My wife and I with two of our friends visited the Black Jug for lunch on a mid-week day. There is a good selection of real ales which are (based on the small sample I took) well kept. The menu is varied and has both “pub classics” and more interesting items. Our food was well presented , beautifully cooked and of generous proportions; we all cleared our plates. The staff were attentive and friendly. I would recommend this pub and I will go again.

My beautiful wife found this gorgeous pub/restaurant on Google maps, read a couple of reviews out to me, and before she had read 3 reviews, I'd booked us in the following day, All I can say is wow, the pub is beautiful, the right amount of olde worlde, and modern charm, we were met with a smile, and a warm welcome, we ordered a drink and were shown to our table, the pub wasn't as busy as I expected for a Saturday, although it was busier in the rear garden. My wife ordered the crispy beef starter, and was very happy, perfect consistency, she then went for the goats cheese salad, and absolutely loved it I went for the bang bang chicken wings to start, and hand on heart, poss the best chicken wings I've ever had, the flavour was outstanding, For my main, I went for the steak, now I never have sauce with my steak, I prefer to taste the quality of the meat, but this steak had a peppercorn sauce in a jug, oh my god was it good, I got my wife to taste it on one of my chips to see if it was just me, but all that done was to cost me some of my chips and half of the sauce, she said its the best sauce she's ever had, which is high praise indeed. All in all, this was one of the best meals we've had this year, and I would personally put it in my top 5 meals ever, those wings and sauce would definitely be on my deathrow wish list 😋😋💜💜 We would highly recommend a visit to anyone in or around the area

Have a lovely evening with a delicious dinner with my partner after coming back from Gatwick airport by train, we decided to break the journey half way. We live in the Portsmouth area. We stopped at this beautiful, cozy and unique pub near Horsham train station and we were not surprised this venue was listed in the good beer guide. A great selection of ales, lager, ciders, wines, other beverages and a varied menu. The staff were welcoming, efficient and friendly. We would like to come back again. Keep up the good work. Best wishes.

A disappointing meal .bad service from front of house and kitchen. We were highly recommended by our hotel and locals which made the experience even more disappointing. We ordered two roast dinners with a side of caulifower cheese . Service was slow. Our food arrived and there were no roast potatoes. He returned again with the cauli side . Still no potatoes . We then ordered a side of roasts . The waiter saw we had no potatoes and took the additional order and went to the kitchen. This was not isolated occurence. A young couple at a neighbouring table were also served a roast , again no roast potatoes were on the plate or brought seperately. When the waiter next appeared ihe informed us having checked with the kitchen , that we could order roast potatoes and that they would take a further few minutes . At which time I asked for the menu . It clearly stated after the roast meat choices that roast potatoes seasonal.vegetables and gravy would be included . I pointed this put to the waiter who did not admit their mistake but scurried back to the chef. Before he scurried, I asked for the adjacent table to also have roast potatoes served as part of their roast dinner. I told him to cancel our additional side order of roast potatoes as it should have been present on plate and we required them not as additional side but to be included as printed on daily menu. He hadnt noticed or indeed checked their order and presented plate. So you can see why he scurried.. Finally the potatoes arrived with apology... from the chef , via the waiter, not in person. It was not busy at this time for food. The chef appeared and walked through the restaurant area twice but didnt apologise or interact with any staff or customers. He hadnt finished serving covers and it was not home time. The food was overrated in quality taste and quantity. I would not recommend roast lamb or roast beef. Both priced over 20 pounds for a course. When the bill was requested there was no courtesy chat if everything was okay with the meal, or an apology or a discount. At this time of paying i said I was very disappointed with the meal as we had been highly recommemded The couple duly received their roast potatoes but no apology or comment passed to them Poor food, poor team poor front of house and kitchen staff. I dont know how other recommendations managed to be anything but creative writing. Terrible. Do not go to this location for a Sunday Roast. Maybe risk a liquid lunch. But beware.

It’s one of the nicest pubs in Horsham, a little more expensive than most others but the perfect place for a pre-or-post theatre drink or meal. It’s perfectly situated being almost opposite ‘The Capitol’, the town’s main Arts Centre and is also close to the railway station and main town centre. Service is invariably swift and friendly and both the interior and exterior of this place is beautiful.

Shame on you The Black Jug! My partner and I sent a Christmas Day query on the 8th of August 2023 using the same email address we used to secure our booking last Christmas 2022. I started to chase this at the beginning of September as I was concerned that if you could not accommodate then I would still have time to book elsewhere. I was consistently told the lady who was dealing with it was not in and assured she was working through the booking emails. I called several times during September to be met with the same response. I called again at the beginning of October to be told the lady was looking this week and they would be in touch. I left my number and again nothing, I called again and was told they had not received my email, so forwarded it again and offered to go in to show them this email dated the 8th of August and was assured I did not need to do this as they would have my booking. I have called again this evening only to be told by Nathan they cannot accommodate as had not received the email, they are fully booked and I am 1st in line on a cancellation list! He then followed this up with "we are receiving cancellations all the time" to which I responded "then why have I not been booked in?" He unsurprisingly had no answer for this! Appalling customer service and despite reminding them we are only a party of 2, he said there was nothing they could do as they have taken all deposits for this and are fully booked!

We are here on a Saturday evening and found the stuff to be very friendly and helpful. We are not local to the area and was staying at a Premier Inn nearby as I use a mobility scooter we didn’t know how to access the pub, so my husband went in and a stuff member came out and showed us a way in and somewhere I could leave my scooter. The meal was lovely and the kitchen happy to serve me a child size meal, I also loved the half sized dessert and hot drink options great for smaller appetites or for diabetics who still want a little treat. The meal was good value and the pub still has a pub feel and vibe to it despite it looking very busy for food too. Would recommend it to anyone staying at the nearby Premier Inn as it was a much better meal and better value than the meal we ate in there the night before.

Group of us visited Saturday lunchtime. The service was very good, and our waitress was both very helpful and accommodating. I would say the food was of mixed quality, some of the dishes being really good, others need work. The gyozas starters were very good as were the hallumi fries and the hummas/pittas starters. The crispy beef salad main was good, though a little to much sweet chilli sauce for my other half making it bit too spicy, the Malaysian curry was also pretty good, as was the Traditional Ham egg and chips. But the Asparagus quiche pastry was badly over cooked making it a disappointing, as was the pastry on the bakewell tart, and the waffles in the desert were also overcooked being dry and cardboard like in texture. Whoever is pastry chef needs to pay more attention to their timings. The food was far from bad, but could have been so much better with a little more care. Food at this pub has always been reliable, just not quite so this time. Hopefully next time will be better…

This really is a lovely pub, the nicest in Horsham in my opinion with lovely staff and nice courtyard in the back. The issue now is that food portion sizes have shrunk so much but the prices increased. I understand that overheads have risen drastically but I feel that paying more for quite a bit less now has made dining here not really viable. £4:25 for literally a handful of chunky chips is too much.

So we had been to an evening event at TH Baker and wandered past The Black Jug on the way to the car park. It was 20:50 food service ends at 21:00 so we literally just made it. We had sausage and mash which was outstanding and a burger which was brilliant. The staff were very helpful and accommodating as we were late and the kitchen was about to close. A table was set in the conservatory and the food arrived promptly and it was hot as where the plates. We will defiantly be back but hopefully next time a little earlier in the evening.

Came here with colleagues from a charity shop I help in for our Christmas meal. Disappointing to say the least. Most of us had the tradition turkey meal. Turkey was of the boned and rolled type. Stuffing was a slice off a sausage shaped roll. But we all agreed that it was the roast potatoes that were the biggest let down. They were not at all golden and crispy, in fact rather pale and tough to cut, and very tasteless. They were all exactly the same pale yellow all over, not various shades of golden crispness like proper roasties should be . It occurred to me after that maybe they were deep fried, which might account for the very even pale yellow colour? Anyway, however they were cooked, they were voted by all of us, underwhelming and disappointing. Best bit for me were the sprouts, which were cooked to perfection for me ( still firm and bright green) but disliked by others who prefer sprouts over cooked ! ( or not at all ) I filled up with 3 portions ! Also, something on the table to make it a bit more Christmassy would have been nice, like maybe crackers. All in all not good value at nearly £25 for two courses.

Sunday lunch was good even with a prolonged wait, the ladies apologised and gave us a deal on the bill so we were not too fussed that we had a longer wait. Food was good and with the reduced price was good value. At full price I think it is a bit pricey for the quality, but it fitted the bill and we didn’t leave stuffed and slouchy so was positive meal. Few minor changes and all would be perfect and they seemed to have plenty of staff for the tables that were here so the service could have been bit more attentive. Overall was very pleasant and enjoyable meal. Thanks

Two of us stayed in Horsham for the night and wanted somewhere to eat that wasn't attached to a certain hotel chain. The Black Jug was a short walk away and had good reviews. Happily, we weren't disappointed. The menu is large and eclectic, so everyone should find something to eat. Went for the French onion soup (good flavour) and Prawns with sricha mayo (succulent prawns with a good spicy mayo) followed by Sea Bass and chicken and ham pie. Fish needed more 'greens' with it but shared some from the pie. The pie isn't one of those ghastly slab of puff pastry jobs, but a proper pastry pie. Almost too much on the plate with creamy mash and veg but was delicious. Didn't have dessert (too full!). Washed down with wine and a pint of 'Proper Job'. Lovely.Staff were welcoming and friendly and adapted happily as one of us needs gluten free options. So. If you want somewhere to eat in Horsham, this place should be on your list.

Away from home for a night with work - no where to go, Billy no mates! Not at the The Black Jug - lovely staff, lovely food, great selection of beer and wines - can't go wrong - highly recommend the sausage and mash with onion gravy. Wonderful! Reminded me of home!!! Well done to the team!!!

When I had a problem with some accidental allergies in my meal I was very impressed with how it was sorted. Although it was not their fault they were very apologetic and couldn’t have been more helpful. They were very concerned for me and went out of their way to make sure I was ok. Problems occur sometimes and it’s how it’s dealt with that is important. This is a good place to go if you have allergies as they are very helpful and concerned that they get it right.

Really nice menu, the food was lovely and the staff were friendly. The pub offers a cosy bar dining area as well as a pretty conservatory and colourful garden, including an undercover area. Dogs are welcome which is always a winner for us. Would definitely recommend.

Had a decent meal but on receiving the bill we had been charged for another round of drinks. No apologies were made. Left very disappointed that that can still be made with an automated system. Check your bills before paying!!!

Wonderful A fabulous combo of delightful service and food that miraculously retains a pub feel despite its gastronomic excellence And at a price that is eye m-wateringly competitive You’ll be spoilt for choice by the menu and wine list, the tables are large and well spaced and there seems to a constant stream of staff you haven’t seen before all of who are delightful. In the same sitting Just go and and enjoy

Dropped in for a light lunch in this comfortable pub whilst changing trains at nearby Horsham Station. I chose a steak sandwich from the tempting menu whilst friends went for the tasty liver paté option. The pub has a great selection of well kept ales (we identified it in The Good Beer Guide) and offers quality wines too. Covid precautions were well administered and service was friendly and swift.

So 26th Sept 2020 I took my wife out for only the second time since COVID hit us all. We decided on The Black Jug for drinks and a nice dinner out after a visit with a friend of mine for a few afternoon drinks on the Tuesday prior. The setting is lovely and ambient and for once everyone was obeying the "go to the loo then wear a mask' policy. We started with drinks, my wife having Prosecco and myself enjoying the delights of Harveys Best Bitter before ordering from a slightly trimmed menu but something for everyone. We started with the Prawn Cocktail each before my wife decided on a light bite and chose Quiche where I went more for the steak. The food was amazing and the desserts (Chocolate Brownie- the best ive had....seriously) along with the cheeseboard was spectacular. Even the Irish Coffee was spot on.BUT... this review earned its 5* rating of what happened after. I had left The Black Jug all of a matter of 1 or 2 minutes when I realised I had lost my rather expensive prescription glasses. The staff all helped me look for them but to no avail. Then at 8am this morning I returned to be greet3ed by a gentleman I assume who is the Landlord/Owner. He helped me relook and even stepped outside and helped me look. He then spotted on top of a postbox a pair of glasses which turned out to be mine.Thank you so much, I would of left and not even spotted them and lost a pair of glasses costing me £180.Amazing team and an amazing place. Its a must visit for any Horshamite or any one visiting...

One of Horsham's more interesting and unique pubs so I was looking forward to visiting after an absence of a few years. Made a reservation well in advance for what I felt would be a quiet midweek afternoon, and on arrival was precisely guided to a table directly opposite the toilets. Mrs EPR spent much of her time monitoring the hand sanitisation of numerous customers (about a 20% take-up) on the way in and out of the facilities, whilst gazing wistfully at all the empty tables in the nearby attractive conservatory. Menu was slightly more elevated than just normal pub fare but I had a nagging, and quite unqualified, feeling that some of the more adventurous dishes might disappoint. So, despite being a dedicated carnivore I deviated well off my normal path and tried the cod and chips. Quite impressed; the white flesh was well cooked and tasty and the batter was perfect. Chips were actually quite flavoursome too despite their scraggy appearance. Slices of bread and butter were an unexpected and welcome bonus, and the nice server was happy to bring us more tartare sauce when requested. After that, rather looked forward to a dessert so chose the chocolate and orange tart with a passion fruit sorbet. Actually got a bog-standard chocolate tart with raspberry ripple ice cream, which was rather disappointing. The draft beer selection here seemed less adventurous than I seem to remember but at least there was some Harvey's. Topically, efforts to combat Covid 19 were quite commendable; lots of diligent and enthusiastic cleaning of vacated tables and chairs, hand sanitisers clearly available, and a one way system to circumnavigate the pub and limit unnecessary contact (although most punters just took the quickest route regardless). So can't fault the effort.Staff very polite, friendly and willing - often not the case in the days of yore.Won't be rushing back in a hurry, but a perfectly serviceable meal on this occasion

We have been visiting the Black Jug for several years now after a cinema trip but had a meal yesterday evening and for two of us this was very disappointing. Both of us chose a steak burger absolutely disgusting burger what did you do to it thick stiff and tasteless. These are usually accompanied by delicious hand cut chips however no more just skinny probably pre frozen fries. trulydisappointing!1

Myself and my family have been to the black jug two or three times before and haven’t had too many issues. However, after visiting in August on one of the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ evenings, we had a pretty bad time.We arrived on time and they didn’t have a table for us even though we’d booked. We were sat outside for 25 minutes waiting, had ordered drinks but they didn’t come in that time. By the time we were shown to our table our drinks came, and we came to ordering... the food all four of us ordered was unavailable so we reordered... two of the four people then had to reorder a second time after the staff member came back to tell us the food wasn’t available. This was all because we weren’t seated for 20 minutes and would have probably got our food of choice if we’d been seated when we should have been. Not only did this happen but the food portions were extremely disappointing and also tiny. The fish cakes were tasteless and the burgers dry.All the waiting staff were very pleasant though, and after we said something to the waiter they took our drinks off the bill for us. I’ve never complained in a restaurant before but too many things happened on the night to let go.

I just wanted to share a review, I've been to the Black Jug a couple of times since lockdown was eased and I have to say their processes for safety are the best I've seen. There's a one way system in place and I saw myself door handles and toilets being cleaned on a regurlar basis, as well as all other surfaces being wiped down. I had dinner there on one of my visits and the food was great, I actually consider it to be improved since my visits prior to lockdown. Service was great, definitely better than before when frequently you'd wait at the bar for ages, I say keep the table service! All in all for those with worries about social distancing etc I'd recommend the Black Jug as they are doing the utmost to make it safe but still enjoyable.

The pub just a short walk from the train station caught our eye. Well presented both inside and out. One way system in and hand sanitizers at the front. Order at the table. Whilst table service was a little slow the nibbles and main courses were very nice. The menu was varied. We enjoyed our visit and would eat there again We found everything to be clean and tidy.

We booked a party of 16 for a 10 year works celebration. We were requested to make all menu choices in advance which we were happy to do, but with an ever changing menu this was problematic. After last minute enforced changes due to things being unavailable, we were left with people without starters after most had arrived and were only then told that further items were unavailable after challenging staff as why people were without left without food (ordered in advance starters). Staff absences and Covid 19 were quoted as the problem and one male member of staff told the person without the starter that it "was no big deal". It was actually. One bottle of wine was deducted as goodwill was was appreciated but the food was not warm when it arrived and can only be described as average. Staff must do better to keep their issues to themselves and not let it impact the customer's enjoyment as they did on this occasion.

This is an amazing friendly pub who did an amazing job catering for 20 people for a business lunch. We were served on time with hot delicious meals. Top quality food beautifully presented. Service was quick and friendly - attended to all our requests. Main meal followed by dessert and coffee. Great portions and I would recommend the coffee and mini dessert for a nice end to your meal. The meal was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Definitely recommend this friendly pub for lunch or dinner.

Went as group of four and ate in the bar area as we had the dog with us. As always the starters were really good and we shared three which was plenty for four. Hallumi chips, garlic prawns, bread and vinegar/oil, all excellent. I had the cod risotto which was good but I wasn’t so sure of the fish coating, might have been better plain. The atmosphere in this pub is excellent if frenetic. Staff are good but very busy so sometimes you have get attention.

Warm welcome and drinks served promptly which is always a good sign. Unfortunately there was no more roast pork which disappointed 3 of our group of six. When the food arrived it was tepid to cool - not good - and we did point this out to the waitress who came to collect the plates. A shame, because the food quality was good. The cheese plate to follow was great! They spontaneously took off the cost of one double cheese plate and a dessert following our comments about the food not being warm enough. We had a lovely time anyway, with wine being served without delay and the serving staff were very friendly and helpful.

Absolutely nothing to complain about but as all places are improving this one does not justify higher rating. There are more enjoyable establishments in the group they belong to. Overall all our food was pleasant enough for a town pub.
