Housmans Restaurant & Bar in Shropshire

Completed online booking form to book a table for a birthday meal to never receive any confirmation. Attempted to phone… phone number not in use. Used the online WhatsApp system… my message was read and never replied to!!! Awful customer service and have booked elsewhere instead.

We ate here last night and the food was really good - it’s a shame that the restaurant was so quiet but I’m guessing that people read old reviews and pay attention to them ! Give this place a chance people the food is much better than in the other restaurants in this little town 👍

Lovely Thai and Chinese food and tasty dim sum. Friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. Id recommend it for dinner in Church Stretton. Dog friendly too!

We have followed the re-opening of this restaurant with interest having been big fans of the place in its previous guise as a tapas and bar type place. We have held off visiting since its re-opening as the reviews on here were terrible. So we have given it a year hoping that they may have got their act together. Sadly, we were very, very disappointed. I’m struggling to find something positive to say about this place. However, I am not basing this review on what has gone before, this is an impartial observation. Not sure where to start but basically we were served a “takeaway” meal on a plate. By that I mean that there were no trimmings or additional bells and whistles that you should expect in a restaurant. There were only knives and forks on the tables, I had to ask for chopsticks, which in itself was a problem when the waiter had to hunt some down. My wife had two glasses of rose, both of which arrived at room temperature! The table napkins were cheap paper. We had just started eating our starter course when a different waiters appeared at our table with our main courses!! The prices were extortionate for what you were being presented with and the portions were small; although so were the plates that the food came on! Sadly we will not be going back unless this outfit up their game considerably. You also have to ask if Church Stretton needs another Asian restaurant?

Pretty much the same as the previous review. We had booked for 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and turned up to see that the place was in darkness and locked up… this is despite the opening hours were 12pm until 10pm. So we knocked the door in hope that we would be able to go to our table. A guy it seemed was locked in from the inside and asked us through the window to knock the residents door next door (it seems we had woke them up). Eventually after a brief wait someone came down and opened up. We took our seats at the table and proceeded to order our food and drinks. When ordering our food, we were then asked if we wanted to write on the menu what we wanted!! (We obviously said no) Any normal restaurant would have a notepad and take orders but this wasn’t a normal restaurant! He then took our orders of which he decided to write down on the menu. After waiting 1/2 hr some of the food came out and did not meet expectations. The chicken soup was spilled everywhere when it came to the table and if it wasn’t for the reactions of the customer then it would of been all over his clothes. The crispy fried wantons were meant to be filled with chicken and prawns (according to the menu) but only had flavourings. The waiter could not explain why due to a language barrier between him and the chef. Things got worse when he started swearing and at this point people were still waiting for food 15 minutes after the others came. We told him we were leaving and to forget it. It’s only a matter of time before this place is closed. They can’t run a bath let alone a restaurant!

Had table for four booked ....arrived on time to a closed door! Honestly we have been here often with previous owners and it was excellent every visit, with a special European grazing menu. I suspect most of the reviews posted were of the service provided by the ex owners. No excuses tendered, no messages received for reasons why doors were closed. Not the way to run a successful restaurant. If you book be very wary! This is not a fake review.

What a wonderful discovery is Housmans Pan Asia Restaurant and Bar. The welcome was very warm and the service very good. The menu varies from Asian to European and the choices are many and appealing. My husband chose a Thai Bento box which included a starter of 2 succulent chicken satay skewers with an authentic homemade satay sauce followed by a Thai green chicken curry with fragrant rice and each course was superbly cooked and tasted absolutely clean and delicious. I know because I couldn't resist sampling from my hubby's plate at times !!! I opted for the stir fried beef with ginger and spring onions with oyster sauce and it was the best of its kind which I have ever tasted and believe me I have eaten many and in many different locations. The dish was piping hot and every ingredient was freshly cooked including the good helping of pak choy, the delicious sauce both of which accompanied the ginger and spring onions. I also ordered the fragrant rice which matched the the dish very well. We really cannot wait to return and enjoy the wonderful and freshly cooked food at this restaurant. Well done to you all and particularly to the talented chef who came to ask how our meal was. Highly recommendable.

Never again. Placed order online and went to collect 40 minutes later. Place was empty; no staff and nobody dining. I waited, and waited and another customer arrived to collect their order. Front of house guy finally appeared after 5+ minutes, oblivious to the fact we were there. He sat at his laptop and streamed football to a large screen TV before a chef appeared and prompted the guy to attend to us. Guy advised me it would only be a few minutes. 10 minutes later, food finally appeared. Dire service. Mediocre food; Singapore rice was dry, stodgy and lacking flavour. Never again.

Church Stretton on a rainy Monday evening is not exactly a buzzing town. So Housmans pretty much self selected as our place to eat. But we were so glad that we went. Our food was freshly cooked, beautifully presented and really tasty. The wine was also well chosen. Everything reasonably priced. Service unrushed and attentive. All in all a really nice place to eat.

Thank goodness the other eateries weren't open on Sunday evening. We noticed the doorr to Housemans open and, yes, they were serving food. It was difficult to choose as there were many tempting dishes. Finally we close chicken teriyaki salad, beef teriyaki salad, king prawn dim sum, aromatic crispy duck with pancakes, egg fried rice, shared by three of us. Everything was excellent, freshly cooked and very tasty. The waiter was friendly and polite and the chef popped over twice, also polite and friendly. Definitely one to return to as we want to try more dishes.

Amazing food cooked with skill and care. We are a family of 5 and whilst we are British, we lived in Hong Kong for 15 years. We love this place, it reminds us of some of the best restaurants we know in Asia. The menu is not that of a typical English Chinese Restaurant, it is more subtle, cooked without MSG or excessive sugar or salt. The ingredients are fresh and local. I recommend the Satay (not Chinese, I know) and the Crispy Duck with pancakes. If "Uncle" has made the Spring Rolls do not miss them. Good beers and cocktails make this my favourite restaurant in Shropshire. Fabulous service from Mark and Fai...not forgetting "Uncle".

Lovely lunch, super tasty and a really good price. We enjoyed the green and massaman curries and the spring rolls and chicken satay. Thank you very much.

The food was excellent, the menu had familiar dishes but also new dishes to try. The staff was friendly and really went the extra mile to make sure you enjoyed your evening.

We enjoyed a great early evening meal here. The entire team was so helpful in ensuring we had a wheat free meal, and hand-made a sauce for us to dress the meat. The roast pork and crispy roast duck were cooked to perfection, and the bed of Pak Choi a great counterpoint to them. We’re coming back.

We enjoyed a delicious meal for Valentine's evening. The staff were very attentive and everything came out in a timely fashion, whilst also giving us the chance to enjoy conversation and the atmosphere. The table had a few little extra touches to mark the day (Rose petals, Roses and candles) and everything was very pleasant. Lovely, relaxed atmosphere with respectful spacing between tables. Take away options being picked up throughout the evening, discreetly and promptly dealt with. Had a visit from the chef and lovely to see the staff having some time together in the restaurant whilst maintaining respectful consideration for their customers. All in all, a very pleasant evening with some very tasty food. Thank you.

we had an excellent lunch here with good service . good & varied menu - not a pub. there is a small but significant lip to the front door and a narrow pavement, but it is doable in a wheelchair. Good disabled toilet.

We are regular visitors to Housmans and went for lunch today. We had a truly exceptional meal, beautifully presented and with excellent service. We really can not recommend this restaurant too highly. We just don’t understand why they haven’t got any AA stars. They certainly deserve them

Ideal place for a lunch with friends. The roast beef sandwich with salad and chips was just right. The ale was excellent. Good organisation regarding Covid sepatation. A please surprose to have the eat out scheme continued.

My partner and I enjoyed a staycation last weekend, and stumbled across this gem! The staff were very friendly and polite, and clearly Covid conscious too. The gin of the week was an absolute treat, and the food was outstanding. I had a chicken kiev and it was the best I’ve ever had. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and hope to be back when we’re next in the area.

I had scallops to start which were the best I've ever tasted, really devine. For my main I opted for a small dish of lamb koftas and added some chips, This dish was more than enough, it came with pita bread too for the kebab and a mint sauce. Delicious.

On first sight when you arrive you may think of this restaurant as being a bit down market with plain tables and a bar at the front. However once seated towards the rear you are presented with lovely staff and innovative food with excellent flavour, quantity and also with sensible pricing. Two of the fish mains were off the menu as their fish supplier had let them down, but there was enough left to have an enjoyable meal. So if you value food from a chef who understands flavour and sauces then give this place a try.

Great atmosphere and decor. Friendly staff, a lovely place to visit and socialise, we didn't eat here on this occassion so can not comment on that aspect.

We stumbled across this gem when staying overnight in Church Stretton and found that our hotel didn't offer evening meals. I can honestly say that the burger they produced was one of the nicest I have had for many years, while my wife's beetroot & goat's cheese terrine found similar favour.

We took advantage of the kind government offering of the eat out to help out scheme, and what also looked like a lot of others.A lovely weekend atmosphere was to be had, but all very well distanced and organised, a credit to the staff!The food was superb, all three courses were magnificent, and a nice selection of wines.We will definitely be back!

Excellent meal last night - all 3 courses (Scallops, Rib Eye and Cheesecake) were top drawer. Herb and Parmesan hand cut chips are worthy of an award! Some would maybe prefer more choice but I'd rather have quality over quantity. Lovely young girls who were serving. Would just like to see a better choice and changing selection of Real Ales and focus on how they are kept, now the Ale House has very sadly bit the dust.

We arrived early for our table (pre 7pm) and they had already run out of chicken kievs and the squid! Which ruined it for me. It's a shame as otherwise the food was good, they just need to work on their ordering.

Came here with family & my mother after lockdown started to ease, it's well organised for social distancing and still has a good atmosphere. The service & food was great. The crayfish mini grazing is well worth trying in my view. Black bomber cheese too...

We were the first customers on re-opening day and what a wonderful meal we had. We both chose lobster and they were some of the best we’ve ever had. They were beautifully presented with side orders of a seafood salad and chips and the lobster was incredibly tender. A brilliant meal and social distancing excellent.

It had to be a takeaway but there was absolutely no dip in the quality of the food, delivered to the house and steaming hot.We ordered tapas from the main grazing menu for five and there was just so much food we couldn't do it justice. The fish goujons are enormous.Still doing takeaways only I believe but well worth supporting in these most difficult times.

What a treat it’s been to have the most delicious food prepared and delivered to our self isolating home. We had fabulous fish and chips followed by wonderful lemon tart with raspberry sorbet. The sorbet was absolutely amazing. Please do support this local restaurant by ordering takeaway during these most difficult times so we can still enjoy it when all this is a distant memory.

We went to a fish supper and to listen to Hobsons Shanty Singers, in support of the RNLI . The entertainment was just wonderful, they sang for almost the whole night. The food was delicious and service was all we could have wished for. The ambience was perfect. Sorry but I have now run out of superlatives to describe what a fabulous night we had. All I can say is that it was A-MA-ZING!

We ate here following a recommendation from the owner of Victoria House where we were staying for the weekend and we were not disappointed. The service was excellent and the staff really friendly. I had burger and my wife had the chicken skewers and both meals were really nice. Would definetly eat here again if in Church Stretton.

Celebrated a milestone birthday here on Saturday evening and the service as ever was impeccable. Everything went well, they'd kept the cake for us and brought it over when given the nod. I didn't think the Tribute was at it's best and there was too much oily batter on the fish goujons but aside from that, everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a perfect evening.

We came across this little jewel by accident - it looks quite small from the front but don't be deceived it's lovely inside.We've had 2 smashing meals there now and they were very inexpensive compared what we've been getting for the same price in Shrewsbury lately (see my 2 latest reviews). The staff (so far we've met Ceres and Pete twice) are very friendly and super helpful and whoever is hidden away in the kitchen is making some really tasty food! We had a carrot, sweet potato, coconut and curry soup on our first visit.. It sounded a bit weird but now I dream of it, it was so yummy. Today he had a burger and I had wonderful fish and chips - both meals perfect and served with a smile. We haven't tried the special nights yet - such as live music nights but we are going to very soon. I want to recommend it there but then I want the place to myself!

Back in Housemans meeting friends and there's a great atmosphere.Stayed for a few pints and was so happy to see a great cask ale available. St Austell Brewery's Tribute Ale is a well known favourite of mine and it was reasonably priced by the look of my credit card the next day.Really must try the food again soon, I'm hearing very good reports.

We visited the weekend before Xmas and the place was very busy. Hwever, service was quick and they ahd everything we chose to make up our platter. All of it was great. I look forward to a return visit.

starters of prawns pil pil and spicy plaice goujons were fantastic. ordered steak and chips for tea and lamb kebab for mains. all excellent quality and service was fantastic.tip;the steak and chips could do with some greens alongside e.g tender stem broccoli, the kebab needed a flat bread

What a fabulous restaurant this is with an incredible good menu. We are lucky enough to be able to eat here on a fairly regular basis and always enjoy whatever it is that we choose to eat. Additionally the service is always superb and they have an extremely good wine list. Highly recommended

We stopped here for lunch today and the food was excellent. The roasted root vegetable soup and crayfish sandwich were fantastic and so well prepared.

We ate here twice when we spent a week in Church Stretton in September. It was by far the best meals we ate in the town. My husband was absolutely delighted with the quality of his steak and the way it had been cooked to perfection. Service is very friendly and professional and the prices are good. Both my meals were excellent, one of them being the Sunday roast. Can't go wrong dining at Housmans!

The food was outstanding here, treated my partner to his birthday meal here whilst having a couple of nights away in the Shropshire hills. We went for the tapas plates and were blown away by the food, we went for belly pork, calamari, chicken skewers, Camembert and a side of the Parmesan chips. It was the nicest meal we have had in a long time. The atmosphere is cosy and quite romantic. I would 100% recommend this place. Thank you

Three of us called in for lunch, one of whom has been several times before and recommended it. We certainly weren't disappointed. The staff were lovely, very friendly and efficient. We had light lunches as we were driving a long distance afterwards and didn't want to eat too much but we all enjoyed our food very much. It's a larger establishment that it appears from outside and offers everything from 'just a coffee' to dinner, cocktails and live music events. Prices were good and we left wishing we had somewhere similar closer to home!

Yet again another lovely evening as Housmans. The food was fantastic as always. They are able to cater for veggie, gluten free and even tomato intolerant!

Dropped in based on displayed menu and not disappointed. Duck leg salad was excellent but there were more traditional options that were done to a high standard if the burger other half had is to go by. Friendly staff. Snacking and full main options available along with sharing plates. Not for craft beer lovers but good choice of bottled beers. We visited at a quiet time so not sure what it will be like when full.

Just a massive thank you for an amazing dining experience all around. The food was fantastic. Christine did an amazing solo job in Neil's absence. My only criticism is the food was that good we ate far to much!. Cracking service from the bar staff. The ambience of this hidden gem is perfect. The service was unobtrusive but attentive. The meal was excellent - delicious and adpated to the dietary needs of the diners.

Staying locally and not wanting yet another pub meal, I found Housman’s just up the street. Although they were busy I was offered a table and was soon provided with a great fish dish cooked well and served with a smile.

I visit this about once a month and there is a great blend of familiar and changing menu. Best to book and get in before 8 oclock

Came here for food on Sunday. I ordered the fish and chips, which I rarely do as I don’t often find it gluten free. The tartar sauce was delicious and even the humble garden peas were tasty. I enjoyed every mouthful!!

I chose Housmans for one of the dinners for our walking group recently. We weren’t disappointed. Food and drink were excellent - wide selection, good quality and reasonably priced. Service attentive and friendly - staff were happy for individuals/couples to settle separately at the end thus avoiding the hassle that sometimes brings otherwise enjoyable evenings to an acrimonious end with arguments about who has eaten what. All in all a really nice place if u want to treat yourself to a “special” dinner in charming Church Stretton.

Although this restaurant was welcoming when we arrived at 8.10pm, it rapidly emptied of diners. By 8.45 pm we were the only people there. A couple arrived at that time and they were told that the kitchen was closed! The food is good, sophisticated and expensive but by 8.50pm the staff were wiping down the tables and blowing out the candles. Although they offered desserts and coffee, I think they would have been appalled if we had ordered them. So, a good meal was wrecked by our feeling that we were expected to leave pronto.

My second visit for lunch was a great success . I opted for the pork belly with Hoisin and seasonal vegetables . It was delicious , every mouthful was savoured . I washed it down with an excellent pint of Ludlow Gold , I couldn't fault a thing even if I'd been a cynical critic , it was a great experience , thanks Houseman's , I will return again soon .

Had such a good meal on first visit we went again later in week. Staff very friendly and helpful without being over bearing. Asked a question about cooking and invited to the kitchen to talk to the chef. Brilliant. Nice choice of beers as well.

Have to say I was dubious about being taken to this restaurant (big city snobbery), as my mum and I are VERY difficult to please 100%......but WOW! I loved everything about it - from the laid back atmosphere and unfussy tables, to the delicious, adventurous, well executed food and impeccable service ( which was attentive without being intrusive, a pet hate of mine). Absolutely recommend and cannot wait to go back

The chicken fell on the stick, and the 3 cooked chips were great but best of all was the gluten free fish goujons, I don’t get to have these often so was a treat. Quick and friendly service too

Popped in without booking for a Friday night tea. Quiet in there. Loud man at bar but luckily he left! Food was really good and service was fine. We had battered fish and a burger. Both well presented and large portions. Could not fault it. Shame it wasn’t busier.

Took the opportunity to check out the restaurant on a visit to this delightful market town. The staff were very accommodating and help us through the menu and specials. All dishes were quality and we really got value for our money. Having experienced countless disappointing European meals in snazzy restaurants in so called “cosmopolitan” UK cities it was a nice surprise to discover such quality European cuisine in the gem of an establishment.

Went here recently with my wife and had a really nice meal, the menu was full of interesting choices and when the food arrived it didn’t disappoint, the staff were very friendly and the place had a good vibe, we enjoyed the evening so much that we returned the following week with friends, we decided to go with the grazing menu which we all enjoyed and the experience was just as good as our first visit. Would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to the most discerning gourmet.

OMG I love this place! We've been to Church Stretton a few times but this was the first time of eating here and certainly won't be the last. The food was absolutely amazing! Lovely tapas and the flavours were just incredible. I can't praise this place highly enough. Great service too. 100% recommend!

We were visiting Church Stretton and pre booked our table based on the reviews posted on trip advisor. We had three courses and I would highly recommend the belly pork as a starter and the lamb as a main. The staff were very friendly and attentive and added to the experience. The Housmans deliver delicious food and are great value for money. Give this restaurant a visit you won't regret it.

We visited with a couple of good friends on their advice and ordered off the grazing menu and it did not disappoint. One of the best meals we have had in a long time, thoroughly recommend it and we will certainly be visiting again next time we are down this way.

We visited the restaurant twice whilst staying locally on holiday. We had Sunday lunch and then the grazing menu in the evening. Excellent food and service on both occasions. Definitely worth a visit.

We were lucky enough to chance upon this friendly restaurant serving the most incredible food whilst passing through. The presentation was eye-poppingly good and it was even better to eat! The triple-cooked chips in particular were to die for! I really feel we got value for money! ☺

Came here on recommendation from the owners of the accommodation we are staying at for our wedding anniversary dinner. Good ambience. Big portion of white bait to start which we shared as so generous and for a very reasonable £4. I had steak and husband had slow cooked beef. Food very tasty and prompt arrival. Only complaint is weren't told about specials board so only saw it after we had ordered and then we needed to change our order! Good value for money. Worth a visit.

Visited with six adults. The de or is charming and welcoming. Good range of meals for most. Our vegetarian was disappointed as the only choice was gnocchi which did not appeal but as he had to eat it had to be that.

We last visited here in July 2015 and were pleased to find that it continues to offer great food and service. Staff go the extra mile to help and although we had a slight issue with our Baked Alaska it was resolved quickly without any fuss. We will be back!

We came here for a friend’s 60th. We were looked after brilliantly and the varied menu worked perfectly for our group. They went above and beyond what we had expected and we enjoyed a memorable evening thanks in a large part to the wonderful staff. The food ain’t bad either ! Highly recommended.

Visited Housemans for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. After seeing the good reviews on here I thought I would visit. Service was brilliant. The food was delicious. Lovely atmosphere and everywhere was spotless. My only criticism would be my seat was rather uncomfortable and I would like to sit on another seat with more padding. But that’s me being fussy. They have the graze menu, we ordered four items and chips and it was enough for two. The chips with parmesan on were tasty. I liked the fish gougons in a curry sauce . They had live music .

We went here with friends on a Tuesday night - it was pleasantly busy and the food and service was excellent. Good wine list too.

Lunch on a wet cold winter day was an absolute pleasure. Welcoming staff, fire blazing and good coffee - all massive ticks in our opinion. We ate baked camembert with delicious chutney and cheese and tomato sandwiches with very fresh granary bread. Would certainly return and try dinner one evening for cocktails as the menu looks very good. Highly recommended.

My mother and I visited for a light lunch - the service was impeccable; such friendly and efficient staff it was a pleasure to be served by them! The food was GREAT - all in a lovely atmosphere … Worth a visit if you're in Church Stretton, we'd definetly return for sure!

Visited with the in-laws! Very enjoyable visit! Excellent beers. All enjoyed the food! Excellent portions and quality! Beautiful tastes and presentation. We will return
