This is a very quaint typical cosy, old fashioned pub. The atmosphere is buzzing. The food is excellent and the service is 5 stars. Highly recommended. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We visited twice in 2 days as we were visiting on our narrowboat once in the evening and once at lunchtime, both times the food and service and atmosphere were impeccable!!! We can highly recommend the braised beef, fish and chips and the posh fish finger sandwich!!! The desserts were fabulous too and so well priced!!

We visited the Black Lion last night with our relatives from the States. Three of us had pie & chips, one had jacket potato with tuna, we all said it was the best meal we'd had all holiday. Our relatives left us earlier today & my partner & I returned to the Black Lion again tonight. The welcome we've had both nights has been lovely. The owner, the staff & the locals have made us feel so welcome & we cant wait to come back again 😁

Great pub that we found many years ago and always call when we're in the area. Good lunch yesterday and beer brilliant. Staff great and you could have a laugh with them. (Can't stand stuck up bar staff who think they're important. Yours don't). Only minor complaint, which you can do nothing about, is the walk up the hill. Can you get council to install a stair lift.🥰🥰

Bravo the Black Lion. 2 Sunday lunches (one roast lamb, one roast beef), 2 drinks (one large red wine, one pint of bitter) plus 2 coffees - less than £20 each. With an efficient and friendly staff and equally friendly locals, never mind the building itself and its location, I'm made up. Can't praise you all enough. x x

Nice treat for lunch. Great little pub, friendly staff, nice decor, very clean. Good selection of cask ales and lagers. Food delicious, all homemade and good sized portions. Ordered from the specials board, steak and kidney pudding and venison burger, both very tasty, good portions and real chips. Nice fresh salad with the burger. Will definitely be going back. Parking a bit tight on the car park and narrow road leading up to it to be aware of. Great local find.

After the visit of Churnet valley railway, we wanted to have a lunch. We didnt book for a table on sunday roast and realised no proper table for 3 of us. We've been led to 1st floor with high chair and big projector screen for football. We ordered at the bar and foods came pretty quick and in a generous portion at this cost c.£12 for a portion of beef sunday roast was absolutely rare in this current era. The main point is that those foods were heartily made and so yummy. Plus ales and drinks we were well fed and absolutely glad we picked this pubs among a lot of them in the area.

We had a lovely catch up with friends on Saturday including lunch & a couple of bottles of wine - the pub is perfect for this as it’s relaxed & a great atmosphere. A negative review has been posted about a family being put with ‘very drunk people’ meaning us and i think that is really unfair. We might have been a little bit loud as we were celebrating & having fun but we would never have wanted to cause offence to anyone & if they had said anything we would have apologised immediately. We spoke to the family & the little boy. It is certainly not the pubs fault. We all have young children so would not intentionally swear in front of a child but we were adults in a pub having a good time & not in a restaurant. The staff are all really friendly & can’t do enough to make sure you’re looked after, the food is home cooked & all spot on - if only the family had spoke up it could have been nicer for all! We had a really lovely time.

If you are going to go, then I recommend booking a table, We did and it’s a good job else we wouldn’t have got in. Food was excellent and the staff were next level. Thanks again

Met an old friend for lunch. Our first visit to this pub. Apart from a bumpy car park surface on arrival, we entered a really characterful traditional British Pub with friendly, happy customers and a very warm greeting from the landlady. Cozy, warm, and comfortable table seating with excellent beers in prime condition and tasty food that was freshly prepared and skilfully served. The prices were very reasonable. The facilities were well-managed, very clean, and fully functional. We can only recommend this Pub that has so many merits ....... go there soon and enjoy them all !! It is a rare UK experience these days.... we will be back again for sure.

Had the Sunday roast and chose beef. Before this, the last time I had a roast dinner here was probably 5 years ago. Compared to previously the latest meal portion size was a LOT smaller. The plate was less crammed with various veggies but still just about adequate. I prefered the meal from 5 years ago. On this visit the beef was tender and a reasonable portion, the yorkie was beautifully cooked, of a large size and delicious and the gravy was flavoursome but I could've done with more of it! The disappointment was with the roast potatoes. The roasties didn't taste great, there were just two small pieces and they looked anemic and were not crispy. The other veggies were okay but I did not like the red cabbage which tasted strange like cinnamon. What is that doing on a roast dinner?? Drinks-wise I was disappointed with the draught lagers available here and the high prices! Where's the Stella or Aspalls draught cider?? As you can see I'm a bit of a food analysist and overall the meal just made the Good rating but was NOT Excellent. I would like to see MORE detailed glowing food reviews on this site before I return to this venue. In the meantime I'll keep going to Ipstones for my meat roast where the veggies are all you can eat and the meal costs about £9.50! Thank you

This is more of a thank-you than a review. Every now and then you stumble across a little gem and this is one of those times This isn't your plastic "gastro" type pub. This is your welcoming, friendly, cosy pub serving proper, hearty, homemade food and great ales. You won't be met with "I'm Gareth and I'll be your server today". You'll be met with a big smile and "hiya love, what can I get you?" You won't get asked for a swipe of your debit card and asked to leave a kidney behind the bar just to make sure you don't do a runner; no just good old fashioned trust. No pretentious plastic food here just fantastic, home cooked food...steak and ale pie with big, juicy chunks of steak in tasty beef gravy and a glazed shortcrust pastry. Proper chips that taste more like roast potatoes and great selection of veg. Cosy fires and leather armchairs aplenty And whilst at some pubs you have to remind them, "I only wanted to buy lunch not the bloody pub!" here the prices are all extremely reasonable indeed. Thank-you so much Black Lion for your friendly service, excellent food, and cosy atmospheric surroundings. You are seriously one of the best pubs we've ever been to. The one complaint we have is, we wish you were located closer to where we live! 😁 Thank-you, keep up the excellent, we will definitely return and will be recommending you!

This place has never failed to please us, from the setting , cosy interior and pleasant and friendly staff. We mostly go for Sunday Lunch regular and also a spot of lunch when we have walked the canal with our dog weekdays. It’s always spotless , and cosy warm. Although all the girls who wait on are so nice and always ask if everything is ok, I must give a massive mention about Roz, ( hope that’s her real name ) the cook , she is always popping out to mix with customers and always has a happy smiling face , she’s so good at her job, so for us Roz is part of the furniture who must not be removed ….Well Done Everyone, keep doing what your doing . Oh it’s also nice to be able to sit in a pub without idiots or bad language ( which is rare these days ) ….
