We eat out all over and this has to be the worst food we have ever had.ordered a cesar salad and it had carrots and big tomatoes in with crispy chicken …then tried the lamb and mint pie and it was like looking and eating cat food even the mash was frozen mash or packet mash….beet disappointing but paid the £43 pound and got out of there

We reserved a table for 2 adults, a baby in a pram and a large dog for a Sunday roast and the space we were given was really appropriate, the staff were nice enough although unfortunately that is where the compliments end. We were given menus and the waitress took our drinks order but no other orders were taken, we eventually went to the bar to order however note the table next to us had their order taken no problem at the table. We ordered a lamb roast and a pork roast, I had a dietary requirement of being dairy free so was unable to eat the mashed potato or Yorkshire pudding but that was not a problem and I was offered extra vegetables which I accepted. They arrived hot and in good time, the potatoes and parsnips were poor, parsnips tasted deep fried, definitely not roasted and the ‘roast potatoes’ were more like chunky chips, the vegetables were some boiled carrot and brocolli, definitely no additional was served as offered. The meat was substandard and fairly dry. The gravy came already on the plate rather than separate in a jug. The meal looked very different to the ones on the reviews a few months ago, whether this is because the pub is being sold? We needed to change our baby however there was no baby change or disabled toilet and therefore my husband was required to go into the ladies bathroom as there was a changing table in one of the stalls and a handrail but definitely not enough space there for a wheelchair, hardly enough space to change the baby. Again, we asked for the bill and it came although we had to go to the bar to pay after waiting 20 minutes and no one coming to take payments. Very odd pub which is a shame as it has a beautiful garden and the potential to be a lovely stop near Foxton Locks. Unfortunately we would not recommend and would not return should we be in the area.

Came for Sunday lunch , never been before. No starters were offered, had the turkey dinner. Turkey quite dry , gravy came served on plates not separate, no cranberry sauce had to ask, limited veg, no stuffing sadly! Crockery was chipped. Desserts were over £5 (think £5.95) limited choice but decided on choc cookie sundae - so came in a normal pudding bowl - 3 scoops of ice cream , vanilla, choc and strawberry, drizzled with choc and strawberry sauce , then a few stale broken up cookies and odd bit of shortbread thrown in for good measure - not even any cream, it looked shocking! Overall very disappointing.

We decided on a rare date nite, arrived and staff were friendly and efficient, sat down and ordered two mixed grills. Steak, sausage, gammon, black pudding and chicken. When the meal arrives, one mixed grill and one steak. When we said that we ordered two mixed grills, the waitress took it back, then came back saying that it was her fault as she had put it through as a mixed grill and a steak, so we said that we'll take it as it is then. Anyway, the steak was unedible, so tough a gristly. The mixed grill didn't have black pudding, when we mentioned this to the waitress she said, well you've got a pork chop instead. At the end of the meal we said that the steak was so tough that we couldn't eat it to which she said "yes it's like that, some weeks it's alright and others it's not" Dreadful.

Fabulous welcome and service. We had been for a walk and went in for just a coffee. We were welcomed warmly into a nice bar area with lovely fire, so, decided to have some lunch. So glad we did. The pie and scampi we had were great. It was nice to have the option of a smaller portion for the scampi but you still get plenty. Extremely good value for money with lovely people looking after you. Has a tea rooms and bakery alongside and a lovely restaurant area which we will be going back to try.

Went today for Sunday lunch after having lovely meals in the past. The beef was as tough as old boots and the dinners came covered in gravy, which should really be kept separate as not everyone likes gravy. I am going to hazard a guess that the young chap who served us was new as his customer service skills need some work and we had to ask for menus. Bar staff as usual were lovely. We will not rush back for food.

This was an appalling experience and, sadly, unimproved since the last time we ventured here five months ago. The words that describe Sunday’s experience are: disorganised front of house with zero leadership, poor attitudes, poor ordering system, poor communication with the kitchen , unfriendly staff, uncomfortable seating, poor food. The pub has seen better days, and like the attitude is tired and sad. It's a great location and should have a strong welcoming presence and staff who actually care about what they're doing. Instead, the service was surly, random, unthinking and unprofessional - tables were full of dirty plates and used glasses sat there whilst staff chatted and grumbled - occasionally and audibly about the customers! We are local to Foxton and have been back in the UK for 12 months. We have been comparing many local pubs for food, service and comfort and this one gets a five out of ten. Publicans can't afford to let standards drop as prices rise. If you maintain exceptional service (food and welcome) - happy to show you what that looks like - you can claw back some if not all of the cost increases you're incurring as a destination of choice. So disappointed that we brought visitors, new to the area, to experience that which we received: a second class service and frankly, second rate food. You need to do better, much better.

My wife and I do not usually bother with completing feedback or reviews of products or places but as regulars now to the Black Horse for occasional lunches - about 15 miles from our home - it is so good as a village pub and in our experience just as a pub should be. The beer is just perfect but it is complimented by the most generous cheese and onion baguette which they so obligingly make on request. Its no small trip but so worth it and served with a very warm smile. We have eaten full meals there too which again in our experience are faultless. The perfect pub!!

So I've just hady second visit to the black horse as I was very happy with the food and service the first time and tonight didn't disappoint. Thursday's is pie & grill night. The first time we both had a mixed grill, plentiful portion size, proper home cut and cooked chip's and a lovely warm welcome from the staff and locals. Two weeks later, tonight, we had another mixed grill and then a minted lamb pie & mash. Mixed grill was again great. The pie had lovely homemade pastry, full of big chunks of meat and plenty of mash and gravy. It's very dog friendly in the bar area and we have had a snuggle both visits which were more than happy with and will return with our own dogs in the near future. In a nutshell, it's great value, good home cooked hearty dinners that we all want after a busy day at work served with staff that actually want you there which makes it very welcoming.

We found this pub in village when walking from the famous Foxton locks. What a find, great friendly staff, pub grub served hot, tasty and nice options. First time just two of us in evening, large fluffy tasty minced filled Yorkshire pub, obviously homemade mince. Also faggots and chips, again, hot tasty and delicious , veg perfect, chips. Second visit week later for lunch with friends. As we were eating about in the evening all had sourdough panini, again fresh, warm and tasty.

Small menu but being Sunday selected the Roast. Choice of 3 meats lamb, beef or turkey. .Wife and I went for lamb our daughter choose beef. Not a carvery so expected to waited a little longer. When our meals finally arrived (1/2 hr) the beef was fine. The lamb however consisted of 2 slices of 90% of fat &gristle, the veg undercooked, mash lumpy, roast pots tired, yorkshire soggy. No apology offered.

This time we had the grill & pie night menu, once again it didn't disappoint. Can definitely recommend & the size of a fish goujon is the size of a fish. You can certainly tell the food is cooked to order. The lady with cherry red Dr Marten was so attentive & really funny, she was spot on with our children. We may go again tomorrow.

Met with some friends I had not seen since before the pandemic. The pub is in a lovely setting and the staff were friendly, but my meal was poor. I ordered pie and mash (at £14.45). The mash was tasteless and lumpy and the pie crust was rock-hard: peas and gravy were OK. I mentioned this to the young man who collected our plates and he said he'd tell 'chef'. There was no feedback on the mash and pie crust, nor apparently was the manager told as there was no offer of discount - I didn't make a fuss as I didn't want to spoil what was a special occasion. But I probably won't be eating there again.

It was broccoli and Stilton soup to start, served with warm bread, the soup was delicious, you could smell the Stilton as soon as it was put on the table. Mains was a choice of cheese omelette, scampi and chips or chicken and mushroom pie.

Visited The Black Horse today with 10 other ladies for lunch. The food and service was very good indeed. Excellent value for money £7.95 for 2 courses. Food was freshly made and served piping hot - we couldn't ask for any more.

I’ve had bad options for vege roast , but this was the worst ! Roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding does not represent a “ veggie roast “ I expected some kind of meat alternative !! But apparently a veggie roast means a ‘ roast without meat !! ‘ As I was told by the manager, as she pointing to the menu ‘ Veggie roast ‘ without any kind of apology. As this was only a pound cheaper than the meat version ! I thought £8 :95 was a little excessive for a couple of roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding !!!

As a villager I can say that it’s great to have Claire and Dan running the pub. The food and service is great and the music nights are great fun! Having seen some of the negative reviews in the past it’s so good to see my local going from strength to strength.

We had a warm welcome as we arrived in the pub and the staff were lovely throughout the meal. The food was excellent as well. The fact that puddings were only an additional £1 on top of a main was amazing value. Dog friendly as well!

First visit to The Black Horse in more than two years and am happy to report we thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. The conservatory has stunning views over Foxton/Langton Fields (make the most of it before the housing estates arrive). Service was efficient while more importantly the food was absolutely top notch Sunday dinner. I went for Salmon with Hollandaise sauce, new potatoes and veg. My wife had Roast Beef…the Yorkshires were big enough to use as a sleeping bag. The kids both had beef burgers and am pleased to say the chef made them especially, even though they were not on the menu. I understand The Black Horse is under new ownership, whomever it is, they are doing a good job. We’ll be back.

Recently redecorated, attractive interiors. There's always a warm welcome and the food's good pub grub. Have eaten here several times, in small and large groups and service is always with a smile and food is hot and well presented. Can't believe the value for money - we are so lucky have to The Black Horse in Foxton!

Very nice place, the meal would of been 100% but the vegetable’s needed to be cooked a bit longer and in a bigger dish. Beef was lovely and tender, could of done with a gravy boat.

We dropped in to the Black Horse tonight to sample the fayre being offered by the new management; it was a delight.... Fab warm welcome and a very friendly feel to the pub. We felt very welcome from the minute we walked through the door. It was Pie NIght and we sampled the Lamb and Mint “Home made” pie... A previous reviewer said the Pie is “Historic” and I absolutely agree; full of homemade flavour and full of great quality ingredients... We will be going back very soon and that’s for sure... Good Luck to Daniel and Claire, a lovely couple and I am sure they will do very well at the Black Horse..

Called in today for our first visit. Received a warm welcome from staff members and were able to be seated as although it was busy lots of people had chosen to sit outdoors. Chose a carvery and we weren't disappointed, choice of 3 meats all cooked beautifully, nice choice of fresh vegetables. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and you weren't bombarded by staff as soon as you started eating asking if it was alright. We were approached but had at least had a chance to have eaten some of the meal! Will definitely be returning here again.

Whether for a tasty breakfast or lunch would highly recommend. We were pre-warned there might be a short wait for breakfast, but they sat us down had our order and served very quickly. Polite and courteous staff, and the food was excellent. Full cooked breakfast was nicely filling good quality meat products, well presented and the beans were clearly not your average heinz, they were butter beans in a slightly herby tomato sauce clearly made on sight and added something special to an already excellent breakfast. Wife had the buttermilk pancakes and we both had fresh coffee and fresh crossaint available when we came in, cannot fault the cleanliness and I can only gripe that the car park is small, but you have space to park on the high street if it is full. We went for an anniversary breakfast as I drive past sometimes and was curious. Will definitely be going back with family possibly for Sunday lunch.

Have not visited for a couple of years but we were quite near so decide to give it a try. Well we will not be back, empty only two staff on (they were good). It is a shame because it used to be a nice place, but it looks like another one bites the dust.
