I was here with a friend this Saturday eve and their DJ was so horrible, half the pub was empty by 9pm. Music so loud, you couldn’t even have a conversation if you were screaming.

Fantastic staff, beer and company. You’d be nuts not to drop in. Back again today and BB King back on playing in the background. Perfect. Having been dragged out yesterday when The Thrill Has Gone was playing for me. Still no good story ever started with we went out for a salad.

Lovely little Fullers pub just outside Surbiton Station. The barmaid was lovely: very polite and friendly and happy to have a chat. Numerous comfortable seating options available with a slightly raised area in the far corner. Three large windows in the front provide lots of light and a double skylight with coloured glass adds more together with something a little different. The Guinness was excellent

The joy of the railway station pub is an almost universally appreciated joy. And while The Surbiton Flyer isn’t technically a station pub, categorised in my mind by having a departures screen somewhere inside so you can see how many more pints you can squeeze in before running for your train, it’s proximity to Surbiton station certainly brings it close. An old Barclays bank, bought and converted by Fullers 1995, it’s a cosy boozer with a clean interior. Since it’s refurb some 4 odd years ago(?), it’s brought with it that All-Bar-One aesthetic, weirdly keeping in theme with grand Bank entrances, hotel lobbies and railway station concourses. It’s just a bit posh basically, but a sort of faux-poshness, filled with people waiting. Drinks-wise, it’s Fullers and your usual Fullers pub beers. Nice to see (another, since Fullers are only down the road) local brewery here with Big Smoke Electric Eye, although on this occasion, it was a little soapy. In my previous visits here, the London Pride has always been excellent - I should’ve known better. I haven’t had the food here but it does get good reviews. While I love to get proper unsurprising pub grub, it’s hard around this particular one. Next door you have Surbiton Kebabs & Fried Chicken - who I love, not only for the chicken/wraps, but when a car reversed into their shop a few years back, they chose to rebuild it exactly as it looked before and always has. The station itself has more history than the pub. It is “considered one of the finest modernist stations in Great Britain”, is Grade II listed, built in 1937, and designed by Scottish architect James Robb Scott (also designed Waterloo and Richmond among others). It would be nice if they cleaned it once in a while, although it is set for a huge refurb so maybe they can find time to push a broom around. The station was used in Harry Potter if you’re into that too. Overall, if you’re in the area and you find yourself with some time before getting on a train, make sure you’re by the kebab shop entrance, grab a pint, and some wings for the journey. A compact Fullers pub perfect to relax in while whittling down the minutes.

I visit this pub with my wife after passing several times having just moved to the area. Whilst the decor, setting and staff were highly commendable, unfortunately one barman took it upon himself to make us feel extremely unwelcome. We visit with a small puppy and where quizzed in great sarcastic detail not only as to why we got a puppy in lockdown (as if that was a crime and extremely irresponsible), but as to 'what we'd do with our dog should we go on 'ski trips', which we have never done and was quite odd to say the least. The barraging didn't end there... after muttering under his breath several times that the pub wasn't catered for dogs (even though we had asked upon entering) he delved to ask what we did for jobs (one of us self employed, the other an accountant) which didn't live up to his expectation, as we were met with an aggressive 'if that's how you want to live' comment. All a rather odd exchange and one that filtered its way round the pub as onlookers had seen what had happened. Such a shame, as we'd like to visit again given the location, but after this episode and reaction from others in the vicinity of the bar- I feel we won't be the last to not do so.

Something must be wrong with the chef's personal life recently otherwise there's no valid explanation as food was inedible. All the potato chips were so burnt they were unrecognisable as potatoes. And these were normal HOUSE CHIPS (not even sweet potato, take note of how dark they were in the pic and take reference to the slice of lemon for a colour reference guide). My beef burger was so dry that you can't simply bite through, and the only way was to cut through the patty seperatly WITH FORCE using knife and still the patty would take time to chew through. How would they even have the audacity to serve these up?

The Flyer is not the place to go if you want cheap beer - it's hard to find any change from a tenner if you buy a couple of pints of the (well-kept, to be fair) London Pride. Cheap beer is over the road and up the hill a bit at the Wetherspoons, but for a bustling, friendly after-work atmosphere, the Surbiton Flyer is better. There's a nice ambient buzz about the place, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Good choice of tables and - at 6pm on a weekday evening - a constant throughput of customers coming and going from the station.
