The Black Swan in Wiltshire

Had some good food in this authentic and cosy pub restaurant while visiting Devizes on a glorious autumn day. Lovely interior, classy but unpretentious, and pleasant, attentive service. Would certainly eat here again when we next visit this attractive and historic Wiltshire town.

Really, really good. I have just had a couple of drinks and a snack of padron peppers. Excellent - just as good as I often have in Spain, and very reasonably priced. Also, very friendly and attentive service from the two girls behind the bar.

We visited with friends as they had been previously and had a good experience. We were seated at 7.30pm, but had to chase to get a drink after 20 minutes. We ordered starter and main course each and the starter arrived at around 8.30pm. At 9.30 we eventually got the main courses. The waitress was very apologetic and said a table of 25 and a table of 10 had caused the backlog in the kitchen and suggested a discount for the inconvenience. I don’t imagine that a table of 25 and 10 just rocked up unexpectedly, so the delays caused are simply poor management. You shouldn’t take as many bookings if you can’t manage them. The food when it did arrive was very good and we did have some drinks knocked off the bill. However, I would have preferred to pay in full and not have to wait two hours for the meal.

I visited The Black Swan Inn on Saturday 5th Oct - firstly arranged for a birthday meal for my husband. Then decided to book a room so we could drink and enjoy the evening without having to rush home. I had already heard from the "Devizes jungle drums" that it was the best place to eat by many locals, I was not disappointed, what was a lovely surprise was the quality of the rooms. We had a cosy double looking over the market square. A cosy, airy room with a lovely "rainforest " shower! Quality bedding, towels, tea making facilities and tastefully decorated! A quirky but lovely room:) Our meals were gorgeous, quality produce cooked to a high standard. A good price range and well worth every penny! Staff friendly and helpful. Bar area is rustic and true to its roots! Breakfast was superb and I would definitely recommend. I went direct to the Black Swan to make my booking rather than them losing part of it to a "well known site"! They have a 48 hour cancellation policy which is fair and reasonable. They should be very proud of their business. And they use ALL LOCAL PRODUCE where possible. Definitely go again :)

Visited early evening for a meal. Welcoming and helpful staff. Meal was excellent, with good service. Not been here before, but will definitely eat here again, recommended..It was quite busy for a Monday evening, which is not surprising, with the quality of the food.

Absolutely love this place. The staff are friendly and the pub/hotel is amazing. We arrived late yesterday and nothing was too much trouble. We had to bring our dog at the last minute. We couldn’t have been more welcomed. Ruby, our small Yorkshire Terrier, loved sitting with us at the breakfast table and insisted on perusing the breakfast menu herself. The food and drink is superb. I thoroughly recommend.

We had a couple of visits to The Black Swan whilst having a week on the Kennet & Avon Canal. Lovely pub/restaurant. Good choice of beers and the food was excellent

Lovely place to stay ...lovely food, room very clean & tidy...staff lovely & friendly...we were going to a wedding at 2.30pm they kindly ensured our room was ready at 12 noon so we could get ready & have showers etc ... would definitely stay again.....

The food was exceptional. We’d walked to Rowde expecting to eat there but the kitchen was closed. Disappointed we returned to Devizes where we received exceptional service and food. My Sausage with Beetroot was a match made in heaven. I could have done with more than 3 x stiny spuds, but each was a delight. My wife had the chicken schnitzel with hash brown and chorizo beans. Whilst the wine was expensive it was a cut above the usual “pub wine”, my 6X was tired, but not “off”. The Service was responsive, importantly we were not called “guys”, I hate that. She had a sense of humour and winning smile, my tiny bowl of English Mustard delivered as if it were a starter.

Came up as one of top ten restaurants with vegan dishes on the menu. But we found it seriously lacking on this front. They offered to make their vegetarian dishes vegan by removing components. Even then there was very little choice. In the end four of us looking for a vegan dinner ended up with a few side dishes and a couple of starters. The only available dish was a risotto. So, to say vegan options available is a bit of a stretch. This veganism is a thing guys and there are more and more of us out here. You would do well to have a few genuine vegan dishes on the menu. We’d have spent a lot more. What we did have was hot and tasty but not a coherent meal. I was also annoyed that our drinks were added to the table order and we were charged 12.5% “optional service charge” on the drinks as well as food. That’s a major no, no in my book.

We enjoyed our evening meal here. We are local but hadn’t been to the Black Swan for a little while - it has been nicely updated and improved since we were last here. The food wasn’t cheap but it really was excellent. They had a small menu and explained that it doesn’t change that much so I’m not sure how often we’ll revisit but we will definitely be back. The service was excellent - the staff have obviously been well trained and we felt welcomed and well treated. We were sat at the back and we thought it may be a bit secluded but there was a large party in that area too and a couple of other smaller tables so the atmosphere was good (although it was a little noisy - luckily the large group were not particularly loud).

Not a great experience. Waited for over 15 mins for drinks once ordered. Further drinks order was forgotten. My burger was raw so I couldn't eat it. Not what you expect for £19.50! When handed back to waitress at the end they deducted the cost of the burger but still charged £7 for the chips... very petty. At no point during the meal were we asked if our meals were ok where this could have been rectified. Such a shame, we had a great meal here about a year ago. Not sure what has happened but won't be rushing back.

Staff were excellent setting is beautiful and the food is the best. My wife is a vegetarian chef and has owned restaurants in Covent garden as well as locally for the past 30 years. She has said this is the best vegetarian meal she has ever had out. My fish was perfectly cooked and a combination of flavours was excellent. Can’t wait to go back again, just wish it was closer. Worth the visit for the Chick pea chips alone!!

Fabulous Christmas Eve lunch Managed to get the the only table available in the bar area on Christmas Eve. We were visiting the area for Christmas, had nowhere to eat on Christmas eve and we’re beginning to panic. Thank goodness we found this place having walked from our campsite in Seend. The staff were so attentive, the atmosphere was great and the food was Amazing. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, we had a three course meal that was outstanding. It made our Christmas, so thank you to the staff!

Very limited choice of vegetarian & vegan options, actually only 2 😞 I absolutely refused to pay £18 for the "veggie" risotto, couldn't have as the Italian cheese WASN'T vegetarian 😤So had the falafel & halloumi burger instead. Definitely not worth £9.50, very stingy on the halloumi & very bland. Sorry but won't be returning in a hurry ....... ....

A very good dining experience in a historical coaching Inn in the heart of a quintessential Wiltshire Market town. The Black Swan offers fantastic food and attentive service and is the best place in Devizes for a gastro pub dining experience. There is a good selection of beers and spirits, and their service always comes with a smile. Certainly worth a visit if you're in the area!

We cannot praise this place highly enough! They are consistently good - the food, atmosphere and service are always superb. The flavours and food combinations are amazing. You will not be disappointed. Keep doing what you are doing Black Swan! 😀

Lovely place. We stayed in a cosy double which was a very comfortable room. Great food. Really good choice of wine. We stayed for one night and had a lovely time. The service was outstanding. Evening meal was lovely & breakfast was one of the nicest I’ve had. The only small thing I would say is a little more attention to detail on the cleaning in the room & bathroom is needed (bit dusty in some places). We will definitely be back.

Stayed for one night, had dinner and breakfast. We are fairly local to the town and rate The Black Swan Inn very highly indeed. The owners (one of whom is the chef) are friendly, welcoming and really sweet and they should be proud of what they've done with this historic, atomospheric inn, located centrally in the heart of beautiful Devizes. We had a wonderful, reasonably-priced dinner in the tastefully finished, discretely laid out dining room (the Crispy Feta, Fig, Salsa Verde starter / nibble is a mini-masterpiece) and stayed in a gorgeous, well-appointed room for one night. We also enjoyed a classy full-English breakfast in the morning. The pub itself is the perfect place to relax and have a drink, whether you want a cosy, traditonal fireside atmosphere inside, or enjoy the charming, coach-house cobbles outside, the whole establishment is perfectly pitched. So pleased to have The Black Swan Inn local to us.

Couldn’t get an answer from this pub on the phone despite several attempts, so eventually emailed requesting a Monday lunchtime table, explaining it was my mother’s 95TH BIRTHDAY & to request a cake or similar. I received an automated confirmation of booking. Arrived at bar to check in. There was one other table in. Manager, bending over doing something waved at tables without stopping and said our table was “over there”. No smile, no welcome. She didn’t bother taking us to the table, which wasn’t even laid-up so indistinguishable from the rest despite us booking. Food was quite good but very expensive for what it was (tiny piece of pollock on cannellini beans (menu said butter beans) with no accompaniments £24. Fat chips extra £4.50 for max about 8). At end of meal nothing whatsoever was done for my mother’s birthday. I asked manager what happened. She replied she’d emailed me (she did on Sunday evening so I hadn’t seen it) saying that they “couldn’t do a cake or anything but would put candle in whatever desert was ordered”. I said what happened to the candle then? She said “they’d run out”. So they did absolutely nothing for a 95th birthday. Even though they’re situated in the market place amidst all the shops. Manager just couldn’t be bothered. About anything. Massively anticlimactic birthday treat @£178+ for four mains and four ice cream sundaes, one bottle Prosecco and a couple of beers & a coke. Go elsewhere if you want fun & celebration. Don’t bring your loved ones here for a treat because they won’t get one. Kind mother left £10 tip with manager which was hugely undeserved. Hope it all went to the young waitress who was helpful.

Right on the market square, and proably very busy on market days. Quite large inside, all tables, with some outside for when the weather is less than horrible. Not the cheapest place, but it promotes itself as a gastropub, so I suppose it is to be expected. We had the chuck/short rib beef burger (quite rare for a burger but very tasty), haddock (pretty good) and currywurst hotdog (not actually as traditionally served in Germany, but it still tasted good). They had no fries due to being sold out after a long weekend, but their chips were well cooked and tasty. Location and setting is nice, and a fair number of people came it, so it seems pretty popular. Staff are friendly and helpful. Worth another visit.

Visiting Devizes and Caen Hill locks with friends, the Black Swan was recommended for lunch. Very friendly and attentive staff, the food was well cooked and tasty, a burger is not normally my first choice but, it was probably the best burger I have tasted.

We went for an impromptu meal out child free. The food and service were nothing short of exemplary. I had the HSTLR burger, the loaded fries with Korean Mayo was just to die for, my wife had Pea Mint and Spinach risotto which was apparently delicious. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned, so nice to find somewhere in our home town so competent and capable of delivering an elevated pub fayre with a fine dining level of care given to taste and textures. Would highly recommend.

As usual, we were visiting family in Devizes. Stayed here on Saturday night. Very comfortable en suite double room. The tea and coffee making facilities included a cafetière and fresh coffee - I really appreciated that and haven’t had that before. On the first floor there is a fridge for guests containing fresh milk and bottled water. It was a peaceful night’s sleep, very comfortable bed. There is a decent sized public car park outside. The breakfast was amazing! The food was good quality and cooked perfectly, really tasty. Generous pot of coffee (again, I love the coffee). We didn’t stay there for dinner as we were visiting family. The pub was very cosy - especially when we were there for breakfast; peaceful. Check in was a bit messy. Don’t bother pushing the bell for check in - just go straight to the bar and catch the eye of someone and you’ll get your key. Mind your head as you go up the stairs.

We went to the Black Swan in Devizes on recommendation and was not disappointed. The food was great not your usual pub fayre. The place was buzzing inside and out. We are lucky to have this in Devizes.

I visited here a few weekends ago and was met with a warm welcome from the staff, arriving after 9pm. The bar was busy but very friendly.The room was above expected, clean and very quiet.Breakfast was worth getting up for the Eggs Royal one of the best. I also enjoyed a very pleasant lunch on the Saturday which shows the standard of the food is consistent.On departing the staff could not have been more friendly and sincere.A real gem I’ll look forward to returning to.....

I've eaten here several times and the food is always exceptional, the portions generous and the staff are always super lovely (with the added advantage of being dog friendly!) Especially love the deli grazing boards, i can't wait to try their Sunday lunch!

夕食後、ぷらっと立ち寄ってみました。店内の雰囲気はシックで良い感じでしたが、客層は地元の人が中心のようで、アジア系が珍しいのか、面と向かってではありませんでしたが、差別的な発言をする人もいたので、一杯だけ飲んで退散しました。もちろんお店の人は、そのようなことはありませんでした。

Saturday evening, about 7pm, the bar was not busy. I had scampi, chips and peas. The scampi was burnt, the chips were overcooked and flaccid and the peas had some sort of awful dressing on them. My partner had the burgers - two tiny thin burgers, burnt, the same flaccid chips and a small pot of something cremated - we could not decide whether it was supposed to be onions or mushrooms - in either case inedible. We're British so we didn't complain but were astonished to see how popular the pub became as we sat there.

Superb service and quality of the food in taste, presentation and service. The portions are fit for a Henry VIII appetite so arrive hungry and leave full. Highly recommend the roast chicken!

We called in for two ploughman's, we were told that they stopped serving at eight pm, i checked the time on my I phone it was 20.01. Other people were eating main courses in the bar i hope they did not want a desert.Obviously do not need the trade

We visited Sunday lunch time. First impressions what a great place.Nice big dinning area,It was not very busy for a Sunday and was told waiting time was about 25 minutes for food. After 40 mins young man come and said sorry for the delay the chef was cooking ours now and would be 10 mins After waiting a further 15 min our food arrived. I had the ring sausage and my wife had roast beef.My meal was pretty non descript.My wife's meal looked very good and the portion was big.we both ate the meals and agreed the best thing was the horse radish sauce.With a pint of ale and a coffee the cost was £32.With the size of dinning area and it being halve empty we didn't expect to wait 65 mins.Staff were friendly and the decor nice.

After just having just a drink earlier in the week and seeing the lovely plates of food being served, we decided to try out the menu ourselves. A really good menu with lots of choice for a vegetarian and a separate menu for gluten free which also had a lot of choice.I ordered gluten free fish and chips which although surprised it had no batter was perfectly cooked and with the calories saved could have dessert!Burger sliders were apparently superb, as was the meatless burger. My husband had the fish and chips with gluten which were also very good.Desserts are only £2.50 and you can have 3 taster ( generous helpings)desserts for £6.95.Very friendly staff and we will definitely be back

The Black Swan is a beautiful building with lots of potential. It used to be great, whilst John, Amelia and company were at the steering wheel. I actually did a part time job as pot wash/porter for a while, which I enjoyed. It was even welcoming and friendly when taken over by the lovely people, Jack and company who once interviewed me for the Senior House Keeping role.

Highly recommended the Black Swan in the devizes market place for a delicious Sunday lunch. Me and my daughter left stuffed and it was all so tasty. Spitroast chicken either half or whole, tons of veg, gravy and Yorkshire's served on a board. Looks and Tastes delicious. Left feeling stuffed. Thanks Chef Chrissie and her team. Warm welcome from the front of house team as well.

Only popped in for drinks. Town centre pub with mostly locals. All happy to chat and friendly. An old building with a rustic feel. Reasonable pricing.

We often drop in for an Americano and the current set-up (after a bit of chaos during the change of management) seems pleasant and efficient. Last time we ate (fish & chips deal) was very nice; a friend's risotto was swimming in oil which didn't impress.

We were staying in the rooms above and decided to eat there too.

Good service, easy to obtain a table.
