We arrived to check in after a long weary drive to find the door locked a local then told me that the landlord is in prison for fraud it would have been polite to inform me of the situation, and not waste my time and effort

Great hotel the staff are friendly and helpful. The food was excellent will definitely go back there again

Family of eight sat in the beer garden, when we arrived kitchen staff having a fag break there wasn’t the best start. Ordered our meals, Childs burger was the only meal that was ok, everything was over cooked and burnt. Childrens meals arrived last, fish fingers were cremated and not edible, one adult burger was gluten free, they came an apologised after bringing two meals out that they had no gluten free baps the burger was black /burnt. The lasagne had chunks of solid béchamel in it and was tasteless. No staff came to ask if everything was ok. We waited for them to come and clear the plates so they could see but gave up in the end.

Went for a meal and the service and food were great, until the staff had a break, I was appalled at the foul language used by the staff, and smoking by them whilst we were eating. And they carried on with their loud vocal swearing when another family where there with a young child.

We're an American couple traveling by narrowboat, and after what seems like a few hundred ham and cheese sandwiches,we had a great dinner tonight. Highly recommend the sirloin. Friendly, cozy place that was perfect for a nice evening.

Visited twice in a week and had two lovely meals. Recommend the burgers and the steak pie. Good prices for food and drinks are at a really good price (and good choice) for a hotel.

It's a while since we last ate at The Black Lion and it will be an even longer time before we return. Calling for lunch we were told there would be a ten minute wait. Ten minutes? It was forty and there was only one other table being served in the dining room. We selected our meals. My husband chose from the vegetarian menu and received cold vegetables, and when he asked where the new potatoes were (he'd been given a dollop of mashed potatoes) was told they'd run out! My meal of tasteless scampi and seriously over cooked chips arrived looking brown and extremely unappetising - there were no peas, they'd run out. There was no offer of a substitute and I suspect the overcooked chips could have been from the previous day. As the hotel is in a central position in the town and has the first restaurant encountered from the wharf this poor service and food lets the hotel down badly. Such a pity.

Had a great time, the food was good and there was a good selection of beers. Really lovely old building. Will come again.

We came here for some food and to watch the football whilst we were staying in a near by lodge. We had booked for 5pm. When we got there the gentleman at the bar said sit where you want but there is a function in the back. We sat in “the snug” which was lovely and cosy and abit out of the way. The bar man then came over with menus and said someone will be over to take your over after 5pm when the chef says so. When the food came it was lovely - my husband had the pie which was absolutely filled to the brim with tender pieces of steak. We didn’t get asked if we would like another drink or desert we were just left alone - abit like we were forgotten about. Then after we paid for the food at the bar we asked if the football was on - which it was in the sport bar but as it was so small it was full up. As we then moved to the other section of the bar the lady serving said I’ll be with you soon and then continued serving someone else - I then heard her say to someone else “what do they want stood there”. We didn’t feel very welcomed there to be honest - definitely felt like it was a place for regulars. The food was lovely but I don’t think we would go back again

Absolutely fantastic little place. Staff are all chatty and welcoming. Prices are great. Food was good (we had a Limited menu which was still great) heard the chef is very young and training so gave the benefit of the doubt but all was fantastic. Came back three times whilst staying here for a few days just for drinks as it was cosy and welcoming.

Booked for Sunday lunch, what a mistake! Soup was cold to start with! If you were blind folded you could have been eating anything... Bland and tasteless main course. Didn't stop for pudding!!

My friend and I visited on two occasions during our recent trip on the Llangollen Canal. I had been there previously and was pleased that it was as I remembered apart from various additions due to Covid etc. The food was first-class and served by pleasant staff and the beers we chose were in top order.

Had a great meal here during a recent canal holiday. They accommodated a group of 7 people and 3 dogs fantastically. Highly recommend the Bombadier pie. Cannot fault the service and value for money

Whilst the pub was initially really busy, the staff did their very best to accommodate four of us, and our dog. The food we ordered was great : fish dishes, curry, gammon all cooked perfectly. Nice deserts too. Above all that was the outstanding service and courtesy of our server for the evening. After dining it was a pleasant walk back to our moored canal boat.

Will not visit again...as a vegan I was astonished to see only one meal available to me on the menu which I think is shocking...no effort made to make something to cater me or to make me feel welcome. Drinks were wrong and a family members lasagne came out cold and had to be reheated.

Lovely beer garden, following all covid rules but still maintained a communiy feel. Sunday lunch was EXCELLENT, served by young staff with the professionalism of a mature peerage. We mostly enjoyed the food being served piping hot even though the outside temperature was fairly cool. Well done to all.

What can I say, this place is fantastic. We regularly visit and can say have never felt more welcome. The owners Mark and Chris plus staff are brilliant. The food is always lovely and the welcome amazing. The team cannot do enough to welcome you whether it’s in the garden, under cover or in the pub. Would highly recommend if you visiting Ellesmere give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

After using the pub on two previous days on our weekend away and booking our table under the warm covered area 2 weeks prior, we arrived and had been moved into the garden area on a damp cold table. In the corner. The covered area was filled with locals and our table had been given to a member of staff. Made to feel second class so we drank up and left. The manager did give 50% off our drinks but what an awful way to run a business and treat visitors!!!!f

Fortunately The Black Lion was open for dinner serving on a Monday. Our preferred eatery was closed, but although we were after something other than English style food, the meal at the Lion was very well received. The ambience in the end restaurant area was a little austere, but the food was tasty, and well served by pleasant waitresses. After our meal we moved back to a little sitting room, well furnished in a homely way to enjoy the rest of our wine, before retiring for the night fully satisfied. Very nice, and would recommend this place. Our visit was before the pre-covid rush.

Had wonderful Sunday Lunch earlier in the week. Real home cooking. Friday evening main course just as good but sadly big let down on Dessert. My wife and I both ordered Jam Sponge pudding. Custard and cream. Both came cold with very little custard or cream. Told the waitress who was doing a sterling job, to be told the pot washer does the desserts and the chef was busy. There was only 3 couples in the restaurant. What a Shame. Told the waitress to tell the Chef to do the cooking not the pot washer.

Touring the area and wanted a good value for money hot meal and this place met all the criteria. Pleasant staff and good choice of reasonably priced food. In fact so good we went back 2 days later to find they had 25% OFF Mon/Tue/Wed in September, so very happy with our choice. Would recommend.

Visited for lunch. Lots of choice on the menu & good home cooked main meals. The chips & onion rings were lovely. My friend had the moreish burger & it looked delicious as did the fish & chips with a beautiful light batter. I feel the puddings were a bit disappointing; prepacked / frozen (or at least the lemon meringue I had was). Would return for dinner but not for pudding!

We were viewing properties in the area and wanted a meal so called in here . We were very pleasantly surprised. There was a good selection of home cooking on the menu ,reasonably charged and good sized portions,served in a nicely decorated restaurant. Having now moved to the area,we have visited several times since,including Valentines Day,when also tried out the special menu. It did not disappoint. We had planned to take friends when they visited but lockdown prevented that for the time being. We are now thinking of booking the little private room between the bar and restaurant,for a special occasion . The bar is very popular with a lovely cosy atmosphere.. We certainly hope to visit again regularly in the future. If you want modern state of the arts probably this is not for you,but a good meal reasonably charged in homely surroundings hits the spot perfectly.

Ate here on the deal nights. Loved the menu not too fussy.delicious hot food served on hot plates!! Very polite and smiley young man waiter. My burger with caremalised onion was the best burger ive ever had!!! Sons lamb shank good. Puds nice.Will return again and recommend.

We luckily found this lovely pub by accident as very few businesses were open in Ellesmere due to the covid 19. What a great meal we had, choice is extensive, portions are huge we didn’t manage a pudding, only down side for us was that the vegetables were too ardente for us but would suit others. We lovely the decor, a blast from the past, it’s like sitting in your granny’s house. I bet it’s lovely when the open fire is lit. We were able to use the eat out to help out deal but it would have been really good value without this discount. My mother has already returned for a second meal. Nice meal. We all enjoyed the meals we had. They were not sparkling, but it was good. The service was excellent and attentive. Lovely quirky pub, that we would visit again.

It was our granddaughters birthday and we visited Ellesmere so she could ride her new bike along the mere. We would have gone to the Red Lion but they were fully booked so after a quick look on TA we rang the Black Lion who fitted us in. It’s a welcoming pub and the young waiter was lovely. There was 5 of us and we all ordered different meals, all were very much enjoyed and the portions were very generous, the chips were awesome, I had the steak pie which was lovely. The kitchen closed at 3 so we couldn’t order a desert, we’ll have to return to try one. I would definitely recommend x

We called here for a meal on 18th December 2019 - what a disappointment. First of all the place was very cold, apparently the boiler was being repaired so only portable heaters were being used. Then we ordered our meals and they were a big disappointment. My husband ordered steak, the entire meal looked grim, the chips and onion rings were seriously overcooked, and the steak almost inedible, very stringy with lumps of gristle. We left more than we ate. The server was very pleasant and she did her best.

Fantastic food and would recommend any day! The staff are attentive and can't do enough to please. This was our 1st visit but certainly won't be our last ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Chris runs and owns a very inviting warm and friendly hostelry. Food is good and reasonable as are the drinks. Highly recommended and dog and children friendly.separate sports bar, snug, restaurant and salon.

When we go to Ellesmere its often as not that we are staying just out of town at The Woodlands Park Lodges.I have previously reported lunches had at The Red Lion in Ellesmere, this time however we opted for The Black Lion. A lot of the decision to go to The Black Lion is because it is dog friendly in the bar areas and Rocco our Deerhound Lurcher was with us.I quite like it inside The Black Lion. While much of the building has seen better days it has the ambience of a good old country local.Nothing seemingly corporate, no racks stuffed with far to many menu options, nothing pretentious. Being lunchtime we decided on coffees while we reviewed the menu.I ordered the egg mayo sandwiches served with chips and side salad while my wife ordered the soup of the say with farmhouse bread.I was quite pleased with Rocco. He behaved very well and didn't return the barks the little Jack R was shouting out occasionally at the other end of the bar. He just looked quizzically at the Jack and then went back to sleep. Something Lurchers do very well.I think my sandwiches cost under a fiver and that was two rounds of bread cut into triangles stuffed full of rich filling. The chips alone were a full portion size and they were good chips too. The side salad was nicely arranged as opposed to just being dumped on the plate with geometric pattern of balsamic across it.The farmhouse soup was home-made. Hot, colourful, warm and tasty according to my wife. A generous portion too.Oddly perhaps the bread arrived already buttered. Saved messing with those small butter packs I guess, which when all said and done are the work of the devil when served to cold!The coffee was nice,. The food was well cooked, the bar dog friendly. Overall it felt quite relaxed in The Black Lion.We'll have to call by and have a full meal someday. But until then, deffo worth a visit for the country local experience.

Very busy pub full of drinkers and diners. But staff very friendly and give you good personal attention despit their busyness.Serves good quality pub food with a menu with many choices .Great real ale pub too.Very close to The Mere with lovely walks.

The restaurant is light and airy. The waitress who served us was very professional, polite and efficient. The food choices on the menu is not particularly great, but one of our diners had the fish and chips which was very disappointing. The fish was virtually inedible, rubbery texture and was not eaten. To the restaurant’s credit, it was taken off the bill. Overall, a very enjoyable visit.

13 of us had a lovely family meal here including a handful of infants. Excellent service from waitressing staff.

Had a good Sunday lunch, beef for some, chicken for others. Kids enjoyed their smaller version, although disappointed no Yorkshire with theirs. The only downside was the time it took to arrive, even though it didn't seem too busy. The staff were lovely.

Had an excellent family meal here, great atmosphere, food was fab, hot and well presented and delicious staff were great well done chef!!!

We arrived just before the kitchen was closing for the evening. We chose something quick so as not to delay them going home (that’s how we were made to feel) Reasonably priced and food was ok. We ate quickly and left. Wouldn’t hurry back, sorry.

Stopped off here for lunch with my wife whilst exploring Ellesmere. A large and well presented pub, we ate in the bar area. No difficulty finding a seat and we were greeted in a friendly manner by the staff. There was a fair selection of drinks (some good ales on tap) and bar menu items at reasonable prices. Drinks and meal were all good, and delivered with friendly service.

As a family, we went out for a meal on Friday. Hands down the most beautiful food possible. I had the mozzarella chicken and it was the loveliest I’ve ever had. Such big portions for great value and you really couldn’t fault it. Not a single thing wrong. 5 out of 5 from all 14 of us and would definitely stay again. The staff also all had hearts of gold, gave us everything we needed, happy to help and made sure everything was perfect. Such a welcoming atmosphere from everyone and the new owners. Should be proud of what you’ve achieved there. Definitely would recommend!!

What a wonderful experience. The refurbishment at the Black Lion is quite amazing. I have visited The Black Lion on and off for around 20 years when passing through on my narrow boat. It’s fair to say that over the last few years it had become in need of some TLC! That’s exactly what the place has had, Chris has made such a difference; great to see it busy again. The food and restaurant service are second to none, lots of choice and very generous portions, I had Hunters Chicken. Well worth a visit, recommended 100% - Dave & Joe

Had dinner at the Black Lion last night in a lovely room they call the snug. The food was a long time coming but we were advised that there would be a bit of a wait. We were in no rush but I could understand it being too long for some. We enjoyed the food, especially the brie tart. It was nice to have gluten-free options that were actually tasty.

Went to the Black Lion Hotel for a meal last night and had the worst experience I think I’ve ever had in a restaurant.

Had a great meal with family at the Black Lion. We were all happy with our meals. I was apprehensive about ordering the sea bass as fish is so frequently over-cooked but it was perfect. My nephew had the salmon - also perfectly cooked. The others enjoyed big, juicy burgers and chips that were "the best ever." (Sorry, Le Mont Liban in Nîmes, you move into second place!) At the Black Lion, the reception is warm and generous as is the cuisine. We'll be back!

An evening visit after dropping the boat. A good mix of traditional pub food and some interesting extras.

Came here as a group of three. The service was great and the food was amazing. All 3 of us really enjoyed our meals and said we would definitely go back. The pub looks great too.

Food was very poor, which was disappointing as this hotel was recommended by a neighbour. Will not recommend this place.

We went here for Sunday lunch today!...& it was one of the best I’ve had!....you could tell it was all homemade...the vegetables, beef all beautifully cooked. Will definitely be returning soon!

Visited this on a cold day in early May, it felt as if the hotel put its arms around us and welcomed us in. We lunched in the snug, the beer was good and the food was excellent. The staff were all friendly and attentive and we really didn't want to leave and continue on our canal cruise.

My wife and had lunch here yesterday. Everything was excellent - the friendly welcome, the local cask ale (£3.00 a pint!!), the service and the food (choice, quality, quantity and price)

We visited yesterday evening and were pleasantly surprised. Lovely old pub, full of atmosphere, steak pie to die for. Unbelievable value wine at £10 per bottle. We visited again today for lunch, beautiful freshly cooked fish goujons and my wife had ham and picallilli sandwiches which came with a fresh salad and chips, gorgeous! £4.95 each for lunch! Not to be missed. Dog friendly.

From pretty dire standards the new owners are bringing this historic Inn back to life. (Look at the architecture some of which goes back 550years) This is a friendly local bar with a good selection of real ales at sensible prices, a good restaurant with an innovative menu (cauliflower fritters with cheese fondue, home made Bhajis were a delight) and a substantial Sunday lunch. Some hotel rooms are already in place and more to come. A beer garden is in design and they’ve opened a sports bar at the rear for ‘important matches’. For Ellesmere boaters and visitors, it has my recommendation

Went to meet friends and see the venue and collect menu as we were having a group meal on the Friday.

We were visiting Ellesmere in our Motor Home, and the owner of the campsite recommended this pub. Apparently, it has recently been modernised, and I think has new owners. We were a little worried as some of the past reviews haven't been that good. However, we are glad we went on the owners recommendation. Starters of Black Pudding bites were lovely, and our main courses of Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas were beautifully cooked. The waitresses were attentive, helpful and pleasant. I suppose the only reason I haven't given it 5 stars, is they only served one local beer, and I would have liked to see more local choice on the bar. Still would recommend for food

Had lunch here with a friend last week as the chef hadn't turned up where we were originally going.

Have enjoyed several meals and visits to The Black Lion in recent months and not been disappointed. Love what is being done to restore this beautiful old building to it's true character. We especially love the choice of different areas to sit, the warmth of a real fire and the interesting decor. Meal with family last evening was excellent, superb mixed grills, delicious lamb and perfect lasagne (the veg lasagne is very tasty). Good homemade chips, first class salad and fresh seasonal vegetables. Definitely no complaints.

Visited with our dog, sat in the middle room next to a lovely big fire. Food was fab steak and ale pie. And sausage and mash. One of best pub meals we have had for along time. Prices very reasonable. Would highly recommend. Service was quick and very friendly. Will definately be back and tell all our friends.

Called today for just a lunch snack... we ordered cheese and onion sandwich ....excellent sandwich came with homemade chips and a lovely fresh salad .... Lovely atmosphere in a very warm lounge ....will certainly return ....

My daughter's baby shower was held on Sunday in the upstairs function room. Room has been beautifully decorated, staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. Would highly recommend.

Went for Sunday Lunch with my family walked in and was impressed with decor and bar staff but it went down hill from there! Ordered our meal after over half an hour and all the other tables having had their meals and eaten them I asked the waitress where our meals where. She came back about 5 minutes later with mine and my Aunts meal which what we had was just ok but won’t say they where hotonly just warm ! Then a few minutes later my husband’s came out we actually thought it was a child’s meal ! His comment was they had forgotten me and I have got the scraps! We had seen everything one else’s meals come out and they where a lot better than ours I do think they had forgotten us and just threw ours together we then had to wait another 5 minutes for the sauces etc! Foolishly we ordered desserts mine came out 20 minutes later no sign of the others so I cancelled them and paid. I don’t blame the 2 waitresses as they where rushed off their feet! It was bad organisation! We had driven all the way from the West Midlands to take my Auntie out for lunch won’t be going there again!

What a great way to end a days walking. Everyone in the pub made you feel Welcome. The staff and locals went above and beyond to ensure we were happy. This pub offers a real sense of community spirit and will definitely go back. Really nice genuine people.

I visited the black on 2 occasions over the Christmas and new year period and on both occasions the food was lovely . The first meal was family visiting Ellesmere so went for a drink and some food and we all loved the food and hospitality . The second occasion was again with family on New Year’s Eve , the food was lovely especially the steak and ale pie . Everybody enjoyed their time at the black and I would highly recommend it .

The pub has a lovely atmosphere that is snug, however, the food was very disappointing especially the lasagne which felt like it had been made by someone who had never seen/eaten a lasagne before. Hope this was just a result of a busy Christmas period, but won't be returning.

Came for my daughters 13th birthday meal. Fantastic staff and fantastic food that was value for money. Have recommended to several friends who have also come away very happy. Lovely to see this pub and hotel beautifully renovated and serving such good food.

Just a short walk from our narrow boat overnight mooring, we had our evening meal at the Black Lion. The bar and restaurant area is welcoming and smart & the staff were extremely friendly and helpful - a good first impression which continued throughout our visit.

I would highly recommend a visit to this hotel, the roast dinner was excellent, so much food, choice of 4 meats, fresh vegetables, roast potato’s and mashed potato’s, home made Yorkshire pudding and stuffing, it was very tasty and excellent value for money. Easy to get to from the canal 5 minute walk from the wharf. The landlord and staff were very friendly and the locals also made us feel very welcome.

We were there twice in past 2 weeks. Went to pub on a Friday night and everyone made us feel very welcome. Went back for dinner the following Friday. Food was wonderful and the owner is making many physical improvements.

I visited recently with my 5 year old son the food was in one word amazing totally homemade and you can tell, very reasonable prices we ended up eating on the Friday night, Saturday lunch and night and Sunday lunch which was excellent best I have had in a long time, would highly recommend as new owners really turning this place around

I say "Give the black Lion another try" because we have been calling in more or less annually since the 1980s passing Ellesmere on our narrowboat. There was a lot of stability for the early years but during the last 3-4 years, things changed, different managers etc, we were not sure what service or quality to expect, had a few bad experiences.........we now are moored close by........we noticed a few changes during the summer of 2018 and then heard the restaurant was open 7 nights( the nights open is important to us)so thought we'd give it another try. The atmosphere had vastly improved, the service vastly improved and the menue vastly improved, we don't normally have 3 courses but thought to be fair, try each one. We were not dissapointed all 3 very good, choice of beers is excellent and to cap it all it's dog friendly in the bar. Nice to see the Black Lion doing well again

Having been to this pub many times, when walking in from Colemere down the canal, it has now been taken over and great work is in progress. Friendly bar staff working through the make over,new food menu and a new face lift will be the making of this pub.

Had a lunchtime visit and on anther occasion a night time meal. While the menu is not too big, the value and quality are good. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Only one word to discribe, disgraceful, the meal was une,derble, the service was poor, the table was not clean, there was no atmosphere, on the hole very very poor.

Went for lunch again today (been around 6times since opening again) been for a family evening meal,Sunday roast and a few lunches now and all have been lovely, food portions are very big and value for money, will be going back again. Excellent service from staff and all staff are friendly. Lovely atmosphere.

Thought we would try this again now it’s reopened , they let us in with our dog and had the choice of the snug or outside, chose the beer garden for our food and was clean and tidy , I had the steak which was very good , mrs had the steak and ale pie which was also delicious . Staff were very friendly and food came out promptly, beer prices were also very reasonable. I think this place will now get very popular.

Nearly didn’t visit due to the recent reviews, however following a revamp we trusted our instincts and was pleasantly surprised by the value for money, good portion sizes and tasty food. Would thoroughly recommend.

Walked in to be followed around by someone an employee who asked us what we wanted.

Walked in and were made to feel so unwelcome we walked out again. Local pub for local people, reminded us of the slaughtered lamb in American Werewolf in London. Avoid.

6:30 on a Friday evening, three meals unavailable from a limited menu. This place suggests local, quality food from local suppliers. I would love to know where the scampi came from.

Very disappointed - floors sticky and still had last years xmas decorations up - don't think it's been decorated since the smoking ban indoors - couldn't wait to get out

Wanted to try the Sunday lunch and was very pleased we did. I chose beef from a choice of 4 meats and there was plenty of it, plus a Yorkshire, stuffing, carrot & swede, red cabbage, roast potatoes and/or mashed - a huge plate full ! Served by a very friendly and attentive waitress. We will definitely be back for more.

Have to say the food was first class 👏👏👏 tho sadly the young waitress needs some more training as was very little help when asked questions about the menu/food

Real cask ale. Traditional pub grub. Dog and kid friendly. Attentive staff. Lots of local colour and banter.
