The Blue Anchor in Brighton and Hove

As a pub this place is rather average however on Tuesday to Saturdays the place is essentially a Thai eatery with amazingly tasty food. The choices are extensive, the food always fresh and well prepared and the team who prepare it are super helpful. All of the staff are great and prices are all very reasonable.

We love thai food and have visited Thailand many times, so when I read the reviews here and we were staying in Portslade we thought we would try it. The pub itself had a nice feel and the service by the bar staff was excellent. The food however was disappointing, the thai fish cakes were very synthetic in taste. The beef special, with basil and mint, was nice and spicy but the balance wasn't right, it was too fragrant. The noodle dish was again spicy but lacked in any kind of flavour and was really disappointing. 

We really enjoyed our dinner here. Tasty food that was about the best we've had since our holiday in Thailand and friendly staff.

This place is a hidden gem. Really good, authentic, thai food hidden away in a local pub. Really good value( £10 for main including rice). Great service.

Really tasty Thai food! Will definitely be going back for seconds. The lady who cooked was so lovely, friendly and chatty. Thank you for a very tasty meal.

Had mixed starters and Thai green curry, wife had stir fry. All dishes were excellent in taste and portions. You would be disappointed or hungry when you leave. One of the best I've had. Staff very nice too.

I've reviewed here before, but that was pre-Covid. We went there to eat again this evening and it was great. Social distancing is very well recognised, hand sanitizer plentiful and the staff wear masks. The food is really good and it's lovely to see Apple again. She certainly knows how to cook up great Thai dishes. Stacey who served us is really friendly and welcoming as well. Lovely place and great to return

Had a lovely meal here on a Saturday evening with family to celebrate a birthday. Table was decorated beautifully for when we arrived and the staff accommodated for two extra unexpected people in our group which was awesome. Food was delicious even with 11 of us to feed and only 1 chef doing any of the cooking. Massive thanks to Dan and the Team for helping make this birthday memorable for us

Went for lunch with friends on a Saturday, we had pre booked. We ordered a mixed starter for three, and a main each as a lunch special. The mains arrived almost immediately. We agreed to have the starter with the mains, rather than sending them back. The starters arrived half way through our meal, and were for two not three, so we had to cut them up. The food was ok, tasty but not hot enough. My stir fry could have done with a couple of minutes in a really hot wok. The bill came and was, inevitably, wrong. If this restaurant is going to succeed a lot more effort is needed.

Visited on Saturday , had table booked for 6:30 , finally got served at 7:20 ! There were 10 of us , food arrived over a period of 30 mins , so some had finished before others had even been served .Those of us that had ordered the green curry were very disappointed to find only 4 pieces of processed chicken in it . It was basically a bowl of vegetable soup !. Cannot understand the rave reviews , they clearly cannot cope with more than a half full restaurant , No apologies for terrible service were offered . Massive room for improvement .

Wow, popped in to watch the football and what a change. The pub looks fantastic. Restaurant looks really pretty with great colour scheme, fairy lights and candles. Really nice place to sit and eat the amazing Thai food they are serving again. The main bar is everything a local pub should be. relaxed vibe, pool tables and football. Friendly bar staff that care and just a good vibe in general. Really worth a visit with so much TLC gone into it. As local people we are so pleased to have a new and better Anchor back. Well done.x

Smashing thai food .. had the mixed starter for two , spring rolls tempura vegetables satay chicken prawns in blankets and dipping sauces followed by a red curry (delicious).. wife had massaman curry.. very satisfying and the presentation was good.. wish I could go everyday and eat everything off the menu

I'm so glad that the new owners have taken Apple and her team back. The Thai food here is amazing. Haven't been here since the old owners sacked them! But now can have a decent Thai more often. Fantastic

Decidí probar este pub hace un par de semanas. Se veía bien desde fuera y aunque pocas personas por dentro, se veía limpia. Fui al bar y pedí un vino de Pino Grigio. El hombre del bar miró de forma extraña y dijo que no creía que tuvieran eso. Le pregunté qué vino seco tenían. Dijo que tendría que comprobar. Se fue y volvió y dijo que no tenían vino! Bueno, eso es una calle 1 en un pub. Dijimos bien y nos fuimos. Otro tipo detrás de la barra nos fulminó con la mirada. No volvería Una publicación sin vino! Todo muy extraño. Estamos en los años 50 y vestimos con elegancia (tal vez ese sea el problema). Mi compañero ni siquiera comprobó si tenían Harvey's o alguna cerveza. Qué extraña situación.

Ate here on a Thursday evening. Pub was quiet. Restaurant was dead. Food was ok but lacked atmosphere overall. Would have been so much better had there been other diners.

Had a table booked for a pre Christmas get together last night.

OK as a pub but little atmosphere due to lack of reasonable number of customers even on a Saturday night. Prices are reasonable and place is cosy but it lacks sole.

Disappointed, as a regular red wine drinker I was disappointed when a glass of red was not very nice. Had an unusual aroma and the taste made me queasy. When mentioned to staff was made to feel it was my fault the wine was not nice. No apology, no alternative wine available,asked for coffee instead, not possible. No customer service, not welcoming

Another meal at the best Thai restaurant around here. I was disappointed to learn tonight that the chefs have been told they need to leave. What sad news. We will have to find another pub to go to now as we only come for the Thai. Sad times

A lovely mid-week meal ,good value and most important good food , A very helpful lady behind the bar , will be going back

A friend had said they’d had a great take away from here so I wanted to give it a try. Family were apprehensive as the pub from the outside doesn’t look that inviting. Inside is a nice surprise with tables ready for dining. We all had 2 courses and we all enjoyed our food. Female staff were friendly .Food is ordered at the bar and bought to your table. The bar with pool tables and tv is separate so it is like 2 separate businesses when eating- just like being in a restaurant. I will go again and am tempted to order take out too.

Have eaten here twice now and find food to be on a par with Thailand where I have visited 8 times. Service is fine and portion sizes are generous, recommend Pad Thai which came with six large shrimp, prawn tempura also excellent. Do not sit in public bar as very noisy.

Fresh and authentic food served in Portslade. Tried the spicy squid and it was delicious. Definitely I will be back!

I am in my early 30s and visit this pub restaurant for Thai food regularly with different family members of all ages. It is always a hit! Delicious, authentic Thai food for around £7-£10 a main. They will tweak food to suit (e.g. My sister always asks for no onions in her massaman) and the friendly Thai chefs bring the food out fresh from the kitchen. They do a lunch menu which looks good value but I am yet to try. If you like spicy food I recommend the beef dish with rice on the specials!

Ordered from the online menu, and was charged more on collection and payment as they had increased their prices BUT had not updated their online menu prices.

Having got no cooker or hobs for a couple of weeks my and my partner are having to eat out or get takeaways, he mentioned this place as it’s just around the corner from where we live so we decided to give it a go.

Had another delicious Thai meal last night in the Blue Anchor in their roomy restaurant in the pub. Can't beat their value for money starter and for the main their Duck dish is divine,not forgetting their yummy Jasmine rice. Always excellent value and service.

Really had a good time here, bar staff a good laugh. Not bad entertainment either. The food is amazing, only served till 9am, not happy about that

The food here is really well-prepared Thai meals. The specials are usually the ones to go for. It has a very naïve feel which adds to the charm of it all. You can also take the dog which is great for us as there are no other Thai restaurants in the area that allow them. At least not that side of the kitchen lol.

Boundary road Portslade is not the first place you would think of to go for great Thai food..... not until now anyway. The Blue Anchor relaunched itself a couple of years back now and added Thai food to the menu and frankly the results are delicious! My hubby and I have been about four times now and have never had a bad meal. The food is fresh and flavoursome and quite authentic. Service is friendly and prompt and it is not that expensive. They also welcome dogs as it is a pub which is great for us. It is one of those places we forget to go to but when we remember it we are never dissapointed. The food just makes me smile.

Went for a drink and a meal on my own as was in town on business drove past and see the somewhat hidden Thai food sign wasn't expecting much walked in lovely barmaid anyway food was good if a bit mean atmosphere good after eating went in to bar to get a drink after about 5 minutes started talking to the barmaid Lara or loz if I remember lovely girl very chatty all in all I would say 8 out of 10 and I've been in hell of a lot of food pubs in my travels oh and loz thanks top notch barmaid

Had a takeaway from Blue Anchor this week, 25.3.17, and was disappointed to find the portions were small. The quality if food was good, but will think again before ordering a takeaway from here.

Regular visitor because the Thai food is absolutely excellent - well worth travel kin although first impressions may be less, er, impressive.

Came here for Sunday lunch so cannot comment on the Thai food. Understand it is a new chef though. Sunday roasts were really nice and the meat was cooked brilliantly. The accompanying veg etc. was frozen rather than fresh though so not quite as impressive. We were the only ones in which is a shame because the food is really great and should be more popular (maybe a marketing issue?). Service good though a little inefficient serving drinks one at a time. Value excellent. On the whole really nice and should have more interest than it does currently.

Just had a relaxing evening at this recently refurbished pub/restaurant. The food was fresh, tasty and nicely presented. The starter platter was delicious! Also the meal was not expensive.

The food here was amazing! The pub is nice but doesn't prepare you for the fantastic food they serve. We eat Thai food a lot and although it is nearly always tasty it can be quite predictable - too many use the same ready made sauces; but here the spicing and fresh herbs produced a depth of flavour that felt genuinely Thai. I particularly loved the fish dish I had (steamed cod with ginger? it was a few weeks ago!) and a friend's pad thai looked good too. Sadly we were only on a short visit but I'm definitely looking forward to a return trip - I'm very envious of my friends who live just round the corner! The low prices were also much appreciated!

We just can't get enough of the food at the Blue Anchor. Sometimes you just know that food is prepared not just with skill, but also with love. The menu is extensive and priced sensibly for the location. The bonus is that this is also a very good pub!

The night we went there weren't many people in so the atmosphere seemed a bit flat. We did have to wait quite a while for our food, which the person apologised for so perhaps it was an unusually long wait. It was definitely worth it though, the food was really tasty and I thought the prices were excellent. Definitely not our last visit.

a brilliant meal. the main course was truly excellent, hot but not too hot: i had the duck in a red curry sauce. starters were OK but I would probably not have them again as the main is so good. sme great pictures of old Portslade on the wall as well showing what the canal used to look like. apparently they found all these images in the attic. thankfully they saved them and you get an insight into the social history of the area.

The Thai food was outstanding, as good as any Thai restaurant I've been to. Me and my friend went and were not disappointed. The food came out quickly and the positions were perfect. We sat round the main bar side but if you want a quieter place they have another side perfect for couples. I would definitely go again.

This pub is very clean and nice but what makes it great is the Thai food great value fresh and utterly delicious!! The service is also always with a smile !

Although we live in Southwick, so a stones throw away from this pub, we've never been. Hubby wanted somewhere to watch the rugby so we decided to try here. Going into a different pub for the first time can be interesting as first impressions tend to be how friendly and welcoming the bar staff are. This place didn't disappoint. The guy behind the bar was very friendly from the off and when we said we were there to watch the rugby he put the sound on the TV for us without question. We settled on a comfortable sofa and enjoyed the match with a bottle (or 2) of wine each. Food service for the evening starts from 5.30 pm. Perfect timing. The young lady behind the bar at this point was also super friendly. We enjoyed a large portion of crackers to start, followed by hubby having chicken satay, whilst I opted for the chilli squid, which was delicious but very spicy. To be expected though as it is advertised with 3 chilli's next to it on the menu! Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his chicken Penang curry. I chose one of the specials which was crispy sea bass fillet in a red Thai sauce and vegetables. It was packed with the most amazing flavour and everything about it was superb, with the fish being moist and flavoursome and the vegetables being perfectly crispy. It won't be too long at all before we're there again.

We made a beeline for The Blue Anchor after reading reviews of the Thai food and that they were showing the Rugby.

I was directed here by the landlord of my AirBnb. From the outside the place doesn't look much, but don't let that put you off. The food is the best I've had outside Thailand. The service is excellent too. Also good wine.

We came for dinner, for the second time. Great service- our dietary requirements were taken care of and the food was delicious- great value as well. The chef came out at the end and was very friendly! We will be coming back soon!

2nd visit. First was just for a drink but liked the look of the menu and returned for a Thai meal. Good choices and very tasty and as spicy as declared.

We've been twice for a Thai meal at the Blue Anchor and were delighted both times by the excellent food. I'm amazed that both times it's not been at all busy (foodwise) as it is such good value and so delicious I would have thought the word would have spread by now. We've made a pledge to go more regularly to support them as it's only down the road for us and Portslade businesses need the help more than Brighton or Hove. Should also mention the pub looks very nice inside too with a sort of beachy rustic theme. Staff seem friendly enough. All good and thoroughly recommended!

This pub/restaurant which has been on my doorstep for some years, has been completely refurbished and reinvented. The Thai menu is just lovely, with fresh ingredients and perfectly cooked and presented by a charming Thai cook. It's also excellent value so we go regularly now and so does everyone else it seems because it is invariably busy. It's a difficult demographic in Portslade, it can be a bit rough, but the opening of this pub and another to be opened shortly, has really seen the quality of Boundary road go up and I no longer need to trawl into Hove or Brighton for a night out.

The Blue Anchor was recommended, as my husband and I don't live in the area we took the recommendation and wow!

Had heard that the Thai menu at the Blue Anchor was very good. It took a little convincing to visit the pub as the last time we went to the blue anchor was several years ago and it was quite frankly a hovel.

We went with some freinds to this restaurant; they had been numerous times before and rated the food. The place is a pub with Thai food. The decor is a little strange with an odd mish-mash of items (a couple of juke boxes (neither of which worked), framed album covers, some sea-side type stuff and some retro signs. With that out of the way the food is superb and highly recommended and vegetarians are well catered for; you can mix and match most of the meals so for example if you want a Green Curry you can have it with pork, beef, chicken or tofu or just vegetables etc. There were six of us in our party and all of us had starters and mains and this all came in well under £100. The portions are a good size and the service is superb.
