The Black Lion in Kingston upon Thames

You know what, I'd stay here again. It was cheap and cheerful but it had exactly what we needed. Close to restaurants and the train station, massive triple room with a clean bedroom and bathroom, fresh towels on the bed, yes it's above the pub/bar and was quite loud until about 11pm but if you can hear it it means you should be downstairs! Staff friendly, easy to find, plenty of parking around. Couldn't fault it!

We were due to arrive late and the team made sure we weren’t stressed and welcomed us just before midnight. Room was spacious and warm - good shower, good TV and coffee facilities.

I booked a room for a overnight stay whilst in Surbiton on business via booking.com All the rooms are situated above a bustling pub. The entrance to the accommodation is via a key coded gate and through the beer garden My room was large , clean and very comfortable The bargain price of £77 is something special The only negative is that there’s no parking but plenty of free on street parking immediately outside Parking charges are in affect between 6.30pm and 8.30am I will be returning

This is one of our favorite local spots to go to. As I am typing this my other half is actually there with a mate. Very good to see various sports and as they have multiple screens it is easy to find a seat to watch it. The guv is an absolute hoot and the manager remembers your face and knows what your drinks are. We always have a good time in here and look forward to going back. They also have rooms upstairs and one of our friends stayed there for a night a couple of months ago and he said that it was comfortable and clean, which is really all that you need if you are just staying overnight for business.

Hairs in pizza, flies all around the bar. Would not return if you gave me the chance to. Tried booking one of their hotel rooms and was met with rude and inappropriate behaviour with the owner of the pub as he seemed seriously drunk. Was screaming and yelling profanity as well.

We planned a little trip away to go to Hampton Court. Found this place in Surbiton as it was by train station and reasonably priced. I knew it was above a pub but as only sleeping there, we didn't mind. We was greated by a lovely lady who showed us to our room. The room was actually smaller than I was lead to believe. Only 1 plug socket in whole of room. The kettle wouldn't reach so you had to move nearer to the plug. Not really good health and safety. The bed was small and uncomfortable. Only 1 pillow each, tv was really high so you got neck ache a lot. There was a massive draft from the window which made the room very cold even with the heating on. Old sash windows but could have been sorted. First night the pub was really quiet abd no noise outside. Which we thought was good. But 2nd night I was angry. For some reason the pub stayed open late. You could hear an argument and that kept going till at least 6 am. Even my partner heard it. They just wouldn't shut up. Also they were emptying bottles in to a bin. Not acceptable. We tried to find someone in the morning but no one was around . Overall we will not come back or recommend to anyone.

I can’t say how many times I’ve been to this pub but it has that wonderful mix of ordinary boozer, great live music and exceptional service which are hard things to find in one place. Please visit any night but particularly a Saturday night when they have great live music. You’ll have a good time and make friends if you wish

Booked via a recommendation from a friend and wasnt dissapointed. Lovely pub on the corner of the high street. Friendly team who allowed me to check in early and showed me to my room for the night. Perfect for an over night stay. Would recommend for a short couple of nights visit. Not to far from the river too.

Used to come here regularly and after a while popped back on a footy day. The first round was £9.90 and then the second was £12.90 with a very mild variation for the two drinks ordered. A friend joined for the next round and it had become over £20 for three drinks. Turns out the chap behind the bar had been charging for doubles for a Malibu and prior to that a Disarrono for rounds two and three. I challenged them after the third round once the penny dropped and they I said it was my responsibility to make sure the prices were right. They refunded me £4 which was an admission of guilt. The sad thing is the drinks were only singles so it wasn’t as if it was a double by mistake. I saw the chap pour them! All in all you can’t trust this lot. But is a shame as was always a good pub with decent food. Now the menu is just pizza which looks pretty grim. All the staff pop out and get fast food from KFC or Maccie D’s to eat which says it all really. Would avoid these days as they now rip you off and the things that used to be good are no more. Sad times for a once good pub.

My daughter and I stayed overnight at the Black Lion. We'd been at a concert in Kingston and my daughter had booked the room, as a surprise for me, so we didn't have travel home late at night. The member of staff who greeted us didn't greet us. She gave us the key and said the bar would be open for a little while longer. We paid and then I asked for a drink and she said it was now shut!! She led us out of the pub and through a dilapidated wooden gate, past a dirty kitchen prep area and up a few flights of stairs, which were covered with dirty, dusty carpet. She then pointed to our room, gave us the key and left. Upon entering the room we were 'welcomed'by the same dirty dusty carpet that was on the stairs but this one had a massive stain at the entrance!! The room was dingy and in desperate need of updating. We were tired and went to bed. My daughter realised her bed was on a slant and I investigated only to find one leg was missing at the head end. I also noticed lots of rubbish and dust under the bed. We both looked under the other three beds and found an unopened packet of Durex, cigarette papers, more rubbish and dust! We were both pretty sickened by what we'd seen but it was now 11.30pm and rather late for us to find a better quality establishment to stay in. I walked back to my bed and stood on a cable clip which was one of two that had been left by my bed. My daughter tried to open the windows as it was hot and stuffy in the room, but the secondary glazing was not fit for purpose and had been hung horizontally even though it was made to be hung vertically!! I could continue but, in short, we were mis sold. Our room looked nothing like the bedroom photo on booking.com and yet when we left in the morning, the rooms next to ours did! We couldn't even gain access back into the pub to hand the key back as no staff were around and the door was locked at 10am. I eventually got a young lad's attention who was hoovering and gave him the key and the cable clip. We were so glad to get home, shower and cleanse such a horrible experience for us both. Oh and yes, we complained but Lindsay says she couldn't see anything wrong with our room!!! The cleaner had maybe heard us moaning about the room when we left and covered her tracks or Lindsay was in the wrong room. N.B Please request that you aren't given room 7 when you book.

On entry to the Black Lion, I was clear to the unwelcoming waitress that my friends and I were only there for drinks and dessert, a clear opportunity for a pub to reject based on their current guidelines. We were told we could sit outside, by the road and we accepted as we were aware different households sit outside. Once we were brought our drinks, we were told to order our food, but now dessert was no longer a substantial meal, but a sausage roll and scotch egg is ... Before ordering we were then told that the £2 sausage roll (on the menu and plastered all over the pub) was now £4.95 ... When I questioned this, I was simply but sassily told that 'the kitchen has made an error'. But the signs and menus were clearly printed on paper that very morning. We decided to just deal with this and ordered another drink with our overpriced snacks. The real cherry on top was the fact that we looked upon three tables of men drinking their pints, arms around each other enjoying the warmth inside. The photo attached is apparently three tables 'socially distanced'. For the hour and a half, we spent there we were pestered three times to order the overpriced sausage rolls, while the men inside were only approached with the arm around them from the bartender. I questioned where their substantial meal was to the waitress but was told rudely that if WE didn't order food, she personally would be fined £5,000 ... She then said I could speak to the manager …. Who was just as unimpressive and simply walking past our table and saying ‘let’s order some food now ladies’ … and sundering back into the warm pub. We decided to except defeat and leave as quickly as we could ….. but not without being served our burnt and unappetising sausage rolls ... and 4 times the price of a simple Greggs. I understand these new guidelines are hard for pubs and we are happy to respect the rules … But what is the difference between four young girls and a group of 10 men … I would have bet my sausage roll that their drivers licenses didn’t share the same address ….

Was recommended this pub by a Hinchley Wood local mate - and came here before dropping off a colleague to the nearby station. Incredible timing as we managed to avoid the torrential rain - drinks only. The prices of wine, I noticed, are a very reasonable price, so colleague had a large Pinot Grigio, whilst I stuck to a Diet Coke. Nice interior. Staff decent.

Went for Sunday lunch & hopefully a good selection of ales... couldn’t be better. Owner couldn’t have done more. Menu was great but allowed us to have multiple meats, extra veg and the cauliflower cheese came out bubbling so knew it was fresh. All sport and and great atmosphere. I’ve searched around Wimbledon for a Sunday lunch and never found anything decent. Was lucky to get a table at 2pm as so busy so booked for next week.

Enjoyed a lovely Sunday Roast at The Black Lion. Lamb. Beef. Pork. And Chicken. All delicious. Yorkshire’s especially. Generous portions and great service. Thoroughly recommend. See you again soon!

Mark and his staff provided a home from home as I transitioned to a new home. Over and above the offerings of a great bar (all sports shown) and excellent food, nothing was too much. The rooms are as advertised and above all comfortable and homely.I will continue to use the facilities on offer for all of my trips through the Greater London area as the location is convenient for the major airports and motorway links to the North of England.Mark, Lindsay and all the staff of the Black Lion thanks for everything.GH

The Black Lion is a well-run friendly sports pub very popular with the locals of Surbiton. The rooms have been completely refurbished to a surprisingly high standard and are very comfortable. The location is close to the high street with a good array of shops. Sainsburys is very near. Saturday nights the pub sometimes has live bands. We enjoyed our stay. Rather fun to stay upstairs in a jolly pub!

A big pub with good beers and food with a friendly atmosphere . Does a great quiz night which you have to book in advance if you want a table but well worth it.

I went with my husband and 4 friends on Sunday 25th August. The food was superb. Excellent choice of roasts. Tasty selection of fresh vegetables. Presented well and piping hot. I didn't have dessert, I was too full The facilities were spotless. We will definitely revisit

Second time trying the Sunday Roast and both times have been the best roast i have had in the area for ages. The pub itself is just your run of the mill place, loads of tv's showing football, friendly bar staff and a good atmosphere but the dinner is exceptional, Had the roast lamb, came with proper roast potatoes, home made Yorkshire pudding, mash , green cabbage parsnips roasted carrots swede and cauliflower cheese ....sounds like a lot and it is but me and the wife polished it off no problems. Loads of meat, veg cooked just the way i like it, tappy potatoes and a huge Yorkshire, for £13.95. Definitely the best roast i have had in the area and ive lived here for ever, cant belive it has taken me so long to find it, will def be back.

Best Sunday lunch I have had for years . Plenty of good food and varieties and not expensive. Will be back. Landlord very good and creates a good atmosphere.

This is a great pub. A proper, authentic neighbourhood pub with friendly staff, a great landlord, decent beer, sport on the telly - and a *fantastic* Sunday roast (and other decent pub grub too). The portions are generous to say the least and the value for money is incredible, especially compared to some of the overpriced fare at other pubs in Surbiton. It’s all cooked by the landlord’s sister which only adds to the friendly, family feel to the place. We come in regularly either with groups of friends, or for a family meal with our kids and we’re always welcomed in and well looked after. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about the place. It’s just a great pub.

Just been to watch the football & had just finished my second drink. Just as I did so, I had a rather large Irish bloke come over spitting in my face, arms in the air talking about the cost of his tele. I explained to him I’d just finished my drink and was about to buy another but this just seemed to enraged the him more. All in all one of the most peculiar Wednesday nights I’ve had. I’ve been there a few times but now unfortunately would definitely not recommend. Either the bloke was drunk, he was not the landlord or he’d had a rough day at work... Its a shame as the bloke who I previously thought was the landlord seems so nice

Want to say first how nice it was to see a friendly pub. Greeting ,service ,staff very attentive. And WOW the Lamb Roast was fantastic 5veg ,mash and roast potatoes stuffing and plenty of delicious lamb. And they slotted us in even tho they were very busy. Football on and that wasn’t a problem.

Checked into the holiday inn Kingston south. As it was champions league night I needed somewhere to watch the game. Recommended the Black Lion, was a bit of a walk 15 mins. Expectations were low as not been in area before however, they were more than surpassed. Ordered the burger with sweet potato fries . Wow genuinely one of the best burgers I’ve had. Lovely toasted British bun handmade patty bacon and the usual burger accompaniments. That and a few pints of estrella, made for a good evening. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

I have been to many London pubs but the Black Lion is the best. Wide selection of drinks and excellent Young's bitter. Sunday roast is fantastic - large platefuls and good value. Bar is often busy but staff are always attentive and the landlord is great - always has time to say hello.

While many pubs are quickly becoming bistro-pubs and restaurants in hiding - the Black Lion is a proper British pub!

This is a lively pub, often busy around the bar with people watching sports and a well known landlord, but it’s very welcoming and I was so pleasantly surprised with how good the roast was, hearty and homemade, it felt just like something your mum/gran would make, only tastier. Great portion size and friendly staff. Will definitely be back, feels like a local :)

Hadn't been here for years and can see why. Popped in one Sunday recently and the football was on so was busy. Standing room only. Dearer Peroni then the riverside pubs but with slow service.

Popped in for a few quick pints before heading for a curry. Although a Youngs House it always has a couple of guest beers. This time it was Twickenham's Summer Sun and Surrey Hills Ranmore. Plumped for the Summer Sun and it was bright and in great condition, so I stuck with it. Staff were quick despite it being very busy (a 70th birthday party was on the go!), polite as ever and friendly to boot. Thoroughly recommend dropping in.

Beautiful traditional pub just near Surbiton. Here you can find a good variety of beers and some good food. Prices and qty of food are very very gooooood. Try it if you can!

One pint each before Chinese meal over the road with friends. OK beer. OK price. Efficient service. Busy on a Friday night with a decent, unpretentious “buzz”. At the risk of resorting to a cliché, the bar itself and layout reminded me a bit of the Queen Vic in Eastenders; and that is not a criticism. Lots of screens which no doubt pay dividends when there is sport on. Mostly male clientele when we visited but not rowdy or overly loud or “blokey”. Didn’t eat or go to the toilet.

I've been known to frequent the Black Lion, especially during football nights. It's a great local community public house, with staff and management to suit

Loved the Black Lion! It was surprisingly quiet with probably only 5 tables of people. Lovely atmosphere and quaint outdoor space, which is not visible from the street. The chicken burger was the best I had had in Surbiton. Healthy, if a burger can be healthy, as it was a breast of grilled chicken rather than an oily deep fried one. Delicious. Will definitely be back.

The most awful chaviest pub I’ve EVER been to! Honestly, the clientele are awful, the level of dignity showed by the locals to new people was that of content! In somewhere like Surbiton which is supposed to be considered an area of kind people, this pub showed the opposite. It was a hostile environment, not welcoming and nobody had any manners. I would never go here again

Cramped old school boozer that's one of the only remaining pubs in Surbs to show the footy, since the Vic decided to go upmarket. A sad, sad time because the Vic was much more of an acceptable option, women had been known to venture inside and have a good time! This place is dripping in testosterone, a 'men only' affair (and not just on match days). This place just has a grim atmosphere...one I can't see it shaking. I'm not sure it wants to.

What a fantastic pub, the staff are very friendly and the manger makes you feel very at home, the pub has some amazing bands playing and a very sophisticated quiz night on a Tuesday,I shall be returning again.

A group of us were sitting in the pub, drinking a mixture of beer, lemonade and water, when a manager approached us and demanded to know how many of us were ordering food, saying that "we don't mind giving people tap water if they pay for a meal!" As it happens, two of us had eaten there, as well as spending plenty of money on drinks. To make the situation even more unpleasant, no one in the whole room seemed to have food, they were all just drinking beer and watching the football. We felt very singled out and couldn't help but wonder if they were behaving this way towards us because we were a group of young people. Everything else about the pub was fine, I actually quite enjoyed my roast. It's just a shame that something as rude and unnecessary as that ruined the experience for us...

A group of us arrived to watch Sunday football. After we had finished food and some sat drinking water, and others beer or other drinks, the owner came and demanded to know who had ordered food, as they did not serve tap water unless you ordered food. Needless to say, we ordered nothing more and left as soon as the game finished.

Awful place, horrible staff that are far too pushy and very rude. Cramped with no space, terrible food and overpriced for the very bad quality. Would not recommend! How this place ever has people in it when surbiton is full of other nice pubs I have no idea.

A football game on the telly on a Saturday, and there's now just one choice for Surbiton's punters - the Black Lion at the Maple Road/Brighton Road lights.

Nos encanta este pub. Los propietarios son amables y un pub inglés. Tienen un montón de pantallas y asientos para ver el fútbol y también tienen un montón de bandas en vivo muy buena. Los asados del domingo son muy buenas y las tapas de...

A menudo visitan este pub para ver el tope. Siempre una buena noche y un gran ambiente. Es rápido. Zona exterior con muchos asientos.

Esto es todo lo tradicional de un pub, ya que te puedes encontrar, dirigido por un padre e hijo con experiencia de muchos años en el negocio. Buena selección de cervezas, incluyendo jóvenes y Twickenham cervezas, la comida se sirve hasta las 9 pm, regular noches con música en directo y un concurso semanal muy entretenido en martes.

El Black Lion nunca ha sido conocido por la comida (excepto por el abundante almuerzo de domingo, el cual parece ser una característica de la mayoría de los pubs estos días), pero un reciente cambio significa este pub tradicional ha aumentado su juego.

Fuimos a cenar el domingo como no de zona. . Bastante concurrida como el fútbol en el bar, pero tienen una zona de comedor lejos de todo eso. Mid week pre Christmas get together. Large old school pub. Clean, reasonably priced, tasty beer. Pub wasn't busy but you had to squeeze past the locals sitting all around the bar, if I had been by myself or just in a couple that would have put me off. I get the impression this isn't somewhere for youngsters (university down the road but no students present) or the wine bar set (that's me) but it seemed well run. Standard suburban pub.

Great welcome and fantastic service from the team at The Black Lion. 3 courses all served on time and hot and tasty food. Nice garden area and good local feel to the pub.

Went for a quick drink. There wasn't much free space inside but plenty outside. Some comfy seating areas with heaters, but heater wasn't really warm enough. Staff were friendly. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but no complaints.

Great for lunch and a pint. Excellent outdoor facilities. Caring pub which actually has notices "Please be quiet and respect our neighbours" (May seem small to note but it does show the pub is responsible). Extremely varied evening entertainments. Best part is the traditional feel and being able to sit, hear each other and chill.

Decent traditional pub with great outdoor seating. Well run place with decent staff and good beer. Good atmosphere usually busy but you can always get served.

The Euros were on when we had a quick drink here a few weeks ago. Nice pub atmosphere, lots of seating available, barmaids were very quick to serve and friendly to all. Would visit again!

Always seems to be lively with a good mix of people and age groups. Drinks selection pretty good considering it's a Youngs brewery pub. Good bar staff who seem to know what they are doing. Good pub food but not much more.

I've been to this pub a few times to either watch the football, have a drink, or have a meal! Always a really nice atmosphere! Great pub and will always visit if in the area!

Friday 28th August, we met up with 3 friends for a drink in the Black Lion . There is an entrance to the pub from Maple Road and Brighton Road. We got a table in a room off to the right from the main bar.When we arrived we ordered our 2 drinks at the bar, having already found somewhere to sit. The person who served us was polite and friendly. Our 2 drinks were £7.60, which is dearer than our local up the road, but it did not matter as it was nice to sit in a well maintained clean pub.We ended up staying here till closing time, it was a great night catching up with friends we had not seen for a while. The pub was reasonably busy but everyone appeared to be out enjoying their Friday night which gave a good atmosphere to the place. There were people of all ages in the pub, had a real local feel to the place. All of the bar staff were efficient and friendly. We will be back.The only thing that let the pub down was the gents toilets.
