I'm so glad the pub we were originally going to had stopped serving or we wouldn't have come here and had such amazing food. My boyfriend had the Signature Burger and chips, I had steak pie and mash. Both came piping hot and tasted fantastic and the service throughout was great. Only downside was that we were too full for dessert!!!! Highly recommended, can't wait to go back.

A little disappointed on this occasion. The mains were great but it all fell apart over dessert. We ordered 3 desserts, 2 of which required custard. Apparently they'd run out & only had a very tiny drop left to share between 2. However, this had unfortunately been served in a dirty gravy boat that was still covered in gravy around the top!! Once this was pointed out though the staff were very apologetic and didn't charge for the desserts. An unfortunate thing to happen but they were hugely busy and run off their feet. We will return and would still recommend.

We had quite low expectations as it was the only place we could find that was open on a Monday evening. However we were really pleasantly surprised. The whole meal was really good value for money.

Visited The Blacksmiths with high hopes, but was sorely disappointed. The meal was served cold, and there was an unsettling number of flies around our table. I'd expect a much higher standard of cleanliness and food quality for a place with such good reviews. I hope they address these issues soon.

Revisited the blacksmith arms again after 1yr in hope there was an improvement, sadly not the case. The actual building looks very tired and run down, garden furniture extremely shabby! Some improvement with the food. Such a shame as in a lovely village , I am sure just a lick of paint would make it more enticing

Try and take advantage of some of our local businesses who are doing special promotions during January 2023. Our first stop was to go down to the lovely, quiet village of Llan maes and visit one of our favourite pubs, off the grid, in the middle of a little village which is the equivalent to a Welsh Midsomer Murders. Their promotion for January is two meals for £14. We arrived to a pub that actually was warm and considering it was a Thursday, had quite a few tables filled. The menus presented with straight away had foods that we would choose on a normal menu. Nice variety. Hubby opted for the sausage and mash (our first date meal and also our wedding meal). He was extremely pleased with the fantastic size on the sausages, creamy mash and tasty gravy. Unusually for me, I really fancied trying the gammon. I asked for it to have the pineapple and the egg which they were really happy to do. The gammon was absolutely gorgeous and not too salted, the egg was golden and tasted gorgeous and the grilled pineapple just set it all off. Could highly recommend if you fancy a little trip down the Vale just short of 9 miles out of Barry.

My Australian-based brother and his wife were visiting the area following attending the 75th anniversary of Arnhem, the abortive airborne assault known as "Market Garden". He asked all his family here to join him at this very well known eating pub, before his return from Cardiff Rhoose airport. The party made up of impatient, boisterous childern and resigned adults were delighted at the reception we had, the large room all alid up for us and the quality of the food served. So fair does, well done. Oh, and the draught ales on tap were a treat too.

I visited the Blacksmiths for Sunday Lunch with my husband daughter and grandaughter. We ordered 3Turkey dinners I was shocked when the dinners came you had 2 small slices of Turkey 2 very small roast potatoes and 1 small new potatoe, with a small bowl of vegetables. I never order sweet but we were all still hungry and had to order a sweet which was shop bought pancakes with strawberrys and a couple of blueberries on. Thw main dinner cost £9 which was a lot for the amount of food. There was a lot of pensioners there proberly because they only eat small dinners. If your a big man with a good appetite this would be like a starter for you.

I hadn't heard good reviews about this place, our friends had booked the table so we went with them to give it a try. There was no record of our table booking to start with.We sat at the front ,nice table ,lovely cosy little pub.The Calamari starter was awful ,was supposed to come with a piri piri sauce and a lemon wedge. As you can see from the picture I posted ,poor presentation, plain mayonnaise and no lemon,we had to ask for the waiter for the piri sauce and the lemon. Then we ordered the prawn linguine main ,nothing like the menu description,as you can see from the pictures ,just over cooked pasta in a cheap tomato sauce. Our friend returned the beef rib which was small and just gristle. So three out of the four mains were returned. We did have a long discussion with the manager he was very understanding. We explained that the meals were a disgusting standard. We walked out hungry.Hope they pick up the standards because this is a nice little pub

This was a first visit since being taken over by new people. We found them to be very friendly, but a few things could have been better. Drinks order take promptly and plenty of time to study menu. Starters came quite quickly, but no cutlery and this took a whole to appear, food in the meantime cooling, I had a prawn cocktail with the unusual combination of toast which was rather burnt, prawn cocktail was ok, but no cucumber or tomato. I then had a Barnsley chop, cooked to perfection and husband had am steak which was also cooked to his liking. During our meal no one came to ask if everything was ok with the meal, it was busy, so if there had been a problem, would have been a problem getting old of someone. Our biggest complaint was the state of dress of some of the other diners, we were in the top room, there is a bar, there were people in there who looked as if they had just got out of digging a hole, dirty jeans, covered in mud an not looking clean at all, not a good idea in a dining area, this would make me reluctant to return , as we are not snobs, but we do not want to spend our evening with people in dirty clothes , in my option the bar is the place for work clothes, if at all

Booked a table, but when arriving the bar staff unsure as to what table so told to sit anywhere. Waited 15 mins for order to be taken, 45 mins for food, it was not that busy, with three waiting staff. 'Roast dinner with all the trimmings' two courses for £11.95 turned out to be either turkey or beef. Beef was a boil in the bag portion, yorkshires burnt, 1 potato cut in half not cooked long enough was the roast potatoes, 3 small boiled potatoes, 1 half of a parsnip, 1 sprig of broccoli, a few small carrots and about 15 peas. We had to share a very small tub of veg between us. And a quick apology for the delay when the food arrived. The 'warm' choc and orange pudding was cold. Service was slow. The fire wasn't lit. I was cold the whole time in there and people had kids running around climbing on the chairs of tables where people were trying to eat. Football on two screens. Staff didn't have hair tied up when serving. No goodbyes or Thank you when we paid or when we left. Not impressed for the price, sorry Blacksmiths.

We booked as a family of five for Sunday lunch as a treat for my elderly father in law. Wasn't particularly busy and we had booked in advance. Firstly, our names were't reserved and we were given a table at the front of house where it was noisy. I asked to be moved and the waiting staff moved us to the back of restaurant. Even better as quieter. But then, we were left! Ignored by the waiting staff and we constantly had to ask to be served. And we are a patient, accepting and non complaining family! The food was very basic and my vegetarian nut roast tasted like it was microwaved. It tasted more like a fried nut burger. The portions for the beef and vegetables were reasonable. We waited so long for the plates to be taken away we eventually looked for a waiting staff and called them over. Again, more waiting (very patiently) for the dessert menu and empty drinks glasses left on the table. It was dreadful. The waiting staff kept looking over and appeared to want to talk to each other/ ignore us. I could understand if the place was busy but it wasn't. I was disappointed as this could be a wonderful place. The restaurant area is comfortable and surroundings are very pleasant. Whilst the food is basic, it could be a great place for family Sunday lunch. I would be very reluctant to visit again with family or friends. The waiting staff really let us down on this visit sadly. There are so many other places in the Vale that offer better service than the Blacksmiths Arms.

Food was good. Friends had the smothered chicken and shepherds pie, I had a bowl of chips. Mine was enjoyable but both friends commented it was something they could have made at home but they enjoyed it and found it tasty, I think perhaps the presentation was lacking here. The pub is in a village location and has recently changed hands and has been spruced up. It has a nice atmosphere and the staff are friendly and helpful. We wanted to attend the quiz night which they have every Wednesday at 8.00, it is £1.50 each person, the proceeds of which go to local charities. We thought we would have a meal first so we arrived at 7.00, the lady behind the bar said it would be a 10 minute delay for food (we hadn't booked) we said that was ok. Unfortunately it was about an hour before we received the food, which meant we had to eat and do the quiz at the same time. The food when it did arrive was disappointing, I and a friend ordered the pies, they were individual pies but nothing like the description and the chips were overcooked, in this area we have a lot of very good pubs with great food, they will need to improve. We enjoyed the quiz night a lot and will definitely go back but not to eat, such a shame.

We arrived on time and we're shown to our table. Around 1.20pm we had ordered our food and were told there maybe a little delay as there was a table of 20 in. By 2pm we still hadn't had any food and so I requested that the children's meals were brought out with the starters. Around 2.10pm the starters came minus the children's meals. After asking again the children got their meat and potatoes and Yorkshire pudding but no gravy or veg. Another 5 minutes later the gravy was brought out but had been taken straight from the fridge and not warmed up. Another 5 minutes later they got their veg. The starters we had were nice but a little cold but we were so hungry at this point we daren't send them back. By 3pm we had still not had our main courses, some of our party had not had starters and so not eaten anything by this point. We had noted that there were at least three tables who had come in after us but had been served their mains before us. At this point we complained to the manager James who apologised and stated the kitchen was very busy. Around 3.15pm we were approached by the waitress who informed that there was only one lamb left when four of us had ordered lamb. This was as the other mains were finally being brought to the table. Dismayed that we were being told at this late stage that we could not have what we had ordered we called the manager over and stated that we would be leaving. James cancelled the food bill and agreed the level of service had not been up to standard. We had purchased our drinks with cash at the bar. I requested a refund for the drinks my point being we were there for a meal that they could not supply and we would not have just attended for drinks. James stated that he could not give me the refund and that he would have to go through his area manager. I left James my details and was informed that the area manager should be in touch by Tuesday. Today is Thursday and still no contact from anyone at the premises. It is a real shame that the service was so poor. The little food that we did have although slightly cold was nice. We could understand having to wait a while if we had not booked a table but to have booked a table and to not have had main meals 2 hours after ordering is not acceptable. Even more disappointing was when we could see people who had ordered food after us eating their dinners before us.Had the area manager got back to us agreeing a refund for the drinks I was going to ask them to make a donation to Cancer research, however, I have been unable to as they have failed to contact me.

It's great that this our local pub is open again and attracting back custom. The staff are very friendly and the decorative makeover is very smart. The atmosphere of a friendly village local is returning. The two things currently lacking are the range of guest ales which are just big chain beers Greene King or Brains and the food which is distinctly average for the price bracket. I understand that they are trying to build the business but I fear that there are other local pubs currently with better food and the initial interest people may have in the pub may well wane. My personal view is that they need some specials on the menu and some independent guest ales to keep the interest going

The Blacksmith's Arms is a pleasant enough country pub with a good selection of draught beers. My wife and i had looked forward to re-visiting this pub after an absence of several years. At our visit last night it was certainly very busy. It took about 20 minutes to take our order and that was acceptable as we wanted to settle down and have our drinks. The single waitress was completely overwhelmed in taking orders, serving at the bar and delivering meals at table. To state the obvious the Pub was greatly understaffed. Our order was twice incorrectly served to our table and we had determined that after waiting nearly 50 minutes after ordering and non appearance of our meal, we would leave. However, on the point of departure, our meal was served. It was not well presented with seasonal vegetables being carrots and broccili served with a floppy based chicken and ham pie. ( I always think that carrots shows an unimaginative choice of vegetables even given that this is a pub meal)! Sorry! However, the Chef courteously apologised for the delay and the meal was hot and passable but that is the best I can say. We also noted that a large (non guide) dog was allowed into the restaurant. This may be fine for dog owners ( and I suspect the canine lovers will be baring their teeth that anyone should criticise such behaviour), I find it quite offensive and completely unhygenic given that there is no separate bar. I cannot say that the experience was anything but average and though we had not visited the Blacksmith's Arms for some years, unfortunately, it will be some considerable time before I risk culinary delights here in the near future.

I've moved to the area 2 months ago, one of the attractions being a nice pub in the village, and now very happy to see it get a new lease of life after re-opening. For me, key things are 3 cask ales, a great choice of bottled beers and wines ... And a real community feel especially at weekends. Really hoping it will be a success.

This was our local until it closed. We returned when it was taken over this December and was very impressed how it had returned to atypical village pub. We were made very welcome and enjoyed a drink chatting to staff, customers from Llanmaes and the Landlord.Sunday, we returned having booked lunch. It was delicious with plenty of meat, fresh vegetables and plenty of it. We passed on the dessert as my wife is dairy intolerant, however the Chef came over and discussed her requirements for our next visit.I give The Blacksmiths top marks and hope to return several times to enjoy the log fire, locals chatting, dogs to make a fuss of and enjoy a typical village pub atmosphere. What an improvement. Next visit Wednesdays pub quiz night....................

Started with waitress forgetting my drink twice and had to go to the barman to get it. Garlic mushrooms arrived in a cast iron frying pan which you would expect to be hot but it was so cold i could hold it in my hand and i had to send it back. Roast beef dinner arrived carried by the waitress with towel as if the plates were hot. The plates were cold as if they had been kept in the fridge so the meal lost its temperature too quickly. The beef was very dry and stuck to your mouth making it difficult to swallow. Overall this was one of the worst meals i have had in a long time. Unless things improve i would not recommend this place.

No food at present as the pub requires new tenants or managers. Nothing likely to change in near future.

Difficult to say at the moment. Usually a great local, with lots going on. New owners are still work in progress. No food as yet, but wait and see. Hopefully it will live up to its reputation....

I don't like giving a poor review but have no option as there was no food on offer. The website needs updating so it is clear when food is available.

24.07.2016 - 6 of us went last minute for Sunday lunch. Lunch was tasty, beef was cooked really well and so much of it! Served with roast parsnips, potatoes, roast potatoes, carrots, red cabbage, green beans and swede - phew. Gravy was a bit 'gloopy' but it was ok. New owners were very pleasant and efficient. Desserts were lovely - I had a rumpy lumpy? - delicious. The only downside the menu was on the blackboard - not a problem but no prices?? When the bill was brought - not bad at all- 6 adults all with 2 courses and drinks - just on £100. - well worth a visit

I've previously given this pub a very good review, and it was one of my favourite places to eat. However, yesterday, we drove from Penarth to the area with the sole purpose of having a birthday meal at the pub. I checked on the internet first, and there were no comments or warnings. When we got there, the car park was uncharacteristically empty, and there were only about nine patrons in toto. The barman informed us that the restaurant was shut, and would be so until Sunday at the earliest (yes, it was very vague). We repaired to the equally-excellent Blue Anchor instead. But surely they could have updated the internet page? The last time we visited, we gathered that it had changed hands and that the chef was leaving, so perhaps they have decided to change the previously-winning formula, and substitute something boringly similar to many other pubs. Now we have to start hunting for new pubs, I suppose.

Called in on a Friday night quite early so the bar was fairly busy but we got served quickly and were shown where we could sit to eat. We ordered our meals and the food turned up quickly the Starter was a sharing platter for 3 and it was huge all homemade. We then had our mains after a short wait 3 different meals and all very good and the chips homemade hand cut very good nicely salted and my steak was cooked just how i like it and it was a very good quality. The beer was also very good and seemed to be well cared for so this is not just a pub for food they also cater for people who like beer. Had not been to the Blacksmiths for a few years so this was a very good visit will go again when in the area again

I've been here many times in the past and only a few times since the new owners have taken hold. It does seem to lack some atmosphere but I still enjoy having a drink or two in front of the open fire. There is rather a lot on the menu and as some have said, it's not always available. Maybe reduce what you have and make it available and better quality. We have eaten on steak night, it was tasty and good value for money. I've also eaten here with my daughter and when she couldn't finish her curry they packed it up for her to bring home. The staff seem friendly enough and there is a good choice of ales and wines. Looking forward to the summer festival which I always enjoy.

After our last visit some months ago which was not good, decided to give the pub another try. Shouldn't have bothered. No atmosphere, no welcome from staff. Should have asked what wasn't on the menu rather than what was. Very limited choice for lunch and not brilliant when food did arrive.Such a shame as this was once a great pub with friendly staff and good food.

Food is of a high quality in a rustic pub adjoining the building that used to house the blacksmiths shop. A friendly welcome and a good bar add to the dining experience.

This is now our local and as others have noted, was taken over in the summer by new owners. My boyfriend says the beer is very good and we noticed that they are now selling Tyrells crisps, which are better than your average Walkers, but disappointingly the food is less than average. We went last week on curry night. To give them credit there were only meat curries available and they offered to make me a veggie one as I don't eat meat. Before the curry arrived, something called a 'platter' came. This was two onion bhajis, two vegetable samosas, all obviously out of a packet. There was a naan bread (again out of a packet) and a poppadum. There was mango chutney, loads of it and then raita, which appeared to be mint sauce mixed with some yogurt. When the curries came they were enormous and accompanied by rice and chips, although I had asked just to have rice. My feeling was that the curry sauces were out of a jar. As I said, there was an enormous amount of food and at least twice as much as each person could eat. I commented to the waitress that this didn't seem to make sense at all as they would end up throwing more than half of it away and any customers would definitely be too full for dessert, thereby losing them money. She said that it is just the way things are there. I would have happily paid the same price for half the food, but freshly made rather than out of packets and jars. We would love to support our local pub more by going there regularly for food, but unless the quality improves, and we don't expect cordon bleu, just freshly made good food, then I think that our visits will be few and far between.

I stopped in to the Blacksmiths Arms with a friend on a Friday night. It is a little walk outside Llantwit Major so I had expected more of a local feel, but the atmosphere was a little lacking. There is a decent range of beer and we may have just found it on a quiet Friday. The menu also looked a little ordinary but I could not comment on the food itself. However, I would still rate it as very good because it was a decent place to stop and have a pint.
