 of us, there was only 1 that actually found their food to be edible. The chios had defiantly been cooked at least twice previously. They were so hard and disgusting. My daughters burger was pink in the middle , she didn't eat it as worried it wasn't cooked. When we complained the landlady (we assumed it was as she never explained her role ) was very rude and abrupy, wobbling her head from side to side in anger at us for saying to complain. We had to ask her to stop being arsey with us. She only changed her attitude when my Auntie mentioned that we could put this on fb. She eventually refunded us £3 each. She looked and sounded, and certainly had the attitude of Madge from Benidorm. Only thing missing was the scooter and the tan . I wouldn't bother if I were you

The food was excellent and very reasonably priced, we will return and we will tell friends, The meal was plentiful and very very tasty. thank you for a great lunch.

Nothing fancy or pretentious about this place, just honest and friendly. Reasonable prices for Whitby; we had a sharing chicken platter which we couldn’t finish. The chips turned up burnt but before we could even complain, a manager whisked them away and brought fresh, great customer service.

On entering this establishment I had forgotten to wear my mask which I was soon reminded of when the landlady shouted MASK......I apologized and put on the mask, "how many people?"she asked, two I replied, "sit there" she said pointing at a seat, is this the so called Whitby welcome? We quickly had our drinks and attempted to leave by the door we were sitting next to and were then told, "you can't leave by that door that's an entrance only" some pubs take the covid rules and interperet them sensibly, then other pubs (like this one ) take it to the letter and forget that customer service still matters even when covid exists. We watched her give the same treatment to other customers, so it wasn't just us she hates, if I could give 0 stars on this I would.

This became my favourite lunchtime haunt while in Whitby. It's well run and the staff are friendly and helpful. The real ale choice is limited but it serves the best cheesey chips I've had in any pub! It's at the bottom of the famous 199 steps.

Came here for a few drinks the day before so decided to come back the next for some food and was not disappointed I had the steak and ale pie and asked for mash instead of the chip and it was lovely the side portion of gravy was a little watery but there was plenty of gravy in the pie pot so wasn’t too bad, would definitely recommend and will definitely come back for food again, friendly service to top it off, all in all great experience

Came here last year the food was lovely, a weekend away we booked for a Sunday lunch today for 1pm, we waited 20 minutes for table service, then waited a further 40 minutes for the food to arrive, it was awful, placed on the table with no cutlery it arrived 5 minutes later, food going cold, the gravy was covered in pork fat and runny, the puddings were stodgy and shouldn’t have been served, the cabbage cooked in wine a basil was absolutely disgusting, £8.95 per meal should’ve asked for a refund, moral of the story once bitten twice shy, stay clear of this place, two other couples left their food too.

Had a few drinks here drinks not over expensive. Decided to have a light snack got the cheese burger and chips . I have got to say it was the best cheese burger and chips I've ever had . Burger served how it should be on the pink side full of flavour and so juicy. If only more places would do this rather than serving a bone dry over cooked burger .

Visited on June 1st 2021. Passing by and saw they were open for meals and that the were dog friendly. Although they were very busy the managed to accommodate us a family of 5 + a dog. We ordered a variety of meals and they were all home cooked and delicious. The Theakstons was also first class. All done under strict covid compliance i hasten to add. We will return next time we are in Whitby.

We have just spent a lovely weekend in Whitby and are twice in this pub. First night we thoroughly enjoyed our seafood platter to share. Portions huge, couldn't eat it all. Second night had beautiful haddock and chips, so fresh you could still taste the sea. Doorman a scream, so funny, very personable. You will have to book a table as it has to confirm to the rules but with the fabulous views it's a must.

It's a cosy traditional unpretentious pub with four real ales and stunning views of Whitby harbour. It's close to the church and the Abbey ruins

Great real pub. No frills, great location with views out to sea, small but decent menus, friendly helpful staff and most importantly really tasty food. The scampi and chips and sausage and mash were both fantastic and reasonably priced too in this expensive little town. Those two meals and two alcoholic drinks was £27. The Old Peculiar was just divine after a cold walk along the coast. It was also clean and felt very covid safe

What a lovely place this is in Whitby. The staff are friendly and can’t do enough to help. All meals were super tasty and served promptly. Great selection of drinks and bar meals. In the difficult time we are in we felt extremely safe with all the measures put in place - very clean, distanced tables and mask etc. Definately visit again

Popped in for a drink by the harbour, and the food looked good so stayed for lunch. Had pie, & a chicken & chorozi burger. Both were lovely, both portions were massive. Staff friendly and helpful, pub clean and good covid measures in place

Got wrong for talking to loud. Ordered some shots but when trying to order some more was told we couldn't have any. Got wrong again for laughing. When we complained that no staff we coming to see if we wanted any more drinks a woman came up and and started telling us to be quiet and settle down even though we weren't noisy. Then a man who said he was the owner basically came up and told us to get out then told one of the girls to phone security. If we realised beforehand that you weren't allowed into this pub if you liked to talk and laugh we wouldn't of gone in. Reading some other reviews there's a few negative ones concerning how rude the staff are. Will never enter this pub again

We only wanted drinks and as there were no free tables in the pub we shown down to the restaurant and had a drink there, which was lovely as we could see across to the harbour and watch the boats going by. Once a table became available we moved up to the pub area, staff were very friendly and it had a nice atmosphere, unlike the Duke of York next door who only wanted customers who wanted food. We returned again the following day. Would definitely return if was in Whitby again.

Was a bit dubious upon entry, as the decor looked tired and there were lots of dogs in, which generally puts us off. However as we had already signed in we decided to stay and when our food arrived we pleasantly surprised. The seafood platter was massive, plenty to share for two and was some of the nicest calamari i've ever had. I wouldn't hesitate to call here again.

I did not stay in the hotel section of the Board inn however the bar areas are always very clean and the bar area has an excellent selection of drinks - the meals in the restaurant are good - not brilliant but good value for money - there is also entertainment in the bar most nights

This is a handy place to eat when visiting Whitby Abbey especially after climbing up the steps. Decent number of tables inside and out. It can get busy and likely there may be a queue. It is part of the Youth Hostel and serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, cakes as well as larger meal options. We all had paninis which were nice enough and the side order of chips were nice. Nothing spectacular but it filled a gap well and with nice views.

Called in for fish and chips to share - £10. Opened the box to find the fish in three pieces. Rancid oil taste to both fish and hard chips. Truly the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten.

Use this pub regularly drinks at good price food reasonable for this type of pub. Comfortable surroundings, not the best weatherspoons compared to many others. Come here regularly could do with more staff.

The cat's pyjamas? Dog's dinner more like. After initially nearly leaving due to the horrible atmosphere we settled and ordered a breakfast and avocado and halloumi on toast with two coffees. Our drinks arrived quickly but the food mustve taken about 45 minutes to come, with no acknowledgement of the long wait. It wasnt particularly busy. When the food arrived it was awful. The breakfast was greasy and badly cooked and I couldnt finish it. The avocado and halloumi on toast was literally a few slices of avocado and overcooked halloumi, on the side of some burnt toast. Dont bother, there are far nicer places in Scarborough.

For a large pub and the fact it was late on in the day on a Saturday, it was very clean and the staff were very polite. Food was good and nice selection of beer.
