Of course, the weather was wonderful, which helped the ambiance but we had a lovely time at The Blue Lias today, sitting outside to eat, watching boats going past on the canal. The food, fish and chips, was basic but good quality and well-cooked. The staff were pleasant and helpful. There were plenty of clean water bowls for our dogs, which I had to fill so the water was fresh.

With lovely sunny weather, we came for an early dinner. My partner had fish and chips and I had steak and ale pie. The food was good - a swan wanted to attract my attention whilst we were eating and pecked my arm! Great location and friendly staff.

Unexpected great visit. We set off to visit the Boat, where we were met by a dour faced & rude Woman telling us the boat is closed. We drive on a few miles & find the lias. Lovely, unpretentious place with the best steak pie ever! Lovely warm staff & now weird ‘locals only’ feeling. Bravo.

Lovely position and very quaint. Very dated inside which actually adds to its charm. Nice to see a pub not swallowed up by the brewery or a chain. Hanging baskets outside are wonderful. Staff were very friendly too. Its clearly family run and again that is lovely to see. Unfortunately the food lets it down. After we ordered we were surprised that all our food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. We had the specials - Chicken and Mushroom pie. It was clear by the taste and consistency that it was made with a tin of mushroom soup and they added cooked chicken and a puff pastry lid. Whilst it had plenty of chicken, this is quite poor by todays standards. Portions were small and the chips were quite under cooked on all our meals. Our childrens meals were all frozen and put in the oven affairs. Overall the food was more like a take away cafe than a pub. However lovely for canal side drinks.

Setting along the canal fabulous. Selection of rolls/sandwiches abit basic, need more variety. Tuna mayo roll tasty. Didn't find staff very helpful, abit abrupt (maybe the heat), couldn't bring salt and pepper to your table, get it yourself from the bar. Couldn't have lemon & lime in a pint glass, no ice creams in ice cream fridge (told wouldnt sell them as end of summer) Disappoint with the staffs' attitude.

Just called in for a family meal and drink after a quick visit for a drink last week. The pub location is excellent and last week we had a wonderful relaxing drink. Today, however, was shocking. We ordered our first drinks and food at the table then proceeded to wait for over an hour for our food. Other people who arrived after us were getting their food near enough straight away. We asked what was happening and eventually we were told that the order had not been put through. The landlady (I presume) offered us no apology at all and basically didn't seem bothered whether we had a meal or not. She said you can wait if you want or not in a not very amiable tone and walked away.We did then get our food and ordered more drinks. Then the same happened again, we waited and waited for our drinks. We had to ask again where our drinks were only to be told that 1 of the drinks had run out. I had already heard the same barmaid tell someone on the table next to us that the drink had run out over 15 minutes earlier. She had obviously forgotten our order again. When she did come back we cancelled our drinks order and paid and left very disappointed.Such a shame for a wonderful pub with a great setting.

We visited here in the evening during the eat out to help out scheme. We were lucky enough to be able to sit outside and it was absolutely beautiful. The service was friendly, better than many places I have been to. The food was delicious, I’m quite a fussy eater and a vegetarian and I had a couple of options to choose from. Lovely presentation and great quality, the chocolate pudding was ridiculously good! Can’t wait to go back. I would note- the waitresses could know the menu a little bit better to be able to advise on gluten free etc, while the menu is marked out very well the desserts didn’t indicate dietary requirements.

From the outside this pub is stunning sitting alongside the grand union canal there is enough mooring points on both sides for up to about 10 boats it has a lovely large garden area and had very good Covid system in place We moored up next to the garden and followed the instructions, where you go to one part of the bar to order then another part to pay we ordered from a restricted menu sausage and chips for two and pint and a half of larger which came to £22 which we thought was a little bit much, when the food arrived in plastic containers the chips were a lovely golden colour and three nice looking sausages and it did taste very nice the service was quick and professional and it's an ideal stop for anyone with disabilities I did not use the toilets as we were sat right next to our narrowboat, We will next time we go on a trip to Stratford call in and have a full meal I do highly recommend this establishment

Lunched here today. What a wonderful location, lovely decor indoors and picture perfect outdoor space. But we were so disappointed with the food. We paid £11 for 2 ham baguettes, expecting nice crusty french-style bread with enough salad on the side to add to the baguettes. What we got was dry soft rolls, with a bit of margarine spread and a few slices of cheap ham literally shoved inside. They looked and tasted completely unappetising. Oh, and the salad was 1 slice of cucumber, a tiny piece of tomato and a few shreds of iceberg lettuce. We would have added this pub to our list of regular lunch dates for the venue, but won't be going back unless the lunch menu is upgraded

Visited with wife a and two grandchildren. Kids had chicken nuggets, chips and beans and fish cakes, chips and beans. Clean plates from bothe of those. Mrs had Steak and Ale pie. Impressive amount of filling in the pie. Very tasty. Slight taste of peppers, which the Mrs hates, and repeated on her. I had the beef, Sunday roast. Disappointing. £8.95 for a small portion of over-cooked, dry but falling apart beef. Suspect it was microwaved in gravy as ordered. Lone floret each of cauliflower and broccoli. Carrot batons, peas, two scoops of mash, two descents roasted and an anemic frozen Yorkshire pudding. All awash with a thin gravy. They need to up their game with the roasts. There is better Sunday roast fare at several pubs in the vicinity. Not asking for The Huntsman Carvery standard, just a bit more passion for the dishes served up for a premium priced pub roast. Staff were welcoming and friendly enough.

Called in here for an evening drink by the canal, the floral displays are absolutely stunning, best Ive seen in the area, you cant fault the outside areas, the grass is cut nicely and everything well maintained, also the canal is a bonus. All beautifully kept. The pub itself is a traditional, if slightly dated, but cosy pub, its not a gastro pub, its good honest pub grub, drinks nothing special, but it is what it is, prices are good and staff were nice. My only criticism the car park is full of pot holes and there was one patch of dead plants and a dead conifer outside the kitchens that just let it down. Definitely coming back for an evening meal sitting by the canal.

A stunning location on the canal and close to a small reservoir - it is just lovely and very popular for lunches outside in nice weather. Sadly, the food is very dated and is simply not as good as other pubs in the region. For example, fish and chips in most restaurant pubs has been updated to meet 2019 expectations - crispy batter, triple cooked chips, lashings of mushy or fresh peas with fresh lemon or lime. Here their version is a mediocre breaded plaice with frozen chips and value peas - looking very 1970’s. It was fine, but not great - and the salad that was ordered with it was just as ‘okay’. It’s a shame because it has the potential to be fabulous. We will go back again for sure, but won’t get too excited about the food.

The three of us arrived at 19.53 and the couple in front of us were already being told the kitchen had shut for the evening. We've used the canal that this pub sits on a number of previous times. The food may well be good (I don't know as we didn't get to eat there), however, next time I'll naturally carry on down to the next pub to eat (which is what we ended up doing this night) as I can see no reason why I should patronise an establishment where the chef decides they won't cook anymore meals that evening. I heard someone make a remark that's it's the chef that runs a pub, it was certainly the case that night as they lost 5 customers!

Salad consisted of a bit of lettuce, one slice of cucumber and a quarter of a tomato. No dressing. I had mushroom soup. Heinz tinned without a doubt which is great at home but definitely a joke when paying pub prices. Brie bites, deep fried, not good and definitely not worth the money. It's taken me a while to write this review - I wasn't going to initially but finally decided I should. My family was visiting from abroad last summer and whilst my husband and I had never been to the Blue Lias I thought it would be a nice, casual place along the canal and we wanted to stay local. It is a very nice location but horrible food. I didn't realise until after we'd left when I was asking everyone how they liked it that my sisters meal was still cold/semi frozen in the middle (she didn't want to tell me in the pub for fear of hurting my feelings as I was really excited to take my family here). My meal was passable, but didn't blow me away and my husband was not thrilled with his meal either. The kids didn't complain. All in all for 5 people it cost over £100 plus drinks and it was SO not worth it and we haven't recommended this place or been back since.

In the winter months the fires are on and its very cosy inside. The food is basic and the bar waiting area is small which keeps the place from getting very busy, however when you get caught in a long queue wait to hear the disgruntled noises from people waiting to order haha. Site is adult only, another bonus. Showers and toilets are clean and shower runs for long time before having to push button a second time. Site has two ponds for fishing and Stockton reservoir next door. Only gripe is the Blue Lias pub doesn't accommodate dogs. It is canal side with both boats with dogs and lots of caravans on their own site also with dogs. There are at least three areas in the pub which they could have one area for well behaved dogs. I am sure they lose trade to the three other pubs within walking distance that are happy for dogs to come in. We ate out elsewhere as we couldn't go to the Blue Lias where we would have done if dog friendly.

The Blue Lias is a lovely inn located next to the canal. The menu is varied but... this is where the fun started! The starters were excellent; after careful consideration and looking at the specials board two of the party decided on gammon steak with pineapple. But it wasn't available! It was explained that the meat order comes in on Thursdays ... it was Thursday! I ordered Chicken Kiev as a replacement - lovely big juicy chicken breast - minus the Kiev! We then ordered dessert - Chocolate Honeycomb cheesecake mmm - not available! It had been put into the freezer! Ice cream sundae - choice of 3 ice creams, but none that I really liked - no vanilla! But suddenly the Chocolate Honeycomb Cheesecake became available! So two of us had that! And it was delicious. The waiter was very patient with us and good humoured.

Came back the following day for dinner and was not disappointed with the choice, not huge but adequate, even a specials board. You order at the bar and they bring it to you either inside or out. Great setting.

Moored outside, as there is space for at least 3 narrow boats. The menu is not too extensive, and there were three specials too. All were available. You order at the bar, and meal is brought to your table. A good selection of drought ales were also available. I would have liked to have seen a lighter beer, as all were over 4.5%. However, a very good meal. I particularly enjoyed the cheesecake.

Stayed in our motorhome at the Blue Lias campsite for four nights on a pitch overlooking the Grand Union canal. The pub had probably the best display of hanging baskets I have ever seen, the site was immaculate with its own small fishing lake in the centre. We arrived on Sunday and left on Thursday so missed the weekend which apparently are full up! The toilet and shower block are very clean and you need the security code to enter, the owner drives around the site daily to check all is well with campers. We were glad we arrived with a full tank of water as the tap by the pub entrance would have been difficult to reach due to cars parked, the campsite tap again with pitches being occupied. Pay on arrival at the bar, we arrived at noon and there was already a queue for Sunday lunches which is always a good sign, the food looked delicious! We ate at the pub twice during our stay, the brie and bacon fishcakes were large and tasty, chips were very hot and salad very fresh, very good value for £7.95. The second time we had pork in a lovely mushroom sauce, again delicious for £9.95. It's lovely to sit outside and watch the world go by but we did wait until 8pm as it was so very hot. Looking forward to visiting again both for the campsite and food!

Lovely pub to sit outside Being charged nearly £2 for a flat lime and soda was very overpriced Food has never been great, quite old fashioned menu and £10 for a salad was way too much

Loved sitting outside by the canal on a lovely sunny afternoon. Portions weren't huge but we all enjoyed the cottage pie, chicken in wine sauce, pork, and fishcakes. They were all just under a tenner. Good dessert menu at 4.25. Beers were on and nice white wine. Staff were all very young but good service. Will come back again.

Visiting a family member nearby we were recommended this venue for lunch. We arrived just in time as the kitchen was due to close but fortunately the staff were able to accommodate us if we ordered immediately. My first choice wasn’t available so we both chose the steak. The weather was glorious and you can’t visit this place without taking advantage of their outdoor seating area. We managed to get a spot right by the cannel which was lovely. I could have sat here all day watching the world go by. The meal itself was average, the steak was brilliantly cooked and for once when I asked for it to be cooked medium, it was cooked medium. The chips on the other hand were over cooked and hard. I must admit I fed most of them to the ducks, so at least they were fed well on the day. Would I go out of my way to go again? No...the location is the selling point to this establishment.

Three of us were looking for a pleasant place to enjoy a drink or two on a sunny afternoon, and thought of this pub.

Great location, but pub and garden are a bit of a tip. Beer pretty grim; I couldn’t finish my pint. Menu like something from the 1970s.

Took a friend for lunch on Monday we sat by the Canal and ordered lunch ; How very disappointing the Scampi and Chips were straight from the freezer and the salad consisted of lettuce and thinly cut tomatoe ; Prawn cocktail was just has exciting, such a shame has they know the venue is attractive , if they just up the game in the kitchen , then this place would be amazing

What a lovely picturesque place to fish and relax. Last Saturday afternoon/early evening my husband and father in law decided to go for a few peacefull hours of fishing. Both very busy people and needed a well earned break from work. I along with my mum in law and children joined them a little later with a lovely picnic. I really was a nice spot and very picturesque. Definitely come back and maybe even camp for the weekend as this is available along with a lovely restaurant which we have eaten at previous visit.

First time I’ve been back here in a while and this time was with friends, the wait for food was longer then usual but that was to be expected as it was a lovely day, only negative was the fact the party of 3 of us ordered on the same table number but even though I ordered first my food came last as their was a mix up with the order, would return though

This is a typical country pub. It is not luxury and not fancy. On Sunday we had a roast dinner, it was the sort of thing that you'd make at home - it was really well cooked (so maybe not quite like I'd make at home!)... the meat was lovely; there were 4 different veg + yorkshire & good gravy.

Big thanks to the restaurant team at the manor, especially Michael, for ensuring a perfectly choreographed family lunch for 18. You couldn't have been more helpful or efficient.
