Drove past whilst looking for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Lovely and very friendly people who made us feel very welcome. If you are looking for a traditional English breakfast then this is the place to go. We will return for either lunch or dinner because the menus also looked very pleasant again, for home cooked food, using local resources.

Were looking for a couple of night's escape at half term. The owners of the Blacksmiths Arms went out of their way to make us welcome, and we would definitely recommend it for reasonable no frills accommodation. Home cooked food and superb breakfasts, in an area where overnight rooms are at a premium. Emma, Gary and (particularly) Chelsea were great hosts and had some good chats.. Pool table was enjoyed by the guys. Be warned that they close at 5.00 on Sundays, which seems common in the area.

I recently spent a lovely day at The Blacksmiths Arms halland, using their function room for a charity sewing day. Emma, Gary and Chelsea were all very helpful to our group, providing us with tea and coffee during the day and a wonderful buffet. Some of our group wasn’t sure how a pub function room could work for a sewing day, but at the end of it they all agreed it was a fab day, and we’ve booked to go back for another sewing day! Emma was very helpful with everyone’s dietary requirements, nothing was too much trouble. The function room itself is very comfortable and we are all looking forward to going back.

Was looking forward to having lunch here on my birthday - we looked online and saw the kitchen shut at 3 which was perfect for us as we were on route somewhere and this was to be a nice stop for lunch. Arrived at 2:45 to be told they stop doing food at 2:45 - no sandwiches nothing. Very disappointing. I would say, if you stop doing good at 2:45, why not say you do. Even the sandwich board says lunch served til 3pm.

Popped in for a drink whilst in the area reminiscing. Barmaid made no attempt to engage in any sort of welcoming chat to us, her customers. Managed to talk to those sat at the bar whilst serving us though. Even when I asked a question I was completely blanked! This place is not the place for welcomes!

We booked B&B for a night. When we booked the price I had been given wasn't the price we paid on arrival. We paid £99 for the smallest room possible and breakfast isn't included. A 'continental' breakfast is, but you have to pay another £5 for a full English. Not good value for money at all. And the breakfast was nothing special with the cheapest bread possible! Disappointed and would not stay again. I wrote directly to the pub to query the price and tell them of my disappointment but they didn't bother to respond.

If you are looking for somewhere to stay in East Sussex you won't go far wrong if you book up at The Blacksmith's Arms, Lewes Road, Halland, BN8 6PN Tel. 01825 840304. Emma and Gary and their daughter, Chelsea, will be very welcoming. Very good food. The ham (best I've tasted for a long time), egg and chips was delicious and very generous. The pub sits next to a roundabout so is very easy to find. There is a good car park and the room was very comfortable. Chelsea is very pleasant and jolly. There is a nice open fire and it is very cosy. I understand that they have only recently taken the pub over however you wouldn't know that as they seem very established. When I need accommodation in the area again I will definitely be rebooking. Thank you for a nice stay. Kind regards.

Asked a question to the barmaid regarding the old park attached. Got told it’s been gone for over six years (lie) been going there with the kids for years. Owner took offence about changes and genuinely thought I was having a go with the questions. instead of embracing the input from locals. All 3 people working where very rude and explained they’ll use the park across the road then come here for drink( which cracked me up even more. I think these new owners are just happy to have a roof over their head tbh. My family also had food there a few weeks ago and all where poorly for days, as nothing was cooked thoroughly. Bad atmosphere inside and also opens when it feels like it. My advice, cross the road and go to Tex mex lock stock, it’s a lot better with a park out the way for the kids and for the adults to get a bit of piece. Real shame as Halland is too small to have bad feedback, and a landlord on the defensive says it all . This place has had far too many managers, and not one knows how to adapt. Pretty comical. My advice drive straight over the roundabout and continue to a pub call the highlands. Great food/atmosphere and enough for kids. Enjoy East Sussex.

This stop for lunch was an absolute gastro-mistake. The customer service wasn't good at all - waiting for food for ages (over 30-40 mins for fish and chips) and when we asked what's happening with the food, they went to check it out in the kitchen but never came back to us with updates. FOOD if you could still call it like that wasn't digestible and no one from our group was able to finish more than half the portion even though non of us is very picky and returning food. We were really hungry but not even that helped us to finish the meals. Disgusting, not fresh, oily and tasteless. Attractive outside dining, but we had to go inside to see full menu and to order, although they did bring drinks out to us. This helped, as we both have to use sticks for walking, and the steps in were not easy. I had a starter, after about 45 minutes, and alf an hour later dinner arrived - it was 9.15 by then. We were struck by the good friendly atmosphere in this pub. The landlord went out of his way to enthuse about the real ales he had on offer. It is unusual in these mass produced lager days to find someone who was keen to praise the benefits of real ales. I was happy to select a pint of the genuine local Harvey's ale .The landlord introduced me to an alternative which was equally appealing. Whist we had already eaten quite enough for the day we were tempted to try their home made blackberry and apple crumble .Suffice it to say we were not disappointed-delicious.

I heard it was under new management so thought we'd give it a try. Upon arrival there was nowhere to park since a lorry was blocking several parking spaces not ideal when your with someone with limited mobility. The bar lady was outside for a smoke so I asked if they were serving food it was 7.30pm and she said yes they had just started cooking. We ordered a bottle of wine and sat down to peruse what turned out to be an uninspiring menu. However Lamb Shank was on the specials board so we both went for that. After waiting 30 minutes we were told there was no lamb Shank, I asked why it took 30 minutes to tell us this and was told because the chief was cooking someone else's meal. Clearly no multi tasking or forward planning goes on in that kitchen! After deliberating the limited menu again we decided on ham egg & chips surely a pub staple only to be told after the lady checked with the chef that there was only enough ham for one! Why so little food when they had only just started cooking on a Thursday night?! We took our wine and left. How these people run a business and expect to make a profit or have repeat custom is beyond me!

I stayed here for one night as I was visiting my mother in Ringmer and it was about the only place I could find under £50 in the area. The criticism of most of the other contributors is spot on. The place is poorly maintained and could do with a top to bottom clean. When I got there the girl behind the bar couldn't find the key strait away - but to her credit she sat be down, poured me a pint and went and found it. When I got in my room the sink in my had a hole in the porcelain that had been badly repaired and leaked into the waste basket. I challenged the manager in the morning and he was insistent that it was recent and he hadn't been able to get it repaired properly since the previous night (I didn't believe him). The noise of the traffic on the A22 kept me awake most of the night. I didn't have dinner in the pub but had the 'Full English' the following morning as it was included in the price of the room. I accept that it's hard to mess up a fried breakfast but everything was piping hot and pretty good. My only complaint is that I asked for poached eggs (having been told they could do them) and got fried. On check out the manager also tried to charge me for the pint I had been given when there was no key for my room. I questioned this and he waived the cost. The one saving grace was the girl working behind the bar. Charming and polite, ensured everyone was served and even brought my jacket to my room when I left it in the bar! The 2 point rating is for her, shame the rest of the place isn't as good.

Bearing in mind we only wanted two jacket potatoes, a sandwich and a plate of fish and chips we didn't think it could be that complicated. Three of the toppings for the jacket potatoes weren't available though we were not informed until half an hour after ordering and when I asked how much longer it would be I was told the chef was just plating up. After another 10 minutes we realised the time hadn't been spent on presentation! A large rasher of bacon with a giant dollop of mayonnaise on top is about as unappetising as it gets. The fish looked suspiciously like those cheap frozen rectangular fillets and came with a minute portion of skinny chips. Oh and the part baked french bread used for the sandwich was horrid. One to avoid!

I booked to stay at the Black Lion some time ago as I knew I was going to see my Aunt who lives in Ringmer in August 2014 over the bank holiday. When we arrived at the Black Lion car park on Thursday 21st August my first thoughts were this looked like a tip, rubbish in the skips were overflowing and a large tow trailer in the make up stages I guess by the owner ! This place was right on a roundabout with with large amounts of traffic noise together with a pain to get out of the car park onto the main road due to high volumes of traffic on the A22 ! We made our way into the Black Lion and got our key to the room and settled in, the room for our 3 night stay ! the room was very small for a double room which over looked the kitchen..The en-suite was very small, could not swing a cat in it ! however we went down to eat on our first night in the restaurant and food was very average my partner ordered fish and chips was served on a cold plate the fish was poor as well as the mushy peas were inedible as it seemed to have loads of sugar added to the peas, my chicken salad was OK however £6.50 for an ice cream too expensive total bill two courses was £42 way too expensive for two courses with a glass of wine !! I would not have minded if the food was quality and good portion sizes ! We then went off to bed, the first night was way too noisy people slamming doors at 11pm and talking very loud in the room next door as well as slamming doors and making unnecessary noise early AM without any respect for other guests in the hotel !!, felt like the a joining walls were made of paper !! The following night I was kept awake most of the night by a fridge defrosting itself from 3am to 6 am so the owner told me after I complained to him ! I thought it was the fan in the kitchen but he told me it was the fridge defrosting itself ! he said that defrosting it at 3am to 6am was the best time as guests would be asleep by this time !! well I certainly wasn't woke me up big style !! By this time I felt I had no sleep for two nights and felt drained !! The shower was quite poor and was not powerful enough for hotel standards ! The breakfast's we had were poor, no choice on a menu which you would expect ! all done verbally and no choice of healthy cereals or juice's etc.. just a full fry up breakfast...We also had to wait for our food at breakfast to appear after some considerable time which if you think about this should not have been the case as the menu was restricted !! I noticed the cook or chef if you like was a young lad which I feel needs to have some help along the way to get him up there to give quality food at a competitive pricing ! for me I am not sure he's up to it ! The whole experience was poor and the whole building while I appreciate its a listed building its in need of some serious TLC together with the outside area's need some attention so as you could sit outside to eat and drink in the summer months which in turn would to get this place up to a level to compete with other pubs and hotels in the area as well as the management need to be serious about wanting to make this business a success for the future, too laid back for my liking. We paid £64 pounds for Thursday night and £69 pounds for Fri and Sat nights total £202 inc breakfast.Would I go back on my next visit to see my Aunt the answer is No, whilst I was down there I have asked around and have now found two other places to review for my next visit which have been recommended to me !

Not good - dirty with no atmosphere as the pub was empty even on a weekend evening. The menu was comprehensive but we felt that it could have been just a microwave meal and certainly not freshly cooked.

Had lunch, very pleased we called in here, as one has a choice in Halland. Service was good, food was really hot and well presented, no complaints. Decided to have a desert, which being priced at £4.75 was below the usual charge. It was superb, far better than many costing a lot more. Staff young lady, looked after us well which all goes to make ones visit more pleasent. Will call in again when that way.

I went the other day with a group of work colleagues for our annual Christmas evening meal. Our table was booked for 7:00, we were seated at 7:30, we were bought our starters without too much of a wait. We had to ask the waitress if she could get the heating turned on as everyone was freezing cold, the manager appeared shortly and turned the radiators on. We then had to wait just under an hour for our main course! The menu stated Roast Turkey with stuffing, pigs in blankets, yorkshire pudding, roast or mash potato, veg & gravy. There was no stuffing, pigs in blankets, yorkshire pudding or mash potato, there wasn't even any sauces. When I queried this I was told that there had been a breakdown in communication with the chef and the manager (this is who I spoke with!) and that there would be nothing else but some more veg, 5-10 mins later when we had almost finished our meal all that was bought out was a few sprigs of broccolli. Too little too late I think!!!We then had another very long wait for our desserts, I asked at the bar when it got to 50 mins to be told yes it is coming and by pure coincidence it started to arrive. I thought the food tasted fine but was so dissappointed as it could have been so much better. The manager did say that he held his hands up and it was his mistake, but I really didn't think he was that sorry. We gave our menu choices a few weeks before we arrived so they knew what we were eating, we were the only ones in the restaurant, there were few people in the bar but I got the impression that he was much happier chatting to the locals in the bar. I would not reccommend!

It's right on the A22 but traffic noise didn't seem to be a problem. Quiet bar with well-kept Harvey's ales. Our room was compact but comfortable. We didn't dine there (because the reason for our visit was attending a social event nearby) but breakfast was a reasonable "full English".

W decided to have a Sunday night away and chose The Black Lion. On our way during the afternoon we broke down and did not arrive until after 7pm. Our host Nigel was very welcoming and showed us to a very pleeasant en suite rooom. We quickly changed and went down to the pub. to order our dinner. The home made steak and ale pie was recommended and could not be faulted, nor could the pancakes to follow. A good breakfast the following morning and we set about seeing if our car was mended....not until the next day. How do we get from Halland to Eastbourne we wonder..no worry says Nigel I will take you. What more can we say but this is a great find for a relaxing night away from it all. Well done Nigel et al

No complaints very good value for money for the portion size.. The lady behind the bar was polite and waited on us, the only bad thing about this pub.. People were waiting a long time for the food and asking when it was going to be.. If your in a rush and need to eat and be gone this is not the place for you.. We had starters so it didn't feel as bad but the others around us it took a long time... The restaurant looks lovely .. This pub is quirky and has loads of character ... We would deffently go back! We were staying at the nearby Crockstead Heath Farm Hotel and decided to enjoy a pub meal out our first evening and this was the closest. We ate in the pub, not the attached restaurant, which was empty. Coincidently, we had watched the Restaurant Inspector programme about this site earlier in the year. The service was very good and friendly and we were impressed with that, but the chips served with the main course tasted as though they had been cooked in oil that had passed it sell by date. In addition, we were the only customers in the bar and the television was on continuously. We would have preferred to enjoy our meal without this distraction. The deserts were enjoyable however. In summary, good location, good service, food could be improved.

Six of us ate here one evening and we all ordered different dishes from curry to seafood pie and we all agreed that it was the nicest meal we had had on our trip. There was a good selection of dishes and specials and the desserts were just as good. Nice place too but a charming atmosphere. Very reasonable on the pocket especially as we come from Ireland where we are seriously ripped off on price. We went on a Sunday night and it was fairly quiet which suited us as we were starving so didn't want to have to wait long. One of the tasties seafood pies I've ever eaten.

i have recently been for dinner with a few people, the staff where amazing, but seemed to be running around whilst the landlord sat playing on the computer, there was no interation from the landlord when a mix up had happened with our order he left it to one young girl to deal with which i must say she was a pleasure polite and curteous and a credit to the pub even though just moments before the landlord had been telling her she was useless, i have been previously to see the same young girl trying to cope with a full bar again whilst the landlord watched, the karaoke nights are a shamble going on until ridiculous times in the morning! I have recently started to see a increase in ants on the bar and the tables which is not very pleasent when trying to eat! I was also charged £3.90 for a packet of tobacco which was actually already priced at £3.50, not only that but a box of pringles priced at 42p were charged to me for £1.00, surely trading standards would possibly be interested in this!! I would strongly recommend giving this pub a wide birth!

When the next day, you’re still talking about how bad the service was, and watch every table you arrived before get served, eat, and leave. Literally lunch was over before we got served our lunch. Service was friendly on arrival, but that’s when it ended too. No one wanted the warm-ish food when it finally arrived. We didn’t leave a tip, and that’s super rare to annoy us that much.

It was quiet for our Xmas do though we may have been the first to have a big group event :) We had the festive menu. The carvery was lovely, however if veg is left on hotplate too long it can be bit hard - not sure if there's another solution to this. Some in the group were not overly enamoured with the Mac 'N' Cheese, felt it was not cheesy enough. The chips were overcooked which came wit the burger. Overall, it was a super evening, lovely venue and welcoming staff.

I’ve been to this place a few times now, when flying to and from Gatwick Airport. I’ve always been impressed by the staffs politeness and courtesy, going that extra mile. They are very dog friendly with treats at the bar, and water bowls provided. There has been a hansom, well behaved, and affectionate Australian kelpie dog there on a few of my visits. The rooms are reasonably priced have been consistently clean, tidy and comfortable during my stay. I would not hesitate to recommend The Plough Inn to any other traveller or patron.

Tried the Hay Waggon, which is under new ownership. Great barbecue with seafood kebabs and amazing local rump steak. Homemade ice creams are to die for. All served up in a wonderful garden
