Great Pub with friendly staff and excellent food and drinks and beer garden. Well worth seeking out - a Nailsea institution

Very friendly and helpful bar staff. The cask ales were in excellent condition. We had hoped to get Sunday lunch but the kitchen was closed. However, the two young women who were keeping the bar made us a lovely lentil salad with homegrown heritage tomatoes, mixed leaves and a homemade cheese and onion pie. With a pint of cask ale each, the total bill was £20. Sat in the garden admiring the abundant wildflowers. This is a rare gem of a pub. The absolute opposite end of the scale from a corporate pubco.

My first visit and I hope not my last. If you enjoy a proper pub which sticks to the basics then this is the place to go, nothing plastic here, simply good beers and ciders, simple furnishings and limited food. A gem of a pub for those, like me, who like nothing more than a straightforward, welcoming, untouched pub.

Over the years i have frequented this pub hundreds and hundreds of times. However, after visting it a few times of late, i was disgusted with the rude, unhelpful and obnoxious pub staff/management. I remember when the pub staff here had manners. Will never spend my money there again Rude - very rude

Very quirky pub with good selection of local ales and ciders. Had Beef Brisket which was excellent. Good veg. Polite and helpful staff. Also do pizza and pie nights Better than your average pub. Roasts were £17 but good value

We booked for a Sunday lunch, without asking the price. When we saw it was £17 we thought we were in for a treat. When ordering we were surprised we had to pay an extra £3.50 for a portion of cauliflower cheese. We found the meat selection was chicken, brisket of beef or belly of pork, three of the cheapest cuts of meat available. When it arrived we were disappointed with the meal content. My brisket was over cooked and separating. We had two roast potatoes, a quarter of a parsnip, quarter of a carrot, some mashed up carrot and swede, greens and for some reason a half of beetroot. My wife’s belly of pork was so tough she could not ear it and I could not even cut it. The waitress came to see if everything was acceptable and when we mentioned my wife’s tough meat she immediately offered her a full refund, instead of trying to supply a more tender piece of meat. We left very dissatisfied and vowed never to go there again.

Not only is the landlord a purveyor of fine ciders he is also the creator of the best pork pies and sausage rolls available. Don’t miss the chance to fill your boots next time you’re in.

Today (a Wednesday lunchtime in September) the available food was terrible and the Butcombe was poor - just about drinkable - perhaps it needed changing. Many years ago I went to a fab nearby pub called the Blue Flame - but I'm sure this isn't it. Where has the good one gone? Info about the Blue Flame missing from most websites : a) no food at lunchtime on a Wednesday b) cash only c) stale beer (but good if you happened to pick the right beer)

One of the last remaining authentic British pubs in existence. Great beer, old world atmosphere. Just the place to enjoy a quiet pint or three with a few mates.

Fantastic old pub , very friendly land lord and lady , very friendly bar staff too , proper local pub , very few left like this now , and lovely home cooked lunches are available on weds, thurs and Friday lunch times and some Sundays but you need to check which ones and book in advance , it also has a massive beer garden to the back or seating out the front to sit and watch the world go by with a lush pint of proper cider ( or 2) 10/10 😀

As others have said do not expect luxury and comfort but this is a real traditional pub. Richard the barman has excellent knowledge of ales and cider and the cask beer is absolutely sublime. The cider according to the wife was extremely quaffable. We didn't have a Sunday meal because it was fully booked, showing that it must be very popular. Highly recommended especially the friendly staff. Go and try it.

Heard a lot of good reports about this time warp pub. The real ales served straight from the barrel are excellent value for money snacks and very friendly staff and locals. It won’t be everyone’s style of pub but it’s amazing if you’re a fan of plastic pubs and beer then don’t go to the flame.

Quite why Trip Advisor ranks this as 15th of 32 restaurants in Nailsea I’m really not sure, since it’s not a restaurant and it’s not in Nailsea. So if that’s what you’re looking for, read no further… What it is though, is a splendidly authentic and unspoilt pub that has resisted all urges to be refurbished or gastrofied or follow any other modern trends. Since the previous landlord passed away few years back, it has been spruced up a bit and the ladies will no doubt appreciate the inside loo, but it has lost none of it’s character and still seems as popular as ever. Internally it consists of a couple of small, basic rooms at the front and a good sized garden at the rear which is a very pleasant spot. Food on our visit consisted of a choice of cheese & onion rolls from a basket on the counter or pork & sage scotch eggs. We went for a couple of the latter and these were pretty good, with a perfectly cooked egg, still with a slightly soft yolk and tasty sausage meat around the outside. The only condiment available was mustard (brown sauce would have been nice!) and whilst scotch eggs can sometimes be a little dry on their own, that was not the case here. I believe they usually have a number of pies available as well, but a notice said that these would be back on in a few weeks. There’s a good choice of local beers and ciders on tap and my Thatcher’s Dry went down very well. All in all, a “must visit” pub, but definitely not a restaurant!

We visited last night to sample the pie and mash which have become a Friday evening thing. They are indeed delicious. I had pork and cider and my friends had the beef and they were amazing. They also offer an interesting veggie option each week.

We popped in for a swift pint after a walk round the woods. What a lovely place! Just like I remember pubs being like when my Dad used to take me, when I were a lad! Evan has the same smell, part beer, part tobacco smoke (most of the customers were outside, puffing away), part furniture polish... Lots of bitsNbobs stuck to the walls, which didn't look to have been papered since the sixties, very well worn lino flooring, suggested some ghastly themed retro refit, but no! I think this is the real thing! Landlord purveyed pints, poured from the barrel, from behind a counter, with straight-faced efficiency and - oh wonder of wonders, that rare thing - a selection of rolls at a couple of quid a pop. This pub is remarkable for being just simply a common-or-garden pub, just that, no frills, no pretentions. Just a place to go to if you want a couple of glasses of beer and a snack. Brilliant!!

No pensamos volver.

Yet another AMAZING brunch/breakfast! This really is the perfect place to go!! Can't imagine where some of the low score feedbacks come from?? Or why? I've been in the hospitality business over 30 years, and what is offered here, is as good as it gets! Great service, great value, and super quality... can not fault it!!! Thank you for the service You provide. And your plants are also super quality, and great value. See you next month... :))

The cafe was open late for the carnival night. My band 'Guillotine Dream' were due to play a gig at The Electric Banana and after soundcheck and a couple of pints in The Duke of Oxford we stumbled upon this cafe. Although two of our members live in Weston and I lived there for 20 years it was our first time in this cafe. Our local friend who was with us had also never been in there. We were greeted very warmly by the staff (fellow midlanders btw!) and were served very reasonably priced and very tasty food. We didn't have to wait long. My friends had beef stew and I had all day veggie breakfast which came with a coffee and toast and was delicious and filling. They said the stew was lovely too. I would recommend this cafe wholeheartedly! Thanks to the staff! Ian.

Overpriced and food not fresh. I had the falafel, guac, sweetcorn relish baguette. The baguette was tough and tasted shop bought. Falafels were cold, flavourless, dense and also didn't seem freshly made. Disappointing considering the crazy prices
